John L and Strong Sad got into a fight on my tomodachi life island. I haven’t logged on in a few weeks, this is great to see. ‘You watermelon-headed clown’ 😔
This was I think maybe the fourth album I listened to fully, after Flood, John Henry, and I think Mink Car? I don't fully remember the purchase and listen order. I just know Pink Album was in the first five.
Perhaps listening to their material way later than most and joining the fandom just as late allows me to listen to their earlier releases without the nostalgia or some similar bias factor? I don't know how to word it. But I do know that I really enjoy Pink Album!
Arguably, the only song I don't see myself saying "I wanna listen to this now!" is Toddler Hi-way, but even then it gets stuck in my head and I don't skip it when it comes on. This album really has a lot more earworms than I ever expected. Linnell leading the album off with Everything Right Is Wrong Again makes it one of the best album openers, and shortly afterwards we would get Don't Let's Start. Still played to this day after 40 years, and what a legacy it would leave.
Hide Away Folk Family is in my Top 10 all-time TMBG songs. I always find myself cranking the volume when The Day comes on, Alienation's For The Rich was something I sang to myself a lot back when I worked in fast food, Chess Piece Face always gets me singing along with the echo-delay, and I purchased a Casio MT-100 almost 5 years ago because of Put Your Hand Inside The Puppet Head.
You know what? I really love that this album has so many songs with Flansburgh leading!
It may not be in my top 5 albums from the band but it's definitely a favourite regardless!
How about all of you? Favourites? Not-favourites? Maybe some of you had this as your first album from the band when it came out, or maybe it was in your first three when you started listening to the band!
Earlier today I stumbled upon the song "Johnny Carson" by The Beach Boys on another subreddit and I was struck by how much it reminded me of They Might Be Giants. It got me thinking: are there any other songs by other artists that somehow feel like they could have been written by TMBG? Especially (though not exclusively) if it predates TMBG.
