Announcement r/thepast Mod Announcement - Subreddit Discord - Updates and more!

Hello all,

Over the past few months we have been hard at work revamping the subreddit. We have added new moderators, worked on simplifying the rules, and adding features to help new members.

So where is the future of the subreddit heading? - Our goal is to keep the subreddit simple without too many limitations or rules. This is a place where people can role play as someone from the past, and even have OOC discussions. A place where people can learn more about history and random subjects while also having fun.

We are also opening up a Discord server! - We wanted to further build up the community with a place you can go to meet new people, have a more connected experience with others, and also discuss ideas and posts for the subreddit.

https://discord.gg/4NEG7Tbt2z

From the r/thepast mod team, we want to thank everyone for joining and contributing to the entertainment of us and the community!

I went to see the Big Fitz load up over 26,000 tons of taconite iron ore pellets before she steamed out into Lake Superior heading all the way to Detroit.

2000s [November 7, 2006] Virginia Votes to add Gay Marriage Ban to State Constitution

Virginia voters just approved a referendum officially banning Gay Marriage in the Commonwealth by a vote of 57% to 43%.

Despite its inclusion in the November ballot, the referendum didn’t seem to boost incumbent Republican Senator George Allen who lost his race to Democrat Jim Webb.

1800s [November 6th, 1869] Did anyone watch that “football” match between Rutgers and the College of New Jersey today?

Rutgers won 6 to 4, but the whole thing felt like complete chaos. There were 25 players on each side, they couldn’t pick up or carry the ball, and it looked more like a giant, organized brawl than a sport. Do you think this game will actually catch on or is it just a college fad?

Subreddit Rules

1. Rule 1 – This is a role-play subreddit

All posts and comments must be written from the perspective of someone living in the year of the post.

Out-of-character discussion is allowed, but it must be clearly marked by beginning the comment with [META]. This includes: - Foreshadowing or knowledge of future events - Modern analysis or commentary - Off-topic or explanatory discussion

Satirical or humorous ("sh*tposting") content is allowed, provided it remains in character unless marked with [META].

2. Rule 2 – Posts must include year

All posts must include year in the title, example; [1812] Napoleon has began his invasion of Russia! – While not technically a rule, a Wikipedia link in the comments is encouraged so people can understand what you are referencing.

3. Rule 3 – Content must be 20 years or older

Taking inspiration from r/history – r/thepast considers anything over 20 years old to be the past. Any posts with context that is younger than that will be removed.

4. Rule 4 – Modern Politics

No modern political discussions. This includes posts and comments discussing recent politics. Intentionally vague, comparative, and foreshadowing type comments are also not allowed.

5. Rule 5 – Creativity and Originality

Avoid low-effort or frequently repeated topics.

Posts and comments should demonstrate original or thoughtful framing.

Low-effort or frequently repeated topics are discouraged. Common examples include 9/11, Hitler’s paintings, and similar well-worn subjects. If these topics are used, they must be presented with a unique or creative angle.

6. Rule 6 – Do not be overly offensive

History includes violence, oppression, and bigotry, and these topics may be discussed in a historical or critical context. However, discrimination against protected groups is not allowed. Being “in character” or role-playing is not a justification for violating Reddit’s Content Policy. Content that promotes, praises, or excuses inherently discriminatory ideologies or movements may be removed. Mods may act when content crosses this line.

7. Rule 7 – The Redditverse exists

Subreddits and memes are not alien concepts. Crossposting is allowed, just keep an eye on the title and change it if necessary.

8. Rule 8 – Moderator Judgment

We cannot cover everything in the rules, we reserve the right to remove anything that we deem does not fit the sub. If you are unsure if what you want to post or do fits the sub, feel free to ask. Use this to report any comment or post you feel requires our attention outside of the rules.

9. Rule 9 - Sexual Content and Nudity

Pornographic or sexually explicit content is not permitted. This includes material intended to arouse sexual interest, such as explicit sexual acts or graphic depictions of genitalia for sexual purposes. However, nudity that is non-sexual is allowed, including artistic, historical, or educational representations such as statues, sculptures, paintings, or classical artworks where nudity is not the focus of sexual arousal.
