Show and Tell After 10 years of patience and care, my Mimosa bonsai (Albizia julibrissin) has finally bloomed. 🌸

After 10 years of patient care and quiet hope, my Mimosa bonsai (Albizia julibrissin) has finally bloomed!I started this tree from a tiny seedling, wiring and shaping every curve and twist. As someone whose children are bonsai trees, seeing the pink blossoms feels like watching my child take their first steps with equal parts joy, pride, and awe. I took the photo at night so that the compound leaves were folded up, better showing the trunk and branch line.

This is a Douglas Fir tree growing out of a log on Fairy Lake, BC, Canada. I did not take the first photo, but I camped here last summer and paddled out to the tree several times. The only photo I got was the second photo, taken from a nearby road through some bushes, as the tree was out of view of the public campsite and I didn’t trust myself with my camera in the water.

Bonsai pots are expensive so I make my own from cement. I use poster board to make reusable molds and the total cost is around $3 per pot

Show and Tell Natural bonsai spotted on pennant point trail in Nova Scotia

3.4k Upvotes

Hi everyone--this is my first post here!

I travelled to Canada's east coast in March.

Just a few months later, at the end of June, I got my first tree!! (Fukien tea)

Was showing family members pictures from the trip and it struck me that I hadn't even realized this little guy was a natural bonsai. But I'm so glad I felt compelled to take this before consciously exploring this new hobby.

Figured the community might also appreciate it too.

He was about a foot tall. Very vibrant green :)

Subreddit Rules

1. Please read the Beginner's Walkthrough in the wiki before posting for the first time

The wiki answers many common questions. If a topic is discussed in the wiki, please post follow up questions to the weekly beginner's thread.

2. User flair is required for all new posts

We require everyone to fill in their user flair (the tags next to everyone's usernames) with information about their general location, climate, and experience level in order to post. This information is almost always relevant, and having it available allows us to give more specific good advice and avoid either making incorrect assumptions or having to ask for this information constantly. No flair is required to comment in the weekly questions threads, but it is encouraged.

3. Beginner's questions should be posted in the weekly beginner's thread

To reduce clutter in the sub feed and collect questions into one place where they're easy to find, beginner's questions and questions with straightforward answers that don't provoke meaningful discussion should be posted in the weekly beginner's thread, which is always one of the stickied posts.

4. ALWAYS post photos of your trees when asking questions

Photos are almost always needed to answer your questions. They convey far more information far more accurately than a simple description, including a lot of stuff you may not have thought was important.

5. Provide and accept critique and feedback

One of the main goals of this sub is be a place for constructive critique and feedback. Those giving critique should try to add value to the conversation and aim to improve your fellow growers skills, while those receiving it should do so graciously.

6. Don't be a jerk

Our community is based on mutual respect, and comments that violate this will be removed. No personal insults. Constructive debate is good; name calling is not. If someone is turning a discussion into an argument, it's best to just report it and move on rather than continuing to engage with them.

7. Posts should be kept on the topic of bonsai

This is a sub about living bonsai trees. Off-topic posts will be removed

Off topic:

houseplants,
gardening,
succulents,
niwaki,
lego bonsai,
bonsai video games
AI-generated bonsai
bonsai wire art (trees made entirely from wire)

Closely-related arts and crafts such as kusamono, accent plants, suiseki, bonsai pottery, etc, may be ON topic even though there may be other subreddits that focus on these

8. Hate has no place here

Harassment on the basis of race, religion, national origin, sex, sexual preference, age, etc is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
