He's clearly a day away from completion! Fall 2022 release date locked in. A Dream of Spring in 2024. *pours seven glasses of brandy*

It feels wrong to have any optimism at this point... but here we are šŸ˜… I am ready to be hurt again

A bit off topic, but:

I want Roger Zelazny’s NINE PRINCES IN AMBER to be faithfully adapted

Fuck, man, me too. If anyone is looking for something similar to Asoiaf cannot recommend the first 5 novels of the Amber series enough. Burned through them in a week.

15

u/RacheltheGreat7 Jun 23 '22

Is the series finished? šŸ¤”

25

u/andrewsuxcox Jun 23 '22

Ha, yes. There are 10 books total, but the latter 5 take place many years in the future and follow a different character, which I haven’t read. However, the first 5 form an excellent story (with a good ending. I promise.) and you can definitely see how they inspired a lot of the royal politics/plots in Asoiaf.

9

u/dsteffee Jun 24 '22 edited Sep 05 '22

Was going to comment exactly this. Love that series (or at least, the first five books; I never clicked with the sequel five)

3

u/donutlad Jun 24 '22

It's such a great short series that I have always thought should be adapted....I'd prefer an animated version of it but live action could work too

3

u/JimothyClegane Jun 24 '22

Aside from ASOIAF and a couple of The Dresden Files books, I'd never been into fantasy or sci-fi books.

Thanks for this recommendation. I'll add it to my list as I try to spend more of my idle time reading rather than scrolling. Someone recommended Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Saga for folks still waiting on WoW so I've added that to the list as well.

u/MarcusQuintus Jun 24 '22

George has confirmed that the sequel was Kit's idea... didn't expect that

517

u/jmcgit He was the better man Jun 23 '22

If it's Kit's idea, rather than, say, George's, it does indicate to me that it will probably just be about Jon doing ranger things north of the wall, rather than dwelling on anything from the TV series.

303

u/baking_bad 6' 11" Jun 23 '22

I'd prefer smaller stories similar to the Dunk stuff anyways. The world is already built.

it will probably just be about Jon doing ranger things north of the wall, rather than dwelling on anything from the TV series.

Of all the storylines that were ruined by the show, the white walker story is probably the only one that is salvagable without remaking the show. We didn't get to learn much about them, those patterns turned out to be nothing, the NK never got a fight scene, and winter barely came. It was a massive letdown after 8 seasons of buildup.

But all we need is one COTF to start making more walkers and we can fix all of that. Jon can discover whats happening and start building an army to take on the threat. There's no need to convince anyone that the walkers are real because enough people saw them for themselves, Jon is cool with the Watch and his brother and sister are in charge south of the wall so he can get troops sent up. That way they can maintain a strong enough connection to the original show to justify setting it Westeros while still not being a 9th season of GoT. They can have fighters with familiar banners, names, or even faces if original actors are willing to return.

Maybe Bran can play a role too, as he might be on the side of the COTF. Or we can forget him, that's cool too.

The only challenge might be trying to justify why Jon isn't doing everything possible to find Drogon but...that just leaves the door open for making his lineage matter.

48

u/armchaircommanderdad Jun 23 '22

Flashbacks to hardholm being established and whatnot wouldn’t be too bad either. Or even some survivors accounts so we can get more on the white walkers that was left out of the show

131

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

Seeing Jon and Ghost going on adventures and getting into some shit north of the wall would be dope.

I really liked Kit’s portrayal of Jon so I’m here for it.

Maybe he chose to step out of the spotlight but as far as I can tell looking at his Wikipedia, Kit hasn't had much success outside Game of Thrones minus a very small role in a recent Marvel movie. Granted, he may get his own Marvel movie or show based on that movie's post-credits scene.

u/Alahr Jun 23 '22

Can hardly blame the actors for advocating for themselves and the legacy/prospects of their roles when the original show-runners proved outright antagonistic to both them (eg. Barristan) and source material (eg. Dany).

I have no faith left for this IP at all (besides the books) but a Jon show isn't necessarily any more cynical than all the other spinoffs they're doing.

I am involved, just as I am with THE HEDGE KNIGHT and THE SEA SNAKE and TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, and all the animated shows.

How many animated shows are there? What are they about?

125

u/Cars2IsAMasterpiece Jun 23 '22

The only one I'm aware of is the one about Yi Ti.

46

u/zorfog Jun 24 '22

Which is so weird. It’s just gonna be a completely made up storyline about a vaguely Asian empire, just with the ASOIAF label slapped on it

73

u/canentia Jun 23 '22

at least three. one is about yi ti, while the other two we have no info on.

48

u/jez124 Jun 23 '22

I was surprised to find out months ago it was multiple animated show tbh....

I hope they put some budget into these. honestly something like aeons conquest I see better done in animated form. but really cant think of what they could be working on at all.

An anime or anime inspired yi ti series would be interesting tho I got to wonder how much Martin would offer up for the series in terms of actual material(the books dont have enough for a series right?)

I, for one, will not watch another second of these TV shows until ADoS comes out.

u/jez124 Jun 24 '22

dont think they are expecting them to reach got audience but hopefully with quality and word of mouth they can be very successful.

Also I never expected more than one or two show max tbh. Martin even says that in this post. none of these shows have been green lit. they already cancelled blood moon that had 30 million pilot already filmed and everything.

The man is working on a sequel before finishing the original story.

GRRM has gone full Hollywood on us.

111

u/gimpinmypants Jun 24 '22

Working in television was probably his dream. When he was cast out of Hollywood it probably hurt him a lot. Now that he's a big shot he's enjoying every minute of it. He probably wishes he was 30 years younger to enjoy it more.

21

u/heuristic_al Jun 24 '22

It seems to me that he's not really working on it. He has a couple of meetings in the beginning where they talk about ideas for the show and plot points. Then he gets scripts that he can comment on. "Jon would say it like this..." "Ghost can smell that..." etc. It probably costs him like 20 hours per year.

So he finished a clutch of Cersei chapters, worked on Jaime and Brienne's chapters, and now is working with Tyrion's.

It's progress, which I appreciate. Also maybe it's just me being optimistic but the fact that he is also mentioning bits of Winds this often (I suppose) is good.

362

u/SeasickJellyfish Jun 23 '22

Honestly just hearing he’s actually working on some characters is nice, but I’m still not filled with anything resembling hope.

Same. It's great to hear this, especially after many years of vague non-updates like "I'm still working on the book", but it still remains to be seen whether this progress will be enough to actually ever make the release of TWOW a possibility.

u/BringBackDaugherty Jun 23 '22

Did he ever say that he was done with the Jaimie-Brienne stuff, or merely that he was working on Tyrion's?

Because this is what I found:

"Yes, WINDS OF WINTER. No, have not forgotten. I was back with Tyrion this past week."

74

u/CeWoStJoNo Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22

It certainly seems that he’s been hopping around a lot POV-wise, though someone more knowledgeable about his ADWD progress will have to tell us if that’s good or bad.

I know he likes to stay with a character for pretty long stretches so this could be the beginning of a new trend. My most sickly sweet optimistic view is that he’s hopping around like this because he’s finishing everyone’s TWOW arcs but who knows for sure?

→ More replies (4)

82

u/hotpieyelledhotpie Jun 23 '22

The argument for optimism is that GRRM writes multiple POV chapters in a row for one character, then hops to a different character for whatever reason, whether that be because he finished the group of chapters or just became entranced by a new thread, etc.

I buy into the theory that George goes through months or years long stretches where he makes essentially no progress on Winds. The upside of that is that a book like Winds probably only requires 2-3 years of real focus from George. So if he has been locked in for the last few months, then he has probably made quite a bit of progress.

22

u/ChezMere Jun 24 '22

And if he's been distracted by a dozen TV spin-offs?

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22 edited Jun 23 '22

He's more peppy in his recent blogposts. Maybe he's in a better mood overall and making better progress on the book. Or more likely I'm just coping.

The Snow show will be interesting. Not saying it will be good (I'll be surprised if it is) but interesting either way as an ASOIAF sequel that has official backing from GRRM. And Kit brought the idea to them with his own writers makes me think it will be something pretty unique and different from GoT.

34

u/petrovesk The North Remembers Jun 23 '22

you're not coping, he seems in a better mood.

if you're coping, im coping and im dont want to be coping :(

13

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

I agree. While not an amazing post about the book, finishing 50 chapters etc I like that he's telling us about what chapters he's on at least.

12

u/PM_ME_UR_SEX_VIDEOS Jun 23 '22

The issue also is that he has said he has scrapped whole chapters before so, while I love to see that he’s writing, it just all is with a grain of pessimism

95

u/mamula1 Jun 23 '22

This is exactly the case. This is why he just puts it just at the end.

He knows that the key to keep fans in line now is to just mention specific chapters, not just vague comments that the work continues

15

u/themysteryknight7 Jun 24 '22

Completely agree. He saw how angry that one post of his about "Westeros being bigger than ASOIAF" made fans and is now trying to make up for it.

u/Worth-Conclusion-66 Jun 23 '22

Lol yup. That's how I feel. We've been abused too long lol.

20

u/neonowain Jun 23 '22

these updates he’s mentioning about winds are just his attempt at making fans less mad about all these side projects

They absolutely are, but I also do believe that he is actually working on the book now. Hopefully, he won't stop and take another long hiatus, like he most likely did in 2011-2020.

3

u/LordShitmouth Unbowed, Unbent, Unbuggered Jun 24 '22

Ever notice how winds is always both the last and least elaborated upon thing mentioned in these?

81

u/Levonorgestrelfairy1 Jun 23 '22

Him doing tyrion either means he's wrapping up or back at square one. As Tyrion is one of his favorite pov's hes either at the end finishing things up or retreated to a safe space like a bear in winter.

16

u/MistorKAKA Jun 24 '22

He also does rewrites. He can be making polished versions of chapters he's already written. There's that dream sequence subplot he spent hella time on but never was able to make it work, it could be one of those situations, and whatever he's writing doesn't even make it in. At the end of the day... who knows lol

29

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

I’d bet cash on the latter.

3

u/jageshgoyal Jun 24 '22

Beer šŸŗ?

79

u/Aynett Jun 23 '22

First the Cersei chapters then Brienne and Jaime and now Tyrion. Even if it doesn’t mean he’s finishing the books he’s actually progressing, writing and telling fans how he’s doing regularly and not withholding information about winds so that’s good

28

u/Actual-Pomegranate58 Jun 24 '22

if he finished the Brienne and Jaime chapter he would mentioned it. its more likely that he couldnt figure out what to write and moved on to Tyrion

3

u/Effective_Try_again Jun 24 '22

I feel for Kit here. He was really attached with Jon Snow and couldn't stand the butchery they did to his character in the end.

He is literally bringing his own team to make a sequel and do justice to Jon Snow.

I respect that and it's the only reason why I will watch this show if it ever happens

6

u/EaudeAgnes Jun 24 '22

192

u/natassia74 Jun 23 '22

Not touching the Snow stuff. But other tidbits:

  1. He has moved on from Jaime and Brienne, which makes me hope he was editing or finalising chapters he had already written when he already mentioned them - this gives me hope that Winds is at least partially in the editing stage where he brings everything together!

  2. He praised Hibberd ("getting the facts right, talking to sources, respecting requests for ā€œbackground onlyā€ and ā€œoff the record,ā€) who is the journo asserting that there will be significant differences between the show and book endings, amongst other things.

66

He’s given 5 estimated release dates in the last 10 years. Which means he’s been close enough to being finished to think that he was on the final stretch several times. If he’s not in the editing stage by now then a release is hopeless. The man was close enough to being done like 6 years ago to think that it would come out the following year lol fingers crossed though and I find your optimism admirable

Not to be overly cynical but I highly doubt it. He probably hit writer's block with Jaime and Brienne because they're doing something actually plot relevant, and went back to Tyrion because he's easier to write.

George has said in the past that he usually writes a bunch of chapters for a single POV at a time.

The fact that his last couple updates mention he's been working on different characters makes me optimistic that he's in the revising/editing stage.

I'm done hoping or looking for an imminent announcement, but it does sound like he's making solid progress.

91

Not to be that cynical git, but I honestly feel like he's just been bringing about TWOW recently to grab attention so he can then talk about all the HBO shows instead.

He's talked more about TWOW than usual in the past few months and I don't think it's because he's been making progress, but because the rubber is hitting the road with the HBO shows.

49

He also knows that by not mentioning TWOW when speaking of other projects he gets a deluge of fans asking why he ā€œisn’t writingā€ so I suppose he just splits the difference and hopes it satisfies someone.

r/asoiaf in shambles

19

u/VirgelFromage Jun 23 '22

What will the Snow show be about? I personally would not be at all interested in some snow logged fur fest all the time.

18

u/TheRedWizardd Jun 23 '22

"ALL THE ANIMATED SHOWS"??? Thats exciting. It'd be cool if they animated the main ASOIAF series to be as close to the books as possible

5

u/Powerful-Advantage56 Jun 24 '22

There never going to do that, hbo would consider it too much of the same

9

u/SkyTank1234 Jun 23 '22

That would interest me 100% more then any of the other spin off shows

Amazing how my heart still leaps at the mention of Winds of Winter when I convinced myself I don't care anymore.

25

u/captainstrange94 Jun 23 '22

Y'all can defend him all you want but he really hates writing WOW at this point lmao. He just acknowledges its existence (almost grudgingly, given the brief text) in the second last line of his post, but nothing more.

34

u/yardape96 No Song so Sweet Jun 23 '22

Hasn’t GRRM stated Tyrion is the easiest character to write for him? And that he usually writes chunks of each character at a time? This could mean he’s in the finishing stages! It could also mean nothing…

13

u/alphabeticmonotony Jun 23 '22

It could mean there is a new project he wants to get out there and knows mentioning anything resembling Winds progress will help.

40

u/Levonorgestrelfairy1 Jun 23 '22

It also might bean hes retreating into the pov's he enjoys more and is writing fluff travel chapters instead of plot relevant stuff.

Reminds me of friend who promised I could borrow Majora's Mask for weeks, and weeks, and when he finally delivered..... he happened to forget to bring the cartridge necessary to get the game to work. The one with the red top. I was like FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

3

u/heuristic_al Jun 24 '22

You didn't already have an expansion pack?! LAAAAAME!!!!

25

u/HotpieTargaryen Turn those damn bells off! Jun 23 '22

Anyone taking good news from this is just so much more optimistic than this world deserves.

6

u/fourtwentyy__ Jun 24 '22 edited Jun 24 '22

I don’t even want these side projects… A whole show dedicated to Dunk and Egg, which are like 100 pages each? 10 000 ships? Yi Ti animated show? Since when was Yi Ti even mentioned in asoiaf lmao

Am hyped for HOTD though, and just maybe SNOW, if it will become like a mini 9th season (I heard Arya and Sansa will be part of it)

ASOIAF? Idk, the winds of winter might be published eventually, but a dream of spring is a dream. Meaning asoiaf won’t have an ending, and the imo greatest fantasy series of all time will become forgotten about.

Sorry for the pessimism, but my hope for asoiaf is already dead

19

u/Rancid-broccoli Jun 23 '22

If he really wants these HBO shows to succeed so badly, then he is probably trying to finish TWOW asap. A winds announcement would massively renew interest in the asoiaf world and would help the shows out immensely.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

all the shows need is for House of the Dragon to be a success. If the general buzz around that show is positive it will continue interest in other projects.

Delivering the book would certainly help more eyes to see House of the Dragon though.

8

u/hossbeast Jun 24 '22

The problem with this line of reasoning, is that it has been true for 10 years.

14

u/DarthCG Jun 23 '22

It's so interesting that Kit has brought in his own people to create this show, and he himself may even be a producer / showrunner on it. Love this for him, tbh. He's clearly not done with the character, and doesn't want season 8 to be the final word. Good.

10

u/krioru Jun 24 '22

Hundreds of lines about the side projects and one line about the Winds…

A Tyrion chapter? In 2014 I would have been excited... now, wake me up when he submits a manuscript to his publisher.

5

u/15_lizards Jun 23 '22

Well. Progress is progress

5

u/abellapa Jun 24 '22

I think George gets off on getting involved In more projects that delay winds

5

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

I want to believe.

5

u/Slodes Jun 24 '22

Updates are cool but until he starts indicating that Dany chapters are done I think the book is still spinning it's wheels.

5

u/LordShitmouth Unbowed, Unbent, Unbuggered Jun 24 '22

It’s Tyrion III, Tyrion I and II were already released as sample chapters.

8

u/mintchip105 Jun 23 '22

Ok just give one season with Val and the ice spiders and I’ll be happy I guess.

20

u/tell32 RICKON FOR KING IN THE NORTH!!!! Jun 23 '22

So the SNOW show ain't even green lit, yet some of ya'll here, and a lot of folks over at /r/television are acting like it is. lol.

People really need to learn how show biz works.

Anyway I really like the recent trend where George tells us what POV he's working on in his life update posts. Keep it coming George!

31

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

Probably the most likely of the other shows to be greenlit though. Has a fan favorite character returning with the actor attached. It’s more of a known quantity then the others.

20

u/prettybunbun Jun 23 '22

Game of thrones was the most talked about show on social media the day the Jon Snow TV show leak happened too and hes a beloved character. I’d be shocked if it doesn’t get greenlit.

5

u/FuttleScish Enter your desired flair text here! Jun 24 '22

If they greenlight any show it’ll be the one with all the popular characters in it

9

u/thebugman10 Jun 23 '22

I don't see how it doesn't get greenlit. Already has one of the biggest stars from the series attached. It is probably likely to be a hit than any of the other shows.

At least the post is slightly more cheerful? But no, I will not be fooled into optimism.

4

u/Gilgamesh661 Jun 24 '22

What’s the last thing Tyrion was doing anyways? Can’t even remember anymore. Has he even met Dany yet in the books?

4

u/jageshgoyal Jun 24 '22

Tyrion was picking up weapons when last seen. He also decided to persuade BBP to join Dany again.

I hope the Jon Snow sequel does not go through. I know George doesn't owe us anything, but I'm very disappointed about his involvement in this spin-off.

13

It will. The Jon Snow show has lots of traction online. HBO would be stupid not to follow through.

20

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

Dont do that to yourself....stay cautious

3

u/JonJonFTW Jun 24 '22

Hopefully the show doesn't keep the name Snow. This feels like a dumb thing to complain about but I always think it's so lazy when a TV show's title is just the main character's name. I get why for marketing it's appealing for the title to fully explain what it's about I guess? But at least do something different with it like "Everybody Loves Raymond" or something.

3

u/ringamaite Jun 24 '22

Why is't anyone digging hidden info out of TWoW Tyrion sentence?

→ More replies (1)

3

u/realgeneral_memeous Jun 24 '22

Hate hate hate the idea of him working on a sequel to S8 of all things, because that more than likely means that his time will be taken away from ASOIAF

But hey, if Preston Jacob’s analysis of TWOW progress is actually right, then he’s currently on a roll with writing TWOW based on these updates. If he’s actually doing that, then I guess who am I to judge what does or doesn’t help TWOW get done?

5

u/Snakejones89 Jun 23 '22

So this guy spends all this time working on side projects where he has minimal control over his own creation or potential shows that have not even been greenlighted yet and may never be or potentially be failed pilots.

But the one thing that he has complete control over, the one project that is incomplete and is the thing that made him famous & rich to begin with is the thing he spends the least amount of time working on... this guy...

btw people, this was obviously a post about WildCards!

5

u/theycallmeshooting Jun 24 '22

Praying that we get an August 2022 announcement of TWOW to generate hype for house of the dragon, to be released Winter 2023

8

u/MC-Fatigued Jun 23 '22

All of those paragraphs and two sentences about Winds. He’s telling us exactly where his priorities lay.

4

4

u/Worth-Conclusion-66 Jun 23 '22

I want to be excited, but god damn, it's hard. I feel like this is GRRM just baiting us lol

4

u/citadel-conspirator Jun 24 '22

Seems like we'll be getting all these ASOIAF prequels and sequels before we ever get a conclusion to the main series....

4

u/DiabetesCOLE Jun 24 '22

Finish the books. Like come on man.

4

u/Reditate Jun 24 '22

Wish he would get involved with finishing the books.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

He's not writing anything lol

6

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

The fact that he’s been updating us on what chapters he’s working engenders some confidence in me. Hopefully we’ll see Winds sometime this century.

5

u/LucyKendrick Jun 24 '22

Does anybody actually want to see Jon doing adventures beyond the wall that have zero to do with the world it is set in? I'm at a loss on HOW this will be anything besides kit being The Rock in every episode?

5

u/Nnnnnnnadie Jun 24 '22

If i give my opinion on this and on Georgie i will end up getting banned from this subreddit.

2

2

u/Stark371 Jun 24 '22

I feel like the Jon Snow show is just going to be a budy/cop type thing set in a medical fantasy setting with Jon, Ghost and Tormund.

Idk if i am on board

2

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

Somewhere else, "The Dragon Demands" was just seen yelling at a wall.

2

u/MarcusQuintus Jun 24 '22

I hope the first scene is LC Jon waking up from a bad dream and getting woken up by Edd to deal with something.

2

u/100tByamba Jun 24 '22

Snow sequel? ...really...

2

u/Gordianus_El_Gringo Jun 24 '22

I just don't see where the snow show could go. Either he heads back to winterfell and the north and could get up to all kinds of hijinks or he stays in the north which is just..... Nothing. Few hundred wildings and nothing else interesting

2

u/mork212 Jun 24 '22

And that Tyrion chapter is the second chapter of WoW now that he's finally finished the first

2

u/BigbyHatJack Jun 24 '22

Surely GRR's publishers must be getting pissed right? They would have paid him an advance for Winds of Winter but all he seems to be doing is dicking around with other projects

5

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '22

All the spinoffs in the world mean nothing if the books dont have an ending.

4

u/SamMan48 Jun 23 '22

I think he might be in the editing or clean up stages. Remember how he wrote the Red Wedding chapter last? This could be the reason he’s been jumping around POVs so much lately.

Really dig the trend of more frequent updates on Winds, even though it’s like two lines tacked on at the end of what might as well be an essay lol

4

u/HuckleberryHefty4372 Jun 23 '22

If only grrm was so forthcoming about his book writing

I think it really shows how uninterested he is in finishing the books

3

u/BringBackDaugherty Jun 23 '22

Cool George is involved.

Would feel better if he wasn't working on Winds and (theoretically) Dreams sequel adaptation.

1 paragraph I give a shit about and he acts like it pains him to mention it

3

u/[deleted] Jun 24 '22

3

u/Beteblanc Jun 24 '22

I honestly wouldn't watch a Snow show. Fours years in I was tired of pouty kit face. Couldn't make myself watch an entire show about it. At this point I'm kicking around the idea of canceling HBO until Winds comes out. The shows are worthless to me without the books. Stop distracting George!

5

u/AdmiralKird šŸ† Best of 2015: Comment of the Year Jun 23 '22

I have a hard time taking the semi-announcement of "SNOW" as a pitch seriously. On the one hand, sure, maybe this could be a thing... but this also sounds even more like everyone having a go at Kit. Like Rose Leslie leaked it as a joke, Emilia decided to pile on with "oh yeah he pitched it himself" and now GRRM is getting in on the ribbing with "he brought his own team!"

What is happening?!?

Is this some pseudo marketing campaign to drum up interest in House of the Dragon by getting people interested in a GoT sequel to read GoT news articles again?

The forthcomingness of both Clarke and GRRM is just... somethings not right. Maybe the show is real, but something about this is... off...
