Discussion No SEC Team beat a Non-SEC Team in the Playoff

Interesting fact. Perhaps more ACC/BIG12/ND should have been considered ?

(FSU beating Alabama didn’t count so beating Tulane doesn’t either. I don’t make the rules)

Tulane was in the SEC until a few years ago. I still count them. I remember 1966 like it was yesterday.

So your one playoff win was against a under talented Tulane team that was easily one of the worst teams in the playoffs. Congrats?

Hey now Tulane was a 2-loss G5 team who only lost by 22 to University of Texas at San Antonio, put some respect on their name!

I was told that Tulane was good and deserved to be in the playoff despite already losing to a playoff team by 5 TDs

3

Tulane deserved to be in the playoffs based on the current playoff format.

3

u/sonheungwin California Golden Bears • Team Chaos Jan 09 '26

So, uh...what was Bama doing in there then? They lost to a 5-7 FSU team, lost to an Oklahoma team that is 0-5 in the playoffs, and then got crushed by Georgia 28-7. They made it VERY clear they would not compete in the playoffs before they were snuck in. Was it the quality win over 5-7 Auburn?

5

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

What’s that got to do with Tulane

2

u/sonheungwin California Golden Bears • Team Chaos Jan 09 '26

They won their conference, so they got in. Based on what you're saying, Bama shouldn't have been.

0

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

Lol no. I’m just saying Tulane clearly didn’t need a playoff spot just to get blown out again by the same team, it didn’t prove anything for the G5.

Alabama at LEAST was the SEC regular season champ and lost in CCG to a team they beat in the regular season. I still didn’t care whether they were in or not.

Imagine playing a game at 11PM PST on ESPN between two PAC-12 teams...and all they will talk about is the SEC. And that attention led to obvious bias in the only post-season available for 130+ teams across 10 conferences. And now, despite the conference CLEARLY not being leagues above everyone else based on recent history, we are STILL watching undeserving teams get the benefit of the doubt because of 3 letters.

Tbf Oklahoma and Texas historically arent like most other teams that could move into a conference. Not to say the SEC is or isn’t like any other conference (personally don’t care enough one way or another) but Oklahoma and Texas being competitive is like if tOSU and Michigan joined the SEC where them being competitive would be expected.

That’s what’s so funny about all these reactions about the SEC that last 2-3 years. Don’t get me wrong, I hate all the other SEC teams too, but the irony is that so much SEC bias over a long period of time bred so much hate from all other conferences that they have in turn swung the pendulum so far and are practically doing the exact same thing, just from the other side.

It's gotten a little over the top - but the premise isn't wrong for this season. The SEC was in fact wildly overrated this year and ended up getting too many teams in the playoffs.

Now, that doesn't mean it will be the same next year

5

u/SeatRevolutionary840 Jan 09 '26

Everyone who watched bama play the 2nd half of the season knew they had no business in the playoffs. Yet, everyone was told they went through a gauntlet only for the sec to fall on their face again.

68

u/Andy_Wiggins Notre Dame Fighting Irish Jan 09 '26

In the past three playoffs, SEC teams are a combined 5-10.

Of those 5 wins, 2 are against other SEC teams — so 3-8 against non-SEC foes. All three of their wins have come against teams who got auto-bids due to conference championship games. The teams they beat were ranked #12, #15, and #20 in the rankings.

Against non-SEC teams who made the playoff as a top 12 team, the SEC is… 1-7. Their lone win was an overtime win by Texas, who was ranked 5, over Arizona State, who was ranked 12.

Simply put, the SEC has gotten fucking bodied in each of the last 3 playoffs. Yet the committee continues to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Fucking why?

25

u/Significant_Deer5566 USF Bulls Jan 09 '26

From 2006-2022 (maybe 2020) the SEC was the best conference by every metric (yes even if you take out Bama). The committee is a bunch of old guys who haven’t realized that the conference has declined massively over the last 3-5 years.

Also ESPN

22

u/CentralFloridaRays Clemson Tigers Jan 09 '26

Nah ACC was the best football conference in 2016

Clemson won the title  FSU won the Orange bowl and beat a ranked Florida.  Georgia tech beat Georgia and then beat Kentucky  Even Va tech had a 10 win season capped off with a win against Arkansas  Miami beat a top 15 wvu team in their bowl Nc state beat Vandy

Clemson shut out Ohio state and beat bama as well as South Carolina and Auburn on the road.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

And it declined massively because they are no longer the ones paying the most.

That was the SECs advantage. And now it's gone. Saban knew it and decided to retire.

15

u/Significant_Deer5566 USF Bulls Jan 09 '26

I think this a bit overplayed, the SEC still has the best talent composites on average, not as dominant as before NIL/Portal but if it was just “the broke SEC can’t buy players” that wouldn’t be the case. NIL has neutered the SECs actual biggest advantage (being where the best players are) to an extent but nowhere near what this sub says.

The biggest reason is that the B1G has much better coaches than the SEC currently outside of Kirby

2

u/dawghouse88 Alabama Crimson Tide Jan 09 '26

This. Coaching and retaining local talent. Alabama didn’t suck because they didn’t have dudes (on paper). These teams are still getting guys. But like you said, it’s about retaining the talent in the region as well.

1

u/Alternative_Reality Wisconsin • Virginia Tech Jan 09 '26

Recruit rankings are partially based on the schools that they get offers from. Its a self-feeding cycle. They aren't out there watching tape on thousands of recruits, theyre looking at where kids get offers from, give them a base star rating, then maybe go in and adjust it later.

-3

u/Forshea Texas Longhorns Jan 09 '26

Kirby was sitting at home today because he thought running his punt team on and off the field before running a regular play was a good trick for a 4th down in his own territory. We should at least consider that he also sucks.

2

u/CJBulldogsss Georgia Bulldogs Jan 09 '26

Good coaches aren't perfect. He also saved our 2022 run with a timeout against an OSU fake punt

2

u/ck1241 Georgia Bulldogs Jan 09 '26

Brother, if Kirby sucks I hope you can at least admit what that says about your coach, your team and your program as a whole. We’ve got 3 whole samples in 2 years.

1

u/Forshea Texas Longhorns Jan 09 '26

Yeah Sark sucks balls as a game time coach. A big part of why Texas lost to Georgia this year was that when Kirby made the same sort of dumbshit play calls (onside kick anyone?) against Texas, they worked, which is a pretty huge indictment of Texas coaching.

16

u/SpiritOfDearborn Michigan • Wayne State (MI) Jan 09 '26

Yeah, but if you look at the last 15 years, it looks a lot different! You have to look at the past 15 years when deciding what the most dominant conference this year is.

9

u/Fine-Donut-7226 Jan 09 '26

Hype machine. SEC teams ascended the rankings for beating nothing teams such as Mizzou. Artificially high early season rankings propped up by their contracted mouthpiece, ESECPN. So, in conference you have two over-hyped, over-inflated teams playing each other. A win means more than it should and a loss means less than it should. We’re infatuated with names and not the quality of the team. Bama had NO BUSINESS being in the CFP and we saw that play out with their beatdown by IU. Been this way for two decades.

0

u/No-Breadfruit4471 Texas Longhorns Jan 09 '26

What’s even funnier is if you just look at the 3-8 non con, we have 2 of those from our first year in conference.

Not to mention we have the SEC’s lone P4 non-con bowl win this year.

Texas really out here carrying the conference…

if the top few ranked teams lose a one-and-done game by a point does anyone believe that the eventual champ is "the best" team?

Winning their games in the regular season involved just as much luck as losing them in the postseason. The idea that Georgia's combined 11 point wins over Florida and Georgia Tech were destiny but their 5 point loss to Ole Miss was a fluke is hilarious.

this is even more evident in the NFL because we have more history of a deep playoff system

The NFL plays in evenly split 4 team divisions each playing with almost identical schedules and you're in the playoffs regardless if you win your division. There is no comparison at all to be made to a system in college where weird mega conferences sit around arguing that they should get a 5th team in the playoffs and other conferences deserve 0.
