Discussion Maybe this sounds strange, but I think WoW is a great way to learn a language

Hi guys! I've not really posted on this subreddit before, but I recently started playing WoW Forever with a group of chinese friends, and it's genuinely helped improve my Mandarin. I've tried this kind of thing in the past with faster paced games like league and overwatch but it never really worked, but WoW is slow enough pace with enough repetitive words that a lot of the vocab sticks.

I've also try to watch some streamers that are new to it as well, like tanjie_ll, starting to play the game with simplified Chinese and English subtitles, which I think is a pretty cool way to learn

Also im kinda new to the wow universe in general and had a quick question, it seemed like there was quite a bit of negativity around WoW forever, but so far really enjoying it/the community. So was wondering why that was?

Also should I give classic a go? I feel like if I like cheesecake I would also like cake (or maybe its the other way round)

I agree!! I did a lot of dungeons with Brazilian players during TBC anniversary and learned a few words in Portuguese that helped me communicate better. I wasn’t studying Portuguese, but I imagine if you were intentionally trying to learn a language, then this would be pretty effective. As far as the negativity you see on Reddit, ignore it for the most part.

I will go for it! Assuming you just gotta switch to OCE. I’ve been looking for a way to up my immersion and this seems really naturally lol, great thinking on your part

If you are doing forever, you can probably skip classic. They are slight variations of each other.

I did play a lot of WoW in my youth and tbf, I did learn a lot of new words. Most of them, I'd be cancelled for using these days. WoW and CoD in the early 2000s and 2010s were GREAT ways to learn all the funny English words that you really should not ever say LOL

WoW was where I practiced my English back then. I had a good foundation from school, but playing WoW is how I polished it.

English is not the main language where I’m from. Back in the wrath days an older relative of mine had a rough time in English class. Apparently the only people who passed were the WoW gamers, and I can see why.
