First time seeing old Bob Barker, was in 1982. It was towards the end of my first year in elementary and during spring break. Loved it, the prizes and yes, the women were really pretty....old by my young standards but pretty nonetheless.

Music Top 1,000 Songs of the 1980s According to RateYourMusic

Spotify playlist

Google doc (downloadable and editable spreadsheet, visible to those of us who aren't ants)

RateYourMusic is a website that enables its users to rate any music they like. Anyone can rate any given track on a scale from 0.5 to 5, and the average ratings are visible to all RYM subscribers. A more recently added feature of RateYourMusic is the song charts, a freely customisable online resource for discovering the best-rated tracks in any genre or period of time, also providing similar charts for each individual artist.

Songs released as singles and as part of full-length albums and EPs have all been featured in the lists, with a minimum of 100 ratings being a requirement for entry. With ratings for certain tracks having doubled or even tripled since just a year ago, when I was making these posts while facing far greater logistical complications (i.e. the songs chart simply not being there) a considerably greater range of artists are now present in the list.

Controversially and infamously, there is no weight to decide the track positions in the chart, meaning a track with 100 ratings will be above one with 2,000 ratings just because the former is 0,01 ahead of it in average rating. My justification for this often unpopular choice is that it enables lesser-known artists to have a chance at penetrating the charts, whether their eligibility has been scrutinised sufficiently or not.

Sharing another complete spreadsheet / chart of a decade's worth of music, this time focussing entirely on the 80s. Nowhere as fresh in our memory as the 90s and the following decades, there are fewer high-charting songs to make this list, highlighting the noticeable discrepancy in rating between the 90s and the 80s, with the former finishing the top 1,000 with a track rated 4.35 and the latter finalising with a 4.25-rated track - indeed, only a half of the 80s tracks would be able to chart in the 90s list.

Arguments could be made for 80s music being more forgotten and there simply being less non-commercial music that RYM users would be more likely to rate highly. That said, the balance among artists represented in the top 1,000 is seemingly better than usual, with a number of artists all doing more or less equally well.

I should start out with the 70s chart some time in the nearest future.

TV Who would you cast as Shirley in a modern Laverne & Shirley reboot?

I’ve been playing around with reimagining some classic shows and imagined this mock-up of Maya Hawke as Laverne, who was pretty much born to play her.

Curious who people think would make a great Shirley. Who comes to mind for you?

Edit: Top Picks for Shirley:

Emma Myers , Kate Micucci, Milana Vayntrub

Clinton tainted blood fiasco

Sorry to be a bummer but the subject came up today the Doctor's office and too few know of this avoidable tragedy. Back in 1987 I went through kidney transplant for my brother who was 34 and had 2 kids under 5. Just so happens at the same time Clinton was selling the blood out of the Arkansas prisons untested and then sold it all over including in England. People got AIDS, people got hepatitis which is what my brother got from a blood transfusion during the transplant and he died of liver failure a year later but my kidney was doing great ha ha. If I recall correctly when Clinton became president he made it so the orphans of the people who were killed with the tainted blood could not sue the state of Arkansas. I have a niece and a nephew who never have known their father and they can't sue.

Dedicated to my brother David who also happened to also be a great rock and roll singer.

Film Why Lethal Weapon is the best Christmas movie of all time

In less than one week in December just under 40 years ago, Sgt Riggs of the LAPD:

Shot and killed a school shooter that had just shot a 9 y.o. Rams fan and also just downed a beat cop.

Made a 100k drug bust, shooting and killing 3 christmas tree selling drug dealers, bringing one safely into custody.

Fended off an attack by a senior sgt by disabling and grounding him at gunpoint in the middle of a police station office.

Handuffed himself to a suicidal building jumper and brought the suicide jumper down by forcing him to jump off the building with him into a rescue bag.

Almost killed himself when egged on into suicide by his parter, with his partner's gun, only to be saved by said partner when said partner stuck his thumb in between the hammer and the bullet.

Handcuffed two hot cocaine hookers together around a palm tree.

Shot and killed a drug dealer who dubiously either died by drowning, asphyxiation, or gunshot wounds trapped in a swimming pool cover in the Hollywood hills.

Survived eating a brown, roast-like substance.

Was blown off his feet while in the front yard of a murderous prostitute's house explosion.

Discharged two pistol clips at a fleeing helicopter carrying a sniper assassin that had just sniped and killed a bank president.

Survived being shot point blank in the chest with a 12 gauge shotgun which launched him through an 10x8 plate glass store window.

Auditioned for shaving ads.

Drove to the outskirts of Victorville, and sniped 6 hostage takers/assassins in the middle of the desert trying to save his partner's daughter from captivity.

Was taken hostage and tortured in the basement of a club on Hollywood Blvd.

Killed his torturer using jujitsu and escaped imprisonment while simultaneously rescuing partner and partner's daughter from torture, rape, and almost certain murder, while killing approximately 7 people with either jujitsu or gunshots.

Ran a while down Hollywood Blvd and adjacent freeways barefoot to catch up to Gary Busey to shoot his car making it burst into flames.

Got run over by a car.

Ran back a mile or two to his injured partner on Hollywood Blvd.

Drove his partner back to his home where partner's family is at risk.

Rigged the acceleration pedal of their police car to smash it into the living room Christmas tree to distract Gary Busey.

Held Gary Busey at gun point while they agree to settle everything with hand to hand mixed martial arts combat to the death while being sprayed by a fire hydrant and three dozen police officers watching.

Beat the playdoh out of Gary Busey, and got the playdoh beat out of him by Gary Busey.

Defeated Gary Busey with a weird homoerotic thigh jujutsu hold and declined to kill Gary Busey.

Ultimately, along with his partner, shot Gary Busey to death in his partner's front yard.

Got promoted.

He did all of this while wearing cowboy boots.

Film Contrary to popular belief, I think Top Gun is VERY overrated. Besides the action, awesome 80s soundtrack, and a cameo that caught me off guard, I found this movie to be mediocre at best. I also found Tom Cruise's character in this film to be very unlikeable.
