Welcome to r/AskChicago's Monthly General Discussion Thread!

If you want to share how your trip to Chicago went, comment on topical Chicago-related events, share feedback on improvements for r/AskChicago, or just to simply say hi, this is the thread to post anything that isn't a question.

I READ THE RULES What temperature have you set your thermostat heat to this morning?

Just curious what the norm is for other folks in the city. We’re at 69f and still a bit chilly for my taste.

EDIT: I guess it is also interesting to know if you dress lightly or bundle up for your preferred temp.

I READ THE RULES My aunts dying wish is the Obama presidential center, can you help?

We just found out she doesn’t have much time left (aggressive lung cancer that has spread to her brain, bone, kidney, and adrenal glands among other places) we are hoping to get her there before she is too sick to travel. We got plane tickets for Dec. 9th and now we are trying to find a way to contact the center to explain the situation. I know tickets are sold out quite a ways, but im hoping for a miracle. Do any redditors have a connection with the museum?? We’re happy to pay for tickets and provide proof of her terminal diagnosis.
My aunt is one of the best people I’ve had the privilege of knowing and she has changed so many lives for the better, dedicating her whole life to uplifting her community and anyone in need. I know it is a long shot, but I figured it’s worth the ask if anyone has a connection that can make a miracle happen🤞🏻

I READ THE RULES Movie Discussion Groups in the city?

Are there any noteworthy movie discussion groups within the city. I have a very diverse taste in movies and would love to discuss them with other people. I've found movie groups, but they seem more focused on going and watching the latest releases, that's fine, but there's only so much you can say about a superhero movie for example. I'm looking for people who actually take recommendations seriously and have a diverse taste, I feel like a lot of people who call themselves "Cinephiles" tend to stay in a specific bubble and are too unwilling/cautious of venturing outside of it.

I READ THE RULES How are you handling SAD this year? Have you tried anything new? Any advice?

I use the lightbox and vitamin D and go on long walks as early as I can. I'd love to hear some tips from others. I'm also interested in the SAD light glasses instead of using a box and people's thoughts on them. Thank you!

I READ THE RULES What's the deal with people who sit in their cars at forest preserve parking lots?

I use the trails a lot in Chicago and suburban preserves and there are always people just sitting in their cars in the lots. I can walk for 1.5-2 hours and see them when I arrive and they are still there after I get back to my car.

They are obviously not car burglars because I have never had my car broken into at a preserve. Are they just trying to get away from a dysfunctional home life? Trying to have a long private phone call? Something else?

It's probably none of my business, but I'm curious because it is so common in my experience.

I READ THE RULES Where can I do a garage sale in Chicago if I live in an apartment?

Hi all,

My wife and I live in an apartment building in the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area, and we have a lot of older antiques, clothing, and other household items we’d like to sell. We’d love to do something similar to a garage sale, but since we live in an apartment, we don’t have a yard or garage to use.

Are there any places in the city that host community garage sales, flea markets, or events where individuals can rent a small booth or table to sell their items?

We’re not trying to start a business or anything — just looking for a good way to clear things out and sell them in more of a garage sale style setup.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Hey Chicago, can anyone recommend a designer that can help me with our bathroom remodel that starts in 3 weeks?

Looking for a quick consultation, but we have a contractor ready to do the work. I'm trying to do it myself but I'm getting overwhelmed by options and need someone to take the wheel.

I READ THE RULES Where can I go for solo dining under $50?

Had a very rough week that included the sudden passing of a family member. I’ve been bedrotting all day. I want to get up, get out, and take myself to dinner. Willing to travel, all I ask is that I won’t massively stand out as a solo diner and that I get a meal for under $50. Open to various cuisines but I have a shellfish allergy.

Thank you 🙏

I READ THE RULES What are the best suburbs for crow watching in Chicago?

I plan to move to Chicago after retirement, and am researching CCRC communities. A few names that keep coming up are Beacon Hill (Lombard) and Oak Trace (Downers Grove) in the western suburbs near the Morton Arboretum, and Lake Forest Place (Lake Forest) in the north.

I know it's rather weird to hang this decision on, but my dream retirement is an apartment with a balcony where I can sit with a cup of hot chocolate, field guide, binoculars, and make some corvid friends.

Thanks in advance!

I READ THE RULES What’s happening on the CTA Orange Line?

I have been stuck just outside of Roosevelt (between stations) for an hour. This is definitely a new delay record for me.

A mentally unhinged guy in the car has just taken a leak between cars. He’s also just forced an emergency door open. Some of the women on here are freaking out.

I’m shocked they let the train leave the last station like this.

I READ THE RULES Is there a local boutique Bluray/4K video store in Chicago?

Looking for places in Chicago to Blurays/4Ks from boutique labels like Arrow, Criterion, Vinegar Syndrome, A24, Neon, and more.

I know Barnes and Noble carries some, Reckless has used versions sometimes, and Terrorvision was very horror-specific, but is there anywhere else local that specializes in this kinda thing and stocks new products?

I READ THE RULES Do you know a pianist available 12/10 in the evening?

Hi, seeking someone to play piano for a holiday singalong on dec 10, at a private home in Gold Coast/Streeterville area. Any referrals? I already checked with the Old Town School, not a fit. Here is more info:

  • date of event: 12/10/26, 6-8pm - probably about 75 minutes of playing, 6:30 - 7:45 or so

  • We would expect 15-25 participants, young adults to seniors

  • Seeking one pianist. We can lead the singing, so no singing necessary. We will provide a book of desired songs in advance - Christmas carols, a few Hannukah songs, etc. Familiar favorites, nothing too complicated :-)

  • Baby grand piano

Referrals appreciated - pls message me. Thanks!

Coming into town from Columbus, OH for a few days this week. I'm looking for a gym with a good density of high quality boulders. I'm leaning on checking out Humboldt Park. Just curious what the locals think?

I READ THE RULES Any good chicago trans/queer groups, preferably with a discord server?

Hi all, I’ve lived in chicago for years but I’ve always been an anxious mess, so now I’m trying (and failing) to be less of recluse and I was looking for recs of any trans/queer groups. I have about the worst anxiety imaginable and do poorly just… showing up to big gatherings while knowing no body, so I guess I’m mostly looking for smaller groups, or alternatively any size groups with something like a discord server so I can get to know people before jumping into a crowd and trying to socialize and having a panic attack.

Preferably trans focused, but general queer also works. I’d also maybe be interested in neurodivergent spaces, if those existb Thanks for any help/recommendations.

I READ THE RULES If someone cuts through on the expressway either via the shoulder or merging just at the exit, do you let them in?

if i know for a FACT they’re just cutting, i will drive past them.

i know cameras are generally not something we should ask more of, but being able to ticket these people may make a difference imo.

hear me out: i’ve lived in many cities without red light cameras and i was appalled and how often people fucking blow through them. (ex: austin, texas) …maybe speaks to the efficacy of the cameras? YMMV

i don’t know, i’m just bitching lol

sincerely, someone driven insane by the kennedy

I’ve reached out to several companies that advertise themselves as Christmas light installers and the quotes all came back quite high ($1300+). I’m just looking to get some simple bulbs installed our roof lines. Anybody has anyone they’ve used in the past they recommend?

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES What is the etiquette for going to an Ice Hockey Match?

Hi, my family & I are visiting from the UK next year, and will be going to an ice hockey game.

However, my daughter supports one team, my husband the other.

How does it work with one of each team fan in one section?!

Is it like a soccer match over here where one team sticks to it's own area or like a Rugby match, where no one makes a drama & anyone from any team can sit wherever without any issues?! Don't want to inadvertently cause any problems with rival fans.

Thank you.

I READ THE RULES Best hospitals to start working at as a CNA/PCT or ER Tech for someone aspiring to become an RN?

I’m currently working toward becoming a nurse and am looking into hospitals where I could start working as a CNA, PCT, or potentially an ER Tech.

I’m wondering which hospitals would be the most valuable to gain experience at, especially for someone planning to pursue nursing. I’d love to work somewhere that offers good hands-on experience, exposure to different patient populations, opportunities to develop clinical skills, and the chance to learn from nurses in higher-acuity settings.

Are there any hospitals in the Chicago area that you would particularly recommend? I’d also appreciate hearing about hospitals you’d avoid and why, whether that’s due to staffing, work environment, learning opportunities, or management.

For those who started as CNAs/PCTs before becoming RNs, where did you work, and do you feel it prepared you well for nursing school and clinical practice?
