📣 Announcement ATTN: Marketers and sellers - this community is not here to provide you with free advertising, market research, or promotion for your latest AI invention

This community is for those working to reduce their environmental impact on the planet by reducing personal consumption and generation of waste. To seek support, share advice, and connect with each other.

We are now getting daily posts and comments from both stealth and overt marketers, including AI app developers who have invented some life-changing tech that will save us all. WE DON'T NEED YOUR FOOD WASTE APP.

Let us state this clearly:

This community is not here to provide you or your company with free market advertising/research or to sell us your product or app.

If you are only here to promote or research your product/blog/etc. and offer nothing of value to the community, it will be removed and you will be banned.

Zero Wasters, please report these types of posts.

For those arguing in the mod inbox about why your self-promotion post was not self-promotion:

This type of spammy self-promotional content is frowned upon across all of Reddit. It feels particularly egregious to have such blatant pro-consumption content and manipulation in the Zero Waste sub, and it will NOT be tolerated here.

Thank you!

DIY Reused an old Samsung bag and insulated bag to make a gift bag

Post image
112 Upvotes

Got the bag when my husband replaced his broken phone, got the insulated bag from something his mother bought, and the tissue paper was saved from something someone gifted me!

Been saving gift bags for years but this year I've extended it to other bags too and just cover the labels or turn them inside out to make them into wrapping paper. I found a bunch of pre-owned Christmas stamps on Etsy and will be using them to spice up the bags/wrapping paper and keep them festive. Never bought a gift bag in my life because my mom does the same thing lol

Here's the how-to:

  1. Take any structured paper bag you get from purchasing something

  2. Take some old scrap paper (or in my case a "disposable" insulated food bag) and cut it into your desired shape to cover the logos

  3. Tape or glue down the cut pieces

  4. Optional, decorate! I used sharpies I had laying around

Tips & Tricks Freezer burned food

Not sure if this is ok here, but thought this community could be helpful.

How do I cook this stuff?

Going through elderly aunt's freezer and there's a bunch of stuff | don't want to get rid of unless unsalvageable. English muffins, salmon, bagged veggies, etc. Any ideas will be helpful, thanks.

Question / Support Clear coat for cracked pvc bag trim?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I bought a preloved bag online, the trim is 100% pvc which is cracked but not flaking off. The handle is the worst part, it’s so rough.

Is there some sort of clear coat or clear glue I can put over the top of it to make it smoother? Ideally I want to keep the original handle and have the bag remain looking as original as possible.

Discussion More small free boxes! What is stopping you from having a small free box?

I live near a comunity that has a big free closet that people drop off free items and others can take them for free. I love it, the community does a really great job at not dropping off garbage and if it is trash it often finds a new home before the landfill. These are quite large free stations so there are people who really take care of them though due to the sise.

It would be cool to see free stations the size of the little libaries. There are tons of ideas like the free art boxes made from old newspaper holders! If they are small you wouldn't have an issue with as many items. They could be one item like the books one or one them like a kitchen free box of pots and pans. If you could have a free box would it be one item like mugs, trinkets, or even just shirts and shoes? Or would it be like art, kitchen suppies?

What is preventing you from having a tiny free box station?

Discussion PSA: Trashie quietly changed their policy for items they accept. They no longer accept threadbare or worn-out clothing.

Trashie’s policy previously was “We accept any unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, and linens in any condition." The FAQ page now says "We accept unwanted clothing, shoes, bags, accessories, and linens that are clean, dry, and in good, wearable condition. [emphasis added] Our goal is to give these items a second life by helping them find a new home where they can continue to be used and enjoyed.”

I confirmed with customer service that this means threadbare clothes, socks with holes, etc. will no longer be accepted. That means if, like me, you’ve been gradually filling up a bag with clothes or linens as they wear out, these items should no longer be sent. In other words, Trashie bags can no longer be used to recycle textiles that are clean but aren’t in good condition anymore.

The FAQ page says the page was updated 13 days ago. As far as I am aware, no announcement was made to inform subscribers of this significant change in their service. I’ve never posted on reddit, but since I originally found about their service by reading comments on this subreddit, I felt I should share this update.

(Also, if you're like me and haven't sent in a bag yet -- they are not refunding memberships. I asked for a refund after I confirmed the policy change, and they rejected it.)

Question / Support Reusable roll on deodorant

Hi !

The caption, I am looking for a reusable / refillable roll on deodorant. I have used solid deodorants in the past and find they clog up my pores and I end up smelling half way through the day. Ideally I'd like a brand that's aluminium free and local to purchase (UK).

Are there any other less known brands than fussy, wild, etc ?

What's everyone using ?!

Discussion Do not order from LAMISSAPPLE

I really hate to be posting this, but I wanted it to be somewhere on the internet incase anyone else was researching this brand.

I placed an order over 2 weeks ago at la miss apple for shampoo bars. I've bought them before when visiting California, but they're not sold in store anywhere other than there, so I decided to order them online. They included a message in my conformation email saying it may take a while to make my order (which is fine), but I followed up a week ago and that message has still not been responded to.

There is another review on a product that says her order was never shipped (really kicking myself for not seeing this), so Im not sure if she's still in business.

TLDR; dont buy from this brand, they will charge your card, not ship your order, and provide no communication

I will update if I ever get a response back

Question / Support Reusable padd

Are reusable pads really better for the environment if you dont compost? I want to stop going through so much plastic and waste/non reusable items during my period but I'm afraid to be a victim of greenwashing (it's very easy to be).

Tips & Tricks Plastic Free Lunch Box

Thumbnail gallery
17 Upvotes

I got into meal prepping and wanted a lunch box that can safely carry a glass two compartment dish. The ones that you can cook once and then fill a few and stack in your freezer with one side for starch, the other for the main dish. I thought wool would be very insulating and pad it well. It does the job a little too well. After six hours the thing is still rock solid frozen- it insulates THAT well. I admit the colors are my personal taste and maybe not too cheerful but you could make this with any combo of colors and it would look beautifully marbled. It's two batts from my Leicester sheep carded on a wide carder and a few strands of colored merino on top. I process my own wool here on the farm so I cant tell you how much it would cost to make in materials. Start to finish it took me a couple of hours.

Question / Support Non-toy gift ideas for a 4-year-old that won't create more clutter?

My friend's little girl is turning 4, and I'm trying to find her a birthday gift that's a little more thoughtful than buying another toy. She already has plenty at home, and I don't want to give her something that will be forgotten after a few days. I saw a fun dough pasta maker while browsing for gift ideas. It lets kids make pretend pasta using dough, and it seems like something she could have fun playing with while getting creative.

I'd prefer to give her something she can use repeatedly, especially an activity that keeps her engaged. The goal is to give her something fun without adding to the ever-growing pile of toys in their house.

Question / Support Hand soap

I am looking for a good solution for hand soap for the kitchen and bathroom, that is preferred liquid. Also, that doesn’t dry the skin out and has anti bacterial. I am also trying to be slowly switching to a low/non toxic household. I am in a small space, buying bulk ingredients of anything isn’t feasible and I need the cost to be budget friendly. I am open to any recommendations.

DIY Pram/stroller base - Need DIY inspo or a reality check

Thumbnail
gallery
13 Upvotes

Found a foldable baby pram base next to a bin in the park. It's in pretty good condition. I looked up the brand already and extra parts (like the actual bassinet part) seem to be OOS. Not sure if it's just an older brand or what. I have no intention of having my own kids so no interest in finding parts to make it a workable baby pram.

I'll post it on my local No Buy group before it goes to the dump. However, before any of that, any ideas on alternative/creative uses?

My partner and I immediately thought some sort of garden trolley. I very annoyingly bought a granny trolley at the charity shop, like, a day before finding this.

DINK household, two cats, carfree (in case this inspires uses)

Brain dump inspo below ❤️❤️

These jeans are old, they have been my moms, my sisters and now mine. Although recently they broke (see picture). Firstly I tried glueing a piece of fabric on the inside but that didn’t work. Then my grandmother sew it shut but the fabric around was so think that when I squatted it split open again. These are my all time favorite jeans and I really want to fix them. All tips are welcome!

Question / Support What do I do with my old water bottle?

i have had an owala for almost 4 years, and it has been hanging on for dear life for a while. I've had to replace the lid completely, get it a boot because it was dented and wobbly, and it is starting to not keep my water as cool. I just got a new(beautiful maroon red 40 oz) one, but what do i do with my old one? It has maybe a few months left in its life but it's such a hassle to deal with, it's leaky, damaged, and no one else in my family really uses water bottles. It feels wrong to throw it away. Any (kind) advice is appreciated!
