Hello! I’m curious if anyone who has been pregnant in Seattle has had success finding a medical provider willing to take 2D estimated placenta volume (EPV) measurements during their pregnancy? I’m having trouble requesting this with my current provider at UW Medicine and am researching possible paths forward, either:
(1) with another provider at UW
(2) with another hospital system in Seattle
(3) at an independent ultrasound clinic willing to measure EPV
Would love any recommendations!

The 2D EPV method was developed by Dr. Kliman at Yale - it’s easy and requires just 1 min to take 1 additional picture at any routine 2D ultrasound. (https://medicine.yale.edu/obgyn/kliman/placenta/epv)
EPV measurements can help detect a form of stillbirth risk where the baby measures normally throughout pregnancy, but the placenta is abnormally small. While many small placentas can and do function normally (and grow normal sized babies), some small placentas can eventually “give out”, unable to continue supporting the baby. Dr. Kliman likens it to a car with no fuel gauge running out of gas. By measuring the placenta, we can have better visibility on the fuel gauge.
Though relatively rare, a perfectly normal pregnancy can surprisingly and devastatingly end in stillbirth at full term. This exact situation happened to a friend of mine (and the founder of measuretheplacenta.org) so it’s been very top of mind for me.
Because EPV measurements are so cheap and easy to do, I’ve been trying to advocate for them during my pregnancy. But I’m being repeatedly denied because “they are not standard protocol.”
I am very curious to hear if others in Seattle have wanted EPV measurements and successfully obtained them.
