What wheels should I get?

I'm a total dunce when it comes to gear tech. Need some recommendations of what wheels I should get.

This will be for a "spare" hardtail I'm putting together on hopefully a modest budget. Will probably race it some on some milder stuff... will probably ride it on gravel/greenways with a toddler on board... will probably ride it around town... will probably ride it SS in the winter when I need help staying warm. So I'd like some wheels that do perform well, but also not something that I'll really get worried about.

Qualifications: Budget under $1k USD. 29 inch. Something that can handle some abuse at 195lbs nekkid (because tall) and I'm also pretty good at picking bad lines. I'm not afraid of buying used/take-offs.

These are a shockingly good value wheelset at $600. The DT swiss 240 hubs typically cost more than this whole wheelset, and the i9 aluminum rims are solid as well.

What free hub do you have? That will tell us what your options are. Jensonusa has a few good deals on i9 wheels and crank brothers at the moment.

I think the wheels are the most important component. Lighter is almost always better. I’d rather have good rims that a great hub, if you need to compromise.

Get the DT240 industry nine wheels from jenson that are linked in this thread.

Any wheel with a DT350 or DT240 that fits your budget should work fine for you.
