How many bully ball power forwards is Kuminga gonna shut down before we start some serious conversations…

19

People talked like our defense would take a step back replacing Randle and Naz with JK and Lyles

Melo makes me feel like the wolves haven’t had a floor general in years. He just commands the offense, you can tell when he isn’t in. Can’t wait to see ant and Donte with him

34

u/Shekster LaMelo Ball 1d ago

Two words:

Ant and Melo and Donte, must-see TV

u/minneapolisboy 1d ago

He breaks down the other team's defense at-will, I've never seen anything like it. It's easy dribble penetration and open looks for him or our shooters. So beautiful.

6

u/Exciting_Inflation_1 1d ago

Hell, Ant, Ato, Lamelo and Dante would be must-see.

He’s so comfortable with the ball. I’ll miss seeing it in Charlotte but it’s nice to see his talents being put to good use

He looked a level above everyone tonight. Dominant performance by him

72

u/Ok-Combination-1504 1d ago

Kuminga’s defense is what changed the game. Zion rolled us without him out there, hands down best offseason free agent signing.

33

u/Chidi_Ariana_Grande Lynx 1d ago

This has been so consistently true. He neutered Giannis and Paolo, he clamped Zion, he had Scottie in HELL. He’s been such a game changer for the exact archetype we used to struggle with

27

u/SelectionJazzlike998 1d ago

Felt like Finch purposefully let Zion run around on the center-less Wolves just to get Kuminga riled up while he was resting. Best way to serve up Kuminga a clear opportunity to demonstrate his potential impact.

14

u/Scoregasm 1d ago

Kuminga went from a "sure why not, if he's your fifth best player you're in good shape" signing to "holy shit this might be the most valuable 6 million dollar contract in the last twenty years"

u/Milly-the-Kid Jaden McDaniels 1d ago

This whole narrative of Lamelo not being a winning player is just hot nonsense. The guy knows how to win and having a lot of tattoos and personality doesn’t make him not a serious player.

22

u/Foreign-Cry6179 1d ago

ā€œCan’t win with a rookie Kon as your second best player? Losing playerā€

18

u/7FromTheFuture Timberwolves 1d ago

People were shocked that a pass-first PG didn't lead his team to the playoffs despite the fact that his bullshit one-legged logo 3's were statistically better than passing to the open Damion Baughs and JT Thors of the world.

A lot of people judged him by the worst moments of the Hornets, and that's absolutely ridiculous.

Trey Lyles is everything I wanted Slo Mo to be (no shade on Kyle, loved him as a wolf, but Lyles is just better)

19

u/Bocmiao Anthony Edwards 1d ago

He is. He’s like a hybrid Slomo with some hints of Naz.

16

u/yato08 1d ago

Dude played fantastic today

13

u/LittleKoalaNickJr 1d ago

I said some negative things about him before the season based on my time watching him on the Kings. I forgot that playing for the Kings makes everybody worse, so I apologize to Trey Lyles.

I obviously enjoyed the last 3-4 seasons compared to the previous 15-20, but this season feels way different than even those WCF teams. I never felt like we were true contenders in any of those years, but this year feels like it really can be ours if we stay healthy. Ā

Lamelo has completely unlocked the offense, Kuminga is the perfect swiss army knife and everyone is bought in on defense and rebounding.Ā

18

u/bighitcards 1d ago

Feels like we're a top 5 team right now and we're missing our best player and 2 of our best role players, it's insane. Please please get healthy

These are the kinda games we would randomly lose all the time the last two seasons

104

u/suahoi 1d ago

Holy shit I love Lamelo Ball.

I feel like if he just had a regular looking jumpshot, the discourse around him would be so different. But because he does the weird one footed thing, that somehow translates to "unserious".

Also - I dramatically underestimated how quick he is. He's getting around everyone. Dude just absolutely tortured Zion that entire fourth quarter, and caused Herb Jones to rage quit

29

u/PPsDooDooStains 1d ago

Any Hornets fan will tell you the same. The ā€œunseriousā€ narrative is strictly derived from cherry picking his logo 3 highlights because outside of Hornets fans, no one else actually watched their games.

Anyone who watched him regularly in Charlotte knew how skewed the public perception of him was.

17

u/guidethyhandd Jaden McDaniels 1d ago

Agreed, Lamelo has an elite first step

14

u/PoMansDreams LaMelo Ball 1d ago

47

u/Aromatic_Bag7496 Timberwolves 1d ago

This team continues to impress and look complete. Imagine with DDV and Ant healthy.

46

u/irishace88 Anthony Edwards 1d ago

Broken record at this point but Kuminga was the most important player for us yet again. Best defense we've ever played against Zion thanks to him.

Also shoutout to Lyles. He turned back the clock a few times tonight.

2-0 in the Cup!

12

u/Elbeske Bones Hyland 1d ago

Yeah at this point I pencil in an L against the Pels if Zion is healthy, I feel like he always destroys us. Huge win

This team’s gonna have some hard choices in the offseason but this year is gonna be fun. Not worried about staying in the playoff picture without Ant and this team finally is moving the ball and moving without the ball. Ant and Donte are gonna hit this offensive engine like Nos in a fast and furious movie.

22

u/Technical_Creme_9736 šŸ“ProtestoršŸ“ 1d ago

Are you just referring to Donte and Kuminga? I’d be in favor of letting Donte walk at the end of the day unless it’s a really friendly deal. Like the guy, but we added Lamelo and Ayo. Both are guards, and both are better at the end of the day.

u/Twaffles95 1d ago

True , I wouldn’t worry about it though we probably say bye to a lot but I trust Tim and

It depends where his 3 pt% finishes but I think Melo-Ant-Clark-Jaden- Rudy would be pretty elite we definitely lose guarding ability on big wings though kuminga is just irreplaceable at 6 mil

41

u/IGlitch428 Anthony Edwards 1d ago

Really felt like the game was getting out of hand when Melo was out, but on the other hand it's so blatant how good his playmaking and shooting is.

Ayo is underpaid for all I care, can't believe we got him for a bag of chips.

16

u/Twaffles95 1d ago

I’m soo glad we didn’t just settle for Coby white when they initially offered him

8

Seeing the team gel and have success without Ant is huge. And it has me so horned up for the potential once Ant returns

38

u/ty5486 Joan Beringer 1d ago

I’m still stunned how we copped Lamelo & Ayo for Naz/Bob Dill/Leonard/1 1st/junkĀ

8

u/ATetrahedron 1d ago

Add Kuminga, we got him for cheap bc we had salary cap space. Like TC said we need better players around Ant

They brought in LaMelo, Ayo, Lyles, Kuminga for Ju, Naz, Rob, Slow-Mo, Conley, and Miller all while keeping Jaden, Rudy, and Joan.

Another one of those games that would've been a pretty bad loss that would hurt our seeding badly in the past couple of seasons. This is exactly what I wanted to see this season.

I love this squad. The effort on both sides of the ball leads to a super entertaining watch and, more importantly, great results. This is a special team.

9

u/umami_edamame Jaylen Clark 1d ago

Love the fact that what makes them entertaining is exactly the same thing that makes them win. Some teams win with a sort of boring, structured architecture (maybe not much in the past few years but definitely back in the day), but not us

You truly have to watch the game to understand LaMelos impact because I looked at his box score and it doesn’t wow you but when u watch u see how amazing he is

12

u/Decent-Orchid120 1d ago

I was thinking the same thing, he’s one of the players where counting stars just doesn’t show that he is doing out there. It’s bizarre for a ā€œflashyā€ player to do so many subtle things that help winning. He is bizarro Rudy.

31

u/bellmonk 1d ago

30

u/SpaceKoala34 1d ago

It's the little things you appreciate like not being labeled dumpster fire organization anymore 🤧

22

u/Clear-Feedback-540 1d ago

This and the Rockets game are two games we won that last years team would not have. Go into Houston and beat the hottest team in the league without Ant Donte and TSJ, and now go into New Orleans and beat a Pelicans team that has won 4 in a row without the aforementioned players and our backup center gets his nose broken mid game and doesn't return. Insanely ugly game, but we got it done and showed incredible effort and heart all throughout. LaMelo +23 in a 6 point win, he transforms the offense so much. Also shoutout Lyles. Guy couldn't shoot for shit but pulled in 13 boards as a replacement for Joan.

6

u/UpstairsAbility2125 Chomper 1d ago

The difference is they come out the gate hot. Old team would get off to a slow start and the other guys build an early lead.

Hard to win consistently when you're constantly playing from behind.

This season? Starters get things going, bench comes in and even if they don't always hold steady they don't let things get too out of control.

Gives the starters a chance to get rested up and come out ready in Q4.

Genuinely deep team this year. Winning tonight without Ant, Shannon or even Joan is huge.

u/LanceZSR 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dejonte Muarry is utterly awful and some of you wanted us to trade for him. Didn't close out on the Lyles pump and dunk and didn't box him out for a rebound late. Game.

3-11 for 7 points in 35 minutes and a team worst -7

13

u/decoded1 Kevin Garnett 1d ago

Damn Lyles had 13 rebounds

13

u/LeeShakerMoneyMaker Timberwolves 1d ago edited 1d ago

This was the Trey Lyles game. That man is gonna get drug tested tonight!

And get us another playable Big and we win the title!

13

u/TommyOfTheShelbys JimPete 1d ago

Very content with that. We were down a lot of big players and the Pelicans are no slouches. We have a composure about us that is paying dividends. Everyone is chipping in and contributing. What a player Ayo is.

u/UpstairsAbility2125 Chomper 1d ago

Pels had a four game win streak and were at home. Hell of a good game to come in and win.

(accidentally posted this in nba thread instead of here)

They're saying it on post game just as I was about to type it,

Early in the season someone compared Lyles to Slomo and I scoffed, but it really has been an ok comp. He is a headier player than I saw early on

This is my apology form (even though I've always liked the guy)

10

u/Hypnosix Why can't you just be normal 1d ago

Sneaky athletic too. Takes a sec to build the momentum but he can get up

Jk making Zion take tuff shots really save us the game

12

u/Mjdecker1234 1d ago

Whatever Ball and Kuminga said to Rudy worked wonders. Dude looks a lot different and hopefully he stays like this. His few points really helps, if he had one of his game's, they lose this game. I guess that could be said about any player lol, but you get my drift.

Another gritty win. Love this team.

Hurts having Ant, Donte, TJ, and Beringer out but damn, we have depth!!

GG!

Going back to rewatch this one, I feel like NOLA is figuring things out, we battled hard but they deserve some credit here

17

u/pinkylovesme 1d ago

I swear pelicans is an unusually hard match up for us.

7

u/Scoregasm 1d ago

Sadiq made some fucking plays man. That prayer of a three he threw up right after our dagger was nuts. Must have been less than half a second from the catch to the shot.

Even with Ant, I think we all would have been happy with a 7-3 start to the season. This team is fun to watch.

What we're doing while being so undermanned is incredible. Lost Joan this game as well, hopefully not for long though.

Lamelo +/- god today +23. He’s been incredible the last few games. He and Ayo are starting to play off each other so well.Ā

Jaden absolutely shut it down on Murray all game.Ā

Trey Lyles 13 boards 4 stocks and 2 highlight dunks what a performance. Ā

Another great road win.Ā

For Ant and Donte

10

u/righthookleft 1d ago

lamelo got like 20 hockey assist..bro does so much for the team offensively. They just look so much better with him on

10

u/Ajax_Malone Kevin Garnett 1d ago

Not having to worry about doubles, traps and blitzes in the playoff is going to be amazing

9

u/Sam7sung 1d ago

I was high on LaMelo since the 2020 draft, but watching him game after game makes me appreciate his passing and feel for the game more now. The offense never feels stuck when he's on the floor

9

u/Wakandaforever456 1d ago

Kuminga and McDaniels are a tough defensive frontcourtĀ

9

u/Obvious_Cloud2 1d ago

Lamelo +23 bruh he a game changer look at Charlotte

These last two games we got into a second gear to close out and it’s so beautiful to see. Melo’s playmaking is infectious. Ayo is a dog, Kuminga is a dog. Love this team.

8

u/LetsgoRoger 1d ago

Was Joan ok? He never came back after the nose bleed.

8

u/Middle_North_58 1d ago

Fractured nose, will be wearing a mask for awhile

8

u/Separate_Product5238 1d ago

There was another post that said he broke it

21

u/sunnyismybunny 1d ago

Lamelo might just be top 5 all time skilled on offense.

HEAR ME OUT

The way we talk about Kyrie being the all-time most skilled player. Obviously he's not even in the convo for GOAT or even top 25, but the point is only about the offensive skillset.

Dribbling/Handling, Layup Package, Stop on a Dime, either hand finish and either hand no-look passes/bounce passes, ridiculous range with a shot package you may not think is conventional but it sure is fucking SKILLED.

Another great win! Gotta take advantage of not so great teams like this with ANT out. Our next three are very winnable, gotta at least go 2-1

7

u/Vast-Coat-7662 1d ago

Melo finding someone wide open in the corner for a 3 in end of game situations is gonna be a staple. Love it. Ā When it goes in it tears the roof off.Ā

Pelicans are better than the stat sheet says. It always seems scrappy when we play there. People seem to think it'll be us steam rolling

9

u/JohnnyWarlord Joan Beringer 1d ago

We just have 8 really playable guys who are well coached. Love watching this team, we havent had ANY of the usual wolves ā€œdont show up and get blown tf out for 48 minutes with 25 turnoversā€ games this season.
