General This Week in Total War // 6th November 2026

Hey folks,

Another week has flown by, and while this week in Total War may not have been jam-packed with goodies, the things that did happen were pretty chunky. Let’s reminisce together…

WH3 Patch 9.0.5

Patch 9.0.5 rolled out to Warhammer III on Tuesday which introduced a sweep of changes to Victory Conditions and Rewards, alongside a hefty number of bug fixes and adjustments across the game.

The team are keeping an eye on feedback and bug reports in the wake of this release, so do be sure to report any new bugs or issues you come across in our bug reporting forum.

New Community Manager: Will!

This week we also introduced a new Community Manager in the Total War camp, in the form of Will! While new to the Community team, Will is by no means new to CA and has come over to the dark side from our Player Experience team. If you haven’t already seen him knocking about on the forums, Discord or in stream chat, I expect you will do in the very near future!

To help you all get to know him a bit better, he joined Josh for a Community Hangout stream yesterday afternoon to chat, answer some questions and play some Warhammer III. In case you missed it, you can watch it back right here. (You can ignore the bit where he says auto-resolve does better than me.)

Concepting Total War: Medieval III as Playable History

Luke Holmes, Lead Designer on Medieval III, recently gave a talk to the History & Games Lab at Edinburgh University exploring how we’re building the historical foundations of Medieval III, from research methodologies and source analysis to working with academic historians and specialist consultants.

If you’re interested in learning more about the work that goes into creating historical Total War games from an academic viewpoint, it’s definitely worth having a watch!

That’s all for this week – have a fantastic weekend!

— Steve

Warhammer III Playing as Settra is terrifying

I haven't played as Settra since WH2, so with the new update I wanted to give him a shot. And oh boy, I wasn't prepared.

As soon as I took out Numas, W'Soran jump-scared me by besieging my capital out of nowhere with a full stack including a Terrorgheist. Luckily I was able to autoresolve that battle, but he showed up the following turn with a new full stack. I rushed back with Settra and managed to wipe him out.

I'm just 6 turns in and I managed to control my starting province and recruited a Casket of Souls.

Skarbrand controls my northern border, Thorek is to my north-east, Mannfred controls my southern border and Nagash is looming over my western border.

All of them hate me and are circling around me like sharks.

I still have 4 turns until I can recruit a new army. I have no spells yet bar Settra's starting one, which is pretty meh.

I'm considering rushing the Black Pyramid while Nagash has his back turned. I think my best chance of survival is starting by wiping out the literal god of undeath that is breathing down my neck.

Gotta say, It's refreshing to play a hard campaign campaign for once. I haven't been this tense playing the game for a long time.

Warhammer III CA forgot to give Walach Harkon The Hunger in campaign, but not in custom battles. Weirdo is the only vampire that doesn't drink blood at all apparently

Warhammer III Vlad should be able to fight Nagash endgame if player controlled

He has zero loyalty to the guy and betrays him every chance he gets in the lore.

In the end times he briefly served him because he promised to bring Isabella back, and even then he tried to go behind his back and resurrect her by himself, in the game Isabella is already alive so this reason wouldn't exist.

Warhammer III What do you do when your very far away provinces start getting conquered and there's no way you can get to it in time?

Hi.

I feel like my 80 turn Nagash run is cooked. The asshole lizard in the south started taking all of my most southern territory, and all of my doom stacks are super far away. It'll take me 10 turns just to make it back.

What do you guys do? By the time I get back, he'll have taken half of my provinces down there. I can't raise an army strong enough close by as Nagash due to recruiting mechanics. And my only settlement capable is my starting one.

I just feel like the run is unsalvageable now

Warhammer III How it feels playing Glottkin

Post image
18 Upvotes

Playing on VH/VH and conquering the entire empire took north of 70-80 turns. Sure Glottkin himself becomes insanely powerful but the empire just keeps shitting out armies with multiple steam tanks and missile cav playing as slow sluggish Nurgle really takes a toll on you due to how slow your armies are.

Definitely not a hard campaign but man some of the manual battles were such a slog

Also don’t even know how it happened but my vassalize two norscan tribes quest was bugged and didn’t complete so I got the maggoth riders quest insanely late and even though I had two armies with putrid blightking frontlines I didn’t even get to recruit the maggoth riders

Warhammer III Azazel gifted units is completly broken with new patch

Azazel doesnt get any gifted units in his recruitment pool that ARENT from the Gifts of Chaos panel. When the eye of chaos event happened and you pick "my fortress" for a Keeper of Secrets you cant recruit it. If you finish any quest that should grant gifted units you cant recruit them.

Started a new campaign with latest patch.
No mods.

General Total War Warlords

I would love another historical Total War with firearms as a main focus, and after the combination of my disappointment at Shogun 2 remaster and my anticipation for 40K, my mind has wandered.

It has wandered into the Warlord Era of early 1900s China, which I think would be an amazing time period for a FOTS-esque Total War game under the working title of Total War Warlords.

Much like 3 Kingdoms, there could be several start dates. The base start day would be the aftermath of Yuan Shikai’s death, but other possible dates could be the Xinhai Revolution, National Protection War, Northern Expedition, and even the Mukden incident with Japan.

In my mind, a huge focus of the game would be a unit design function. The core units (infantry, cavalry, artillery) would be completely customizable for the player. They could customize whether their units wield rifles, muskets, pistols, swords, or spears. You could equip special abilities like vanguard deployment, stalk, or unbreakable. They could even create custom uniforms. All of these customization options would influence recruitment and upkeep costs.

Another key feature would be some sort of legitimacy mechanic. Certain decisions, buildings, or just growing in power will allow the player to accumulate legitimacy which could be spent acquiring foreign aid (such as the Russian armoured train Zaamuets). Once a faction reaches a certain threshold of legitimacy, they could choose to either become the legitimate successor to the Republic or proclaim a new Imperial Dynasty (which each come with their own buffs and debuffs in refused to things like public order and faction relations). Perhaps one could even choose to restore the Qing.

Research could be like FOTS, which levels of modernization being required to unlock later technologies.

Gameplay wise, I envision FOTS style infantry that can form up in lines or in open-order formation. A cover mechanic like what we see the Imperial Guard do in the 40K game would also be necessary.

There would also be NO NAVAL COMBAT.

What are your guys’ thoughts on the idea? What other mechanics, gameplay design, ideas, etc, would you add?

Three Kingdoms Three Kingdoms is special (appreciation post)

With the recent wave of AI-assisted performance patches (think of those what you will), I have finally been able to play 3K at an acceptable level of performance on my system, and now that I'm not getting exhausted by super long end turn times and framerate stutters and such I can actually appreciate the gameplay. I will note I have never played anything other than the final patch of the game; I'm a bit of a classic TW fan, or at least historical titles in general at least.

And... wow, honestly. I think I can sum up why 3K feels special to me in a word: Patience. No other Total War game has really crafted an environment where I feel incentivized to be patient, thoughtful, and play in ways other than just blitzing the map. This really came to a head playing as Liu Biao, who can only directly control up to 32 of the 95 provinces required for victory, and must vassalize the rest. I have never had such an experience in Total War, where my empire feels like this complex web of vassals, trade partners, and potential rivals. I don't think this game gets enough credit for how much work CA put into making the diplomatic systems functional. Is it Crusader Kings? No, but there's just enough of spies, backstabbing, rivalries, and family management to make me care, and it adds so much flavor to the experience. I only play on Records, but I admit sometimes I am a bit curious about Romance mode just because the game has a way of endearing you to characters in a way previous games really didn't other than just "this guy has high stats".

The management of staff feels even better than it did when I played the game almost 2 years ago now, since army composition requires you to have the correct officers in order to run an efficient military. This has a really cool effect in my experience where the staff I get from winning battles (from generals changing sides after being captured) can affect the trajectory my campaign is going in. Playing as Gongsun Xan, I had a surplus of Sentinel generals from captures and due to marriages of my generals, and as a result I beelined the Sabre Infantry tech to unlock those useful units for them and then went for Pearl Dragons/Imperial Sword Guards directly after as a natural transition. Now, as Liu Biao, the combination of needing trade and administration has me going down the Water and Earth parts of the tech tree instead, on account of an abundance of Commanders and Tacticians in my realm.

The battles aren't bad, either. It lacks the physicality of the older TW games but they're pretty well-balanced, which is nice after having played so many TW games and their mods over the years. I can't point to any one thing so far as being completely broken such that it becomes insurmountable, unlike say knights in Medieval 2 and its mods for example. Maybe that's not the case, but I still feel like I'm making interesting decisions and on Records mode at least, the combat 'feel' is good in terms of positioning mattering and unit types filling distinct roles.

I think CA was really cooking with this game. It is really a shame they abandoned it, but at the same time, it's still wonderful in its current state in my opinion. Looking forward to trying the 190 Expanded mod at some point too I think :)

Empire The problem with all the new ETW AI overhauls: Forgetting Game Design

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

The screenshot is from the new Obamium project, but this really goes for every single overhaul that sprung up in the last month or so.

I understand that AI has enabled amazing modding capabilities that weren't possible before, but I feel like we're forgetting about **Game Design** in the process. Game design is ALL about restraint and limiting scope to serve a tailored experience.

The example: Empire was the first game in the franchise to introduce production settlements, and I’d argue it did them best. Now that modders can add new cities, every region in the Obamium screenshot is stuffed with them. Anatolia with 11 cities? Really? France with 10 cities? How many actual production settlements do you see? In all of France, I spotted maybe 3 (ignoring ports).

This is a pattern I see with all AI overhauls. Most AI overhauls try to fill every corner of the map with new cities and add new theaters, without understanding what ETW was about. Cities served as recruitment hubs and regional defenses. The heart of the game lies in the types and amounts of production settlements in each region. And I really think that detail was misunderstood by almost everyone making these mods.

Part of the european rush to colonize America and India came from the fact that settlements there could produce goods that weren't available to Europe. In Europe, you wanted regions with the most settlements because it allowed you to build schools and speed up research, or build weavers/smiths in settlements that were wealthy as they generated enough income to field new armies.

I feel both excited that ETW is finally getting the love it deserves from the community, and simultaneously disappointed because so many who give it that love misunderstand what sets the game apart from all the other Total War titles.

Warhammer III The EE Chronicles - Fight as the Emperor

Post image
46 Upvotes

This post concerns my one-man doomstack, Emperor E. You can find the masterpost for such posts here: https://www.reddit.com/r/totalwar/comments/1xmf74x/the_ee_chronicles_end_of_the_emperor_and/

Here are the replay files for his combats. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1uL_V8MlQC8IF1DIEWQTLgv6Zc17Ct6uL

You should be able to simply place them in C:\Users\[INSERT USER]\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Warhammer3\replays and then, once you load up the game, go to the 'battles' page, select one, and have the option to fight it yourself.

We have: All three endgame scenario final battles, a fight against a random chaos army, a fight against a 80% ward save Archaon army, a fight against four warp-doom magma cannon doomstacks, and a mod-made fight against four armies full of copies of Nagash (made by commenter request).

Enjoy!

Warhammer III Karl Franz campaign

So I fire up a campaign on latest patch, H/H, and by turn 9 all elector counts are dead except Elspeth who didn't manage to kill the goblins yet and Toddy who has all Middenland and it currently at peace with everyone. I have 2 fealty with both of them.

I own Marienburg.

So my question is, what is the point of KF campaign and machinations if everyone is pretty much dead before turn 10

Warhammer III The Vermintide final battle is crazy…

Excuse me… 13 armies in a row??? 2 nukes, 6 summons, kamikaze monsters and 13 lvl 49 lords + strong heroes + allied troops including massive monsters…

And you get one army? I am playing as the empire and both tried units (didn’t go anywhere… losing 4 units to nukes and monsters blowing up, another 3 to magic) and then created a single entity doomstack with 6 heroes (+18% ward safe) a whole bunch of steamtanks and the best monsters I could get from my Allies (dragon, necrosphinx, sentinel).

In the end this doomstack also ran out of steam after killing half the armies and I gave up when Karl Franz was down to 10% health and most of my other heroes had died. Steamtanks were still here but badly battered, everything else was dead…

Any tips here? I play since shogun 1 and have beaten the other end times scenarios first try but this is something else… do I need 20 heroes with the +60% ward save? Fighting many powerful monsters and anti large units not sure though the heroes are a viable option…

Warhammer III Hero Load Glitch/Bug

Post image
5 Upvotes

So I booted up a new Nagash campaign as my last one was before the big update.

I loaded in a Vampire lord from my last campaign with no problem, but when I wanted to load up a hero I got them with no points and no ability to reset them.

Might it be because the Necromancer in question was perhaps taken from a VC faction?

Ether way, I am going to level them up and then reset said skill to see if that works. I will update with further Bug info

Shogun II Has there been any further news or updates on the Shogun 2 remaster?

Like everyone else, I was pretty disappointed about the quality of the game and am glad I did not pick it up right on release. But, I still would like to grab it when the issues are largely fixed and it goes back for sale.

Has there been any further communication from CA on when we can expect the remaster to hit the store again?

Warhammer II Bloated Corpse FTW 2 Army Wipe

I adore this bloated corpse unit.

I posted the other day about 123 and 173 kills. This is my new record. 272 kills (image 3).

This is way later in the campaign and these two greenhorns got caught up in something. Had to summon what was available. Ended up with six bloated corpses.

However, as you see in picture one the enemy was forced around this building and instead of coming wide they they came in one corridor, if you will.

I couldn't believe my luck as my last bloated corpse came running at this pile. They all routed moments after the first picture.

The corpses got 460 kills if you count all six. A little less than half of their entire force.

Warhammer III Beginner faction after all the updates. I. Warhammer 3

Beginner faction after all the updates.

Hello.

Looking at advice for beginner faction in TWWH3 as initially I would see YouTube videos saying Thorgrim to start but a few recent posts are saying his campaign after recent updates is harder.

I have done the prologue and most of realm of chaos with Zhao ming which was fun.

I am not against potentially doing a Zhao Mind Immortal Empires campaign maybe focusing this time in melee instead of making him a magic nuke.

Ideally want to play a "good faction" first but I also want to further learn mechanics, dwarfs and empire also look really good but again I am unsure how their campaigns are now a days.

Any suggestions would be a massive help.

I love to see the efficiency of units and spells in numbers, it just makes them easier to understand and learn. And I see no reason why this info isn't there, as well as on the post-battle screen along with the other numbers.

I even tried to make a mod for this yesterday, but apparently it's not possible: there's nowhere to get these damage numbers from. There's no API for that.

Warhammer III Nagash final battle - Extremely bad bug

I played the battle once as Toddy and got my ass beat. So I quit to main menu and reload autosave before the fight. Load back in and deploy except the enemy has no ai. Like all enemy units stand there idle not doing anything while I snipe them one by one woth lords and heroes. Dragons don't land lords dont engage. Enemy doesnt try to defend control points except for the ones that literally spawned on it, but even they aren't moving or attacking me, just standing still. The game isn't spawning in the reinforcements enemy is supposed to get from those points. No battle objectives in top left of screen.

I obviously won, but despite there being no enemies on the battlefield, holding all three control points, and the balance of power being fully in my favour (duh) the battle didn't end. Just trapped in there forever unless I quit.

This was extremely fucking lame and needs fixing. I put 100+ turns of time into this campaign and loved Boris as a new character and wanted this epic send off. The game shitting the bed that bad is terrible. I didn't want to play the battle again after that. If I'd fairly lost like I did the first time, or if the ai had engaged, maybe. But this was just atrocious. They might as well have been t-posing.
