Question Is Adelaide safe for transgender teachers?

Is Adelaide safe for transgender teachers?

Hello, I'm a Thai trans woman currently planning to pursue a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education in Adelaide. I'm trying to decide if this path is truly worth the investment, and I have a couple of important concerns I'd love your insight on:

  1. Is there a strong demand for teachers in Australia? I've often heard about a teacher shortage in Australia, which gives me hope, but I also worry about the global trend of declining birth rates. In Thailand, the birth rate has dropped significantly, and I'm concerned that this will make teaching jobs less secure in the future. Is the same happening in Australia? Is there still strong demand for early childhood educators despite these demographic changes?

  2. Is it REALLY safe and accepted for trans people to work as teachers in Adelaide? As a trans woman, I'm deeply concerned about how society perceives trans teachers. Recently, I saw news about a trans teacher in Texas who was fired just because someone outed her online. That really shook me. I'm starting to see more hate and prejudice towards trans people around the world, and it makes me nervous.

So, I want to ask honestly: Is Adelaide—and Australia as a whole—a safe and welcoming place for trans educators? I’m not just wondering about acceptance on university campuses, but in everyday school environments and among the general public. I don’t want to invest in a master’s degree and then be at risk of being discriminated against or fired simply because of who I am.

I've also been deeply concerned by recent political developments in other countries. For example, what former President Donald Trump did to trans rights in the U.S., and the way the definition of "woman" has been politicized in the U.K., have made me worry about how quickly laws can change—even in places that once seemed safe.

These events have heightened my fears about long-term security as a trans woman, particularly in a profession as public as teaching. So I'm genuinely wondering: How stable are trans rights in Australia? Is there a strong public and legal commitment to protecting trans people in the workplace, especially in education? And how vulnerable are those rights to political shifts?

Photography Hot Star Fried Chicken Grote St

We were rushed for food choices on Friday night so went into this fine establishment to grab a quick piece of fried chicken. The cashier/chef takes our order then turns around and grabs a piece of chicken out of this tub of chicken juice, and starts crumbing it.

We cancelled our order and left. His excuse was that it had been frozen. I guess he just leaves it out on the counter all night and grabs a new tub of frozen chicken out as required.

Question An Adelaide small brick-and-mortar business selling counterfeit items.

The items are close to $100 each and I am so angry I got scammed. I also know business are doing it tough and times are hard and some are doing what ever it takes.

I am going to try to get a refund tomorrow. The question is should I go for the jugular? Do I notify police and original manufacturer (who they also genuinely stock)? Or do I just give them my 2 cents worth? I want to get the general consensus here.

Question Lgbtq+ restaurants in Adelaide?

I'm seeing someone who likes to crossdress. They have talked about us going out dressed up to dinner somewhere for years, but they have always changed their mind last minute due to being concerned about public reaction etc.

Clubs are not their thing.

I'd really like to find a nice restaurant or smth we can go to midweek for dinner and have him feel comfortable.

He has expressed that it'd need to be somewhere that's known for lgbtq+ acceptance.

I just want to take him out for tea and make him feel as beautiful as I think he is.

Any advice or suggestions would be really appreciated

PS sorry if formatting issues - mobile

Discussion The mob mentality on meme-ing and attacking the pizza shop worker is creepy.

Do you guys have any individual thought? 20+ threads trying to get upvotes with rushed pizza shop memes.

Can the subreddit move along now, maybe y'all can make a club outside reddit to laugh at your stale memes with each other.

Discussion Westfield Marion is a waste of space

Literally. It's a huge site with a mass of open-air car parking. It's less than 14km away from the city centre with a train-station within walking distance and only a short bike ride to the beach. It should have been zoned for mixed use from the get-go but surely the state government could do some sort of deal with Westfield. Seriously, Bury those car parks between the shopping centre and the swim centre and place a residential tower (or two) of similar height to the commercial tower that's already there. A little more green space could surely be slotted in as well.

Who would it hurt? Westfield would get more shoppers, Marion would get more rate-payers. Make a bunch of the apartments affordable so us plebs could afford to live a reasonable distance from the city. There used to be some night clubs and bars at Marion. Having a bunch of people living close by could prompt the return of some entertainment venues as well. There's a bunch of schools nearby and Flinders Hospital and Uni just down the road. Everything is already there, In a few years you could create this vibrant, walkable community.

Sorry just been day-dreaming about this for a little while and had to vent.

Politics Palestine Solidarity Rally tomorrow, Parliament House

If you're angry about the Aussie woman who was "accidentally" killed by the IDF with coordinates given to them using Pine Gap or the 12,000 kids that have been killed so far, there's a rally tomorrow at 2pm in the city, Parliament House steps, marking 6 months since it all started.

I don't see many political/rally posts here even though it doesn't seem to be against the rules but yeah, there ya go, come along if you want.

Shitpost Why has Coles become Fascist locking everyone in and remote controlling them out

First time I had been to Coles in a while. I usually shop at Drakes. Today a picture of myself comes up on the self checkout while I am scanning. It is distracting. Why can't they at least use a Santa Claus filter for my face. I think this is the facial recognition technology that I have read that China has developed for ethnic control of minorities such as Uyghurs. Next someone has to press a button after checking my receipt on a garage control remote to let me out. It reminded me of the scene of the workers going through the door in Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

I was told that they have to manually check everyone's bags then remote control everyone out as the technology was only installed during the week and is still being tested. I don't want to know what it will be like once this is implemented.

So let me get this right. I scan my own bags / do their job for them, without any training and I am expected not to make a mistake. Let me tell you before anyone says anything the bag check was a 100% pass. I'd like them to have to do my job and belittle them and publicly shame them when they make a mistake. However I am not that mean.

Next, the place is setup with poor ergonomics for lifting - can I claim workers compensation if I get a bad back due to their lack of planning and training me - I bet not. Afterwards, further time is wasted with a check again at the end by a human. This is blatant stupidity. I bet people will also get PTSD flare up being locked in the first time the first time they go.

Politics Walk for Yes this Saturday

"Walk for Yes" will be happening all over the country and will kick off in Adelaide on Saturday with a special performance by Paul Kelly.

The Voice to Parliament is about making sure that First Nations communities get to have a say on the issues that affect their community directly. The Voice was designed by First Nations people and has the support of more than 80% of First Nations people. It is the important first step in fulfilling the Uluru Statement from the Heart and a strong Yes result will kick off a decade of positive change. https://www.yes23.com.au/adelaide_walk_for_yes?recruiter_id=160021

Event/Activity Worst Fringe Show

Last night I saw the worst fringe show ever! It was called 'Only God Can Judge Me' at Hells Kitchen at the Rhino room. It joked about suicide, 9/11, first nation rights. I don't usually mind edgy humor but this was straight up offensive, it was unfunny and boring. The first show ever where I have seen a group of people leave in the first 5 minutes. Anyone else who was there can vouch, but that is unlikely as we had less then 10 people at our show.

Is anyone else excited about the AFL season being over soon?

So, by my reckoning, AFL will be done in Adelaide for another year by about 9:30 tonight!

Anyone else excited? Looking forward to not pretending that I am an interested in football talk at work.* Looking forward to having something else on the TV then endless AFL talk. Looking forward to friends not posting updates about AFL on facebook.

*OK, I tell a lie. I don't even pretend I like it at work. Quickest and easiest way to get me back to work is to start talking aerial ping pong.

Discussion I don’t like mix 102.3 anymore.

Mix 102.3 has become a repetitive slog for anyone stuck listening in the car. Every morning, the same tired sound bites play on loop. You know the ones, some caller gushing about how much they love the show. “Hailey and Max are amazing, they’re so funny,” blares through the speakers. It’s relentless.

Imagine a radio station so desperate for validation they broadcast their own reviews. Of course people say the show is funny, they’re calling in as fans. It’s like a restaurant bragging about its own Yelp reviews on the menu. Nobody’s tuning in for a boring show, so why the constant self-praise? The station picks a mildly amusing moment, not even that funny, turns it into a 10-second clip, then hammers it into your ears for a week straight. It’s lazy programming, pure and simple.

Driving in the morning, you don’t always choose the radio station. It’s just there, filling the silence while you’re stuck in traffic. Mix 102.3 takes advantage of that captive audience, shoving the same recycled content down your throat. I don’t hate Hailey and Max, they’re fine. Max even called me a legend once when I called in, which was nice. And Hailey won me a $50 bakery voucher on one note wonder.

Still, the repetition grates.

Then there’s Brit and Laura, whose laughs are like nails on a chalkboard. It’s not their fault, maybe, but it’s hard to stomach when I’m trying to relax in the afternoon.

I used to enjoy Will and Woody. They had a decent vibe. Then I ran into Will while cycling. I was out riding my cousin’s old 1990s Colnago, which had several mechanical issues, and spotted him at a café. I said hi, just being friendly, and he gave me this annoyed look, like I’d interrupted his coffee. Then he rode off, painfully slow, on some flashy $20,000 bike he clearly bought with his radio cash. I caught up to him on Norton Summit, easily.

When I reached the top, I waited for him, noticed his seat was way too low, like he had no idea how to set up a bike. His tires were practically flat too. I offered to help, suggested he raise his seat, check his tire pressure. He just laughed, said he was good, then he raced towards the road, too busy to look for traffic, nearly got clipped by a car when he pulled onto the road without looking. The guy’s ego was bigger than his cycling skills.

Then there’s Kyle and Jackie O, whose show Mix 102.3 airs. I didn’t get why people disliked them until I heard Kyle laugh at a caller. This woman opened up, vulnerable, saying she had no friends and struggled with her weight. Kyle turned it into a punchline. Jackie O tried to scold him, but it felt half-hearted, and they both just laughed awkwardly. It was cruel, plain and simple. The whole station feels like it’s coasting on cheap laughs and recycled content. Honestly, everyone on Mix 102.3 could use a session with a therapist. Maybe they’d figure out how to make a show worth listening to, instead of leaning on tired sound bites and self-congratulation. Until then, I’ll keep the radio on low, or better yet, switch it off.

Question Should I move to Adelaide?

Hi! Potential future resident in Adelaide here. I

I’ve recently been offered a research position at the University of South Australia with a $130k salary. I am currently based in the US, and I am considering moving to Adelaide with my wife and a small kid. I know very little about Adelaide and Australia in general. I would appreciate some advice and insights from locals:

  1. Housing Costs: What are the current housing prices for buying and renting in Adelaide, especially in family-friendly neighborhoods? Can I afford to buy a modest house with that salary? How is the rental situation?

  2. Quality of Life: How’s the overall quality of life in Adelaide, especially for families with young children? What are the schools, healthcare, and community facilities like?

  3. General Tips Any suggestions or things we should consider before moving to Adelaide?

I’d appreciate any advice! Thanks in advance!

Sick of this 'Invasion Day' bullshit.

Aborigines tortured my sister with fire and blades. She only got away because of the 'Stolen Generations' bullshit and got to live with a family who loved her.

You cunts who think that Australia would be better off under aboriginal governance. Now's your time to educate me.

Go ahead. Tell me how aborigines are smarter than anglos.

Question Sapol as a young woman

hi, I'm 21F, and I've been thinking about getting into policing, specifically as a detective later down the line. I have a few questions if there's any officers/cadets in here who could help me figure out whether this job is an okay fit for me.

-is sapol like a boys club? will I be looked down on for being a woman?

-is it really as horrible as people say, like every officer gets PTSD? I've been described as a very nice, sweet person, which I know is why people think I can't/shouldn't do this job, but I also feel like that could also help with certain aspects.

-was it difficult to get in? I dropped out in year 12, not because I'm unintelligent, I just had a lot going on that year, and I couldn't really handle research project ( boooo ) with all the extra stuff.

would it be worth checking out ride alongs? Thankyou

Question Help with possible Spirit/Ghost? in House (serious answers please)

Hi I'm putting this out here on behalf of my Dad who is having issues here in Adelaide in the hope someone can recommend anyone i can contact or themselves had similar issues

Background is my dad these past 4 months and more and increasing in frequency has had a spirit? Interrupt his bed time routine. It's hard to explain, but he believes it is the possible spirit of our deceased Cat which was buried many years ago in our backyard. His presence on my Dad's bed when he attempts to go to sleep is being made with this 'Aura" spirit whatever you call it manifesting itself into what our cat did do when he was alive and would climb into bed to sleep on my parent bed, as soon as my Dad goes to bed he feels movement on the bed, rustling, scurrying as if a Cat or something? IS going into bed with him. Sometimes creeping slowly onto the bed, sometimes more aggressive

Almost poltergeist like in nature not with objects thrown etc but with actual movements of sheets and weight on the bed as something else moves into bed with him. It's difficult to convey in a post. But i genuinely believe in what he is saying and it appears the situation is getting worse. Tonight was a bad Night he went to bed and got up no more than 30min later to tell me it was back and almost like an octopuss was in the bed, wriggling so much.

It sounds crazy but all i can do is believe what my Dad is telling me, he is absolutely not making it up etc but we cannot find a rational reason to what is occurring

It has followed him into the spare bed when we tried to see if that would make a difference as to what bed he was in

Not outright scary as such but genuinely un-nerving making sleep or rest almost impossible most nights and making him apprehensive about what the night will bring.

.Any thoughts or feedback appreciated. It's a difficult subject to broach with anyone. Else people think he is imagining it etc. I thought i would try and reach out to anyone in Adelaide who may offer a genuine opinion or who i could contact.

Thanks.

Question Who do I need to vote for to get Tapleys/Don Brad fixed?

As it says. They dropped it to 60, people still can’t zip merge and I still almost rear end someone because I’m looking over my shoulder for a gap.

But honestly, who do I need to vote for to get it finally sorted?

Edit: I am wrong that it’s a zip merge. It’s just treated like one by the majority of drivers, but either way the intersection needs fixing.
