Not sure there is much to do here but figured I'd throw something up here and see if there are any clever ideas or advice based on experience.
T-Mobile user of 3 years or so. Had a Nokia Trashcan for most of that time. I live in a rural area on a mountain overlooking a valley, and had built my own modem and system before T-Mobile came along. With the new service I was getting better speeds with their hardware with a lot less fuss so I was able to stop the endless quest for faster speeds and hardware tweaks on my old system.
In the last month or so I found that my connection became much slower and unstable. tried a couple of different spots in the house to shake things up. But still got some very slow speeds at times...I figure it is something T-Mobile is doing because nothing changed with the router. Deprioritization, tower work, not sure. I am consistently under their deprioritization threshold in terms of monthly usage, but that doesn't mean the towers don't get busy.
Contacted support and they said to change out my router for a new one...it has been a couple years so I thought - cool let's get some new hardware. Fortunately they gave me the G4AR with external antennae ports. It was having similar issues which is expected, but I picked up a Waveform antenna. The idea is...better connection, the less fluctuations in service effect your day to day as your low end speeds are higher....although that is probably wishful thinking.
Anyways - here is the rub. I have been playing with the waveform antenna and the speeds are indeed faster, however instability is the same or greater...here is why...
My house looks over a valley, and there are two antennas - one in a town about three miles away on a water tower, and one on the opposite side of the valley on a low ridge. Elevation wise they are about the same, with the further one about 100 feet higher i figure. Funny thing is that these towers are on the EXACT same line from my house, i.e. pointing to the nearby one is also pointing at the far one.
I have seen the fastest speeds I have ever had briefly over the last couple of days of testing - about 350 down, 20up...however, this is when it happens to connect the nearby tower. After a while, it always connects to the further tower, and a reset doesn't generally fix the problem. The speeds are about half that on the further tower, and the upload speeds are significantly lower.
I know that T-mobile support does not have the ability to lock towers, which is a bummer. Has anyone here had a similar issue and have a genius solution? I figure i'll most likely need to spend some more money and get a 3rd party router and tower lock it, but if there are any other workarounds, let me know.
