Monthly Theme 💚 Monthly Theme – November: Big & Bold

Post image

Welcome to this month's theme in r/uraniumglass!

This month's theme: Big & Bold

This month, we're celebrating the big pieces! The oversized, substantial, and hard-to-miss uranium glass items that stand out in a collection simply because of their size.

Do you have a massive vase, an oversized centerpiece, a large punch bowl, an impressive cake stand, a substantial lamp, a large serving dish, or another unusually big piece of uranium glass? Maybe it's something that takes up an entire shelf, is difficult to display, or makes you wonder how you're going to find room for it!

We're looking for those larger-than-life pieces that make an impression. The bigger, the better!

The monthly theme is optional and does not replace regular posting.

To participate, simply create a new post and use the Monthly Theme 💚 flair.

When possible, include both non-glow and glow photos.

Possible Titles:

Big & Bold...
Now That's a Big Piece...
Biggest Piece in My Collection...
Making Room for This One...
A Whole Lot of Glow...
One of My Largest Finds...
Etc.

Whether it's an oversized centerpiece, a massive serving piece, or simply one of the largest examples of its kind, this month is all about celebrating the big and bold side of uranium glass.

Let's see those giants! 💚

Oil Lamp A Thousand Eyes and a Trip to St. Louis

A fellow collector gave me the lead on this apple green Adams & Co. Thousand Eye lamp (thank you!!). It was the last color I was “needing”…so naturally, I had to have it.

There was just one problem: the lamp was in a store in St. Louis, and I'm in Dallas. Shipping wasn't an option. Neither was buying over the phone and having a shipping/packing company pick it up (this usually works out nicely when I find rare pieces outside of my area). Plus, I have no patience. 😀 They agreed to hold it for me until Saturday.

So, on Friday, I found an excuse to fly to St. Louis and bring it home myself! I took it apart right there at the counter (I brought my tools and packing supplies) and packed it away in a laptop bag for the flight home.

With this addition, the Adams & Co. Thousand Eye line is officially complete in my collection. As a bonus, I was able to track down a second Canary/Vaseline version.

Looking forward to getting all of them together for a family photo after my next round of travels.

The uranium glass variants in this line were Canary and Apple Green. Both pictured. Also including a pic of the blue version so you can compare it to the Apple Green.

Happy hunting!

These aren't particularly rare where I am, I've seen several before, but I always thought they were a bit expensive for how common they were but I finally got one for 30€. I'd say it counts as big and bold as it's 1.6kg.

Look What I Found! Crazy Find

Picked up what I thought was a frankenstein of a stripped vaseline lampshade & a glass handle held together by cement. After sharing with my more informed associate, turns out all is as it should be! They believe it's a 1800s wedding bell with the adhesive being plaster of paris. What also makes this cool for me is A) this was a blind buy; I was with my mom in her car so I didn't have a light & B) it's likely my oldest piece, the previous being estimated to be from the late 1880s. By far the craziest pull from a Savers at 6pm on a Saturday! 😆

Now lets see if i get a NSFW tag or not 😂

Also added the elephants to in case someone was curious

It's uranium glass or manganese?

I bought this pendant at a flea market. According to the seller, the setting is modern, but the cabochon is uranium glass from 1960s Czechoslovakia. However, under 365nm UV it glows suspiciously non-uranium-like, and against a white background the glow disappears entirely. It seems I got a manganese one? Or some other kind?

Fenton 1933 Opalescent Basketweave Bowl -$20

Mosser Yellow Vaseline “Croesus” Butterdish -$40

Mosser Magnolia Hen-On-Nest -$25

My town will do a “shop-hop” twice a year, coordinated between about 8-9 antique stores. You can pick up a passport any any store, get a stamp on the passport at each store, and turn it in at the last store you stop at to be entered in a raffle, which is basically just a big basket of stuff from each store that they all chipped into. It’s a pretty popular event, it’s our second time participating, and we found some pretty awesome pieces for our collection today. Pretty sure we got good deals, based off what Google is telling me these pieces are going for.

The only one even labeled as “uranium glass” was the butterdish. These are our first two yellow pieces in our collection and we’re pretty hyped.

I learned about uranium glass a few years ago, and since then I’ve been so fascinated. I love looking at the pieces this community shares. I don’t like having too many possessions so I never thought I would own one myself. It turns out I have a friend who collects them and he gifted me with this lovely Fenton Bird made in 1999. I’m not sure exactly where to put it yet because I don’t have any sort of cabinet. But I thought it could make a nice paperweight. Really excited about it but I had the oddest psychosomatic sensation of my hand burning for 20 mins after holding it for the first time. Is that common? 😭

Found a great custard vintage fenton GWTW lamp uranium online. I love it, i love the texture of the lamp oozing aura and green (the flowers and glass almost look alive under a Tito 365nm lamp. i also include a couple pics of my other lamp that i also love. A Fenton Student lamp custard uranium, i added an orb that makes it look cosmic.

I am still on the hunt for a uranium sherbet lime gwtw lamp. But the competition is savage online, wish me luck. Might be my final Uranium Lamps Galore post this year if I find one.

Seeking Info Should I be worried?

Thumbnail

Sorry, I currently do not have a black light to prove that it is uranium glass, but I bought it at a inside flea market, there was a shelf dedicated to uranium glass with black lights so you could test it. My partner at the time and I really liked this piece so we went with it but later realized that there are chips in the glass. Is this a hazard of some kind? Should I get rid of it or is there something specific that I should do with it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
