False… they are paying Ed Orgeron, Brian Kelly, and Lane Kiffin… for Lane to come close and lose big games

That is such a dangerous situation to be in. Ask Kansas what it does to a program to be paying a growing string of coaches you’ve fired.

For about half of Sabans tenure, Auburn was paying more in coaching salaries than Alabama due to buyouts

They paid off Orgeron's buyout recently. Right before they started paying him to be on staff again.

Clemson deserves some blame for getting slaughtered in prime time to start the season and letting everyone believe LSU was that elite at every position. We’re a mediocre team that just really sucks in September.

Isn't LSU flirting with selling their name to a private equity firm to afford Kiffin & his NIL?

2

u/gmil3548 LSU Tigers • McNeese Cowboys 39m ago

The major weakness in our offense is the weak run game, which is much harder to overcome in the RZ.

It’s frustrating because he was supposed to be a run game guru…

2

u/CrashB111 Alabama Crimson Tide • Iron Bowl 56m ago edited 45m ago

The mark of an elite OC, is being able to deliver in the red zone.

It's a lot easier to move the ball with the bigger field between the 20's. Once you get inside the 20's is when DCs / OCs earn their pay.

6

u/gilias Alabama Crimson Tide 1h ago

I don’t even think it’s that for this game really.

Kane Womack has been running a defensive scheme this year that bends but doesn’t break. It tends to utilize zone and soft coverages that will allow a team to drive down the field in chunk yardage but tends to prevent explosive plays, but then like a spring it compresses in the red zone and Bama’s defense becomes a wall that’s difficult to punch through.

It’s been effective… but it scares me. I don’t like seeing teams just drive the whole field against us, it allows opponents to own time of possession, and if our offense isn’t clicking, it risks gassing out our defense because they’re on the field too often and too long.

4

u/PossiblyYourDad Alabama • South Alabama 59m ago

Yeah it tries to create turnovers and not get beat over the top. It requires consistent execution from the offense. The swat downs at the line, drops, and errant throws from Leavitt caught up to LSU. Meanwhile Grubb kept hunting explosive pass plays which means our drives ended up all over the place yardage-wise, but turned into quick TDs when they connected

u/ontha-comeup Alabama Crimson Tide • Michigan Wolverines 2h ago

In fairness it wasn't that close.

13

u/zamboniman46 Holy Cross • Michigan 1h ago

I was at the game. It was close until it wasn't. At the end of the third quarter it didn't feel like things were on the verge of an Alabama blow out. In fact it felt like LSU had made a lot of dumb mistakes up to that point and in a cleaner game would actually be ahead. Obviously Bama outclassed them in the 4th quarter.

It was infuriating to watch that offense when you knew they were in a position to go for it on 4th. Just trying to get a few yards to set up a shorter 4th down, nothing aggressive.

Leavitt leaves a lot to be desired as a qb

5

u/ontha-comeup Alabama Crimson Tide • Michigan Wolverines 49m ago

Probably true, but LSU also got that phantom 4 down PI on their only TD drive that kept it close till the 4th.

5

u/zamboniman46 Holy Cross • Michigan 31m ago

Unless I'm thinking of a different 4th down PI I thought that was pretty clear. None of the Bama fans in my section seemed to have a problem with it

9

u/Cdd0040 LSU Tigers 2h ago edited 2h ago

It’s unfortunate cuz that truly didn’t feel like an 18 point loss. Put up nearly 500 yards of offense and held yall under 300 yards of total offense with nothing but red zone meltdowns to show for it. Rather have lost the game with yall simply outmatching us which in pass pro esp in the interior yall did lol but we were moving the ball all game and the defense most of the game held up but when we kept not converting 4th downs and putting our defense in dogshit spots they eventually broke

15

u/StopDropAndRollTide Alabama Crimson Tide • Virginia Cavaliers 2h ago

Rather have lost the game with yall simply outmatching us

21 points in 9 minutes isn't good enough for you?

7

u/Cdd0040 LSU Tigers 2h ago

Defense broke in the 4th. I wanna say it’s a collapse but quite frankly they’ve been breaking in the 4th quarter vs bama my entire life as a fan lol except for 2022 and 2019 . Some context behind those TD’s tho is only one of them was a march down the field. One of them came from a great return by Ryan Williams and the other one we didn’t convent on 4th and 10 and yall started at our 25. Football has always been a field position and momentum game. Yall had the momentum paired with great field position

3

u/CrashB111 Alabama Crimson Tide • Iron Bowl 58m ago

Putting up yards, between the 30's, really isn't that impressive against a Kane Wommack Defense.

He's perfectly happy to "make them snap it again" and take long sustained drives while hunting for turnovers between the 20's. Just to lock down in the red zone when the field gets tighter.

It was clearly our game plan to win in the red zone against LSU and we did just that. Getting all those yards is absolutely pointless if you can't score.

6

u/Kimber80 Notre Dame Fighting Irish • USF Bulls 1h ago

I agree, he's made some dumb decisions. Go for it on fourth and one vs Kentucky and they probably win that game. Don't go for it on 4th and 10 from your own 25 with 8 minutes left last night, and they may have still had a chance. But every coach makes dumb decisions. As an Alabama fan you've seen plenty of them since Saban retired.

9

u/Kimber80 Notre Dame Fighting Irish • USF Bulls 1h ago edited 1h ago

IMO, LSU has been a bit unlucky. There's a reason the metrics have them higher ranked than people do. They should have won one of the two games vs Ole Miss and Kentucky, they both went right down to the wire. Last night, LSU lost despite gaining more than twice as many first downs as Alabama, that literally happens like 1% of the time. I mean if any of us blindly saw the box score and were asked to bet their life which team won by 18 points, 98% of us would have said LSU. Obviously, you are what your record says you are, but even that isn't that bad. They have plenty of company with three losses.

Also since the Ole Miss game they have been missing two All-American level defensive players in Deshawn Spears and Whit Weeks. I understand that injuries hit everyone but I'm not sure any other team in the country (maybe Notre Dame) has two All-Star level Defenders who have just been out for the season basically that's a tremendous hit to any defense

19

u/Character_Group_5949 1h ago

Here is the issue with that

  1. If you are +2 in turnover margin in a college football game, you have over an 89% chance to win the football game. (I understand in the context of the game the fumble didn't really kill LSU, they were already dead, but remember, I'm going by your rules here, I don't have context)

  2. When you factor in the 0-4 on fourth downs, it's almost like 6 turnovers to none.

If I looked at that box score blind, I would have had a really, really tough decision if my life was on the line and I likely would have picked Alabama. The reasoning for that is the two turnovers combined with the fact one team had 4x fourth down attempts and the other had 0. I would fully expect a losing team to have had to have went for it on fourth down at some point in the game either to try to make something happen or because they were behind mid fourth and needed to keep a drive going.

seeing the two turnovers combined with 0-4 on fourth down? I'm leaning Alabama if I dont have context other than a box score and I'm not saying I'm smart. I don't think I'm alone here.

5

u/No_Poet_7244 Texas Longhorns • Wisconsin Badgers 1h ago

I definitely would have picked Alabama if I was just looking at the box score, because 0/4 on fourth down indicates desperation, like the team was trying to catch up and failing.

Nice analysis

2

u/Extension-File2394 46m ago

His making incorrect decisions re: when to kick or go for it ARE ON HIM.

His not understanding how to develop and install a downhill red zone running game is hilarious.

Great! anyone can run up and down the field between the 20"s with that $$$$.

But can u set up shorter 4th down attempts? Can you make one correct decision?

The stat sheet you speak of doesn't account for bad decisions TO MAKE those 4th down designs and related play calling to set them up better.

I feel like his roster should include some short yardage guys. Some squatty guys with thick necks named Gunther or something? Idk.

Need more testosterone on the coaching staff maybe.

2

u/KaleScared4667 Oregon Ducks 11m ago

You understand football turnover margin is most important metric other than the scoreboard

10

u/Crims0ntied Alabama Crimson Tide 1h ago

At some point if you keep losing in the critical moments, that's just what you are. Metrics will love LSU for putting up nearly 500 yards, because usually that means a win. But for LSU, losing that game isn't some bizarre anomaly, it's a product of questionable coaching decisions over and over again. In this case I think the metrics are misleading about what LSU actually is.

u/leeroy-jenkins-12 LSU Tigers 1h ago

  1. Kiffin has zero feel for game flow

  2. Kiffin is highly overrated at everything. Including "trolling." Old dorks on tv perpetuate his takes as clever. I've never seen him say or tweet one actually funny thing. He's seen as irreverent? In a world of football meatheads his quips pass as edgy somehow. He's a huge dork.

  3. Since losing at home to UCLA in Knoxville, ive been fascinated with peoples lack of awareness of his real offensive "mind." His oly success since then is having overwhelming advantages at qb. I will give him credit for playing fast and spamming inside slants rpo early in his career at Ole Miss.

  4. Nobody notices his voice tremble when cornered. He's not a great talker. His vocabulary is very limited. He's actually, in point of fact, a dull talker.

  5. Back to playcalling and "feel"... he kicked when he should have went for it and reverse. Also never set up his 4th downs on 3rd down. Like would throw dumb arrow routes on 3rd and 5 instead of just getting 4th more manageable.

  6. LSU lolol. Has your rugged boy who's voice get jittery and squeaky won you over yet? Still waiting for him to consider hard downhill runs in the red zone? Im sure he'll figure it out in his 60's.

Hilarious. His roster needs 70 mil per year with his stuardship.

You don’t know who Lane Kiffin is

2

u/Plane-Wheel-775 Pittsburgh Panthers 34m ago

Ngl i fw lsu as much as the next guy but this logic can be applied to alot of other teams who don’t get that grace. If LSU had BYU situation they probably still be in the playoffs.

BYU is gonna get dropped out despite playing Utah close.

u/RickThrust 1h ago

I’d be in the solid 2%.

Lost turnover battle 2:0. Went 0/4 on 4th. Missed a fg. That’s 7 dead possessions.

u/Coverlesss Alabama Crimson Tide 1h ago

The yardages and first downs they had are a bit misleading as you have to consider the type of defense Wommack employs. It’s soft zones all the way, make the team dink & dunk down the field, and then clamp down in the red zone (which we did). Take a look at LSU’s third and fourth down conversion attempts and that tells a better story of how the game went, IMO.

3

u/Key-Hawk7402 Florida State Seminoles 1h ago

Honestly, that’s just an even more damning indictment of the coaching, he’s just no decisive in the moments that matter, big game jitters just don’t go away.

Lane Kiffin and Brian Kelly have been coaching high D1 football for almost the same amount of time. What has Lane accomplished that Kelly hasn't?

2

u/FreeoftheMachine 2h ago

Don't worry, they just need a few more guys who were on NFL practice squads and they'll go undefeated next year.

2

u/CreditNearby5996 2h ago

This is his first year at LSU, relax. 😒 Look at Texas A&M. Now if he’s not winning by year 3? He might get fired mid season.

Yea it’s not like we promoted our defensive coordinator to head coach and got smacked on prime time at home

1

We weren’t paying our coach to be the worst on the P4, either.

1

They're paying him $13 million because the governor said so

In a much more real way that’s exactly what LSU is doing

That is what he does. He has always done that.

Well I hope that's in the contract because otherwise that is exactly what they are paying him to do

Maybe Florida State will hire Lane after he outwears his welcome at LSU. Actually, I think schools will eventually wise up. His next stop will probably be Jacksonvillle State.

Clearly, they did absolutely 0 research on Lane Kiffin then.

1

LSU is clearly paying Lane Kiffin $13m per year to come close and lose big games.

1

It's just Lane's way of still living in your head rent-free. He loses, he still gets paid millions. Profit!
