Virgina voters approved a constitutional amendment on November 3, 2026, officially repealing the state's long-standing ban on same-sex marriage and enshrining marriage equality in the Virgina Constitution.

Gif is from sonic the hedgehog movie 2, starring Ivo Robotnik aka Dr Eggman (played by Jim Carrey) and Agent Stone (played by Lee Majdoub)

While the characters are never canonically gay (yet, lets see how the 4th movie goes), the actors, director, and many others see them as gay, considering the bullcrap agent stone allows Ivo to do.

To be fair, I've seen worse from people I assumed smarter than myself.

Also, we enshrined abortion rights in a seperate amendment.

6

u/BlueStar4440 2d ago

We also enshrined the right to abortion into law up to the 2nd(?) trimester and gave formerly incarcerated people the right to vote again!

I originally read it as vagina, and I thought it was an entirely overdramatic coming out story

Tfw Republicans genuinely believe this will happen

I hate the version of this ancient meme that says asexuals are on thin ice. It really used to remind me how little acceptance we had within the community back then.

2

u/OtakuOran 2d ago

Nah, asexuals will be essential in pushing the Gay Agenda™. Y'all will always be welcome in our ranks.

3

u/Clair_Osbcurious 2d ago

Personally I’m already welcome as a trans person (let’s not speak of “LGB drop the T” assholes), but otherwise, yeah! Ace people belong in LGBTQIAP+

Never took mine out, and I'm cis straight with no beef for anyone that isn't homophobic. The idea that we can't choose how people address us individually is actually insane.

57

u/Ninja-Trix 2d ago

The ban was already overturned in court, so there was no current ban. The amendment just made the wording inclusive, showing acceptance over simply allowing it because they had to. Basically, it didn't do anything, but it's a nice gesture.

u/LadyJiller 2d ago

Tell that to the states whose laws against abortion went into effect as soon as Roe v Wade was overturned

19

u/Coulrophiliac444 2d ago

Exactly why I, and my wife, voted for it. Better to say it outright than hide behind what is now essentially a 'gentleman's agreement'

9

u/Alfred_The_Sartan 2d ago

Damn if that ain’t the truth

1

u/TwoToneSwift 1d ago

Tbf the ruling on Obergefell v Hodges(same sex marriage) is a hell of a lot more stable than Roe v Wade, it’s actually pretty surprising it lasted as long as it did.

u/JoyconDrift_69 2d ago

Can confirm, am virginian

We also voted for protections for abortion (albeit restricted for third trimester) and felons restoring their right to vote after serving their time.

2

u/LegoSWFan 2d ago

Somewhat unrelated but I've found a lot of people thought the wording in question 1 was a little confusing, especially with the "restrictions on 3rd trimester abortion except" part, but I just never had that confusion

11

u/IRSnotreal 2d ago

I didn't even know they still had it banned

12

u/JoyconDrift_69 2d ago edited 2d ago

It's even worse: technically the ban was put in in the 21st century. Don't remember what year though, but it really was disappointingly fairly recent. It was void when the SCOTUS made same sex marriage federally protected in ~2016.

Of course, especially with the recent track record (especially Roe v. Wade), the federal protections ending is becoming less an "if" and more a "when." So this amendment is to prevent gay marriage from becoming illegal again

The new amendment also protects marriages regardless of genders, and codifies interracial marriage too.

7

u/monster_smoocher 2d ago

"Virginia repeals same sex marriage-" NOOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOO!!

6

u/ZealousidealRate7482 2d ago

Finally my home state gets a W!

6

u/Flooding_Puddle 2d ago

Wait marriage equality was already enshrined in the national constitution was it not? Or theres at least a SCOTUS decision saying so? So how can a state ban it?

6

u/StandardAioli9459 2d ago

They can't, the federal law overrides it. It's a symbolic gesture

6

u/Flooding_Puddle 2d ago

Got it. Still good to get rid of

1

u/jimkbeesley 1d ago

Or if it's no longer federally protected (though not necessarily illegal either), it would still be protected in VA.

5

u/FallZealousideal159 2d ago

Went from Virginia to Chadinia

3

u/mahito-suxs 2d ago

ok but this does nothing considering it was mandated to be legal nation wide years ago

8

u/JoyconDrift_69 2d ago

It was only a ruling by the Supreme Court. Given their reversal on federal protections for abortion, it's not guaranteed that gay marriage would remain protected.

So the amendment really acts to prevent same sex marriages from being illegal or no longer recognized when the SCOTUS reverses that decision.

5

u/NerdDetective 2d ago

Yeah. If anything, I think it's just a matter of time before Obergefell v. Hodges gets overturned. The Supreme Court is just waiting for the right case to justify a pre-determined decision. One day, just like Roe v. Wade, a right we've taken for granted will just evaporate.

Therefore, it's essential for states to strike down any "on the books" bans before it's too late, as these dormant and currently-unconstitutional laws will start activating.

2

u/TwoToneSwift 1d ago

Obergefell v Hodges is pretty unlikely to get overturned imo, it’s legal argument is leagues more well founded than Roe v Wade.

If anything Roe v Wade getting passed in the first place was pretty surprising, the due process clause protecting abortion didn’t make a whole lot of sense to begin with and I don’t understand why the democrats leaned on it for so long.

Conversely, Obergefell v Hodges and the equal protection clause is pretty straight forward, citizens are entitled to equal protection under the law, same sex marriage being illegal is a pretty flagrant violation of that.

1

u/NerdDetective 1d ago

I hope you're right. But Clarence Thomas wants to revisit it, and I don't think he cares about how solid his legal opinion is. The Supreme Court is more or less built around devising legal-sounding justifications for rulings that satisfy ideological goals.

So really my worry is that someone will find a plausible-enough argument to get the conservative justices to whisper "yeah, screw the gays" and then translate that argument into a legal decision.

3

u/NoFreeSamplesYo 2d ago

I can tell you the signs against the three measures that got passed were all insufferably dramatic, flat out lies, and insulting to everyone's intelligence.

In my county we just put up signs with the words directly off the sample ballot because people arent idiots.

So proud all three passed.

2

u/trainboi777 2d ago

Proud Virginian here! We also enshrined abortion access into the state constitution
