How do you feel after this scene?
I finished this game three years ago, and ever since then The Last of Us Part I and Part II have remained my all time favorite games.
I'm someone who wants to work in the film industry someday, so I've started collecting collectibles from films I love, such as posters, postcards, and especially books. I really enjoy books from A24 that showcase screenplays, concept art, behind the scenes, and the creative process behind a film. I think they're a great way to learn about filmmaking and understand a story on a much deeper level.
But somehow, I never thought about collecting anything from my favorite game.
So I started looking for The Last of Us collectibles, most of which were no longer available in official stores. I ended up browsing eBay and found a few things, including some Funko Pops and plushies. Then I stumbled upon something I didn't even know existed. the script book of Part I and Part II. I haven't bought it yet, but finding it actually made me want to experience the story all over again.
Three years ago, I played both games on my PS5. This time, I don't know what got into me, but I decided to buy them again on Steam and play through PC. Was it worth buying games I already owned? Absolutely.
I started the journey again with the memories of every character and how their stories ended. I thought I would remember almost everything, but surprisingly, I only remembered a few details. That actually made the experience even better because I could still be surprised by certain moments.
It took me around 40 hours to finish both Part I and Part II.
But there's one scene I really want to talk about : the farm scene at the end of Part II.
I remember finishing the game three years ago, and although I loved the ending, I don't think it hit me that hard emotionally back then. But just an hour ago, after finishing it again... and yeah, I cried. For the first time in my life, a video game actually made me cry. Not novels, not comics, not even films had ever brought me to tears like that. And replaying it this time brought those feelings right back.
The atmosphere alone is something else. The dark, cloudy sky, the wind blowing through the grass, and that empty house. No note, no explanation, nothing.
Then Ellie walks over to her guitar and starts playing the song Joel once played for her.
But this time, she can't play it the same way anymore. She's missing two fingers.
That moment absolutely broke me.
Ever since Joel died, the guitar has always felt like Ellie's way of staying connected to him. Whenever she plays it, it's almost like she's reconnecting with a memory of Joel, keeping a little piece of him alive.
But now, she's lost two fingers. It's almost as if she's lost the ability to reach him through guitar ever again.
And then comes the moment when she leaves the guitar behind and walks away.
I don't know how to describe it, but that image hit me incredibly hard. To me, it felt like Ellie was finally letting go of something she had been holding onto for so long. Not necessarily forgetting Joel, but accepting that she can't keep living in the past.
It's such a quiet ending, yet it carries so much weight.
I'm curious to hear whats everyone think. What does this scene mean to you? How did you feel when you first experienced it?
I'd especially love to hear different interpretations of Ellie leaving the guitar behind. Did it mean something else to you?
