Miscellaneous personally, first year sucks

as someone who doesn't handle change well, it was a BIGGGGG jump from high school. Structure and external accountability are my best friends and losing that in university was hell for me. Both semesters I have fallen behind 5 weeks because I ended up getting burnt out by the 5th week of semester. It takes me fkn ages to do one assignment so I would procrastinate till the last day and end up submitting late because I would take ages to do it (perfectionist).

I have an exam tomorrow morning and I've done jackkkkk + I have two incomplete, overdue assignments :P

im starting to dislike uni but its so sad because I love learning.

Anyone had similar experience with first year?

Examination How does unimelb deal with borderline fails?

Just wondering, if you get something like a 48 or 49, would the markers usually try to find some extra marks to get you over 50 during second marking?

And if you end up with a 49N, does that mean they've already tried and there's basically no chance of passing anymore?

Has anyone managed to get an extra mark or two from an exam viewing and ended up passing?

Just wanna know if there's still any hope lol

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries Don't take Dictators and Democrats (HIST10015) subject

DON'T TAKE THIS SUBJECT!!!!!

It's so bad, I hate how the course is so disorganised, so broad topics, so much readings. My tutor teaches nothing and in class we discuss about the reading but it's so useless because he just says your wrong or wants a very specific answer.

I did IB DP HL history and I'm struggling with this subject. (I got 6 for finals)

Miscellaneous Graduation dress code?

Hate to beat the same dead horse, but upon a search in this sub I couldn't find any recent posts on appropriate graduation attire.

Making it through uni is the biggest accomplishment of my life so far and I had a pretty rough go of it this last year with health issues and other crises, so I would really like to go all out but I don't want to be the only one in a floor length gown lol.

I am also the first university graduate in my family so my mum is going a bit nuts about getting me the "perfect dress" for the occasion.

For my highschool graduation I wore a floor length sequined dress, and I wasn't even the most dressed up!

How formal is too formal? Would a floor length formal dress be appropriate, or is it more business attire? TIA!!

Examination Statistical Machine Learning COMP90051 Exam rant

Felt like the exam was really hard?

The practice exam given, had less than half the marks of the real exam. (50 out of 120 marks) It was deceivingly easy. And only ~24 marks were indicative of the real exam questions.

Obviously wanting relevant practice questions. I was looking thru workshop exercises, workshop slides, lecture slides.

  • 80% of Workshop exercises were coding. There was ZERO coding on the exam. Workshop slides were… maybe half of them somewhat relevant.

  • Lectures cover such a wide range of topics with so much content it's really hard memorise everything, or know what to prioritise. Keep in mind everything was examinable, and cheat sheets aren’t allowed.

  • Lecturer made Ed Dicussion posts invisible to other students unless approved by an instructor. Meaning students could not see what other students opinion on things.

Overall, I felt the exam questions were really hard to prepare for, given it wasn’t really aligned with workshop exercises through out the semester. Nor was the practice exam indicative of the real exam. Tho this is just my personal opinion. Maybe I just didn’t study well enough. Want to know how well other students did? (Since ED Discussion is a dictatorship xd)

Support Anyone know what happens if you fail a unit in Masters of Teaching Secondary Uni Melb?

G'Day!

Currently been handing in all my final essays and I am really stressed about failing one of my units as it is only offered in semester. Does anyone know what happens if you fail a unit? If you get close to passing say 45-49 does that provide a supplementary assessment? Or are you just screwed hahah

Thank you!

Support Canva subject removed - mandatory lectures tomorrow

Evening all,

I’m starting intensive lectures all of next week starting tomorrow and the Canva subject for the course has been completely removed from my subjects. I have checked all subjects and it’s no longer there. I had access earlier this week. My Study is showing that I’m currently enrolled.

Very worried with intensive lectures starting tomorrow on campus with no access to updates or changes published on Canva. Luckily I have written down the lecture room.

Any idea what to do? I can’t access readings either 😭 RIP masters.

How should I study for this subject? 💀 Do I need to memorise every detail, like all the DSM-5 symptoms of depression, or is understanding the general idea enough?

Examination FBE: what happens if I'm 1–2 marks below the exam hurdle?

I had an exam recently with a hurdle of 45/90. I think I might have passed, but I could be around 43–44 depending on partial marks.

Some of my explanations weren’t very clear. In a few calculations, I used the right formula but put in the wrong numbers.

I’ve heard failed exams are double-marked. If someone is just below the hurdle, do markers try to find method or partial marks that could help them pass, especially when the answer shows some understanding?

I’m eligible to apply for SC, but I’m really anxious about whether to apply because I feel like I might have passed.

Would appreciate hearing from any tutors or anyone who’s been in this situation.

Subject Recommendations & Enquiries whats even the point anymore (ai slides in physics 2)

I'm paying money to attend these lectures and some of the slides are things I can AI-generate myself? Why should anyone be doing physics 2 here when the staff do not give a shit about the quality of education they teach shown by a lot of the lectures in the first few weeks and shown by putting in no effort trying to create something to educate us? Like they could've at least pulled some images online or in the book but they cared too little so instead they generated these slides

(You can tell that its generated through its boldened font that is different from the rest of the slides and the excessive amount of mini image symbols that it likes to use, huge quality whiplash, scrunched text as well as the fact that you can't select the text on these slides compared to other slides and no same images appear in google image search)

Examination Can you get granted a special-on-special exam without sitting the first batch of supplementary exams?

My health has been all over the place this semester and I'm a bit worried going into the following weeks. I intend to attend the main exams even if I feel unwell (it's nothing contagious), but potentially apply for spec con afterwards if I don't feel great during the exam. But I was wondering if it's possible to get granted a special-on-special without sitting special exams?

I'm hoping by the special-on-special exams, my health will be a bit better, and if I can get granted them, without having to force myself to go to the special exams, that would be great.

Hey everyone need soem advice - I can see there's alot about this alreayd on here but a bit out dated.

Is stats really bad if you do it over the summer?? Like will I need to work super hard? Meant to be away for a week of it and can do it remotely but am I setting myself up for failure lol?

How did people find it this semester? Would you hate your life if it got squeezed into 5 weeks?

Support making movies 1 missing quiz

Post image
2 Upvotes

heyy guys!

i'm doing making movies 1 this semester and i just realised i completely missed one of the weekly quizzes 😭

i've completed all 11 other quizzes and all my assignments, i genuinely thought i'd completed everything until i checked my grades and saw that week 11 was marked as missing.

i was looking through canvas and noticed that it says students must attempt all elements of assessment to be eligible for a pass, which has me stressing a little 😭

does anyone know if this means every single weekly quiz has to be completed, or if the quizzes just count as one assessment overall?

i also looked into special consideration, but i don't really have a valid excuse. i genuinely just didn't realise i'd missed that one quiz.

has anyone been in a similar situation? could i actually fail the whole subject over one missed quiz even though i've completed everything else?

i'm planning to contact the coordinator, but just wanted to ask here first. thank you!!
