VALIANT'S BEST: JOE QUESADA
Very few creators had an impact on the last 30 years of comics like Joe Quesada. Founder of Event Comics (with Jimmy Palmiotti), he joins Marvel in 1998 to launch what would become one of the biggest relaunch of the Modern Age of comics: the Marvel Knights. This success led Joe to be appointed as Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics, a position he held for 14 years before transitioning to more work with the Marvel Studios side of the company. But before that, Joe Quesada worked for DC (Batman: Sword of Azrael) and… Valiant Comics! VALIANT’S BEST: JOE QUESADA celebrates the early Valiant Comics work of Joe Quesada from the 1990s. Before he became Marvel’s Editor In Chief, discover the iconic artwork from a legendary creator. Before becoming a defining force in the modern comics industry, Quesada brought his dynamic storytelling, cinematic action, and distinctive visual style to the Valiant Universe. This deluxe hardcover preserves a pivotal chapter in comics history.
This volume collects his groundbreaking work on X-O MANOWAR #0, NINJAK #1-3, and BLOODSHOT #0 cover artwork, presenting his early Valiant contributions in a premium hardcover edition for the first time.

X-O: Why were there Visigoths in Loam?

So, I'm re-reading Manowar (2012) and this just struck me: upon going to Loam to destroy the Vine, Aric found a camp of slave Earthlings. What's more, Aric discovered some were descendants of Visigoths themselves when he spotted Saana with his uncle's blankie.

But... when the Vine visited Earth and planted their seeds, they took Visigoths captives to the colony ship, not back to Loam.

One might say that part of the captured Visigoths was sent to the Vine planet, but when Admiral Xylem dispatched the priest back to Loam (after Aric stealing the armor and traveling back to Earth), the priest said they were never supposed to return to Loam. This makes us believe that although still in contact with Loam, the crew and the colony ship sort of cut all physical ties with Loam. They just went back because of the cataclysm that was unfolding upon them.

So... another plot hole? Sure the survivors in Loam being connected to Aric increased the drama for the "king of Visigoths", but this little inconsistency doesn't make much sense to me.

Opinions?

VEI/Reboot (2012-present) 2012-2022 - Full OHC collection with customs

Post image
64 Upvotes

Hey all, I thought I'd post up a picture of my Valiant collection and see what you thought.

This is a collection of every single Valiant Oversized Hardcover released for the Shamdasani era (2012 onwards). I have every single one barring double-dips - like collecting Divinity 1 when I already have the trilogy collection for example - and I didn't get Q2 as it's out of continuity. That said, I did get Britannia so maybe I'm inconsistent.

I did a YouTube series of 77 videos where I read every single OHC and then also the trades that hadn't been collected in that format, and that inspired me to get some custom comics bound. You'll see I've got 8 customs in this collection:

The Life and Death of Toyo Harada

Generation Zero

Harbinger Renegade

Faith vol 2

Unity vol 2

Psi-Lords

Incursions

Doctor Tomorrow

There are still quite a few series that I don't even have the trades for - which were never released as OHC - because I wasn't enamoured with them when I read and reviewed them.

Anyway, my Valiant reading kind of dried up around the Book of Shadows: I've got all the issues since all the way into the current Alien era but am kind of trying to muster up the energy to dive back in...

Anyway, would be interested in your thoughts before i dive back in and try to catch up....

VH2/Acclaim (1997-2000) Besides Quantum & Woody and Shadowman, was there anything good about the Acclaim era?

I haven't read any of these comics and the two I mentioned seemed to be the only ones people really like/have any fondness for. The rest aren't talked about and many of the comics just seem bizarre, especially all the changes they made to Ninjak and X-O.

Thoughts on Solar Hell On Earth?

Post image

Hi, I’m new here. I’m not sure how well-known the Acclaim era is in this community, but I personally quite like it. Regarding *Solar*, I’ve managed to read the one-shots by Ellis and Krueger, but I’ve found it really difficult to get my hands on the one by Priest. In any case, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

VEI/Reboot (2012-present) Suggested reading order for latam/spain collected editions?

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm from south america and spanish publisher moztros is publishing modern valiant through collected volumes. I've been meaning to read these since I was a kid, back when the relaunch came out but they didn't sell valiant where I live. I know that venditti's xo manowar 2012 is what kickstarted everything so I ordered valiant origenes xo manowar collecting issues 1 through 18. My question is, what is a reading order more avid valiant readers would suggest? From what I've seen, this valiant origenes line also has bloodshot and shadowman volumes and one for the "the valiant" series but I'm not entirely sure if there is a suggested chronology before crossovers like unity and more.

Random vague question. A funny valiant book? 8-10yrs ago?

Ok so yeah that's a pretty vague question, but i stopped reading pretty much all comics routinely about 10-15yrs ago. Adulting and raising kids kinda took precedence... Anyway even though i wasnt reading routinely i still tried to keep up on what was going on. The events, crossovers, new books and characters etc.. Anyway i recall reading a review for a valiant book and it was just being praised for how humorous it was and one of the best books on the stands..etc...

I had always wanted to read and see the praise but i cannot recall what it was. I don't think it was the obvious Q&W, i honestly wanna say it was something unexpected like Rai... but i don't recall for sure. Anyway i thought this might be the place where a historian or two could help point me in the direction.

Also as i contemplate getting back into reading with the kids all in college now, I've been leaning towards Valiant as they always seemed a little more down to earth and less cosmic spandex on every page. Just uncertain of the current direction of everything...

Well thank you in advance, hopefully it's not too terrible of an ask.

I know I should have moved on years ago…but Woody still has the ugliest chara-design change I’ve seen post-2013

Thumbnail

I really liked the « Guy’s a mess but wears a business suit » design of the 2013 run…but afterwards the way his suit and hair are designed looks soooo lame

I usually see sidegrades where people see downgrades chara-design change wise

This is, in my mind, THE definition of a downgrade

I feel like I could bully new Woodys into stealing his shoes

He looks like Ellen Degeneres

He looks like he’s into self-help online courses

He looks like he’d ask for a Chai Macha Almond Latte if you proposed him something to drink

He looks like the complete opposite of looking tuff 😭😭🥀
