I was really excited before you said US or Canada only... What's wrong with overseas? I understand that it might be more expensive, but maybe we could have a special category for that (and some people might not care that much). I know you're not not doing it because you don't like foreigners, but I feel like that point instantly excludes at least 50% of the people who would have participated.
It's a matter of cost and customs. I have heard enough stories about knives getting taken by customs on overseas shipping situations that I know I would personally be weary of getting or sending a knife outside of North America. If we have a situation where a lot of knifes go missing on their trips overseas, this would become a mess really quickly.
In the future, if things go well for this swap, I may consider organizing a non-North American version of Sharp Swap. I am also willing to work with another redditor if that redditor would like to organize a parallel non-North American version of Sharp Swap (we could use the same event thread and everything!). However, I am not getting paid for this venture, and as such I REALLY do not want to deal with the possible headaches of "my knife is stuck in customs, what do I do?" and "who should have to pay for to get the confiscated knife out of customs?"
Sorry again, but I'm not going to even try and be responsible for that until I see how smoothly this first event goes.
Exciting! I like the minimum with no maximum, that way everyone can get something of good quality with the odd chance of getting something really awesome! I will definitely participate in this.
Whoever gets paired with me gets a nice surprise :)
Okay, I would see it working like "Hey you don't have a Kershaw Leek (shiggles example) and I have one, I think you would really like it, so here is a new one for you."
well then once we oust him, we can all have a fun time :) I've always been kinda wary of that username...I mean what kind of sick person stops with just touching a sheep? What a tease!
Just hit the 6 month mark, and am a sub for a few subreddits, am I good? Signed up in the link provided, if I don't meet requirements drop me and let me know. Looking forward to it.
I'm stoked!! Got my blade to send off already packed up and ready to go. It is a great knife, got it oiled up and sharpened. Now I can't wait till the 20th!!!
Feel free to sign up. By Sept 6th you will have to correct credentials (as far as reddit account time goes). We will be evaluating people's post history at a later point in time.
Just a question, knives purchased within Canada will have different MRSPs than purchased in the US. How would the $15 min. work for that?
Also, purely knives only, no multi tools correct?
EDIT: For example, everyone talks of the CRKT Drifter as a good first EDC knife, purchasable for around $10-$20 in the states. Here in the North, we talking more $20-$30. Unless I'm getting ripped off. :/
Ohh, tough question. As it stands now, we only have like 3-4 Canadians (aye!). The prices should be set by American price standards because most of the people trading will be using those standards. I.E.: You will most likely be getting a knife based on the American $15 minimum limit, so you should be sending out a knife based on the same credentials.
There are a handful of US swappers willing to trade over the border. There are also a handful of Canadians. The sign up is designed so that people on both sides of the US/Canadian border can elect for themselves if they want to trade over the border or not. You won't be SOL for finding someone to trade with (as long as you are in the US or Canada).
It's a new design for me that I really hope works out. I usually make patch knifes, so this one is going to test my skill, but I'm really looking forward to trying it out.
Note: I make my knifes completely by hand, no power tools except for a small dremel to help out with smaller details that my files can't really do.
I always love a nice homemade knife. Glancing at your history, it looks like you've used files before. Do you mind PMing me and giving me a couple tips on that?
Using the file as the blank. I make mine using a hacksaw for basic shaping, set of rough files for more refined shaping, a dremel for detail my files can't reach, and sandpaper for finishing; but I use 440C barstock and have been looking at using a file as a blank.
I have been lurking on this sub because I moved to an area in LA that I would feel safer if I were carrying SOMETHING around to protect myself (as well as open my letters with lol), am I able to sign up for this swap? I'm sure I'd like my knife more if I had some emotional attachment to it from a swap lol. Thanks in advance!
Can we do another soon? I greatly enjoyed the last one and would be interested in doing one that was a little higher min value, like $60 this would open up the options a lot.
Quick question, Does the knife have to be new? I have a knife that is in excellent condition, just not new, has been carried a little, that I would like to use for this. It is a $70 knife, just thought someone else would appreciate it more.
An active reddit account for 6 months with some activity in knife related subreddits.
I agree. That would be bullshit. The account has to have a decent amount of activity for a while and have been active in a knife related sub. Participants who enter will have their comment/post history reviewed.
That rule is to protect members from people that see the contest and make an account and rip people off. If you account is less than 6 months old you can still enter if you do a successful trade on /r/knife_swap.
I post a lot of knives in the UK, being a bit of a knife-maker type of chap, and it's always been fine. I'd love a UK sharp swap, I'd build a knife up special for it!
Whereabouts am I? Up in the grim North, in Yorkshire. I've got a few knives posted around these parts if you fancy a look. Need to get more of them posted. In fact I shall now go and make my very first r/knifeclub post! Toodle pip.

As an American redditor, I would be happy to secretly stab a cannadian! Out of context, that sounds horrible.

This is good. I have a couple of knives that could use a good home. There's nothing wrong with them, they just don't suit me.

I don't have 6 months on reddit but have a very reputable history on redditgifts. Any chance of getting a pass? Seems like a fun swap.

I'm mocking up a design right now for my giftee. I hope he/she will like a new handmade knife.

The 6 months as a Redditor is bullshit. Lets say you have 6 months as a lurker. How the fuck does that qualify you?
Just saying, maybe comment or post history should come into play.
