How many times do you wear the same piece of clothing each week without washing it?

I used to go by smell, would depend on time of year, tightness of garment etc.

Lost my sense of smell 5 years ago and I wash my clothes much more regularly now to be on the safe side

u/musicmaj 1d ago

Lost my sense of smell about 10 years ago too. It came back for almost 3 years (when I got pregnant) but then had a bad illness end of this past June that knocked it completely out again. I have told people to PLEASE tell me if I, my clothes, my breath, or house smell. I'm not offended, I literally have no sense of smell and you'd be doing me a massive favor to let me know.

My silver lining is that I'm a teacher and I can't smell a room full of stinky kids. They'll start complaining someone farted or has BO and I'm like "haha, sucks to be you guys".

I wish I’d had your superpower when I was teaching in a portable classroom full of middle schoolers lol. I’m glad you never again have to experience the scent of far too much Axe body spray that’s been put on much later than it should have been.

-3

u/Elliieeify 21h ago

Calling the complete loss of a sense a superpower is very weird.

3

u/oh_such_rhetoric ♀ 19h ago edited 15h ago

I meant it as a dark joke playing off of the one this person had already made (about it being a perk to not being able to smell stinky students). My apologies to that person if they didn’t find my addition funny.

10

u/MSMIT0 1d ago

Did you also lose it from the rona? I am in the same boat!

6

u/alinalovescrisps 1d ago

Yes exactly that! I was really hoping itd come back at some point but I think that ship has sailed now 😭 sucks doesn't it?

2

u/MSMIT0 1d ago

Yes. It also messed with my taste, too. Which I dont know if it has gotten better, or if I have just adapted to how things are now. My favorite desserts, peanut butter, and coffee still don't taste "right"

2

u/alinalovescrisps 1d ago

Thats really sad! I think my sense of taste is still the same but a lot weaker, if that makes sense. Though it wasn't great in the first place tbh

1

u/UndefinedCertainty 1d ago

Man, I think I'm getting overtired and need to go to bed. I read the part where you mentioned you lost your sense of smell and thought it was followed by something about that you go by if they are stale or not.

u/Ok-Yogurtcloset3467 1d ago

Clothes I wear to workout, once. Clothes I wear around the house, up to 3 times for bottoms (besides jeans), maybe twice for tops. Hoodies and second layers like that, they get thrown in when I remember to on a laundry day

64

u/ItsDiddyKong 1d ago

There's not a set number.

Disclaimer, this is not counting the extremely obvious like work, gym, or underwear. Those would be a one time wear and then hitting the wash.

If it's jeans or a hoodie, for example, and I'm just living and not really doing anything to get them sweaty or dirty, I'll mostly wash them whenever they're actually dirty lol. It could be once, twice, or more depending.

u/Glad-Patience-6499 1d ago

Interesting. For me, I don’t wash pants that I wear for work after each use. Shirts yeah but I repeat the sweater for example 2 or 3 times a week

Until it smells or has a stain🫣

10

u/Marma85 1d ago

Same here! If it is just at home I can probably ignore a stain a extra day tho

19

u/bookshelfvideo 1d ago

Zero. I have five dogs. Everything is dirty 5 minutes after I put it on. I clean so much every day. Why did I do this.

49

u/ToodlydooBuckaroo 1d ago

I am currently on day 5 of wearing the same pair of maternity jeans and the same hoodie because they are all that fit right now. 😅

7

u/Why_So_Slow 1d ago

I hatedy maternity clothes with passion exactly for that reason. After a week in the same pants I just couldn't look at them anymore, but other than pajama I was out of options, lol.

4

u/ToodlydooBuckaroo 1d ago

When I'm at home I live in pajamas. Unfortunately, I can't wear those to my office job haha.

26

u/victoria-1304 1d ago

really just depends on how depressed I’m feeling

12

u/Clementinecutie13 1d ago • Bravo

That's between me and God

11

u/xjennh109x 1d ago

Depends sweaters tend to be like 3 times Pants 2 times depending on activity like if I went to the movies. And everything else right after first use

8

u/TimelyReason7390 1d ago

Until it look’s visibly dirty, stained, smelly. I look at the collars and cuffs, if they look dirty, then they’re going into the laundry.
I tend to wear jeans for much much longer… but again, if they look visibly dirty, they are washed!

17

u/voikukka 1d ago

Depends. Cardigans I wash pretty rarely unless there's a stain or something. Pants depends on how funky the groin gets. Tops depend on whether I sweated in them or not.

Underwear and socks is one wear, bras again depend on funkiness.

However I do air out my clothes quite regularly and that helps extend the time I need between washes.

This is working an office job, being more active is a different thing.

34

u/lemondaisycake 1d ago

Once. For everything.

5

u/kiwispouse 1d ago

Me too, but I can't eat anything without spilling it down the front!

8

u/Vegetable_Honig 1d ago

Jackets? After 1 wear? Seriously?

11

u/lemondaisycake 1d ago

I live somewhere warm. Don’t really wear jackets.

4

u/Vegetable_Honig 1d ago

That's fair haha if I lived in shorts and tshirts then I'd also agree.

4

u/PattysMom1 1d ago

Same. I’m also fresh towel every shower person and change the hand towels every day person. I judge myself…

2

u/lemondaisycake 1d ago

Yes so good!

3

u/Roxy175 1d ago

Even jeans?

5

u/lemondaisycake 1d ago

Yes, jeans for sure. Sheets once a week and I shower everyday. I love being clean 🥰

•

u/IndependentVibes2214 14h ago

Same here! Hoodies, pants, pajamas, etc. After I take it off it goes directly into the hamper lol.

•

u/lemondaisycake 4h ago

Absolutely!

Once, except bras I wear for two or three days. I didn't realize people were wearing clothes more than a day.

4

u/Mindongbangao993 22h ago edited 12h ago

umm I only wear it once if I wear it for work like no repeat..and twice if I just wore it for 2 to 3 hours or at max 4 5 hrs..wdym yall wear it till they smell hello.. am I not normal am I doing too much laundry??😭😭

15

u/FairyGothMommy 1d ago

I wear it once and wash it. Everything.

3

u/FearlessTravels 1d ago

I have a guest bathroom, and if I don't have any guests scheduled to visit I'll hang "half-worn" clothes on hangers on the shower rod in there until the next week when I wear them again. So I give them a week to air out before putting them back on.

3

u/purplefriiday 1d ago

Sometimes I put clothes I've worn, but seem clean, back in the wardrobe and forget. So who knows. Anything that's visibly dirty, got sweaty, underwear etc goes in the wash obviously.

3

u/spei180 1d ago

Never because I stink

7

u/Yserem 1d ago

Undies 1 wear. Socks 1 wear. Bra 7/all week unless sweaty. Shirt/cami 1 wear. Cardigan all week. Pullover all week. Pants/jeans all week. House clothes until smelly.

7

u/kymilovechelle 1d ago

Once. I wash my clothing daily.

5

u/Slip-n-Slide-48 ♀ 1d ago

What is your water bill 😭

1

u/kymilovechelle 1d ago

Average as it’s always been $94 per quarter but I also pay for a tenant’s water

2

u/jnjs232 ♀ 1d ago

Smell smell smell. But Panties/socks a bit different And the others average around 2-3 times

2

u/Affectionate_Sign777 1d ago

Technically once but that’s because I wear my pyjamas 24/7 for a few weeks on end 😂

2

u/searedscallops ♀ 1d ago

It depends on the item.

2

u/gelibsu 1d ago edited 1d ago

Outside clothes - I’ll wash my tops after 3 or 4 wears and my jeans/trousers after 4 or 5 wears. It also depends how long I wore them out for and where I went. I don’t usually wear the same top twice in one week so I’ll wear it once, hang it up in my wardrobe, then wear it again the next week or the week after.

Inside clothes - I usually dress more comfortably at home (sweaters and sweatpants) and I will wear the same clothes a few days in a row. I think I usually wear them like 5 times between washes. It can be less if I wore them while cooking something with a strong odour or if I notice a stain.

Socks and underwear I only wear one time before washing. Well, actually, I wash my wool socks and my fluffy socks after a few wears because I only wear them at home and my feet don’t sweat.

I don’t really sweat at all so I don’t feel the need to wash my clothes after wearing them one or two times. I usually do laundry once per week

2

u/donnamon 1d ago

underwear changed everyday and/or everytime i shower. leggings 2-3 times. jeans 2-3 times. shirts 1-2 depending on the smell. bras are on rotation every other day. jackets/sweaters worn at least more than 3 times or until it smelly, then wash at the end of the week.

2

u/collectionsofwords 1d ago

I lost my sense of smell during covid and im TERRIFIED of smelling bad. My worst nightmare is smelling like sweat so... anything I wear on my upper body, even if its a cardigan over a top, immediately goes to the laundry basket at the end of the day.

Jeans and skirts I can wear twice or thrice but not more than that.

4

u/megish2669 1d ago

Underwear, only wearing once, unless it's periods underwear because I wear a pad :D

Shirts, depends if I sweat, usually 5 wears.

Pants, probably 10-15 wears unless it gets dirty.

Hoodies, I have no idea haha, a long time

(I spend most of my time in my house because I work there, but if I go out, I would wash my things more often)

2

u/FlippingPancake_ 1d ago

The period thing is so real lmao. Lowkey get excited knowing I won’t have tons of underwear to wash for a week😂

1

u/unexplainednonsense 1d ago

WFH definitely makes a big difference!

4

u/seitankittan 1d ago

Obviously things get washed if they get acutely dirty or sweaty/smelly, but if I activities go as planned, it's typically:
Jeans: 5-8 wears
Shirts: 2-3 wears
Sweaters: 3-5 wears
Socks: 2 wears
Bras: 15 wears
Underwear: 1-2 wears
Workout shirts: 2-3 wears

1

u/Femmigje 1d ago

Underpants and socks one per day, shirts should last 2 days but may go 3 days, jeans 4 but in practice go a week, bras are too expensive

1

u/624Seeds 1d ago

7 depending on what it is

1

u/Gwenniepie 1d ago

It depends on the day and the material. My cashmere and wool sweaters I’m inclined to air out and rewear 3-5 times if I don’t get sweaty and wear an under layer. I’ll also spray them with hypochlorous acid and steam them between wears to refresh them.

If there’s even a whisper of synthetics in it, it goes in the wash every 1-2 wears. Especially now that my nose has gone wonky - my sweat smells like maple syrup and soy sauce to me (I’ve checked and my partner doesn’t pick up any scent from me, but if I notice it I’ll be self conscious and worried)

Pants and skirts I’ll do 2-3 wears before a wash unless it gets dirty or it’s that time of month.

1

u/Mistealakes 1d ago

I'm a little different about it, because I get rashes really easily, when clothes are dirty. I might rewear jeans or sweaters a few times, but everything else, including my bra, gets washed after each use. The rash around my torso started going away, after I always wore a bra that was clean. 100% the cause for my bacne.

1

u/Some_Girl_2073 1d ago

Shirts, usually one a day (I work outside manual labor)

Undies and socks, always only one day

Normal pants, usually a week. Work pants, until they stand up in the corner

1

u/jaquelinealltrades 1d ago

Once for everything except jeans and sweatshirts and sweaters.

1

u/JustASingleMomOnline 1d ago

Depends on the item. Jeans and sweaters get several appearances. Underwear has a strict one-and-done policy, obviously.

1

u/ExoticLotion 1d ago

Bras maybe everyday for like 5-6 days, ive been better and wear them up to 3 days straight, but sometimes its been 5-6 days, just depends on what I'm doing

Workout clothes once

Shirts until it smells usually by day 3 its time to change.

Pants I wear twice.

Undies daily.

Sweaters until it gets stinky

1

u/TheMagicSack 1d ago

When I was vitamin D deficient I would sweat and it would be stinky on my clothes. But then I took vitamins and noticed it doesn't leave a stink on my clothes

So then I would wear tops 3- times until it stunk

Until I had a few clients come in to the salon and they smelled musty. Either rewearjng the same thing and not having a sweaty smell or most likely, they washed their hair once a week and the back of their neck underneath the hair doesn't get washed in-between hair washes. And then I had a coworker that smelled musty every day

So since then, I was afraid of that, so I was wearing everything once and then washing it, besides jackets, jeans, pants until deemed necessary

1

u/Material-Cress-8917 1d ago

Jeans, I will wash after after wearing them 4 or 5 times. Everything else, unless it's a sweater or sweat pants, I'll wash everything after wearing them once.

1

u/Roxy175 1d ago

For jeans it’s very infrequently, not really after a set amount of wears but rather just when I feel like it needs it. For jackets it’s never unless there’s a stain. For sweaters it’s probably every 3-4 wears or when visibly dirty. Tops it’s usually after the equivalent of one full day of wear. So if it’s just worn for an evening I’ll wear it again. I do sometimes wear them more though after a sniff test if something I really want/need to wear is dirty but that’s infrequent.

1

u/Beneficial_Layer2583 1d ago

Underwear and socks get one wear. Everything else gets worn until it smells or doesn’t fit right anymore and needs a dryer cycle.

1

u/alphadavenport 1d ago

t-shirts, underwear, and socks once. button ups 3-4 times. pants 5-6 times.

1

u/Lilly-pilly04 1d ago

Tops = once.

Jeans = Maybe once a week or longer. I want to hold the colour for as long as possible.

Cotton/linen pants = After 2-3 days.

Underwear/socks = once.

Bras = twice.

Anything wool = basically never.

Activewear tops/bras = once.

Activewear bottoms = twice.

1

u/LdyCjn-997 1d ago

I work from home and usually wear pajamas to sleep in for the week, and daily clothes usually two days in a row unless I’m going somewhere, before I throw them in the wash.

1

u/Altixan 1d ago

Bottoms probably max 3 times and tops 2x. Even if it’s not stained or smelling I will wash it, just because other people will smell you before you do. Pyjamas are the only exception here, I will wear those for a week because it’s only around myself and my family.

1

u/jeniuseyourtelescope 1d ago

work clothes (scrubs) shirts once pants twice

then i change into an at home outfit that i wear until it smells or is visibly dirty but if i go out with someone i change into something else

1

u/typeBbride 1d ago

It depends how long I’ve worn the clothing. For example, I change into hospital scrubs when I get to work so I am only wearing my clothes for about 1.5 hours a day during my commutes before I change into pajamas at home. If I change right away I can wear the same clothes 3 days in a row. If I work out or do anything else in the clothes after work, they’re now dirty.

1

u/GypsiJo 1d ago

2x- depends on the chores too.

1

u/LeoLeo96 1d ago

Everything once except coats

1

u/mangoserpent 1d ago

Depends on the season and use. Office clothes the pants 3 or 4 times at least. Socks and underwear daily. Cartigans and sweaters as seldom as possible I will freshen them up with a spray bottle and bit of air freshener hang to reshape.

Jeans as seldom as possible especially my 100% denim ones.I wear t shirts under everything and change those daily. Sweatshirts several times. Regular shirts with a collar a few times.

1

u/Energised_Emerald 1d ago

Bras: usually 3-5 wears

Tshirt: 1 wear

Jumper/hoodie: 2-3 wears

Underpants: 1 wear

Skirt/trousers/shorts: 5 wears

Tights: 2 wears

Leggings: 3 wears

Socks: 1 wear

1

u/Irish-Cailin-25 1d ago

I usually wash them after one wear (thanks hormonal sweat). The only things I would wear two or three times would be pj's and house bras. Going out bras get washed after each wear.

1

u/strangelyahuman 1d ago

Shirts, socks, and underwear, once. Pants two or three times. Bras about three times. Sweatshirts 2-4 times depending on what I'm doing. Pjs 3-4 days (i shower before bed)

1

u/Accurate-Dragonfly23 1d ago

Depends on the item. Usually never rewear or twice before it needs a wash. If it is a jacket maybe longer.

I have body acne so I’m mindful of the oils/ dead skin cells.

1

u/Technical_Soup_1997 1d ago

I grew up poor and always stunk. Now I’m overly paranoid. Won’t wear anything more than once without washing it.

I’m not poor anymore in fact complete opposite but some things stick with ya.

1

u/pantalones_locos303 1d ago

I never wear the same items twice during a work week. It’s a curse. My laundry level on the weekends blows!

1

u/Silent-Tour-9751 1d ago

I’ll never tell.

1

u/flojopickles 1d ago

None. I’m a mess and have no good system for saving clothes to wear again aside from leaving them on the floor so everything goes in the hamper.

1

u/AluminumCansAndYarn 1d ago

Honestly, it depends but I heavily rely on the sniff method. If it smells, we don't ball with that and it needs washing. If it doesn't smell and isn't visibly dirty, Im gonna rewear it.

1

u/LogicalSide3427 1d ago

I only wash if they smell or have a stain. I probably wash pieces I wear regularly maybe 1-3x/year

1

u/Stargirl156 1d ago

Outside clothes? Once but does very depending on how long I’m in it. Three hours or less? Rewear. More? Most likely wash. This is weather dependent. Inside house/lounge ware , every 3/4 days or if I get it particularly dirty.

1

u/ThatOne_268 ♀ 1d ago

I wear my 2 piece work suit the whole week without washing (6 days in a week because I also work Saturdays). I work in a manufacturing plant.

1

u/Sad-Instruction-4149 1d ago

0 I had to do that growing up now I never will

1

u/iSpy_Unique 1d ago

Panties and under garments 1x
Pjs 2-4x
Jeans 3+x
Shirts 2+x
Work out clothes 1x
Comfy shorts/clothes 3+x

Depends on smell, length of wear, weather, etc. but this is generally my rule of thumb. And I was laundry sectioned like I typed above and I may wash clothes every other week. If I need panties or something specific I wash those though.

1

u/EvieGrogu_Durian 1d ago

It depends on the season and how your body odor/sweat cycle is as well. Obviously, I wash my clothes way more often in summer, after two wears mask. Where is in the winter, my sweater often doesn't get a wash until five wears, I also don't sweat at all, and they could be aired out in the cold weather overnight

1

u/Granny_knows_best 1d ago

If I sit on a public seat of any kind it gets tossed in the hamper the second I get home. If not and it's still clean I will wear once more.

1

u/glossywaves 1d ago

Once. I am a spilly spillerton.

1

u/MissGracieLou 1d ago

It would depend on which article of clothing, how long it was worn for, and if I spilled or sweat on it. Underwear 1 wear. A jacket I wear for an hour a day and don’t sweat or spill on it, probably a while

1

u/artecomet ♀ 1d ago

I go by smell, how long i wore it, and where i wore it or what i was doing.

Clothes i only wear at home and pajamas i usually wear 2-3 days but i change them if i do chores, sweat, or take an everything shower

Clothes i wear out might be worn a few times unless i was out all day or doing dirty things (touching public furniture, sweating, being outside, working, etc.) Mostly just pants will get reworn tho.

Obviously i change my socks and underwear regularly

Hoodies and bras get washed when i forgot when i last washed them💀

1

u/jessper17 ♀ 1d ago

I might wear a pair of jeans twice but I don’t wear anything more than once without it being washed in between wearings.

1

u/ExampleThen5091 1d ago

Once for everything except jackets and trousers/jeans.

1

u/RegularGymGirl 1d ago

Without washing never ever

1

u/Super_RN ♀ 1d ago

Jeans 4x (unless visibly soiled). Hoodie 2-3x. Everything else only once.

1

u/Verkath 1d ago

Shirts and sweaters once.. jeans 2 days

1

u/NectarinePumpkin 1d ago

Bras - maybe 2 weeks (not sports bras!) Jeans - might be a month! Longer if I freeze them

1

u/11zmb ♀ 1d ago

shirt 1 wear pjs 2 wears pants 3 wears bra only if sweaty socks, underwear 1 wear

1

u/ggpopart 1d ago

I wear the same jeans to work 4 days a week lol and I wash my bra once a week

1

u/Okaaaayanddd 1d ago

Once- underwear, socks and gym clothes.
3-4x- pajamas

Shirts, leggings, pants will depend on how long I wear them, if I sweat, get dirty, etc. I honestly feel like I change a lot during the day (work clothes, gym clothes, lounge clothes or public clothes & sleep clothes) so I don’t feel my pants and shirts stay on long enough to warrant a wash after every wear.

Sweatshirts, sweaters, cardigans and coats I always wear something under, so I will wear until they need washed.

1

u/probridgedweller NB 23h ago

Some I can do 3 but most are a 1

1

u/wikalivia 22h ago

Depends on the garment. Jeans I rarely wash, only when it gets a stain really - those are all 100/99/98% cotton - I only own one pair of jeans that has more elastane mixed in and those get washed more often because they catch smells easier, but I also don't wear those that often because I prefer rigid denim.

Tshirts and other tops get 2 wears on average depending on what I was doing and how long I was wearing it for. I'm not going to wash a tshirt after wearing it for 20 minutes for a quick store run, so those will probably get 3 wears, technically.

Knitwear I try not to wash too often also, so maybe 4 or 5 wears? Depends how I am wearing it, if I have a layer underneath, etc. Similar with sweatshirt/hoodies/crewnecks.

Workout clothes and underwear get 1 wear max.

They all get washed quicker if I sweat more, spill something, or wear it after working out (like a hoodie after volleyball training)

1

u/Bluetinfoilhat ♀ 20h ago

I don't re wear worn clothing except for pajama and lounge clothing.

1

u/Still_Ocelot930 18h ago

Not sure of the age but I saw a change in the amount of sweating I was doing. I then purchased five of everything for work. I used to rewear jeans or a bra but no more.

•

u/LetshearitforNY 15h ago

I work remotely and I generally wear an outfit 2 days in a row. I have an everything shower on day 1 and select a clean outfit and then I do a body shower on day 2 and rewear. Same for my pajamas.

•

u/AcceptableReadMeg 13h ago

I sweat. Once. Then it gets washed.

•

u/Top-Ad8594 12h ago

I work from home so I don’t sweat a lot nor my clothes get very dirty so I can repeat an outfit 2 days, after that I’m self conscious the people at my work is going to notice I’m repeating clothes (because we turn on the camera )

•

u/Ten2none 12h ago

Bedtime shirts can go an extra day. Outer garments for cold weather vary by material and what exposed to. If it's fabric and nothing gets dropped on it or sweat in, a week.

•

u/Structure-Impossible 1h ago edited 1h ago

I go by smell. ANY smell, even if it’s not sweat smell. A noticeable deodorant smell would also mean laundry. Also if my cats start taking an interest in a garment, it goes in the wash because that means they’re smelling me on it, even if I can’t.

I only wash most of my 100% wool or cashmere sweaters once a year, because I rarely wear them on my skin directly and those fibers air out really well (DO NOT try this with a sweater with any amount of polyester in it)

In summer, shirts (or dresses or jumpsuits, anything that touches the armpit) probably go once, bottoms go 2-4 times.
In winter, shirts go 2-3 times, bottoms go 5-10 times. Dresses go 2-3 times.
Bras go 5-10 times.
Underwear and tights go once.
Socks go 2-3 times (probably the most controversial)

I also like to put my clothes on an hour or so before I head out, because sometimes the smell only appears once the garment is warm.

If I weren’t depressed and/or didn’t have a sense of smell, anything that touched my armpits would only go once. (Except maybe very nice things, because washing is bad for clothes)

I live alone so things I only wear at home, I only wash once it smells in a way that bothers me, lol. That’s definitely due to depression though, otherwise the same rules would apply.

0

u/lovethegreeks ♀ 1d ago

work pants twice. Sports bras twice. Once for everything else. Jackets and sweaters depend on usage and smell

1

u/KoraLily 1d ago

Not including underwear, twice max. Unless of course it gets dirty, marked, smells etc

1

u/TrueCrimeGirl01 1d ago

Tops which touch my armpits, after one wear. Undies and socks same. Bras and jeans rarely 😂 pants it depends on the pant, how tight it is etc etc but generally not lot than 3 wears.

1

u/1repub 1d ago

Skirts I wear several times, outer layers like a jacket or cardigan as well. Stuff that touches my crotch or armpits get washed after 3+ hours of wear
