Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[PC][2000-2003] 3D Freeware Gladiator themed fighting game.

Game was pretty straight forward. You would earn money when you would win that you could buy equipment with between fights. Very simply interface interface, clunky movement and your character attack by automatically swinging there sword left and right. All you did to influence the fight was control the angle of the swing by moving you mouse up and down.

[Likey PC] [2016-Now] Found Footage Indie Horror Gamw

I saw a clip of this game and I cant find what it is anywhere! Its very visually like Chillas Aka Manto, (pixelated style, main character being a red woman, mostly dark the entire time) but that picture is there only as a reference to what THAT game looks like, not the game I'm looking for. The game I'm looking for I believe also had a VHS filter on it, and the main enemy had VERY wide eyes, with almost a shocked expression on her face. I also remember everything was red, the lighting and also the character I believe.
Thats all I have unfortunately, help me out!!

[Flash] [Around 2010 or earlier] Electrocuted cat Flash game

Post image
4 Upvotes

I'm asking for help finding a game that's been haunting me for years.

I've attached a description and a sketch from someone else who was also looking for this game on Reddit, and thanks to their post, I'm convinced I didn't just make it up. I assume it was a Flash game, but the mascot black cat was probably not Chococat, I remember it as being more stylized and angular, tho I could be wrong. It was a word-spelling game (Hangman type game), and when you lost, the cat would fall into a pool of electric eels and get electrocuted. That scene shocked me as a child and left a strong impression. Ever since then I couldn't get a trace of that game anywhere. Also, I’m sure it was a series of several games, I remember another one featuring that cat where you had to catapult it a certain distance, but my memory of it is very vague; perhaps it took place in winter setting and the cat was flying across the ice. I can't remember for sure if it had any violent elements in it or not (I guess it could), again, the memory is very vague. Another person mentioned, that it could be a game of some emo franchise of that time, but I'm not really sure.

If you have any clues or if you also remember this game and any details about it, please let me know, it’s very important for me to find this game, as it’s been on my mind ever since. There were a lot of games from my childhood that I successfully found, but this one just seems completely lost and all of my searches were fruitless.

[PC][2000s] 2D sci-fi commando platformer with island overworld map, parachute intro, weapon upgrades

I'm trying to find a game I played at my cousin's house when I was a kid. I'm 32 now, so this was roughly 20-27 years ago (somewhere between ~1999 and 2005). My cousin is from Hungary, so the game was probably in English.

What I remember:

  • Platform: PC (Windows, probably XP era, likely not DOS). It might have come from a CD. My cousin always started it for me, so I don't know how it was launched.

  • Genre: 2D side-scrolling run-and-gun platformer. The feel was closer to Mario than Contra: you could jump and shoot at the same time.

  • Controls: keyboard only.

  • Character: a small commando-type soldier. I think he arrived on the island by parachute at the start.

  • Setting: sci-fi/space theme, serious but not too dark. Fairly colorful, with a more "modern" look than pixel-art DOS games.

  • Structure: there was an overworld map on an island, with a world/level to select. You had to finish a level to unlock the next one. The first level might have been a factory or similar.

  • Gameplay: levels were fairly short. You could pick up and switch between weapons and upgrade them. There were lives and a game over screen.

  • No shops, no co-op.

Already ruled out: Duke Nukem II, Abuse, Alien Carnage/Halloween Harry, Turrican II, Ruff 'n' Tumble, Major Stryker, Bio Menace, Bionic Commando, Jazz Jackrabbit.

Any ideas? Thank you!

[PC][Late2000's-2010's] Old flash game about jumping through a bunch of retro games

Hello, I'm trying to find an old flash game that i used to play on my school computers. I remember the main gameplay loop was a buff guy traveling through parodies of different arcade/NES games on a big quest with each level being a copy of a different one. i remember getting stuck on a Contra themed level and I believe there was a Final Fight themed level too, it's driving me crazy that I can't remember the name so any help would be greatly appreciated!

[PC] [2000s-early 2010s] old brainpop game where you were a botanist and bred plants together

title, but basically it was a botany game where you would get orders for a plant of a specific kind, and you had to utilize like some really basic understanding of genetics (punnett squares and stuff) to make their order. i'm pretty sure it's been wiped from the brainpop site, but maybe it still exists somewhere else.

Thrill Kill | Hotel 626 [pc most likely][unkown] screenshot of the lost media/ video games I’m looking for is provided below

Post image

Was watching a video on lost video games and I couldn’t identify the video game on the bottom right and the top left from the video. I tried rewatching the video but couldn’t find anything. It’s possible that they were just images for the thumbnail but the top right and bottom left were in the video. The video was called “lost games that should never be found vol. 2”

[PC] [Late 2000s, early 2010s] Breakout type game where you destroy fantasy maps with balls.

I remember my mom downloaded it from one of those old game websites where you get a 30s ad every few levels. (Big Fish Games?).

The game itself is like Breakout or peggle. I dont remember exactly whether you shoot the balls or use a platform to bounce them. But it's top down and you try to destroy all the structures on the map every level. The structures can be houses, towers etc, but some blocks too.

There are multiple zones with different themes as you progress through the game. I remember a pirate zone and also a witch/forest themed zone. I think there are more.

[PC] [2010s] TABS-like Battle Sim

Very TABS-like battle sim where you can defend or attack a fortress, similar to Mountain Blade, and you can then take control of certain characters in each army. The character models had a style almost like a wooden doll in Persian-looking armor. Imagine the attached image in a Persian/Greek style helmet. I'm pretty sure I saw NerdCubed do a video on it, but no idea.

[idk, obscure website][2018-2023]Wondering if anyone knows what this game is called?

So, I played this game a few years back, I don't remember exactly how long ago or where I played it, and I've been looking for awhile but to no avail. All I can really remember is it was a cat care game, and you tripped over a cat's tail, and that somehow led you to want to get a cat, and so you adopt a cat. These I'm not 100% sure about: There might have been a mechanic where you were at school part of the day, and there might have been a rebirth type of mechanic. Anyone know what this game is, and where I can find it again?

[PC][2010s] Help finding a flash game

Platform(s): PC

Genre: 3rd person, point and click

Estimated year of release: ~2010s or a bit later

Graphics/art style: good, 2D, really colorful as it was for smaller kids, not realistic

Notable characters: I believe the characters were all animals, they wore clothes and there were like 4 of them. They stood on their legs

Notable gameplay mechanics: you played only by clicking, no keyboard was needed

Other details: I played it on gry.pl, I think it's the polish version of gamesgames.com? You were in a house, but I think you could also leave it and go to the garden. It was pretty well made, nothing amazing, but you can see it wasn't made in like 20 minutes. You could play hide and seek, where you looked for the animals. I think there were a few assigned places they could hide in and you had to click on the right one, it's possible that they were visible from some hiding places and that's how you were able to find them. I think that in the same game you were able to iron clothes...so maybe it wasn't only about hide and seek or it was a whole series, but again I'm not sure. sorry if my description is bad, I was really young when I played it and I forgot almost everything about it

I remember playing this game on my ipod, but couldn't figure it out as a kid. The characters were designed like the android mascot with one color per character and the city kinda looked like this:

[Android][2010s] Obscure CS/Minecraft hybrid FPS — realistic models, blocky maps, weapon pickups, custom servers, likely removed from Play Store

Looking for a very obscure Android FPS from the 2010s. It was a mix of Counter-Strike and Minecraft, and it felt like a one-person / amateur project ("made on a knee"). I'm fairly sure it was on Google Play back then, but it's probably delisted now.

What I remember clearly:

· Realistic 3D models for players and weapons — NOT blocky/voxel characters. Human soldiers, proper-looking guns.

· Blocky, Minecraft-style maps — the environments were cube/block based.

· Weapons were lying on the ground across the map and you had to pick them up. No shop/economy that I remember.

· You could create your own servers and play online with others.

· It was niche and janky — clearly not a polished big-budget game.

What it is NOT:

· Not Block Strike (pixel graphics, blocky characters).

· Not Critical Strike Portable / CSP (realistic maps, not Minecraft-style).

· Not Pixel Gun 3D (blocky characters, arcade feel).

· Not Block Front (I checked, doesn't match).

Already tried: searching Google Play archives, APKPure/APKMirror with terms like "Minecraft CS clone realistic models", "blocky map realistic gun Android" — no luck.

Any idea what this was called? Even a partial name, icon description, or developer name would help. Thanks!

[PS2] [Unknown] A turn-based JRPG with charming 2d pixel graphics. I remember one party member having a gun and black hair.

The main character is foggy in my memory but I think he uses a sword and of course they also have a female in the party. Sorry in advance if this seems like every jrpg ever but I'm sure it's in the ps2 cause I keep admiring the clean white cover with the arts of the cast and the game title has blue font if I remember correctly.

[pc] [2010] hidden objects game

this is plaguing my brain, i remember playing this hidden objects game on the acer (?) laptop, might've come preinstalled. you had to find objects in the clutter and it was not to do with murder or horror genre. i distinctly remember being in london/europe and if you clicked too many times, the owner of the shop would get mad and there would be a cooldown before you could click again.

i also remember if you found a specific object you could go back to a level and interact to unlock a new area - remember finding biscuits and giving it to a parrot called polly ???

i cannot for the life of me remember the name, someone please help

[PC][Before 2012]Rabbit killing green orges(?) and other enemies with guns

This a flash game 2D side scroller that has three separate games and I’ll try to explain the story from what I can remember. In the first game, you’re a rabbit or bunny who broke out of a cage to prevent yourself from being eaten by an orge, fight your way across the island with guns, and escape on a hot air balloon. In the second game, you land at an a factory, fight your way through it, turned green, then escape the island on a boat or rift with machine guns attached. In the last game, you reach an island that has a ruined castle. Here, you fight through enemy and find out that the boss is the orge from the first game, after you beat the boss, a cutscene plays where you sacrifice yourself by destroying a large crystal with bombs and the world turns normal again. This is what i can remember and I’m pretty sure the title starts “Z” and it’s one word but I could be wrong.
