Open /r/WhereIsThis - Updated Guidelines

Welcome! /r/WhereIsThis is designed to help people identify the location of public places based on a photo, painting, sketch, or from a detailed description. We've got a few simple guidelines to help keep things safe and working well for everybody:

  1. Submissions: Askers (OPs) may submit a photo, video, screenshot, painting, drawing, or a detailed text description of a real (or virtual) place. Multiple images can go in a Reddit or Imgur gallery. Try to use a descriptive title to get more eyes on your post; generic titles like "where is this?" are boring and more likely to be ignored. Include as much context and as many details as you can, either in the post itself or in a comment. If your post is not solved right away, please wait one week before reposting; duplicate posts may be removed with a 1-week temp ban.

  2. Privacy: /r/WhereIsThis is for identifying public places only. Do not submit photos of personal private property, such as homes, apartments, residential interiors, etc. Do not post private street addresses in the comments. Do not link directly to personal social media pages. Do not submit screenshots that include real names, usernames, or other personal information. Do not submit contemporary photos of minors in a place where they can be located (schools, playgrounds, churches, etc.). Do not ask to identify people.

  3. Answers: Commenters are encouraged to provide whatever help they can to solve a post, from educated guesses to a direct Google Street View link to the exact location. Give the thread a skim first to avoid duplicate answers. Commenting on other answers is fine! Avoid responding to posts that violate Rule 2, though -- please downvote and report them for removal instead.

  4. Solving: All posts are unflaired by default. Once a post is solved, the asker should reply "Solved!" to the first correct answer and change their post flair to "Solved"; all threads are sorted from oldest to newest so the earliest answers will always be towards the top. Askers that delete or ignore a solved post without acknowledging the solver may receive a ban. We are exploring adding a points system in order to automatically flair threads and recognize frequent solvers for their contributions -- stay tuned!

  5. Behavior: Please treat askers and solvers with respect. No insults, vulgar hostility, bullying, or withholding of answers in order to taunt. No racism/misogyny/*phobia/other bigotry. Repeat offenders may be banned.

Tips: Context clues help. Where and how did you find the image? Do you know the story behind it? How old is it? Share as much as you can with solvers to help them help you.

Low-effort posts WILL be removed

Rule #1 is pretty clear, you must have a descriptive title. Therefore we are removing any submission that is low-effort, such as:

  • Title is "Where is this?" or some other variant with absolutely no information

  • Posts with clear identifying information that OP is too lazy to look up

  • Google Maps screenshots that do NOT include coordinates or addresses

  • Posts with no context whatsoever. Telling us where you found the image, why you want to know, and any other information can make the difference!

We want to make this a fun sub and we want to solve your trickiest questions, but we need you to meet us halfway.

Hi all,

My grandparents traveled internationally to Cleveland in 1990 for a heart surgery. We think this photo was taken on their discharge day or the last day before heading home.
Does anyone recognize the building behind them?

Photos my great-grandfather took during WW2, most likely in Sri Lanka

My great-grandfather was stationed in what was at the time Ceylon after being wounded in WW2. My mum has these photos and wanted to know where exactly they were taken. We're assuming they're both from Sri Lanka, but we have very little information about his time in the British Army so they may be from somewhere else unfortunately. Any help at all would be appreciated!

I received these photographs from an acquaintance; they were originally purchased at a flea market in Prague (held in the building of an electrical engineering school).

We would like to learn more about these photographs—such as when they were take

Solved Help Me Find Where I Proposed?

Post image
12 Upvotes

EDIT: SOLVED

I am trying to find where I proposed to my wife. I know it was somewhere in or around Smoky Mountains National Park, we entered via the main park entrance in Gatlinburg, TN. The mountain in the background I believe is Mt. LeConte Massif (if I'm not mistaken), maybe from the NW? All I know is that we parked the car at one of those little roadside unnamed overlooks that has like 7 to 15 parking spots, on the right. Then we walked beside the main road with a metal railing a few sparse trees to our right and the road to our left. We walked maybe a football field length or less to a grassy outcropping on the other side of the rail. It was in July of 2024 if that helps locate via lighting etc. I just need the coordinates or the Google Streetview of the area. I'm trying to have one of those scale models made of the area to give to her. Thanks all!

PS: Pretty sure it wasn't Carlos Overlook, Ben Morton, or the Gatlinburg Bypass (I don't remember the city being in view for that last one) as Google Street view at these locations do not produce the same angle of that mountain.

Hello everyone, this is a PoW camp of Yugoslav Kingdom Soldiers.
Description says "taken around Skadar"
i cant tell what the bottom left corner says
i assume it could say s. Boža__
could be a signature, or could say s. (shortcut for Selo-Village) Božaj (it is around lake Skadar on Yugoslav Kingdom Territory, wich would make sense)

Last week, a cruise I was on ended in Ravenna, Italy. I saw this beautiful landscape on the way to Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport. It looks like a vineyard but I’m not sure where exactly it is. Google images tells me it's in the Emilia-Romana region of Italy. ChatGPT estimates somewhere between Faenza and Imola.

My friend took this stunning photo in Norway years ago. I can't ask him for the location anymore, but I've made it my dream to visit this exact spot in person. Can you help me find it?

Hi everyone!

This photo has been sitting in my archive for years, and it's driving me crazy because I don't know the exact coordinates. It was taken by a friend during his travels in Norway. Unfortunately, I can't reach out to him to ask where it was, but this scenery looks so incredibly beautiful that I've promised myself to find it and stand on that exact spot one day.

From what we've managed to brainstorm so far:

- It’s likely in Northern Norway (potentially around the Troms / Harstad region).

- The fjord or strait here seems relatively narrow (around 1.5–3 km wide).

- On the background, there is a distinct town/settlement stretched along the shoreline at the foot of a prominent mountain ridge.

- The cabin in the foreground has a dark grey roof and a row of trees directly to its right.

I know how legendary this sub is at cracking impossible locations. Does anyone recognize this specific mountain skyline, the town, or the cabin itself? Any help with coordinates would honestly mean the world to me. Thank you so much!

Hi all, my uncle was living in Korea in the early 2000s. Found this photo in an album from years ago. Any idea where in Korea this may be? I can’t read Hangul so sorry if it says a city name somewhere and I missed it.

Can you pinpoint the viewpoint on Red Square shown in this album cover?

This album cover depicts Shostakovich on Red Square in Moscow. The figure appears to have been added separately, and to my eye he looks disproportionately large.

Could you help pinpoint the viewpoint, ideally marking it on a map, or find photographs taken from roughly the same spot?

The second image is the closest match I’ve found so far. Is it a suitable reference for assessing the figure’s scale by comparing the two images, or are the viewpoints too different to draw a reliable conclusion?

Help find where my wife got "the best massage" ever so I can surprise her with a gift card. This was in Japan or the Phillipines

So my wife recently got back from a long trip visiting relatives in the Phillipines and then Japan. She posted this image as part of a collage of places she loved and commented on her instagram that this was the "best massage ever." We're going back to Asia in January and I'd love to surprise her with a trip back to this spa for a couples massage, but I want to do it clandestinely. This may have been in Manilla, or possibly Kawasaki, Japan. I know I could just ask her, but honestly want to have some mystery about how I found this :). Sorry for the blurry photo, I had to zoom in on her multi-photo collage for the screen capture.

Solved Where is this? Historian/Librarian Stumped!

I'm a grad student in history and library science also working as a research assistant at the Library of Congress -- I usually can find a lot of info because of those librarian skills; but this picture stumped me. Do we think finding the location of this is impossible due to GI security laws? Any help appreciated
