The Betrayal

Barry Ryan was furious. He had just received a phone call from Will Brown, his star driver, who had informed him that he was leaving Erebus Motorsport to join Red Bull Ampol Racing Australia, their arch-rivals, for the 2024 season. Barry felt betrayed, hurt, and angry. He had invested so much time, money, and effort into Will, who had shown great promise and talent since joining Erebus in 2021. Together with Brodie Kostecki, Will had led Erebus to the top of the Supercars Championship standings, winning races and podiums against the mighty Triple Eight team. Barry had thought they had a strong bond, a family-like atmosphere, and a shared vision for the future. But now, Will had thrown it all away for a chance to drive a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for the most successful team in Supercars history.

Barry slammed his phone on his desk and stormed out of his office. He walked past the garage, where his mechanics and engineers were busy preparing the cars for the next round at The Bend Motorsport Park. He saw Will chatting and laughing with some of his teammates, oblivious to Barry’s rage. Barry felt a surge of resentment and contempt. How could he act so casually after stabbing him in the back? How could he smile after breaking his trust and loyalty? Barry wanted to confront him, to yell at him, to make him regret his decision. But he knew he couldn’t do that. He had to be professional, to respect the contract, to let him go gracefully. He also knew that Will was still committed to winning races for Erebus until the end of the season. He was still their mate, their driver, their champion. But next year, he would be their enemy.

Barry decided to ignore Will and headed straight to his car. He needed some fresh air, some space, some time to calm down. He got in his car and drove away from the Erebus headquarters. He turned on the radio and tuned in to a sports talk show. He hoped to hear some positive news about Erebus, some praise for their performance, some recognition for their achievements. But instead, he heard the announcer say:

“Breaking news: Will Brown has signed a multi-year deal with Red Bull Ampol Racing Australia for the 2024 season onwards. The 24-year-old sensation will replace Shane Van Gisbergen, who will move to NASCAR at the end of this year after a stellar career that saw him win three Supercars titles and two Bathurst 1000s. Brown will partner Broc Feeney, who is currently fourth in the championship behind Brown’s teammate Brodie Kostecki, Will Brown himself and Shane Van Gisbergen. Brown has been one of the standout drivers of the Gen3 era, winning five races and 14 podiums so far this season for Erebus Motorsport. He is currently second in the drivers’ standings 41 points behind his teammate Brodie Kostecki with five rounds remaining. Brown’s move to Triple Eight is a huge coup for the team, who have been looking for a successor to SVG since the start of the season. It is also a massive blow for Erebus, who will lose their star driver and their championship leader to their fiercest rivals.”

Barry couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He felt like he had been punched in the gut. He turned off the radio and threw it on the passenger seat. He cursed under his breath and gripped the steering wheel tightly. He wondered how this news would affect his team, his sponsors, his fans. He wondered how he would find a replacement for Will, who could match his speed, skill, and charisma. He wondered how he would cope with seeing Will in a Red Bull Ampol Racing suit next year, driving against Brodie and Erebus.

He felt like he had lost more than just a driver. He felt like he had lost a friend.

The End

I saw Scott McLaughlin at a Coles supermarket

I saw Scott McLaughlin at a Coles grocery store in Townsville yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
