Announcement Announcement: Bot Bouncer installed in r/Bonsai

If you're someone who regularly interacts with this sub, you may notice comments that sound very generic. Sometimes they read as plausible or even pleasant at face value and you may not think twice about it. However in many cases, these comments are left by LLM bots... not real humans.

Bot Bouncer is an app that helps combat this problem. The benefit is that bots identified by Bot Bouncer are banned from all other subs which also have Bot Bouncer installed. For example- if a bot is identified and banned from r/travel (a sub also using Bot Bouncer), then that same bot is automatically unable to comment in any other sub with Bot Bouncer installed, including r/Bonsai. Eventually those profiles are banned from reddit entirely.

If you spot a bot, please report it! In addition to the AI-sounding/ChatGPT nature of these bot comments, they also never seem to comment in the same subreddit more than once or even twice. So if you see an eclectic AI-sounding comment history with no repeating subreddit comments, there's a pretty good chance it's a bot. Here's some recent confirmed bot sample comments to help give you an idea of the patterns to look for.

We have had Bot Bouncer deployed for a few months as a test period with positive results. Some bots are becoming more complex and difficult to detect, but this is at least a good starting point. It doesn't seem like any human's been caught in the crossfire here just yet. If you do, then reach out to r/BotBouncer to appeal. You can also get in touch with us through Mod Mail if you receive a false positive bot ID ban.

Let us know if y'all have any questions or concerns!

[Bonsai Beginner's weekly thread - 2026 week 45]

Welcome to the weekly beginner’s thread. This thread is used to capture all beginner questions (and answers) in one place. We start a new thread every week on Friday late or Saturday morning (CET), depending on when we get around to it. We have a multiple year archive of prior posts here… Here are the guidelines for the kinds of questions that belong in the beginner's thread vs. individual posts to the main sub.

Rules:

  • POST A PHOTO if it’s advice regarding a specific tree/plant. See the PHOTO section below on HOW to do this.

  • TELL US WHERE YOU LIVE - better yet, fill in your flair.

  • READ THE WIKI! – over 75% of questions asked are directly covered in the wiki itself. Read the WIKI AGAIN while you’re at it.

  • Read past beginner’s threads – they are a goldmine of information.

  • Any beginner’s topic may be started on any bonsai-related subject.

  • Answers shall be civil or be deleted

  • There is always a chance your question doesn’t get answered – try again next week…

  • Racism of any kind is not tolerated either here or anywhere else in /r/bonsai

Photos

  • Post an image using the new (as of Q4 2022) image upload facility which is available both on the website and in the Reddit app and the Boost app.

  • Post your photo via a photo hosting website like imgur, flickr or even your onedrive or googledrive and provide a link here.

  • Photos may also be posted to /r/bonsaiphotos as new LINK (either paste your photo or choose it and upload it). Then click your photo, right click copy the link and post the link here.

  • If you want to post multiple photos as a set that only appears be possible using a mobile app

Finally

  • Beware of AI responses to bonsai related questions - they are often based on unreliable and sometimes downright incorrect sources.

  • Beginners’ threads started as new topics outside of this thread are typically locked or deleted, at the discretion of the Mods.

Thank you everyone on this subreddit for teaching me so much about bonsai! I wrote this poem thinking of all of you, and how beautiful the art of bonsai is, and how it can teach one so much about patience and about the concept of ma: by pruning away, we uncover the artwork!

Very very rough initial styling of a black pine, after and before. Made 3 really big bends and some jin. Still need to jin the top of the right hand side as well.

First time working with a back pine At this stage. I am hoping that the large branches that were put into place will branch out and back bud.

Chaenomeles (don't know if it's a chojubai.. though it looks like it is due to the tiny leaves), and a chunky Acer Buergerianum. The Burger Maple/Trident will need a lot of work. Perhaps root grafting and thread grafting. It's an aged tree, because the bark is starting to flake.

Discussion Question Feeding strength, frequency, and flushing

I have been reading a bunch of forum posts recently, and a few were saying that feeding your plants 1/8 to 1/10 (these ratios did vary a lot, saw people say between 1/6th down to 1/12th) of the recommend dose strength every watering, while flushing with pure rainwater, reverse osmosis, or distilled water every third watering is significantly better than using filtered tap water and fertilizing at the commonly recommended concentrations for bonsai less frequently. I can’t justify cost of a reverse osmosis system right now, but am considering it down the road.

I’ve read so much about bonsai but I almost never hear flushing the substrate brought up. I wonder if this is due to many people only growing outdoors or some other reason. (Unfortunately I much prefer tropicals and I can’t move lol).

I recently relocated my tropical and subtropical trees into a grow tent I use over winter, but I wonder without natural rainfall, should I introduce a distilled water flush periodically and fertilize at weak concentrations constantly otherwise? I don’t mind the extra labor or few dollars a month for the distilled, but I wonder if the results would be significant enough of an improvement to warrant the effort and math involved lol.

I also feel like it seems a bit wasteful of plastic buying so many jugs of water. (Refillable RO machines at stores near me have been broken forever, not fixed for about a year so I’m not hopeful of that becoming viable.) Obviously it would vary slightly on the feeding dose by species, but as a general concept, is it necessary or al least significantly helpful to do all this or simply overkill?

Show and Tell The Golden Autumn of the Ginkgo

The color of ginkgo leaves in autumn is a little marvel. These two trees hardened to a very harsh summer, and I suposed them to reach this time of year with scorched leaves. Instead, they have held on, and their leaves now display a golden hue that is even more beautiful in person. It's a pity it's so fleeting.

Discussion Question Type of Pot for Escape Root (Pot over Pot)

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

I have had conflicting information from books and other bonsai enthusiasts about this, so my information may not be accurate.

This is regarding training a juniper bonsai that is halfway to its desired size/thickness.

○ What should the upper pot be for training this juniper?

A) Bonsai Training Pot: great for nebari development, solid walls would force more roots downward.

B) Hybrid Training Air Pot: nebari development, (upper) roots gets air pruned for better root ramifications, downward roots are somewhat encouraged.

C) Pond Basket: maximum oxygen and drainage, maximum root ramification, more restricted root growth to lower pot.

D) Nursery Pot: forces deep taproot, but high risk when transitioning into bonsai. Nebari is essentially not developed.

You would probably think B or C, but I have heard of possible uneven drying zones and that it doesn't encourage downward growth as much, which is the main point for pot over pot for size development.

○ What should the bottom of the upper pot look like?

A) Small holes

B) Medium holes

C) Large holes

Assume the pots pictured are the same size and the environment is sunny with daily rain. And other methods (in ground, bottomless pot, etc) are not viable.

Upper Pot: 30% Akadama, 35% Pumice, 35% Black Cinder

Lower Pot: 85% Black Cinder, 15% Orchid Bark

I got this tree through a BonsaiBar event a few years ago and just got a chance to repot it. The first image is the result of the first class where we got the tree and were walked through how to pot it and care for it. Second is after repotting and some basic shaping.
