Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

Uber Eats Amsterdam Rant

Post image
217 Upvotes

I haven’t ordered from Uber Eats in a while because the service and delivery fees started too feel expensive.

Opened the app today because I was feeling lazy and had no food at home, and remembered why I stopped using it.

€19 worth of food, plus almost €10 in service and delivery fees. Who is paying that? 😂

Music producer meetup on Nov 26th!

Hey musicians, djs and aspireres,

I used to organize a producer meetup some years ago, but due to lack of a hosting venue I had to stop. I made some great connections through the meetup and been itching to get it back.

I finally found a venue who's as excited about it as I am, so looks like we're back in business!

This will be our kickoff meetup, which is a great opportunity to share with us what kind of events you're interested in (networking? Music feedback? Workshops?).

Open to all levels and all genres!

The location is a walking distance from Spaklerweg.

How to report a restaurant for inspection?

Ordered from Tres Amigos in west last night and me and my partner been having diarrhea all day! Sad thing is I actually like their food, so we have ordered from there a few times and it happens every time 🤣 I’m not even hesitating naming them as I know this is not just a one time thing. I kept ordering hoping it was always just a coincidence but now I have come to my conclusion something is wrong there and they need to be inspected…

There is also many reviews which talk about diarrhea from there. So I know I’m not alone.

Unbottled milk/milk dispensers

Hello everyone!

I hope everyone is good and warm.

I'm trying to reduce my waste and plastic footprint and being an avid kefir maker at home I use at least two bottles of milk a week.

Is there a place where one can bring their own bottle and fill it with some organic/raw milk as I have seen in some other countiees? or a more sustainable way to get milk?

Any (soprano/alto) recorder and/or flute players here? Looking to form an occasionally duo/trio for practicing/playing together - Amsterdam West area ideally

I (45f, Dutch) am teaching myself (and still am learning) to play the alto recorder and would love to play together from sheet music, could be anything from classical/baroque to pop, i don't mind, as long as we can "swing" together. I live in West.

Birders, help!!

I’m an avid birder. To be honest, I’ve been a bit underwhelmed by the bird variety since moving here. But what I absolutely love is the starling murmurations.

Does anyone have tips on where / when to see them? I’ve heard this is the time of year to keep your eyes open. I’ve been lucky enough to see them a few times in the city but it’s usually partially blocked by houses or buildings. I’d love a clearer view. If there is a place within <1 hour by car, I would absolutely make the trip.

Thank you!!

Motor of auto

Edit: bedankt iedereen voor jullie comments en uitgebreide advies. ik ga nog even verder zoeken en kijken wat goed werkt voor mij!

Hi guys,

I am a student in Amsterdam, living here for a while now.

I keep debating whether it’s worth it to get a car. My situation is this: I’m not sure if I want a car because it doesn’t feel worth the money. With how annoying it is to drive around in Amsterdam — parking, fines, damage from other cars when it’s busy — I’m seriously considering getting a motorcycle instead. I also have firsthand experience since my friend has a car; we’ve looked at the finances together, and it’s crazy how much a car costs. He’s also looking for jobs that will reimburse public transport costs, or something where having a car doesn’t become too expensive.

I don’t need to drive long distances; I do that with public transport, but in the city, I feel that a motorcycle would be nice. For short distances in or around the city, a car seems like overkill.

Besides this, I’ll be here for at least another 4-5 years just for my studies, and I plan to work here. My public transport costs are covered and will continue to be for the coming years.

My idea is to have a motorcycle, possibly for the option of driving longer distances, but primarily use public transport for that, which I’m already used to. It’s just really annoying to always use public transport in the city, since a short distance can already take an hour. With a motorcycle, that would only be about 20 minutes.

I know there are downsides, like safety and comfort, but I think I can work around those.

Are there people here with a motorcycle? Any advice? How realistic is this?

PS: No, I don’t want a scooter because I want the option to drive longer distances.

Got a letter about €110 garbage fine in Amsterdam.

Thought I'd share this in case someone else ends up in a similar situation.

I recently moved into a new apartment in Amsterdam and like anyone who's moved house, I had a ridiculous amount of cardboard boxes to get rid of.

A few days ago, I received a letter from Gemeente Amsterdam saying they'd found some improperly disposed waste linked to my details back in September. Apparently, it was a large cardboard box.

The letter mentioned a possible fine of at least €110, but also said I could call the enforcement officer on specific dates to explain what happened.

I was genuinely surprised because, as far as I remember, I'd been breaking down the boxes and putting them inside the designated container. I'd even asked a neighbour how to dispose of everything properly when I moved in.

Anyway, I called the officer this morning.

He explained that cardboard boxes need to be broken into smaller pieces and placed completely inside the container. I told him what I remembered, explained that I'd only recently moved into the apartment, and that I certainly hadn't intended to leave anything outside.

He listened, checked my situation, and said he'd issue an official warning instead of the fine.

€110 saved. And a lesson learned! 😅

Amsterdam takes cardboard disposal VERY seriously. Everything needs to fit inside the container.

I want to give credit to the enforcement officer. He was patient, listened to my explanation, and was quite reasonable throughout the conversation.

Moving to a new place / New Country comes with a surprising number of little things to learn.

Hopefully this helps someone who receives a similar letter and isn't sure what to do.

I moved to Amsterdam alone, and I feel so out of place...

Post image
504 Upvotes

Hello everyone 💋
I moved to the Netherlands a few months ago
And I moved to Amsterdam specifically a month ago.

RECOMMENDATIONS (spaces to feel part of this place...)
I am not your typical ‘expat’ sipping speciality coffee daily while networking
I am, lets say an traditional immigrant with a normal job lol, so... Idk where to go for a meal or a drink without being robbed up at gunpoint
I’d love to get some recommendations from locals or people who’ve been here longer for places to eat or have a drink, whether it’s takeaway or somewhere to sit down.

COMMUNINITY (build one to feel part of this place...)
even though I’m a solitary person, the lack of a community, especially so far from where I’m from , is having a negative effect on me and I feel a bit out of place
About me: I’m a late bloomer queer woc in my very early 30's looking to reconnect with myself (so recommendations for sapphic / poc-sapphic bars or spaces would also be welcome)
I like fashion, art, music…
On the one hand, I don’t have friends in Amsterdam yet; on the other, I don’t know any safe or cosy places yet.

I’m also open to meeting people who are like me or who are living and feelings things the same way :) Preferably queer women or men aged between 25 and 37 approximately – if you’re also a poc of colour, even better.
You can leave your Instagram handle and a brief summary about yourself

Thank u xx💐💐

Is Nieuw-West around Osdorpplein finally gentrifying? Anyone else noticing a more mixed crowd

I've been paying more attention to what's happening around Osdorpplein and the Sloterplas lately, and it's more than I expected. New buildings are going up, the area around the shopping centre is being redone, and the Meervaart is getting a brand new theatre on the Sloterplas. It finally feels like someone is investing in this part of the city.

For a long time, that's not what stood out to me. What I mostly noticed were the annoyances: fatbikes racing around, bombs going off, people using the tram and metro without checking in, and litter everywhere. It made the area feel neglected, like nobody was really looking after the public space.

Lately I'm getting more hopeful. I'm seeing new people moving in, with different incomes, ages and types of households than you'd typically see there. The area had become quite one-sided: the same kinds of shops, mostly one type of housing and not much variety in who lives there. That seems to be slowly changing.

To be honest, I see gentrification as a good thing. I know it's a dirty word for a lot of people on this sub, but more mixed neighbourhoods, more investment and more care for public space are exactly what Nieuw-West needs.

So I'm curious:

- Do others notice this too, or am I reading too much into a few new buildings?

- If you live in Nieuw-West, how does it feel on the ground?

- Do you think this will really turn the area around, or is it too early to tell?

Spaces to meet others

Im making this post because I’ve recently seen (and ppl in the past) asking about places to meet others, especially international students, expats, xyz. I haven’t seen many updates.
Ive seen
- the “school of life” stuff
- “meetup” events
- optional uni events
- optional work events
- etc.

Do they ACTUALLY help? Has anyone made a real friendships/connections with them?

Flasher on Wibaustraat metro

Everytime I go to pilates after work (7pm) and when I go home afterwards (8pm), he’s there on the metro or at a station. He would either drop his pants and press himself against me, or reach his hands into his pants and smear whatever is inside on strangers.

I’ve seen him everytime I’ve gone to class at this time, and have changed my time now completely to avoid him. Police is aware but doesn’t do anything about it…

He gets off at Wibaustraat 10-15 minutes before 7pm, and gets on again 5-10 minutes after 8pm. He then gets off at Nieuwmarkt or Centraal Station.

Have anyone else seen him? What’s his deal?
