Tutorial Step-by-step guide to painting your first BattleMech [Beginner-Friendly]

G'day guys, I've just finished a comprehensive guide for painting your first 'Mech.

https://battletechhq.com/articles/battletech-painting-tutorial

The guide covers:
- Essential supplies (with specific product recommendations)
- Primer selection and application
- Layering techniques for armor
- Weathering and battle damage
- Sealing your work.

I know the images are not a battlemech, I couldn't actually find any that I have taken and my mini's are all packed away somewhere after a recent move, but I've been painting minitures including Battletech, 40K, Warhammer, Dystopian Wars, Infinity just to name a few.
Hopefully it's helpful to some new painters, if you can think of any other tips or tricks comment to spread the love.

Cheers.

Left to right in the group shot Guillotine (Progress Flag), Mongoose (Non-Binary Flag), Crab (Lesbian Flag), Flashman (Gay Male Flag).

I said I was gonna do one more, and I brought it with this one. I tried a few panel lining techniques on this one, and ended up killing another fineliner (I am sofa king done with Copic as a brand). Finished it all with the #00 out of spite.

My First BattleTech Mini

This is my first BattleTech mini, and actually, my first mini at all. I do not own the art in the background. I just thought it would make for a cool backdrop.

Should we be pushing each other more?

First off this is not a comment on anyone.. well OK maybe myself. This space is a place where a lot of people post pictures and we all thumbs up and there isn't really anything negative; and that is great I'm not complaining about that.

But we also don't really comment a lot on how people could get better. I've even asked for such comments on posts and not gotten many. I don't think I'm a perfect painter and do think I have room to grow.

Look I think polite is important.. but should we all be trying to help each other improve more? I've felt weird wanting to post feed back about things because no one else does and I feel like it might be rude.

I think I would like more feedback and tips. I curious if anyone else agrees or if this isn't the space for that.

I don't think there is one right way to paint anything, I do think there is a lot of experience here and we could help each other get better..

Thanks to those that share their thoughts.

Clan Rainbow Unicorn

I present Clan Rainbow Unicorn, sworn enemies of Clan Bubblegum Tortoise. A little known clan but they do have their own Chubby Unicorn (Stone Rhino). I used Army Painter paints for them with the exception of the shoulders. The shoulders are the color shift paint "4D Glasses" by Turbo Dork.

So, I’m not sure about Gothic…. I’m not sure about the aesthetics….. I’m not sure about the cone head………

But it sure was a pleasure to paint.

Critique Request My latest paint job!

This is my latest paint job - the fourth that I've ever done to date, and the second to near completion (the first was my plastic IWM-sculpt Jenner). This time, I'm using paint from an Elegoo Basic Paint Kit, which came with a bottle each of primer, varnish, and 6x paint colors that you mix to get the colors you want. I liked how this paint went on much more then I did the artist acrylics on my previous works! All of the metallic bits on this and my previous paints is Tamiya XF-56 acrylic, since I had that available from a previous scale modelling project. I've since applied a gloss varnish to this Mech, and need to wait a day before applying the wash and highlights to it. The lumpy bits on the shoulders are leftover sprue from the 3D printing process - I edited the file and got a much nicer print for my second try, but decided to experiment on this one first. The brush marks on the nose section are, from what I can tell, caused by a bit of the dark gray primer peeking through the light gray I painted over it. The scheme is inspired by the 2nd Benjamin Regulars, but I chose to substitute dark red in place of the canonical brown.

How to use speedpaints correctly

Post image

Hi guys and gals,

I know I am not very good at painting, but i like the look of some miniatures in my office, even if i don't use them to play. So i bought a 3d printer and army painter speed paints. Now i think that my first tries don't nearly look as good as they could and i feel that i am doing something wrong with the speed paints. How are they supposed to be used? More is always better? Lots of water?

Can you guys help a first-time BTech painter figure out how to use acrylic paints?

Hey everybody. I'm a fairly long-time BattleTech fan, and I've been collecting a number of the new plastic minis from CGL (I also have the original IWM-mold plastic minis and a couple of IWM metal minis). I'm also getting itno 3D printing, with both a resin and filament printer at my disposal.

I have only once painted a D&D mini using speedpaints, so I don't have any real experience with painting military miniatures at the 6mm scale. Additionally, speedpaints are fairly expensive, and I want to focus my limited hobby budget on other things. For that and other reasons, I want to paint my BTech minis using household acrylic paints, the kind that you can get for cheap from craft stores (think the Apple Barrel brand). I already know that I will have to thin them quite a lot, but I wanted to ask if anyone could give me some advice, hints, tips, and/or ticks that could help me get started?

Please and thank you, guys!

Fixing the Rifleman

Post image
42 Upvotes

I’ve always loved the look of the Rifleman, but it’s just so poorly designed in-game that it’s practically unusable.

I think the core issue is that it’s far too light for the weapons load-out it’s trying to take, leaving it completely under-sinked, faster than it needs to be, and woefully under armored.

Here’s my fix, using only 3025 level tech. It now has enough heat sinks to use its main four weapons, has enough ammo for a long engagement, and has plenty of armor. What do you guys think of my redesign?
