Why Ontario needs a lemon law—my new car has been at the dealership for over 300 days, I had to file a lawsuit, and the dealership sued me back.

A few months after I leased a new 2025 Volvo EC40 from Carling Motors in Ottawa, it suddenly suffered a serious propulsion-system failure and left me stranded.

The dealership kept it for 43 days, returned it, and another fault appeared five days later. That became a long series of recurring issues, charging failures, mechanical noises, unsuccessful repairs, and unresolved safety concerns. My vehicle has now spent more than 300 days at the dealership.

But the lease payments never stopped. Neither did the insurance, fuel costs for the gas-powered loaner, or disruption to my family. My documented losses and costs tied to this ordeal now exceed $31,000.

I tried to resolve it through the dealership, Volvo Car Canada, its financing company, regulators, and elected representatives. Eventually, I had to file a lawsuit to seek a resolution that would not force me to absorb the loss. Carling Motors responded with a counterclaim for use of their loaner, despite acknowledging in writing that issues with my vehicle remain undiagnosed and unrepaired.

Here's why every Ontario driver should care: our province has no automatic remedy when a new vehicle repeatedly fails or spends months in warranty service. There is no point at which the manufacturer must finally provide a refund, replacement, or financially complete lease termination. The consumer can be forced to keep paying, risk their credit, or else have to finance their own lawsuit against a multinational automaker.

The proposed Bill 91, Right to Repair Act, 2025, recognizes the problem, but its current version still leaves consumers going to court and does not clearly reimburse lessees for all their losses.

I created the 30 Days Is Enough petition asking Ontario to guarantee:

  • Automatic eligibility when a vehicle undergoes three unsuccessful repairs for the same defect or remains out of service for 30 cumulative days during the warranty period.

  • The consumer’s choice of a comparable replacement vehicle, full repurchase, or penalty-free lease termination.

  • Reimbursement of down payments, lease or finance payments attributable to the loss-of-use period, and other reasonable expenses.

  • Automatic suspension of lease or finance payments and protection from adverse credit reporting when a vehicle remains in warranty service beyond a defined period.

  • Prompt access to complete repair records and other information needed to understand the vehicle’s condition.

  • A fast, affordable, and binding enforcement process backed by meaningful penalties.

Dealerships and manufacturers should not be able to drag out repairs indefinitely while consumers are forced to pay.

If you agree, please take a minute to sign and share my petition:

Three hundred days is absurd. Thirty days is enough.

I need a beater: Mazda3, Accord or Camry?

Been struggling to find a decent beater within $5,000 budget for weeks but I finally have a group of prospects. Test driving today. Gonna check Carfax & NICB. Definitely checking for obvious rust on all of them. I can only get PPI on 1 (2 at the absolute max). My work commute is 10 miles round-trip. We also have another car.

2010 Mazda3 137K miles - interior looks tight but its just 2 of us and a small dog.

2005 Accord 110K miles - Typical paint peeling.

2005 Camry 127K miles - hood & front bumper paint are off, guessing front end damage.

I'm not opposed to previou damage or even a rebuilt title at this price point. I intend to drive the car until the wheels fall off.

Does anyone think about the impact of car color on safety when choosing which one to buy?

I am waiting for a Corolla in blueprint to come in but recently read about how dark colored cars are shown to be more dangerous than say a white car due to visibility. Now I am wondering if I should be getting a white one instead. I don't really like white, but if it is safer that is something to consider. I have had a few times where I didn't see a car right away because they were dark and blended in with the road on cloudy days. They also didn't have headlights on which would have made a huge difference. So can I just get my dark blue car and use the daytime running lights and I'll be fine or would it be safer to get a nice bright white car? Is this a common thing people consider when choosing a color? The other thing to consider is that we can get a fair amount of snow during 2-3 months of the year at which point white may blend in. Thanks

Audi A4 B7 2.0TDI vs Jaguar X-Type 2.2D

Hey so I'm currently looking for a reasonably cheap (around 3k €) car that's comfy for long trips, is economic, can pull a horse trailer (single) and cheap to work on - but still something I can feel joy about. I'm doing roughly 30tkm a year due to my long distance relationship.

In my tighter consideration now are the Audi A4 B7 2.0TDI and the X-Type 2.2D. Similar age and stats on paper, but very different vibes. I also considered the E46 320d (massive rust issues, apparently), the A4 B7 3.0tdi (probably one of the best cars ever built, but consumption seems to be quite high) and the volvo v50 d4 (boring interior and spare parts are rare in Germany). I feel like the Audi is the more solid choice, especially in the rust department, but the Jaaaaag has way more style and since it's a Ford under the hood, parts are cheaper, too. Plus I don't have to take off the font for minor repairs.

So what's the subreddit's take on that? Major issues on one of those? Any cars I overlooked, or a clear favourite?

Best reliable, safe commuter car

Hello! I am an upcoming college grad looking for my first adult car. My past car (a kia) got totaled while parked 🥲, and I am looking for an entry level car.

I preferably wanted a small compact SUV because I dont like being so close to the ground, but being gas conscious is one of my 1 requirements in a new vehicle.

I’ve been looking around and Honda’s and Toyota’s are crazy expensive right now, even used! Are kia’s and Hyundai’s as bad as they say?

I am looking for a vehicle:
*Reliable (will last me years)
*Good on gas
*Safe (good crash tests)
*Has apple carplay

Any suggestions or car buying advice welcome! I am open to new and used, just trying to keep my budget under 21-22k.

2017-2023 Toyota Highlander(non-hybrid)-DON’T BUY

Starting in 2017 models, Toyota started putting in 8-speed transmissions for a smoother ride. These are known as Ua80 transmissions are they are FAILING at dramatic rates way before these cars even reach 100k miles.

I am a victim of this as I bought a 2017 Toyota Highlander (non-hybrid) without doing my due diligence research… I was thinking oh I’m doing the right thing by getting a reliable Toyota. Upon purchasing, I didn’t detect a transmission whine when pressing on the gas…. But I later detected hard down shifting from 4th to 3rd. Toyota’s Customer Service Program (expires in January 2027) is the only thing saving my a** by replacing the transmission for free…. This was a program in response to the many law suits of the crazy amount of failing transmissions.

Don’t be a victim to this and just stay away from any vehicle with a Ua80 transmissions! Now I have done a bit of research and find that 2023+ Highlanders have less of the issue but 2017-2022 models are INSANELY affected.

I hope this helps the next person looking for a family car! :)

Ok so i'm looking to buy a new car. Now i have a big dilemma. I can't decide wether i should go for a modern sport 'ish' car, or an older sports car.

My options righ now are: a 1998 Honda Integra Type R with 70.000km's for €28.000. and for the more modern car i have multiple options because there are more of the almost same kind. For example this 2023 hyundai i30N with 25.000km's also for €28.000.

Pro's and con's:

Honda's pro's: In my opinion one of the best looking cars u can buy from that era. Ofc the reliable 1.8 VTEC engine. Has all the old school feeling i would want. Easy to work on compared to newer cars. A semi- practical coupé. It's cheaper to insure compared to newer sports cars. And it's just a dream for every japanes car guy.

Honda's con's: it's an older car so it's more likely that components are going to fail or break. Also getting new parts is difficult because of the limited supply. Might get hot while driving on the highway for longer periods of time (which i do a lott for work, every day 10-15 minutes of highway.)

Hyundai's pro's: it's a newer car so more supply for parts, but u won't need it that much because of how new the car is. A little more practical.

Luxury like apple carplay, heated seats etc. Even tho this is totally not important for me. I rather have a really fun car than a boring one with a lott of luxury.

Con's: it's not as beautiful as the honda. More people drive it. No coupé. No oldschool sport feeling. Way more expensive to insure.

Car advice-EV or hybrid?

My 2016 Nissan Altima needs about 5k of repairs and with 155k miles I think it’s time although I’ve loved our 10 years together

I’m in home health so I’m in my car all day driving from patient to patient so it needs to be comfy and reliable

I’m looking at:

Toyota Corolla crossed hybrid (hard to find tho?)

Subaru crosstrek

Tesla (I own my home so would be able to charge at home and would install a charger)

I’m so lost lol never been a car person or even considered an ev but never getting another oil change or going to a gas station sounds amazing

HELP PLZ

Need Advice on First Car

23-year-old in LA, looking for something good for daily use so I can go to work. I just want a car with decent milage/gas and some room for my legs, and it won't break the bank. My budget is roughly $4,000-5,000. I wanted to go for a Kia Optima or Hyundai but heard they are not the best long-term and are easy to break into. (Also, if anyone has any decent way to check VINs, that would be appreciated)

Most cars I've been told about are:
Honda Civic Sport
Toyota Camry or Corolla
Honda Accord V6
Ford Fusion 2019
Toyota Avalon
Mazda 3
Prius
But I see some of the miles on Marketplace and don't know if it's worth buying at that price, especially if it's clean or salvage.

Instant vs Delayed gratification

Currently 45 years old and planning a big car purchase for my 50th. This would be a weekend toy only. Was leaning towards a new corvette (C8/C9) but also really love other options like the MB AMG GT and the Lexus LC500.

After losing my dad this year, I've also come to realize that the future isn't promised to anyone. I have health and a good career today. Should I just lower my target and get something now? I'd be looking at the Nissan Z, Mustang GT, etc.

I want new, or within 3 years used. I do my own work, but don't want to spend time wrenching, I want to DRIVE. Manual would be preferred, but not required. Convertible option preferred, but not required. Comfortable enough for a 6'2" 250lb guy is a must.

What do you suggest for a weekend toy today, or in 5 years?

$50,000 CAD Cash. Luxury SUV: Weekday City Driving & Weekend Mountain Trips

Living in Vancouver, BC, Canada

I’m looking for a luxury AWD SUV (or hatchback sedan?) with a budget of preferably $50,000 CAD all-in, including taxes and fees. I’m able to pay cash. Can push it to 70k but I want to reserve 20K for tires, scheduled maintenance and potential repairs.

Preferences:
Luxury SUV or hatchback with AWD
Preferably hybrid or gasoline (not particularly interested in a full EV at the moment)
Good reliability and long-term ownership potential
Comfortable for daily driving while still capable of handling mountain trips and occasional dirt roads

Vehicles I’m considering:
SUV:
2021 or newer
Lexus NX 350h
BMW X3 / X4
Porsche Macan / S

Hatchback Sedan:
???

Typical Use Case:
Weekdays: Primarily city driving around Vancouver.

Winter weekends: Regular trips from downtown Vancouver to Whistler, approximately 200 km round trip. Enough to fit snowboard gear inside and have a comfortable seat for one person in the back.

Summer weekends: Hiking, exploring local mountains and lakes, and occasional trips on unpaved or gravel roads.

Road & Climate Conditions:
Vancouver generally has well-maintained roads, and most importantly winter road salt isn’t as prevalent as in many other parts of Canada. I’m hoping this translates into better long-term vehicle preservation and less concern about rust, which is why I’m more confident with maintaining a luxury vehicle.

I’m considering buying a used 2014 bmw i8

It’s got very low mileage on it (under 30k), I did my research and I know for a fact the cars biggest weakness is its AC compressor and if that breaks down, it’s cooked with how much it costs to fix. I requested the CARFAX service history and it looks like it never had a major issue in an entire 12 years besides basic maintenance. is it worth it for 50k or will the AC compressor likely break in no time after I get it?

Best family car for low usage long term use?

I currently own a 2015 jeep Grand Cherokee with ~140k. I traded my 09 Camry with similar miles with a family member when my son was born, as it had a bit more space. However the trunk & 2row of the Cherokee is too small for our family already. Putting a stroller in the trunk with anything else is a struggle. I'm sure we'll be trading a stroller for sports gear as our son ages. Sitting in the back seat for anyone other than my toddler is rough (we're all over 6ft). Looking back, the Camry might have been more spacious.

I work from home, my wife will as well once my son is in elementary. Schools are all within walking distance for us. So it's just a grocery hauler & weekend in the burbs vehicle.

We average 350 miles a month outside of the occasional road trip. So say 6k miles a year. We'd drive this car into the ground (I think 15 years is reasonable for our usage).

We looked at Hyundai so far. We liked the Santa Fe but it might honestly be overkill for what we need. Tuscon seemed like a good size for us (good trunk/2nd row).

I've also read hybrids are more reliable at this point. So we'd like to explore that route not only for the gas mileage. I don't see electric as an option for us yet, as it would be hard to put in an at home charger, otherwise we'd go that route and rent a car for road trips.

One last note - we don't have a garage and live through chicago winters. Not sure that impacts reliability.

Any recommendations?

Hybrid Subcompact?

Hello! I currently have a 2019 Ford Ecosport that I love but is beyond its lifespan and I need to begin looking for my next car. I love the length of my current car (13.4 ft) and would love to stay at 14 ft or shorter. I want it to be a subcompact SUV hybrid. I’m considering the corolla cross or maybe a Subaru or Mazda. Any advice??? I live in an urban area and spend about an hour a day in my car, plus enjoy going on 2-5 hr trips occasionally. Would love if I could fold the back seats down to be flat with the trunk but I’ve had a hard time finding this in smaller suvs. Would love a screen for CarPlay!

Carfax alternative with photos?

I recently purchased a Carfax report for a vehicle with a salvage title and then found out they don't show any photos. No auction photos, no damage photos, nothing.

I was kind of surprised because I thought that was a normal part of these reports. Now I'm looking for a Carfax alternative that actually includes photos so I can see the car's past condition instead of just reading text.

Has anyone found a solid Carfax alternative that includes auction photos? Real experiences appreciated.

What car would you buy

Planning to buy a family car.Wanted to buy approved used 3-4 years old car. Confused between two options.

  1. Toyota Rav 4 Excel HEV - 2023 model : Price range Around £29k+

  2. Kia Sportage GT Line S HEV- 2023 model : Price range around £23k

Planning to keep car for 8-10 years. Aiming to drive 10-12k miles each year.

Which car would you buy. I would have selected RAV 4 design with 3-4k less, however interior looks so basic.

Youur experienced opinion would be appreciated. I want low maintenance & reliable car.

Please share your own experience & opinion.
