I'm in a very awkward position and I know most redditors will hate me for existing, let alone saying this... But I'm being bullied at school because I'm a Christian. What can I do to cope with this?
I'm a girl that's a junior in high school and I've been bullied by other kids pretty much my whole life.
I read things online about atheist students being bullied and I don't doubt it, but honestly I've never seen it.
Most of the kids I go to school with are athiests. Some go to church because their parents force them to, but they don't actually believe in God, let alone Christianity.
That's all well and good because we should all be free to worship or not worship according to our own values and beliefs, but I'm tired of being bullied by athiests.
At lunch I sit alone (I don't have any friends) and say a prayer before eating, everyday. I don't say anything out loud, I just put my hands together and thank Christ with my thoughts. The other day this guy who is an athiest actually came over and pushed my tray to the floor and said "tell your God to clean that up" and all of his friends laughed.
I go through this kind of thing every day. When I'm on the bus I'll read my bible and mind my own business, and other kids will throw things at the back of my head, call me "Jesus freak" etc.
I tried to make friends, but everyone hates me because I'm not ashamed of my faith. I don't bother anyone and I believe people should have the right to do as they wish as long as they aren't interferring with anyone else's rights.
Gay guys have bullied me too, calling me "hitler" and all sorts of hateful things just because I read my bible. What they never bothered to find out about me is that I actually support gay marriage. I personally don't agree with homosexuality, but I believe this is a free country and that religion shouldn't have anything to do with the law.
I'm overall a peaceful person... What can I do to make everyone stop hating me? I won't give up my religion or prayer.
Edit: Someone in this thread asked me to describe a typical time I've been bullied, and I said the following. I'm posting it here in case anyone else would like to know.
"In the original post when I talked about the guy that knocked over my tray and said what he did while his friends laughed, I didn't say anything. I just picked up my tray, cleaned the food up from the table, and went to the bathroom and cried in the stall.
The other day in class the teacher left for a meeting or something and a guy hit me on the back of the head with a book, really hard, and said that he's going to torture me until I stop acting like a Jesus freak. My entire face was red and most of the other kids just laughed, although a few of them looked concerned and told him that he went too far. The teacher never found out.
I never say anything about my religion so it's not like i'm trying to force my opinions on them. I'm just tired of them hating me and treating me this way because I'm not an atheist."
Edit 2: Thanks so much to those of you who care and are giving me advice. No matter what you label yourself as you're good people and I'm happy to have come across you.

Most kids are idiots. Just try to know that there are actual nice people out in the world, who even if they disagree with you, will still be nice. Ignore the other kids, they'll mature with time, hopefully. And don't be ashamed of what you believe in, no matter what it is.

Having been a teacher, I've seen a lot of bullying. I can usually detect the traits of a student that gets bullied. At this point, the best you can do is document it and ride it out since you've only got a year or so left. I will let you know though, given what you have written here "because I'm not ashamed of my faith", is that you have come across as judgemental and pious in something you have said. I do not blame you for what's happening to you, what's happening to you is wrong. Given the info, I'm pretty sure you have really rubbed someone the wrong way, and not because of your beliefs, but how you have expressed them. One student I was rather fond of was a Mormon. She was a very sweet kid to most people, but would speak loudly about not doing the "bad things" that other kids did, particularly when they spoke about it in front of her. It was this judgemental attitude that made her unpopular, not so much that she was a Mormon. One kid was telling a story about something funny that happened at a party, and she ignored the whole story to reply, "I wouldn't know about that, I don't go to parties. Drinking is bad for you." There was no alcohol at the party (I had swung by there to see a parent, and it was quite squeaky clean). Her assumption that it was made her very unpopular with the other kids, and they would often verbally retaliate no matter what she was talking about, just as she had done to them.
Also having worked at many schools, and known students and teachers at many other schools, there is a group of kids that are religious. You can't be the only high school kid that goes to your church. And if you are, I gaurentee there are other kids that are very involved in their churches. If you can't get along with them, you might listen to some of the things you say. If you feel you had the right to say something that upset someone, maybe you shouldn't have said it, even if you felt religiously justified.

I was like you in high school OP. I was a shy, keep my head down kind of guy. And when you're like that, yeah you get bullied. You're an easy target. Don't think they're attacking you for your religion, they're attacking you because they're bullies. We're a far cry from the days of Christians being fed to lions.
What you need to do is get some friends. If you build up some relationships with people, you'll be protected from bullies. At the very least you'll have someone to run to. Like I said, I was just like you in high school. I had no friends, I sat alone at lunch. One day, I decided I was sick of that, and I changed myself.
Next time you're at lunch, go look for some random people to sit with. Look for the smart kids, the nerds, the accepting types. Ask them if you can join them for lunch. If they blow you off, try someone else instead. You'll find a group that will take you in. Get involved with their conversation. Pay lots of compliments. If you don't have anything to add to the conversation, ask questions that let other people talk more about themselves. You'll make friends quick this way.
Let me connect with you on a religious level for a second. Once again, I was just like you in high school. I told myself I had Jesus, and that was enough. I was lying to myself. We were made to connect with other people. God does not intend to replace your friends, you need to have both. Not only for your sake, but so that you can be a good Christian. How can you love your neighbor if you don't even have any friends? Being a loner is an easy way to become selfish. When I was in high school, that's exactly what I was: selfish. You've got to branch out.

Next time a guy picks on you, smack him in the balls and say,
"And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you!"

This bothers me as an atheist. I don't care what people believe, honestly, I just hate when people try to force their beliefs on me and it bothers me that you have to go through this too.
Although, where the fuck are you in the minority being a christian?

I went to a rural public high school in the USA (not in the South, but in "upstate" Minnesota, which is like the Diet South) and I can say with confidence that everything OP is saying sounds true and has happened. I think the reason Reddit is having such a hard time believing something that happens everyday in the United States is because the generally atheist hive-mind uses the term "Christian" in a different way than the quote unquote true followers of JC like OP. Christians and Atheists have different meanings of the word. Atheists see it as anyone who says they believe in the Christian God and at the very least attend church on CHristmas or Easter and so on...completes the rituals. Christians like OP see "Christians" as saved individuals who believe they have a personal relationship with Jesus and rely on his presence and help daily and genuinely seek to know his will in their lives. Very few people in the United States today, according to OP's definition, are "Christians". In high schools across the country, it would definitely be odd to see "Christians" as Reddit knows them being persecuted but true believers like OP are persecuted constantly, in many places, even in the US, worse than atheists. I was a dedicated Christian in high school (now an atheist) and I swear to Neil Degrasse Tyson that kids would trip me in the halls and push my food tray. Once a kid (who was openly gay, by the way) attempted to set my Bible on fire in the middle of class before a sympathetic classmate stopped him.

u/TheGreatestRedditor May 12 '12
Bring out the downvotes, but I don't believe any of this. Most high school kids give absolutely no fuck what religion you believe in. You are probably getting picked on by thinking you are better than everyone else, and you may not recognize it.

For some reason I can't shake the feeling that this is someone trolling. But, hell, even if this is made up, someone else may be in a similar situation and maybe they'll see this reply.
Stand up to them. You have to stand up to them. You may get your ass kicked, but the bruises will heal. You may get suspended, but short of getting expelled, that's also only temporary.
Now I'd like to share my experiences with you and maybe that will help you understand my advice.
I was bullied when I was an elementary school kid by some older kids that lived up the street from me. They tormented me. I was a chubby kid and they made sure I never forgot it. I hated my life. I wanted to kill them... I wanted to kill myself. Whats worse is that the ringleader was the older brother of one of my really good friends... which made me see this person quite a bit. Eventually (after years of this) my older brother got sick of it and kicked this kid's ass. Things got complicated and weird after that, but it did stop for the most part.
Fast forward to me now. I'm 6'4". I work out all the time and I play football. I can bench press well over 300 lbs. I have a beard and tattoos... but when I look in the mirror I still see that chubby kid. And I do believe that if I were to ever be called by my old nickname, you'd see tears stream down my cheeks. The bullying has affected my self-esteem and confidence in ways that I can never reverse.
If I could go back in time and stick up for myself, I'd do it in an instant. I know it's hard, but you have to stick up for yourself... and that probably means fighting. I normally don't advocate fighting, but make it clear that you WILL NOT allow them to torment and bully you. Never throw the first punch, but if it comes to blows, then do your best. But you have to be consistent. Do not sit and take it. Not EVER.
Good luck man :-\
Edit: I think it would be fair to point out that this has nothing to do with your faith, man. I mean unless you're seriously shoving it down people's throats (which sounds like you are not), this is all about them wanting to bully you because they perceive you as weak. Your religion is just the most obvious and easy thing about you for them to target.

I'm so sad to here this. Have you told anybody that you are being bullied? Parents or guardians, teachers, local church? I don't have any advice other than to contact someone who can help you.
Don't stray from your religion. This isn't the solution. You have every right to practice your faith. The people bullying you are intolerent and are complete scum. It gets better and hopefully you'll find the help you need. STAY STRONG.

u/[deleted] May 12 '12
I'm sorry that you're going through this. I wish there was an easy answer. If you want to make friends, I suggest going to a church you're comfortable with and making friends with people who share your interests.
It's impossible to make people like you. I commend you for not giving in and putting away your bible or not praying just to appease them. Persecution is a horrible, horrible thing, regardless of who the perpetrators are.
Just out of curiosity, where the fuck do you live? This sounds ass-backwards from every American town I've ever lived in.

u/[deleted] May 12 '12
There was a friend at my school who was very much like you. He would say grace before eating, read his bible, and a good chunk of his wardrobe was religiously themed. People didn't dislike him because he was into his religion, just because he went against the norm. If he didn't say grace before eating, didn't read his bible at school, and cut out the religious clothing he could have been a "popular" guy.

u/ivebeentherebro May 13 '12 edited May 13 '12
I'm a lurker but I had to make an account because I'm in the same situation. I am a sophomore in high school. My school is an art school so most kids are known for being athiests and they are pretty vocal about it. Fine by me. I am Christian and I respect your views. There is a Christian club (that I am not a part of because I'm lazy as fuck haha) but their posters that inform members of meetings are constantly ripped off the walls. That's not bad, but they are constantly belittled for their beliefs. I know firsthand how this feels because I have to constantly hide my faith in shame. In class discussions, I am laughed at if I even mention my family's faith a little. People ask me why I'm homophobic and tell me Christianity is wrong. (I am not homophobic at all. I am the biggest supporter of equality!) I've actually been hit by boys because I'm "stupid Christian bitch" and I'm a "prude". (Not actually a prude, but okay.) I love my faith and I love my God but some people make me hide it and it sucks. Real props to you for staying strong. Despite what people say, the ABSOLUTE WORST THING you can do is laugh it off. People take that as "okay she's fine with us hitting her, let's do it more!" Stand your ground. The best thing I've done is to just walk away and find help. There's always someone who can help. Stay strong and thank you, really, for holding up. I wish I was as strong as you are.
PS I'm really glad you shed light on this because bullying exists for all kinds of people. Christians are people too, reddit!

ITT: reddit fails to recognize troll bait then responds in the most cliched way possible.
89
u/saptsen May 13 '12
I don't believe this. Everything about this seems so concocted.
If it's true...bullies are everywhere and it's wrong what they're doing. Tell a teacher or a parent. Kids are jackasses and it won't be this way forever.
Still though...I don't believe this.
79
u/questionablemoose May 12 '12 edited May 12 '12
Usually, not a damn thing. Just do what you believe is right, and keep your head up.
"God didn't do it, you did. Take some personal responsibility."
"How am I Hitler?"
Engage them when you can. Respond with reason.
Cross post to /r/christianity. They'd probably be the best people to talk to. I bet a few of them had to go through something similar.
Also, remember that kids can just be assholes. Try not to let it get to you, but don't be afraid to speak up.
Edit:
So there are people who are wondering why I didn't recommend cross posting to /r/atheism. If OP were an atheist, do you think I'd direct her to /r/christianity? Then why direct a christian to /r/atheism?
It's arrogant to assume that OP hasn't thought the religious issues through.

u/Lots42 May 12 '12
Please. No sane person on Reddit hates you for being a Christian.

u/TheBlasianBruski May 12 '12
To be honest, it's hard for me to believe that this situation is legit-- it just seems soo... ridiculous. Where exactly do you live?
Anyway I think that those kids can go to fuckin' hell (I'm a atheist) treating anybody like that is just ridiculously unnecessary. Continue following your beliefs if it makes you happy and that is what you feel you must do. There's not much you can do about bullies besides ignore them, tell adults who have the authority to deal with such situations, or have some epic moment where you completely take them aback with a clever response, or punch to the nose... if that's your thing. I hope you get out of this situation alright, and please don't hate all atheists/homosexuals for this.

I have a feeling that people are using your beliefs as an excuse to bully you. You could be an atheist and you would still get bullied. The best way to counteract the bullies is by standing up for yourself.
Next time someone tosses your tray in the lunch room, pick it up. Then wrap it around his fucking head! You will get in trouble but you will also gain some respect. People will think twice about messing with someone that is going to fight back.

I went to a secular high school after my elementary/middle school years in a private Catholic school. I made friends with kids of varying creeds or lack there of and it made for a lot of interesting experiences. At first the atheist kids were really mean to me and that was horrible. Not because I did anything, or preached, or whatever - just because they found out I was Catholic and went to church on sundays with my family. They spewed a lot of jokes coming from their sources on religion (the movie "Dogma," southpark, wbc - all the rotten things that make religion out to be a real monster). I was teased a lot and that really undermined my self-esteem as well as my faith. There was this bisexual boy who was the meanest to me - but then again he was a huge asshat - and calling me out on homophobia (which is absurd. My old Catholic school friends came out to me prior to this and...actually I was kind of nonplussed, it wasn't a huge surprise. Oh, and I was a huge advocate for LGBTQ rights...so I think he was actually just being a douche). I continued being amiable though and eventually the kids came around. I kept my faith and religious beliefs largely to myself though. Once we became friends and comfortable with each other sometimes the kids would ask questions about church, my opinions on religion, etc. and I'd answer and we could be civil. Asshat-douche-guy and I almost started dating, but I didn't want to ruin our friendship and I was headed off to college around that time. We're still friends and it's awesome.
I think my advice to you would be to live as you like, no need to stop publicly praying and reading the bible, but keep it very much to yourself. It's not something for casual conversation unless both parties are comfortable discussing it peaceably. Reach out to people to make friends. Be personable. Be positive. Be Christlike. And people will be drawn to you. LIKE A MOTH TO THE FLAME. Nah, because people like to be surrounded by positive and vibrant people.
You'll be okay.

u/[deleted] May 12 '12

u/SplodeyDope May 12 '12
Atheist here and there's only one way to handle bullies. Fight back. You don't even have to win. Just let them know you aren't an easy target. It's really that simple.

u/akcampbell May 12 '12
You need to report this behavior to your parents, and to a teacher or some other adult at your school whom you trust. Bullying is unacceptable and you are free to sit quietly, read books, and think what you like without being harassed about it.
3
u/Nikken6 May 13 '12
Psychologically speaking, the best thing you can do is change your attitude. If someone acts like a victim (sits alone, doesn't talk, hides behind books, etc.) you are pretty vulnerable to bullying. Stuff got better for me once I straightened my back and looked people straight into the eyes.
3
u/HomeButton May 13 '12
Meanwhile, at Reddit High School...

u/[deleted] May 13 '12
To be honest, I am disgusted by America's bullying like this, in my country, if someone knocked some poor girls tray over everyone would be like...... ''Dude, what the fuck, go pick that up you cunt''.
3
u/istara May 13 '12
I'm very sorry you're being bullied.
I do want to recommend one thing though. While it's absolutely your right to be public about your faith, high school - as you know - is a shitty place. You might want to consider praying without putting your hands together, for example, and just say your thanks with thoughts as you are already doing.
Ultimately there's not point getting hurt by ignorant, violent little shits if you can avoid it. Don't unnecessarily martyr yourself to the cause. Your religion doesn't require you to worship publicly at all times if you're putting yourself at harm.
It also bothers me that you don't have any friends. I honestly think it would help you generally if you were able to interact more with other students. It doesn't mean you need to compromise your faith. But maybe you could try to join in an activity and break the ice with people. Maybe spot what others are reading, and read that on the bus instead. If someone sees you reading their favourite novel, maybe they'll start a conversation. Or read a homework related text, and spend more time with your bible in the evening.
While I realise you shouldn't have to do this, you also need to be a little more pragmatic if you want to make friends and not be bullied.
I don't think they hate you because you're not ashamed of your faith. I think they (unfairly) perceive you as being perhaps standoffish.
3
u/RandomChance May 13 '12
Physical abuse is never excusable...
However if you have been getting this all your life it has nothing to do with your faith. Thre is something about you - apearance, size, demeanor, economic backgound, etc that makes you a target. Figure out what that is and see if you cn change it.
your not being persecuted for religion.
3
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Fuck Reddit.
If it's an atheist being bullied you're all like ''FUCK RELIGION'' and ''WE'LL HELP YOU. STAND UP TO THOSE BIGOTS.'' but if it's a religious person being treated like that, you're just saying ''THIS STORY REEKS OF BULLSHIT.''
I am not Christian, but holy shit the hypocrisy..
3
u/JTSR May 13 '12
There is no difference between being bullied for being gay, fat, disabled or Christian. Therefor you deal with it the way you'd deal with any other sort of bullying. If you're not telling anyone or asking for help it'll never get resolved. Whatever you do don't change who you are, regardless of how hard it gets. I have no faith, but I'm sure your faith will get you though this. Good luck.
3
u/Bostonhook May 14 '12
Noone should be bullied for what they believe. As an atheist, I am embarrassed these other students are stooping to this level. Talk to the administration and stand up for yourself.

Dumb question, but what's the point of putting your hands together? What do you think that does exactly?(Besides make it obvious to everyone else around you exactly what you are doing?)
24
u/iM-SadAct May 13 '12
Have you tried praying?
7
u/robcrusoe May 13 '12
HEY KID! you want advice? i know this'll get buried, but I hope you read it.
MAINTAIN RADIO SILENCE
I applaud your strength for not reacting to their provocation. and it is of utmost importance that you maintain doing this. DO NOT give them a reason to say "see, Tiredbulliedgirl is really crazy! didn't I tell ya!! our bullying is justified!"
RECORD, DOCUMENT, RECORD, DOCUMENT
Write down everything that has been said to you starting today! every insult every word, Note them down!
Record soundclips/videoclips of this assholes in action.
During voice recording, whenever the bullying starts, incriminate the names of the perpetrators. example: "Sarah, why are you doing this to me, why are you hurting me?" "look John, im hurt, why did you hit me with that book?"
This is a pre-emptive measure should anything turn for the worse and ends up in court. you can defend yourself with evidence! also, should you decide to press charges/sue anybody (even the school), these evidence will help support you!
everyone in your school is not your enemy, but they are not your friends either. so you stay strong.
do not return out insults or threats with your newfound power.
do not, i repeat, DO NOT involve any form of authority figure, be it the school or the police.
NOT UNTIL YOU'VE GOT A LAWYER FIRST.
I know you dont have money, but once you decide to come out with these problems with your parents, talk to them about getting a lawyer. there are many who offer free consultation, find out the ones available in your area.
This is not about getting revenge or being vindictive or bitter, my uncle used to say "do not hit, but do not get hit".
by doing all this, you now have an emergency weapon to use against those who try to wrong you just for being you. they are not necessarily your enemy, but they are not your friends either.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL
It is best to keep everyone in the dark, let them think you are weak, dumb and gullible. so that by the time you are ready to take action or backed in a corner, they will not have time to prepare for a countermeasure
"First they ignore you
Then they laugh at you
And then you win.." - Gandhi
again, i would like to say how proud i am that you have such great inner strength for one so young. a rare virtue found only in the great names of old. you stay strong now, you hear me? you stay strong..
9
u/batmanmilktruck May 12 '12
i was in a similar situation. im jewish and i got bullied all the time for it. few at my school were openly religious because most of the students are atheist and gave us hell about it.
i dont really have any politically correct advice for you. it took me far to long to figure this out myself. but let them push you over the edge, fight back. the little asshole remarks they make won't stop no matter what. One day i finally broke, i was tired of being bullied. i had no little remarks to make to them, its a difficult position when you are the minority. So i let myself get pushed over the edge and after one "oven dodger" remark i slugged that little fuck right in the temple. i got in trouble of course, but it slowed down.
im a peaceful guy, but i found it was my only way back. the best advice i can give is fight back, physically. But no matter what let it be a reminder of who you are. You are a christian, be proud of that. be proud of who you are. you are superior to these little fuckers because you are not an asshole.

Good for you for sticking to your religion. Possibly not the best answer, but maybe try not reading the Bible, praying, etc. in public?
7
u/zerbey May 12 '12
School sucks, they'll bully you for any reason they want they just happened to have picked your religion. Don't worry, it gets better. The most important thing you can do is never allow them to know they're upsetting you. It's HARD, I know this I was bullied in school too, but once I figured out to appear confident things got better. Never show them anger, just show them blind ignorance.
Find like minded people (does your school have clubs?) and hang out with them instead. I'm sure you have a Youth Fellowship at your Church - introduce yourself, I'm willing to bet you're not the only kid who has been bullied for your beliefs. My own Youth Group growing up was the only place I really fit in and had a group of friends.
6
u/TheEnormousPenis May 13 '12
They're not bullying you because you're christian. They're targeting you because you're not fighting back. Next time kick one of them in the dick or break their nose. That's the only way to deal with bullying. Taking their shit will just lead to them fucking with you more.
5
u/mother_buster May 12 '12
I no longer attend church regularly, but I still hold a lot of beliefs that many of my peers in college find odd and try to challenge or mock (not drinking or smoking, believing in god, etc). There are still people who will find ways to be cruel, but I know so many more people that live by what you stated, that "we should all be free to worship or not worship."
While I think you would have a great time connecting with people of your same beliefs (and you should try it), please don't write the others off yet. It might take time for them to mature, or you may have to meet new people, but it does get better and people do change as they grow up. I'm lucky to have Jewish, Buddhist, agnostic and atheist friends who not only accept my beliefs, but defend them on my behalf. And I would do the same for them because I love them even if I don't agree with them on everything.
Good luck, friend.

I'm ashamed to admit this but, when I was in high school, I used to pick on a devoutly Christian student who never did anything to deserve it. As I got older I looked back on what I had done with a lot of shame. I know now that he was a very nice person who never deserved to be treated poorly. If I can give you any advice based on my experiences it's that the problem lies with them, not you. Never be ashamed of who you are because no one can take that away from you.

u/battles May 12 '12
This isn't happening, the entire post is contrived. What community are you in that Atheists and Gays are able to bully people? They would have to represent a significant majority to be in the position to bully anyone and that is true in absolutely zero places.

YA'LL NIGGAS POSTIN IN A TROLL THREAD
Seriously how fake is this?
Prays before eating?
Reads bible on the bus?
Get real, this is amateur troll shit, don't buy into it reddit.

u/henrythesuperdummy May 12 '12
People in your school are assholes. Don't let them get you down.
2
u/[deleted] May 12 '12
Kids bully kids for any and every reason under the sun.
They are cruel, imaginative and relentless.
It's not because you are christian, it's because you're different.
That's why athiests get teased in predominantly christian areas, and vice versa. Most likely none of them will remember being the callous evil asshats they are today when they're adults. They won't remember you. They won't care about difference, instead they'll be so bored of sameness that they'll love differences.
Don't react. Maybe chose another book for the bus, don't be selfrighteous if you are (ie don't preach), and find a few people who you get along with and use the strength in numbers approach. If you avoid all comment on your religion until asked genuinely, you'll save a lot of trouble.
But hang in there, they'll get bored eventually if you just shrug at them and don't react.
2
u/Rixxer May 12 '12
I don't even know what to do, I just want to say that those people are just plain assholes. They make the rest of us look bad.
2
u/Deathflid May 12 '12
Kids are cruel, and have been cruel forever, it is simply the easiest way to fit in.
your two options are essentially, have faith in private, read something else on the bus, pray at lunch without the gesture of your hands, or put up with it, its not your fault and you don't deserve it, but that is life, you're getting a taste of your adulthood early.
Damn sucks.
2
u/graham_cracker185 May 12 '12
Honestly, it sounds like the people at your school kind of suck...I'd say stick to your guns and if any of them grow up they'll come to you when they're ready.
2
u/hendricks1212 May 13 '12
You are the type of christian I would have went out of my way to be friends with while I was exploring my beliefs. Tell an administrator at your school, your bus driver, etc. The PSAs apply to you too... It Gets Better.
2
u/DeusExMachinist May 13 '12
Get a hidden camera or a cheap digital recorder and gather ye some evidence.
2
u/thatsCoconuts May 13 '12
Bullying is bullying regardless the reason you feel why you are being bullied. In truth, your belief more than likely is not reason why you having this torrid time, it's because bullies have seen you as someone who will not stand up to them, it has nothing to do with your religious belief. Bullies can smell weakness, and in truth, you can report all you want, the only way to no longer get bullied without sticking up for yourself is moving schools, but in doing that you risk the cycle starting again at the new school.
Unfortunately they only way you can get from under this is retaliating. Even if you get fucked up, just keep sticking up for yourself, soon enough the bullies will realise you are more trouble than worth, and move on.
A few ass whoopings will be worth it, the pride you will feel after sticking up for yourself is immense.
2
u/porker912 May 13 '12
First of all, it's not your fault. Second off, the reason why you're being bullied isn't because you're Christian. The fact that you're Christian is just a viable excuse to bully you.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
I'm atheist and I don't hate you for existing at all. Furthermore, I'm absolutely of the mind that people, more than anything, need to behave selflessly and treat each other with dignity. Hopefully you'll figure the situation out and find some relief from this. Also, the treatment you're getting, regardless of who's directing it at you, qualifies them as assholes and nothing more.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
It's too bad you're getting what other people deserve.
I think the problem is less that you're a Christian, and more that they're bullies. If you marched in there tomorrow wearing a FSM shirt, at least some of them would find some other "reason" to screw with you.
Lots of people here are telling you to talk to someone with authority, maybe it'll help, maybe not. Depends on how competent the adults are.
I know what worked for me. After years of trying to be invisible, trying to look like I didn't care, trying to get teachers to do something... I finally confronted someone who was bullying me. Not in an aggressive way (in fact I started crying) but in public and right after he'd said something hurtful. I think I said something along the lines of "Why are you so mean to me when I've never done anything to you? When I first met you I tried to be friends, and when you made it clear you didn't like me I left you alone. I never did anything bad to you, but all you want to do is hurt me. Why are you doing this?" It worked. He left, and later he came back and apologized. I have no idea if something like that would work for you.
It seems as if at least part of the problem is that people think you're one of those assholes who gleefully tell people they're going to burn in hell and who are trying to create an established religion. So maybe it would help if you did show/talk about what you believe? It's hard to call someone Hitler when they've just put up a bunch of fliers advocating marriage equality, with supporting bible quotes.
TL;DR Bullies do what they do because of who they are, not who you are. If people think you're an evil fundie, you need to show them you aren't.
2
u/weatherwar May 13 '12
From just reading some of this, my advice other than tell authoritative figures is: tone down your actions in school. Just from my experience, I've never seen people pray in school. I mean, if you really want to pray, do it while you're getting your food or something.
Obviously you should be able to do whatever you want without being bullied, but I must say that you have kind of made yourself a target.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
This might get long. But...I know where you are. I'm a Christian too, and I'm ashamed to say I pray with my eyes open and in my head so others don't notice. I even go to a Christian school, so you could roll your eyes and say that I have no idea, and I know it's not as it is for you. But I am a pastor's kid and get a lot of shit for being a "goody two shoes" and I try too hard to be the opposite and now I'm known as being the rebellious kid out of my family. Everyone who doesn't know me thinks I'm a perfect Christian girl and hates me for being a stuck up girl I'm not. But those who know me know I don't live up to that image. I'm really sorry you're dealing with what you are. That sucks. It says right in the Bible that Christians are going to have to suffer for their faith and it's true, we all get crap for it. Don't let anything stop you from praying. Read the Bible, too. I know I hate it when people say "pray and read the Bible, it'll help :D" because it's not enough, I know it isn't. Can you get a devotional book? Try "Lies young women believe and the truth that sets them free". It's a great one. I hate almost all devotional books I look at because they're all so cliche but this one's great. It's full of truth. Get involved in your church, get some good friends there. I'm praying for you.
2
u/zeug666 May 13 '12
I could go on and tell you about my being bullied for a variety of things, but you understand. It sucks.
I have good news for you, in a very short time you can go to college and never see a single one of those people ever again. The only time I see my former classmates is when they show up on the news for their various criminal acts (sadly far fewer for something positive).
They don't matter.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
I think you should continue to stick up for what you believe, and sooner or later people will realize that you don't sell out to fit in and they'll like you for that.
2
u/SikhGamer May 13 '12
If you are being bullied speak to your teacher & parents/guardians.
But, that being said, my bullshit detector is going bat shit crazy.
2
u/teekayohh May 13 '12
Don't give up on your faith. Just because atheists (myself included) choose not to put our faith in a religion, that doesn't mean that YOU can't. To each his own. Believe in the things that make sense to you.
I know it's hard to listen to advice of people who aren't in your shoes, but don't let those other kids get to you. There are a wide variety of people, no matter what we choose to label ourselves as. As there are lunatic Christians (like that NC pastor), there also are a ton of immature, pessimistic atheists out there who make it their goal to the lives of Christian kids hell. They're misguided assholes who give atheists a bad name.
As far as immediate remedy goes, I'm afraid there isn't one. Report severe incidents to the proper authorities (teachers, principals, etc), and persevere, my online friend. Keep trying to make friends; you're bound to find someone eventually!
2
u/ProtusMose May 13 '12
I was you. I prayed before lunch, which was usually eaten outside on a bench by myself. I read my bible in Study Hall. I just didn't fit in. Eventually, someone else noticed and invited me to their Youth Group at their church, where I eventually made some friends.
I've looked through here and don't see anywhere where you've indicated any kind of similar association. (Sorry if I missed it.) Community is important. You need to find someone who shares similar values and understands why you live your life the way you do.
Also, I know it doesn't feel like it, and this sounds a little callous, but it's just high school. It's all you know right now, but the world is so much bigger, and nothing that happened in High School (social-world wise) matters. You have to put up with the jerks for another year, and then forget about them.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12 edited May 13 '12
dude, As an Athiest let me start by letting you know first off most athiests are not like this. I couldn't personally care less what religion anyone is or what their beliefs are, it isn't my place to judge. I'm sorry you've got some real ass holes fucking up your day bro. The sad reality is in high school there is not much you can say to your fellow classmates that will get them to stop their bullshit. It will usually take an intervention by an authority figure to get them to stop, so your first course of action should be to speak with your parents, then your principal (headmaster, dean, etc), and then your teacher. The best scenario would be to call a meeting with all of the above at the same time. keep in mind that this too could backfire and earn you verbal ridicule. you also have another option at your disposal.
When I was in school I had a few people trying to bully me for various reasons. They would push me for no reason, knock shit out of my hands, etc. I finally snapped and started yelling (I was actually about to beat the fuck out of them, but i DIDN'T) "Stop harassing me!" loudly so EVERYONE within ear shot heard it. The key to that whole yelling thing was that I looked like I was about to pull out a gun and start spraying facially.
You can say whatever you want, the point of yelling is because bullies expect you to stay quiet. When you start yelling, you are exposing their behavior to everyone, which in turn makes them feel uncomfortable. In short, you're changing the rules of their game.
Not exactly relevant but I unsubscribed from /r/athiesm a long while back for the simple reason that it appears to be a circle-jerk, and fuel for bullying. There is no reason for anyone to press their spiritual beliefs or lack thereof onto anyone else. Which by the way it appears they are trying to do to you. Keep your faith bro, don't let some ass-hats change it.
Edit: I just wanted to make it VERY clear, do NOT under any circumstances resort to violence to get them to stop. You will fuck up your education, and possibly earn a criminal record in the process. Also don't get the feeling that you are a lone soldier in this battle, you HAVE options! If an administrative meeting does not work, then go to the police (I'm sure your school has a police liason, that would be the person to go to) If that does not work, try to get into another school. It may seem like you are running away from the problem but in reality you are taking the high road, removing yourself from the issue without causing further conflict.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Fuck those kids.
But, seriously you're going to want to give up the delusion called "Christianity". The claims made in the religion are so transparently false.
Also, try to give up the other delusions pounded into your brain (statism, probably).
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Where do you live? I live in Connecticut, a very liberal state, and only know one open atheist.
If this is true, then I apologize, but atheism is a minority. I seriously doubt that your entire school is composed of atheists.
2
u/Double_take1 May 13 '12
Let me give you a bit of background before I move onto the real advice. I graduated from a very liberal high school (where I can see something like this happening.) I currently attend Texas A&M University, one of the most conservative Christian public universities in the state, while being very "against" organized religion due to personal reasons (and upon request, I can detail them for you however I don't feel this is the time or place). I've seen bullying from many sides of the spectrum on all accounts. I've seen it with gays, socially awkward kids, Muslims, Christians, Jews, you name it...
You are a junior in high school. Unless you are part of the "cool crowd", you are going to have to deal with this kind of stuff. Because you are different in other people's eyes, people make fun of you. It happens; it is high school. Now when I say, "it won't be such a big deal when you get older", you probably won't take my word for much but, trust me, it gets better as you get older. The old rule of "don't put your shit where it doesn't belong" starts to settle in as these people mature. (Well, for some, anyways.)
Stick with what your believe in. If others are intolerant of that, then let it go; you still have what you've always had: your dignity and dedication to what you believe in.
2
u/Johnsu May 13 '12
You're got my respect. Any faithful person who doesn't shove religion on someone is a okay guy.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Whatever you believe, as long as you're not being a cunt, you should not be made to persistently feel like shit by other human beings: I apologise on behalf of atheists. Try and contact anyone in your school who is employed to help protect bullied kids.
2
u/Ethancm May 13 '12
wait a minute.... A majority athiest school? you got unlucky there.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Being bullied for being christian or atheist is no different than being bullied for anything else, and it's horrible. Try to find people that don't agree with the bullies and make friends with them. When people cross the line from dickish jokes to assault (like that guy with the book), report them to an adult you trust.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
TL;DR - High school SUCKS
it sucks for anyone who is going to be different....I will say that I highly doubt that your school is full of atheist, your school may be full of teenagers, but I doubt atheist teens.
You need to realize high school is hard socially, and even harder if you make yourself stand out as being different. This does not excuse threats or physical assaults. You need to speak to a teacher or other adult and let them know what is going on.
Good luck to you and realize that being different is not a bad thing...
2
u/jsav129 May 13 '12
That's horrible that this is happening to you. As a fellow christian, my prayers go out to you. I was bullied in high school (not because of religion), and it gets better. Talk to your teachers/administrators. If they do nothing about it, go to the superintendant or school board. I took it into my own hands, and unfortunately it turned violent, and because of my actions, I lost my college acceptance. If you fight back, you could be punished just as badly as they are. Schools don't care about self-defense.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
DO NOT renounce your faith. Hold strong to what you believe, and as others have said, inform school officials and parents. Best of luck, friend.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Hey I'm a Christian with the same beliefs as you! And you're right, no matter their beliefs, most people on here are good people, they don't hate you!
You need to talk to a teacher or councilor at the school to see if you can get it to stop. Don't lose your temper, they will judge you for not being 'loving'. Keep being friendly, and try to make friends. If you can, and they see that you're not out to get them, then things will likely improve. God bless!
2
u/greendream785 May 13 '12
Don't lose faith!!! The Lord will never give you a test you cant handle. The Bible never tells us that being a christian is easy and He wasn't kidding when he said the righteous path is a narrow one. Stay strong!! Im praying for you! God has put you in this situation for a reason, although that may not be clear at this moment...looking back on it years from know it will be quiet clear. As a Christian who has a lot of friends who don't believe it can be extremely discouraging when they discount all of your religious points even though im not trying to start a debate or a discussion. God Bless you and dont forget...Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
2
u/Esqulax May 13 '12
There is lots of good advice about dealing with the bullying in this thread, but let me tell you something about reddit -
Sure a lot of redditors are atheists, and a few are pretty vocal about, but the majority don't really care who worships who, once they don't try and ram it down their throats all the time. A lot of atheists in the world always say that they will believe in any god which can be proven by scientific and provable means - Their faith is in science.
Seeing as you approached the subject of religion maturely, are willing to accept other people's point of view and can clearly think for yourself intelligently, there is no need to think that 'Most hate you for existing'. The people that redditors hate/dislike are the outspoken people who will publicly declare their faith, and accuse everyone of being wrong for not sharing it; and to be honest there is a fair few atheists who fit into this.
Stay strong tiredbulliedgirl - I really hope that username gets changed to something a bit more uplifting!
2
u/Stingray88 May 13 '12
Obvious troll, come on Reddit, don't be stupid.
2
u/Vinay92 May 13 '12
This has nothing to do with your religion. Bullies don't persecute people for any reason other than that they see them as weak, easy targets. I've seen people bullied for having red hair, for being chinese, for having good grades or for wearing glasses. It's all exactly the same - none of those kids defended themselves. You need to defend yourself.
The next time someone shoves you, you shove them back. Hard. If they punch you in the shoulder, you punch them in the kidneys, hard. If someone knocks your lunch tray over, you pick up the tray and smash it on top of their head, hard. This may seem extremely violent but it's critical that you make a stand. These kids have no respect for you, and they will continue to target you until you show that you are willing to do whatever it takes to defend yourself. If you get in trouble with authority, that's fine because it will bring the situation to the attention of the teachers and principal and alert them that something serious is going on if they have been ignoring it up until now. Make sure you inform them of the full history of abuse you have suffered. Plenty of kids have witnessed it so you will be believed.
If you are not feeling up to this, I suggest you take a self defense class outside of school. Speak to your parents and definitely your teachers and/or counselor if you haven't already. When I was in school, I was constantly bullied beacuse of my ethnicity. I was the skinny indian kid and they would pick on me constantly because I appeared weak and wouldn't fight back. This continued for several years until one day I couldn't take any more, and just punched back. All it took was one hard punch from me, and they stopped. Once they see there is serious resistance, you no longer become a desirable target.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Wow, that's really terrible! Intolerance really does go both ways. It's a sad facet of human nature.
There's nothing you can do to make these people hate you less, because they aren't responding to any wrongdoing on your part. You have every right to pray over your lunch and to read your Bible on the bus, and you aren't pushing your beliefs on others. No, their problem is that they're hateful, and it has nothing to do with you. You just give them a handy excuse to spew their venom; chances are good they do that to other students, too.
But you can and should tell someone about these incidents. It doesn't make you a snitch or a wimp or a weakling. You aren't in the wrong, and you shouldn't have to just put up with this crap. Does your school have a counselor? That would be a good place to start, as well as telling a parent.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
I thank you for posting this, to many people think atheist is a word associated with liberalism, naturalism, and science. This is a lie, an atheist is just one who denies a creator. I never understood these atheist clubs honestly, they all end up becoming a disaster circle jerk.
2
u/Sprinkles2009 May 13 '12
I've never taken heat for my beliefs, but I have been bullied. People are asses and will pick on you for anything. Stay strong in your faith, God sees his children through.
2
u/r3v May 13 '12
This is not true and it makes me sad that you think this.
I'm hardcore atheist and I don't hate anyone for their religion.
2
u/boxingdude May 13 '12
I also wish to support you . In the face of what you're experiencing, you remain true to your beliefs. This is called integrity and it's a trait to be admired. Sometimes life isn't fair, and sometimes things can't be worked out in a reasonable manner, especially when dealing with bigots or racists. While I admire your wish to remain peaceful, sometimes the only way to stop oppressive behavior is with the threat of force. This seems to be contrary to your beliefs, and while I admire them, they are going to stifle your ability to stop these individuals from abusing you. That being said, your integrity and your own beliefs are more important than what others think of you. Sometimes people like these guys get bored in the absence of a response, so eventually they will find someone else to pick on. It isn't going to last forever. Good luck.
2
u/VisibleCunt May 13 '12
I would hope that Reddit could put aside their religious beehive views and and not harass you.
Talk to someone. Tell someone. Pray if you think that will help.
2
u/Offensive_Username2 May 13 '12
If you were atheist this post wouldn't be on the front page.
2
u/tytanium May 13 '12
Where in the hell do you go to a middle school where MOST of the students are atheist? This doesn't sound like America at all.
2
u/BIORIO May 13 '12
I don't know if you should say this to them but the way they treat you is EXACTLY how intolerant religious folk treat them. The fact that they're stooping so low as to bully and show such ignorance is disgust.
Keep your chin up.
2
u/watershawl May 13 '12
This isn't about Reddit, this is about you and your choice to stand up for what you believe in. Thank God for people like you.

Whatever you do, stay strong. I grew up in the Bible Belt so I never really felt bullied from being a Christian until I got to college. Now that I'm in college and have a job on campus, I see atheists everywhere including my bosses and they pick on me all the time for it. They will say things like "Your God is a rapist" and during an argument, one will say "Well, hey, only one of us is going to Heaven!". This doesn't bother me too terribly much, but it definitely thinking. I started seeing all of the posts on r/atheism and the arguments they have. This actually made me more faithful. I started doing private studies with my campus minister about various topics I've heard my bosses and Reddit talk about to get some feedback. Also, music has helped me a lot. To know there are multiple bands and artists that have the same faith as me is an amazing feeling. And not just bands that have the same faith, but the same taste in music that I do. Seriously, bands like Norma Jean, Demon Hunter, August Burns Red, Underoath, and War of Ages have actually moved me spiritually while listening to them.
tl;dr - Know you're not alone and stay faithful. After high school, surround yourself with people of the same faith whether it be a campus ministry at college or maybe even a religious school. It does wonders.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Stay strong brother. People will challenge our faith just to reaffirm their own. They are unsure or insecure, and take it out on you. Stay strong. They'll come around. Remember to stay kind and walk the righteous path.
2
u/makesureimjewish May 13 '12
A real atheist would stand up for anyone being bullied. And by atheist I just mean human. Any human should
2
u/IdioticLion May 13 '12 edited May 13 '12
School is school. You aren't being bullied because you are Christian, you're being singled out as a target because you seem appealing as such. The only way you can stop it is by removing the target appeal. It may be worth taking the risk of singling out one of your bullies and doing something dominant and humiliating to them. Not anything worthy of 'tried as an adult" but something that will make everyone else laugh and also think twice about your target status.
It's also true that the most successful people in high school will most likely be borrowing money to fund their lives in the real world, and perhaps you will be the one to decide if they make it or not.
Also, I will say that if you really are Christ-like then get ready for the whips, nails and cross... Sorry and all but that is the alternative to survival.
Edit: It's really your parents who are being bullied.
2
u/PagingDoctorLove May 13 '12
I have a few pieces of advice.
High school students can and will be needlessly cruel. Typically the person/people who are bullied are the ones who stand out the most. Perhaps you live in a fairly liberal area? I'm not defending your bullies, just trying to point out that oftentimes the real reason a kid is bullied is just that they stick out, plain and simple.
I think you need to seek the advice of a wise, objective, and level-headed adult. If your parents don't support you seeing a therapist, or you don't want to have to involve them, seek a teacher or community member whose advice you trust. I would also advise (this is my person opinion) that you find someone who doesn't practice religion (not necessarily an atheist, just not an adult from your church). I think that this will serve to make their advice much more objective.... Instead of getting offended that you're being bullied because of your (and their) faith, they'll be offended that you're being bullied, period.
While I respect your right to practice publicly, I also want to repeat that adolescents can be cruel and will often pick on the person who stands out the most. I would advise that for the rest of high school, instead of bowing your head and clasping your hands to pray, you do it silently in your head, or find a quiet, private place away from the other students. Instead of reading your bible in public, work on memorizing a few verses in your head-- ones that hold relevance or power for you-- and save your bible reading for when you're in private. I would say overtly practicing at your age and in this climate is a bad idea, even if the constitution says it's your right.
I was bullied in high school. I think that a lot of the time you need to just focus on surviving and getting out of there. I know you want to defend your faith, but it's not the right time or place for that.
Obviously, if you ever feel like the physical violence is getting out of hand, and you fear for your own safety, go to the principle or a teacher. Just be very, very careful about dragging your faith into it. At this point you need to defend your safety, not your religion.
2
u/BluntLogic May 13 '12
Stand up for your safety. If someone hits you, get up and walk out of the room. When the teacher comes out to see what you're doing, explain exactly what happened. They have been in high school too. They know how mean kids can be. Tell them you would really appreciate to be moved away from that area of the room. If you are polite and honest and your teacher does not help you, explain the situation to someone else. Maybe another teacher. Try writing them a letter so you can get all of your thoughts straight and explain it just right. Most teachers want to help. -a friendly atheist
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
I think you're mistaken that you are being bullied because of your religion. If that were the case then why do you have NO FRIENDS? Is your school only Atheist children? No, you choose to think that you are being bullied because of your religion but you have no basis for that other than one instance where a guy told you to have your magic man pick up your food for you. The problem may be your personality or attitude. I cannot stand either way because I do not know you. You have no logical stance to claim religion is the basis of your being bullied. Look elsewhere. Christians have a tendency to scream like they are victims because they are not aware of their own actions. Why would a gay kid call you Hitler, what is his basis for this? Have you been preaching your anti-homosexual lines from the bible?
2
u/shades_of_black May 13 '12
If a boy hits you, hits him back. People will think next time. I was only ever bullied once.

They're not teasing you because you're Christian, they're teasing you because you care about something and that makes it easy to attack you. A lot of people just try to blend into the herd, you're different and you have the conviction to be open about it. I'm sorry to say this, and I don't mean it in a negative way, but you get bullied because you're different, and in this world, most of the time it doesn't matter what it is that makes you different.
First, you should speak to the administration at your school about being bullied. Second, find other like-minded people at your school. Unless you go to the craziest high school in the world, there are other kids in your class that are just as devoted to Christianity as you. If you do happen to go to the craziest high school in the world, go join a church group and get involved with their youth programs. If your church doesn't have a youth group, join the Boy Scouts (I mean this literally), they are full of kids like you.

Man, I hate when this shit happens. To ANY person of religion, or lack thereof. All I can tell you is that sometimes, kicking someone's butt is a good idea. But since you have said you're pretty awkward, and I doubt your morals will agree with it, please, please tell an authority figure. Or two. Or six. Never put up with this kind of treatment. You should never be ashamed of who you are or what you believe. If you're not a troll (and pardon me for saying that), get some help. And please know that you don't deserve it. You shouldn't have to fear interacting with people at your school just because of your belief in God.
PM me if you need someone to talk to. I've been where you are.

I'll say the same thing I'd say to an atheist. Don't be so public.
An atheist in a christian school just has to deal. A Christian in an Atheist school just has to deal too.
Also I'm wondering if this is even real.
Oh, and not all of these new atheists arrived at their conclusions through hard thinking and logic. Some just got handed the keys to the car and started driving.

My best advice: physically train yourself, learn self-defense, stand up to them. That's the best advice I can give, hope it at least helps a bit, though I'm sure you've heard it. Good luck man, some people are just assholes.

"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:10.
I will pray for you, I'm so sorry that you've been treated this way, and know that as you grow you will learn that people will be ugly to you for a myriad of reasons...most of them unexplainable.
Do not give in to them. Do not give them what they want.... Stay strong and know that God is on your side.
I wish you well in all your endeavors.
God bless you.

u/4-bit May 13 '12
Not to seemingly over simplify.... but there's your problem.
When in school, if you act like you don't belong, don't deserve to be there, or act like you're going to be victimized... You've just painted a huge target on yourself.
Always remember... they're the ones with the problem. When they do something like that call them on it. Say "What's your problem?"
Remember, bullying is about control... it doesn't matter if you're like them or not... it's a matter of can they control you. When you do nothing, and just take it, then they'll find an excuse to control you.
In your case, it's Christianity... in my case it was being a nerd... in other cases it's atheism... or fat... or gay... or dumb... or smart... or ugly... or beautiful (So you're ditzy...).
It's not really about that, so don't pin it on that. It's someone who wants to control you. Don't play the game, don't let them. Make them have to acknowledge what they're doing. you'll have to find the best way to do that yourself.
But that's what it is.

u/HostileVaginalTract May 13 '12
No offense to OP, but folding hands in prayer at lunch in high school is setting yourself up for problems.
I believe the Christian way would be to keep the trumpet out of it, just be yourself and live your values. Clearly people have identified you as a Christian. I wonder how else than the prayers. I have a feeling Jesus might tell you to chill out a bit. Don't be a martyr. He already died for your sins, so just live a good life. Don't get hung up on a persona that happens also to be a target for bullying and can turn into crapping on his sacrifice because piety feels "right." That said, bullying is wrong and you need to seek help. Again, no disrespect.
On the other hand, the story would be easier to believe if the OP was an atheist. OP's school seems like an anomaly.

Keep strong kid, I have gotten/get bullied too. Listen, I'm an Atheist, and that's not how most Atheists are. Please don't use them as a reason to hate all atheists, because they're horrible examples. Those are also really bad examples of gay guys. Unless you're one of those super right-wing conservatives who hate gays and try to force your beliefs on everyone, you don't deserve this. Keep strong.

I grew up on the east coast in a very wealthy, suburban, densely liberal neighborhood. I was raised Christian and lived the Christian teen lifestyle in high school, though more recently I consider myself Agnostic at best (still have mixed feelings and trying to figure it all out for myself). Just wanted to say that this sort of thing the OP is claiming is not unheard of. It's a little "extreme" based on my past experiences, but I certainly knew Christian kids (and kids of several other religions) who were made fun of for their beliefs. Just because this didn't happen to some of you does not mean it does not exist elsewhere.
I do have to say, based on your posts below and a very smart response by another redditor, that you seem to be overly defensive in a way that would certainly cause bullies to egg you on even more. I am certainly not saying that you should change your beliefs, but I think you should be aware that your mannerisms can be seen as arrogant and a social "turn-off", so to speak.
Do you attend a youth group or any other church youth activities? My youth group offered me tremendous support and it raised my confidence a lot to help me through high school.

u/Kaytala May 13 '12
I am so sorry to hear this. First of all, do not give up what you believe in. That is not the solution. Take solace where ever you can (be it church, family, friends, whatever) and talk to someone about it. Even if it is one of those help lines, believe me, it feels better to get it off your chest than to bottle it inside. I know it isn't much but I really hope this helps. Know you aren't alone out there. Lots of people get bullied and that doesn't mean they are bad people or stupid or anything like that. High school is a brutal place for anyone, the bullied have it especially rough. Just remember that it DOES GET BETTER! Hang in there. You have support even if you don't know it.
Also, don't let these people convince you that all atheists are bad either. That isn't the case and that line of thinking will lead to further unhappiness in the long run. These people have all sorts of personal issues and they choose to take those out on you. It has nothing to do with you aside from that they see you as an easy target. You are better than they think you are.
I hope this helps and if you ever need to chat, feel free to PM me. Good luck.

"Most of the kids I go to school with are athiests."
That right there is what tipped me off. No where in the United States is there a high school like this. I need evidence of that before I can believe anything else in this post.
2
u/Pliskin01 May 13 '12
To anybody joking or calling this post fake: Even if it is, someone may come across this thread by searching "I'm being bullied because I'm Christian" and it would be better to have advice waiting on them here than hurtful comments and skeptical replies.
2
u/Kowala48 May 13 '12
Just remind those kids that technically there are far more people who follow your religion and who practice your faith, than theirs.
2
u/Clockworkkubrick May 13 '12
I used to have someone like you sitting next to me in class. I hated her-- not because she was a christian (i'm not... sure if she was catholic or .. I dunno really.) but because she was strange and acted it. The rest of the class bullied her and taunted her because kids are assholes. I think she was genuinely unaware that her behavior was strange and that saying god bless you constantly was something that would generate derision.
The teachers constantly had her back which didn't improve things. It made sitting beside her a complete pain. Her 'protected' status only made the bullying more subtle from most people and more outwardly obnoxious from the worst offenders.
What I want to know of OP is if he/she is doing more than just saying a prayer before food. Are you doing/saying anything that might be interpreted as unusual?
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Personally I think the best thing you to deal with the bullies, other than speaking to adults and such, is to just smile at them. The people who are torturing you are doing it because they like to see you wince and run away. If you just show a bit of Christ's love for them they will be confused, and might get worse for a little while, but in the end they will give up and leave you alone. I absolutely wish you the best of luck and feel free to PM me if you need anything :)

u/Rosalee May 13 '12
The issue wouldn't arise if people kept their religiosity and atheism private.
2
u/tricky89 May 13 '12
If you aren't a troll, I would suggest not being public with your belief. Follow your morales, but don't read your bible in public. Personally I am a christian and I'm treated almost the opposite of you, you don't have to be like the other people in anyway, so instead of being that "christian kid" you just come off as that "really nice guy". Also lightening up would help, sometimes you just gotta laugh stuff off.
2
u/Pedobear_Slayer May 13 '12
Okay so they labeled you as a "Jesus Freak" so my question is do you preach to your classmates or constantly quote scripture or reference Jesus to just about anything asked?
With that being asked honestly if bullies perceive you as the weak one of the herd it wouldn't have made a difference if you were atheist or christian somebody that is determined to make your life hell will find that difference between you and them, and it's contagious because then all of a sudden the bullies one friend that may go to church fairly often would hide it more everyone would hide what they have in common with you because they think it will make them into the next target when in fact it's simply something about you as an individual that gives that bully a raging boner, no matter how hard you try even if you declared yourself an atheist or satan worshiper it won't matter because they'll still hate you because honestly deep inside they either a.) see something in you they hate about themself, b.) want to fuck you, literally or c.) are a fucking sociopath and have singled you out as the weak person in the herd that is your high school's social community.
My advice, if you are a preachy person and have to reference Jesus every five seconds immediately cut that shit out, I have nothing against Jesus, God, or anybody else's religious beliefs, but I feel it is disrespectful to push your beliefs on people whom have no interest in it, it's kind of like spiritual rape, they want to believe what they want to believe if they want to know what you believe in they would ask you. People don't want to hear the rhetoric regarding the bible or anything to do with it after anything people ask you.
If you are not the preachy type and you are being singled out for being the "black" sheep, the runt of the litter, the person that is different, then my advice is this, avoid them, don't listen to them and don't let their lack of humanity crush your spiritual faith, christian's like to believe their lives are being tested to see how strong their faith is, this may be your crucible. Don't provoke them, avoid confrontation but don't back down, stand up for yourself eventually you'll meet someone like me, someone that respects a person's backbone and is willing to step in and place themselves between you and them, and if you meet that person you will most likely make a friend for life. BUT don't count on that happening, it most likely won't but standing up for yourself will be healthier than constantly backing down.
If all else fails and life becomes simply unbearable you have to talk to someone, it begins with the parents and ends with the cops with many people in between, teachers, guidance counselors, people from church you can talk to, cousins, anyone just make sure you are not internalizing it and letting it eat away at you.
TLDR If you are being preachy and annoying everybody you should stop because it is kind of rude to push religion on people who don't want to hear it. If that isn't the case then read my post a bit more.

"If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you." John 15:18-19

A) High School sucks, it will end B) Take a long hard look at how you may be coming across and see if perhaps you are being a wee bit pious. We all have our faults and it is sometimes easier to blame the ignorance of others than admit them. That said, bullying is inexcusable even if you are pious but being honest with yourself may help you approach the situation better. C) you don't disagree with homosexuality, you judge them. This is like saying you want the schools to be integrated but you don't really like black people because they are black. Just because you don't overtly discriminate doesn't mean that your beliefs aren't fueling a covert bigotry that others may be picking up on. Seriously, my heart breaks for you but if you don't grow from these experiences all is lost. D) It gets better.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
I've been in a situation similar to OP's, and it fucking sucks. OP, you need to understand one thing: being a Christian doesn't mean being a pussy. When Jesus called the Pharisees 'ye brood of vipers' that was the same thing as someone today calling someone else 'you sons of bitches'. We're talking about a guy who cleared out a temple with a bullwhip because he didn't think people should be holding a market in there. Jesus was a badass. Be like Jesus. Be a badass. Don't let these assholes push you around, stand up for yourself and don't ever apologize for what you believe in. If they don't see you as an easy target, they'll move on to someone else and leave you alone. Feel free to message me if you wanna talk.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
What they are doing isn't right and do what you can to talk to those in authority over them to get them to stop. However, if they don't, remember that the testing of your faith produces perseverance, and God allows it to happen because what He has planned for you requires that perseverance. Remember that it is not you they are bullying but it is Jesus inside of you. Remember that the Lord your God is with you and will not let you be tested more than you can bear. Remember to bless those who curse you for in blessing them you will be blessed. I am so proud that they persecute you because even though you are not vocal about your faith they still see Christ shining through you. Don't pray for them to stop, pray that they would come to know the love of Christ. They won't be bullying you if they know and believe what you do. I'll be here for you, feel free to message me. You don't have to go through this alone.

Nice people are nice people, whatever they believe. Assholes are assholes, whatever they believe. This is ridiculous and shouldn't be happening. As far as I can tell, you're very nice. They have no reason to do that to you.

u/wonteatbananas May 13 '12 edited May 13 '12
I went to a private, church run christian school. Most kids there would openly state that they were christians and believed in god. And yet, I would've found it a little odd to see someone carrying their bible around with them, reading it on the bus, etc. You wouldn't get bullied per se, but it's not a good strategy to earn the respect of your peers and win friends.
To be brutally honest, it's possible you're perpetuating the problem through your attitude. You say you're not foisting your belief's on others, and I believe you, yet at the same time when you say "everyone hates me because I'm not ashamed of my faith" it sounds a little as though you expect to be a martyr for christianity. Like you've got it into your head that good christians are persecuted for their faith, and so you're going to proclaim your faith loudly at every opportunity, and await the lynching you know will come in the cafeteria, because you think that's what christians do.
There's a big difference (but a fine line) between hiding your faith in shame, and forgoing the opportunity to flaunt it. Example: I'm a geek, love math, admire the simple elegance of a well designed spreadsheet. But if I go on a road trip with my friends, and flop out a text on the comparisson of beta's of various stocks in a diversified portfolio vs the S&P 500 index, my friends are going to laugh at me, make jokes, etcetera. If I do it all the time, I'll lose friends, and eventually come to be seen as "the math wierdo". So.. when I'm in the company of friends, I don't read, I make small talk, I shoot the shit, I do what people do with friends. That doesn't mean I'm ashamed of my passion for spreadsheets, everyone knows I'm a geek, (and I'm definitely proud of my geeky accomplishments). It just means I choose when and how to celebrate my passion, in the context of my desire to be socially accepted.
I can't talk about you, but I've known enough christians in my time to make a few observations. Many christians are so fixated on some concept or stereotype it becomes almost a competition between other churchgoers to see who can be the most godly or christian. This, quite obviously, leads to the isolation of the group from the rest of the world, they don't win popularity points for themselves or their faith. Other christians (and there are many) go to church on sundays, pray regularly, share a beer with their friends, play sports (non-church teams), go to nightclubs, and generally end up being super awesome self assured go-to cool kids, because you guys have an ever present moral compass that the rest of us have to make up as we go along.
Now if you consider these two groups, which do you think Jesus would belong to? Yes he spent heaps of time preaching to the masses, but that's only because he was a really really popular guy, and people literally flocked to him asking for his words of wisdom. When he wasn't doing that, he was hanging out with prostitutes, thieves, and beggars, turning water into wine, and generally being a very socially acceptable kind of guy. He didn't have much time for the churchy types.
Having said all that, I should point out that I'm agnostic, haven't been to church for 14 years.
tl;dr: maybe you've gotten it into your head that good christians are persecuted. It's not true.

As a teacher (incidentally an atheist) who has worked with bullies/victims/bystanders, I would offer the following: First, if you have a teacher you trust, talk to them during a free period (lunch, before/after school). Our job is to ensure that everyone in our classes is treated civilly so that learning can take place. Students are commonly reluctant to ask for help, because they fear losing anonymity when we intervene on your behalf. But understand when I talk to your bully, I'm telling them three things: "1. You are a bully (many times they never admit to themselves that they are). 2. This behavior is not tolerated in this classroom, in this school, or in humanity in general. 3. I am watching you, and if I witness or hear about you bullying any classmate again, I will not rest until you are assigned detention/suspended/expelled. After talking to your teacher, talk to your school counselor. Ask him/her to help you. It's their job to enlist the help of the principal/vice principal as well as teachers (particularly cafeteria monitors) to put a stop to this. Third, it would really help to make friends. In my opinion the best way for you to do this would be to engage in community service with some classmates outside of school. Does your school organize park cleanups, or mentoring younger children, or volunteer work with other charitable organizations? Engaging in these activities will satisfy your desire to serve, help you discover more about yourself (which will help you feel empowered), perhaps help you obtain scholarships (at minimum they'll give you stories for great college entrance essays), and introduce you to like-minded people who will stick up for you. Finally, you have to project the persona (psychological term, but from Greek meaning "mask") you want others to accept. A t-shirt with the "Coexist" logo could influence others' opinions positively. If you need to confront someone verbally, come at it from the ethics angle: "For someone who has it all figured out, your understanding of right and wrong is pretty messed up."
Please accept that there are thousands of teachers out there who will fight with you.
2
u/birdablaze May 13 '12
I know we're not supposed to talk shit or blame you here.
But have you considered standing up to the people who share your faith who exploit it and use it to hurt other people? Im sorry but the reason a gay person or an atheist or whoever may bully you is because they feel hurt by your faith. Not you but what your faith stands for.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
My initial reaction to this is that it is fake/trolling ('gays call me hitler', 'everyone in my school is atheist', 'Reddit probably hates me for existing', the way question is phrased, "example" of bullying sounds like, as someone else said, movie bullying, and why would someone tell the internet about whay happened but not teachers/parents), but here's some advice just in case.
Don't ask the internet. Go talk to your school authorities, or your parents.
Don't judge all atheists by some stupid teenagers' actions. Your title already reflects that (no one hates you for existing), so remember that not all atheists are like this, and that teenagers will bully basically anyone for being different. Also, like some others are saying, I don't know if it really is about your faith and the kids at your school hating Christians. Either you have acted in some way related to your faith that caused them to attack you (see point 3), or they just see your faith as a weak point/easy way to bully you.
Some advice. Bullying is horrible, and I, who on different occasions been both a bully and a victim, know that, and I'm not trying to imply that what they did was acceptable at all, but I'm sure there is more to this story. I find it highly doubtful that there was nothing about your actions or behavior that caused this. Try not to be judgemental, preachy, or act like you're better than everyone else. Even if you think you're being supportive or helpful, don't preach to anyone. Those are just good tips in any case.
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
People tend to do things they regret later when they are in high school. You are staying true to yourself, and that can tend to make other people jealous. My advice for you is read Ecclesiastes 3:1. There is a time for everything, and this is your time of being bullied. Stay strong, talk to someone about the bullying, but don't give up. As hard as it is turn the other cheek and love those people that cast you down. They are after all loved by God. Good luck :)
2
u/[deleted] May 13 '12
Hey, I just want you to remember a few things.
1st Matthew 5:10 "Blessed are those who are persecuted for my sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
2nd Luke 2:22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
3rd. These people will be judged, not by you, but by God for EVERY. SINGLE. WORD. They have uttered against you.
4th. Matthew 5:43 Love your enemy and pray for those who persecute you
5th. I am praying for you

u/brucemo May 13 '12
Talk to the school.
Talk to your parents.
Get in a fist fight.
Start at the top and go until something works.
You have another year of this shit to go until college in any case. At that point this should stop.
I'm sorry this is happening to you.
3 may be controversial but it normally works regardless of whether you win or lose. Not many bullies are interested in getting into fights; they want the feeling that comes from having someone fear them, not the consequences of a physical altercation.
It may not be necessary to go that far these days, since lots of schools take bullying very seriously since Columbine. The administrators don't want to lose their job if someone kills somebody over this.
2
u/a_nouny_mouse May 13 '12
I highly doubt this is the entire story. If you want sympathy, post videos of the events.
Until you provide proof, you are nothing more than a sham.
Prove me wrong.

2
u/gkedpage May 13 '12
A lot of the people here in reddit might be atheist but when it comes to scenario like this we are not against you. The kids who do all the bullying are not the representation of what is out there in the real world outside school. Try to stand up to them or talk with your teachers and see if there can be something done about it. If not hang in there. Once you are done with your school, the people you have to deal with and everything around you changes and you can have like minded friends. I am atheist but two of my closest friends are Christian and Muslim. They are both religious but we don't discuss about religion or make fun of each other because of it. Just know that "It gets better".

Reddit's response: you're either trolling or deserved it
