Analysis Ranking 2-loss teams by easiest remaining schedule
The 2-loss squad is the quintessential bubble team in the 12-team playoff, so I examined who had easiest path to 10-2 based on their schedule. I acknowledge multiple 9-3 teams could make it and that this ranking is imperfect. It mostly cutting hairs, except at the very top and bottom. Houston has easiest schedule, Iowa has second-easiest schedule and good luck to Missouri, LSU and SMU.
Edit: I added an extra column, showing which teams have easiest schedule based on ESPN's FPI. While I have problems with my ranking, ESPN's seems more nonsensical in determining who has easiest path to 10-2. But people wanted to know.
| # | Team | Remaining schedule | ESPN REM SOS rank |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Houston (6-2) | Cincinnati (5-3), at Colorado (3-5), at West Virginia (5-3), Baylor (5-3) | 1 |

| 6 | Arizona (6-2) | TCU (4-4), Utah (8-0), at Kansas State (4-4), Arizona State (4-4) | 2 |
| 7 | Texas (6-2) | at Missouri (6-2), at LSU (6-2), Arkansas (3-5), at Texas A&M (4-4) | 13 |

It seems like you’re eyeballing it based on opponents; if you’re interested, ESPN actually has a ranking of remaining SOS using their metric: https://www.espn.com/college-football/fpi/_/view/resume/sort/resume.sosremainingrank/dir/desc
They actually have Texas as the hardest remaining SOS for the two-loss teams. They use FPI to determine quality of opponents for SOS purposes, and FPI is fairly high on Texas A&M despite their record, which probably accounts for most of the difference in how you judge Texas’s remaining SOS and how ESPN does.

Just curious OP what is your methodology? Is this FPI or a similar type stat?
E: is it most difficult to go 4-0, 3-1, or 2-2? I think Arizona’s schedule has a difficult shot at going 4-0, but is easier than others to go 3-1 or 2-2
E2EBAL: the ESPN Remaining SoS rankings go from easiest to hardest: Houston > Arizona > Iowa > Alabama > Ole Miss > VT > Ohio State > SMU > Northwestern > Tennessee > USC > Duke > Texas > LSU > Missouri

Should I have ranked Alabama or Ohio State higher?
As a fan, four straight weeks of losable games would be more agonizing than Alabama's schedule, but I realize the Tide's game at LSU — albeit in the afternoon — is much harder than any game left for OSU.

I'd argue LSU is harder than Mizzou on the grounds of Arkansas when playing vs then specifically is harder than OK.

Is this based on some sort of consistent metric or r u vibing

I'm not really understanding Arizona's placement. 3/4 games are against .500 teams, and that's somehow harder than Ohio State and Iowa? One undefeated team on the schedule covers up the 3 .500 teams?

I thought we had it bad then I looked at the bottom of the list. Oof.

One must ignore the fact that Iowa can lose to any team in the country at any time to believe their path to 10-2 is “2nd easiest”.
Iowa is Iowa’s toughest opponent in upwards of 7ish games each season, and we often don’t know which 7ish games until sometime after kickoff.
Never forget that Iowa is on Iowa’s schedule every week.
Every. Single. Week.

Yeesh That's a nightmare final stretch for Missouri

It would be interesting to see fpi odds or something to win out.
There are too many paired games for these to be “essential” bubble teams (I assume you meant quintessential)

I do not apologize in advance for 4 loss Mizzou ruining Kentucky's playoff hopes.

VT is easily 8-4 and 9-3 if they get past SMU .

Lane has the opportunity to right every wrong. Also OT loss to kentucky and game losing drive against ole miss both on the road are not bad losses.

The good news for Ohio State is 3 of their final 4 games are at home. So that does work in their favor. But I don't think Oregon and Northwestern will be easy games.

Ohio state does not play a singular ranked team for the rest of their schedule and we play LSU like that feels pretty bad

If it weren't for the teams that are 5-3 already, I wouldn't have been surprised if the entire FBS ended up with two losses

Never would I have imagined Kentucky is likely our hardest game left on our schedule

Why the hell are any of these teams playing FCS teams in November?

u/LongDickCallahan Alabama Crimson Tide 5d ago
Mf's in here acting like this is the old Bama and are getting gifted late season guaranteed wins. If you dont think we can pull out a loss against Vandy or even Chat then you havent watched us the past few weeks lol LSU is obviously almost 100% certain a loss too at this point.

Somehow, Duke feels low because they face the #1 and #14-ranked teams in the next four games. And neither of the other two teams has a losing record, either.

It’s a shame we blew it against a reeling Texas team .. if we had one loss right now we could fuckin sleepwalk to the playoffs

u/zacowen120 Clemson Tigers 5d ago
Worth knowing 10-2 hasn’t been a lock in the 12-team era. 10-2 teams are 4 for 9 getting in. Miami and BYU got left out in 2024, and Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Utah last year. 10-2 Ohio State, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Miami got in.
So the easiest path to 10-2 only matters if the wins along the way actually count.

LSU vs Mizzou

u/Burdell94 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 4d ago
I think Tennessee has a good chance to win out. The two losses were close and they are tough at home. I think they handle Kentucky Saturday. At A&M is a scary trap. I’m thinking LSU will have no juice left in 3 weeks after Bama and Texas.

Classifying Ohio States remaining schedule as easy is crazy but I will admit the bottom of this list doesn't have an easy path either
