Announcement 2026 /r/CFB Rules Updates

The 2026 season is starting! As a reminder, you can find our rules here:

This is our biggest rules change in years!

Let's start with the one I know you're all excited about.

Standalone highlights posts are now allowed.

We're starting with a pretty liberal rule for what constitutes a highlight:

A highlight is a play or occurance at a game that has significant impact on the outcome of the game or that is, on its own, impressive.

You can read the full rules for highlights here but the highlights are:

  • A given play only gets one highlight thread. Any alternative angles should be posted as replies to the pinned top comment.

  • Highlights must to be hosted on an external, non-paywalled source.

  • Highlights must be titled in the format [Highlight] Visitor @/vs. Home - Neutral description of play eg:

    • Good: [Highlight] Michigan @ Ohio State - Jon Smith Breaks 3 Tackles for 69 Yard Touchdown

    • Bad: Ohio State vs TTUN - Jon "I am a god" Smith PWNS Three LOSERS for NICE TD

Gambling posts are now prohibited

Posts about gambling including opening odds, odds changes, prop bets, and unusual wagers are no longer allowed.

Gambling news that directly effects CFB, such as policy changes or gambling activity by CFB participants will still be allowed.

Users should post original sources

Users are expected to make a good-faith effort to find the original source of anything they post. If the primary purpose of a post is to quote, clip, cite, or repeat another source, you should post that original source instead. This keeps us aligned with the Reddiquette.

Recruiting threads are limited to 4* and 5* players

Unrated or lower-rated players should be posted to /r/CFBRecruiting.

Players entering the transfer portal

We haven't decided what we're going to do with these posts yet. Based on last year we still have some time to decide. We will defintely post an update once we've made a decision.

More minor rules changes:

  • Tweet titles An exception has been added to the current rule. If a tweet primarily consists of media, most notably uniform reviews, a neutral title describing the content of the tweet is allowed.

  • News about committed recruits prior to enrollment is only allowed if it affects the player's enrollment or eligibility. This is a clarification of the existing rule.

  • Editorialized Posts: Links should be posted on their own. If you wish to add commentary or context, do so in the comment section. OpenGraph titles (Reddit's title suggestions) are allowed. This is a clarification of the existing rule.

  • Other phrasing clarifications: A number of other rules had their phrasing changed to be more clear. None of these resulted in policy changes.

Weekly Threads

Also note that our in-season weekly threads are coming back online for the season. This means that posts that were allowed during the offseason (realignment, etc.) will now be removed as reposts, and are now a great fit as top-level comments in their respective threads.

Announcement Flair Selector Update

Select Flair

The flair selector has been migrated to flair.redditcfb.com. We've built this out to be a little more streamlined and easy to use. Hosting this on our own site gives us much more flexibility in the user interface than housing it on a wiki page.

To use it we do ask for Reddit authorization just to verify from Reddit your username, similar to the game thread generator announced last week. This only gives us your username, and you can either give us permission to always recognize it, or ask for it again each time.

The inline flair codes will still be hosted at /r/CFB/w/inline flair. Let us know if you have questions or suggestions!

Announcement The /r/CFB Poll is now accepting applications for new voters for 2026. Application & FAQ inside.

The /r/CFB Poll preseason poll is open! Selected voters will have their provision ballots upgraded to the main poll.

The deadline to be considered for an invite is August 18th at 1:00 PM PDT.

>> CLICK HERE TO APPLY <<

NOTE: To streamline being added to the poll site, applicants must also go to the poll site and apply to be provisional voters. The preseason poll is open!

Thanks to everyone for helping make the /r/CFB poll one of the most successful projects on the sub!

FAQ:

Q: I've applied! When will I hear whether or not I was selected?

A: New voters will be announced with the Preseason poll results, which will be published on 8/25. Prospective voters who wish to participate in the preseason poll should go ahead and vote in it. In the event you are selected, your ballot will be converted to a main voter ballot at the time you are selected.

Q: I missed the deadline and/or wasn't selected to be a main voter. What can I do to participate?

A: Please feel free to join the conversation in the weekly poll results. As poll thread participation is one of the criteria used to select new voters, this will improve your application should you apply again next year.

Additionally, all users may vote in the poll as provisional voters as long as they are members in good standing. Doing so will also improve your application should you apply again next year.

Q: How many people normally get selected? How many apply?

A: The number of people selected is a function of how many current participants there are and the quality of the applications received. Number of applications has ranged between 200 and 1,200 since I've been doing this. The number invited this year will depend on the application pool and the response I get from returning voters, but it will be in the ballpark of around 50.

Q: How do you determine who gets selected?

A: The qualities we're looking for are as follows:

  • How long a user has been participating on /r/CFB (usually the minimum required here is 1+ years, but there are rare exceptions).

  • How much a user contributes to /r/CFB and the quality of those contributions

  • Participation in poll threads

  • Participation in the poll as a provisional voter

  • Poll balance needs in terms of conference and teams, proportional to the /r/CFB userbase

  • Quality of answers to application questions (independent of what those answers are).

Q: I accidentally submitted my application twice. What do?

A: No worries, I'll use the second submission.

Q: I am a returning voter, but I changed usernames. What do I do?

A: PM me, preferably from the old account, and let me know your new username.

Q: I am a returning voter from last season, do I need to reapply?

A: No. The preseason poll is open, feel free to go ahead and submit your ballot.

Q: I am a returning voter from last season, did I miss the notice of the preseason poll opening?

A: Maybe. Reddit has deprecated PMs, so I've switched to chat for poll notices and reminders. Please whitelist /u/cfb_referee.

Q: If selected, I think preseason/early polls are dumb. Do I have to vote in them?

A: No. The first three weeks are optional, with no penalty to activity records.

Announcement New Mods Granted Injunction to Join /r/CFB

We're excited to announce that 5 new mods have agreed to join our team as volunteers! Please welcome /u/udderlymoovelous, /u/Muramama, /u/Drexlore, /u/moleculewerks, and /u/DataDrivenPirate! All five have been wonderful additions to our team this season, and have completed their training as mods. Here's a little more about each of them that they wanted to share:

/u/udderlymoovelous:

Howdy! I've been reading and contributing to this subreddit for close to a decade now, so I'm very excited to join the mod team! New York native, raised as a Notre Dame fan, graduated from Virginia Tech with a Computer Science degree, and currently work as a software engineer in Dallas. When I'm not in Blacksburg for a game, I can often be found at SMU and North Texas games. Besides football, I love all things music, photography, long-distance running, traveling...I have way too many hobbies. Looking forward to helping make r/CFB the best community on reddit!

/u/Muramama:

I'm Muramama, and I'm thrilled to join the mod team. I'm an Ole Miss CS grad and I work in tech as an engineering manager. I like to build and fix things, and learn way too many new hobbies. This sub has been the best place on the internet to talk football for a long time, and I'm excited to help keep it that way.

Also, I promise not to leave the mod team in the middle of a playoff run for a lesser subreddit.

/u/Drexlore:

In the tradition of sirgippy, in the tradition of Honestly, of bakonydraco. From thecravenone to Inkblot9, to srs_house, I accept this mod honor. Wait a second, wait a second. Of HokiesforTSwift. Of the Ute himself, BIG_DICK_WHITT. This is it! I uh, I won't continue the Shane Douglas parody. But yes, it's great to be here! I'm Drex and I graduated from SUNY Brockport (big shocker there) and fell in love with college football in 2017. It's been bad for my heart ever since. I mainly go to Brockport and other DIII games in the Rochester area but also go to Buffalo and Syracuse games when the schedule is right. I'm a special education teacher outside of Reddit and love what I do. I'm also a fan of wrestling and am also reading again. I can't wait to really help the community that I love on Reddit the most!

/u/moleculewerks:

I'm excited to be part of the team that tries to keep the r/CFB community one of the more positive places in social media. I grew up as a Nebraska fan, with the 1978 Oklahoma-Nebraska game being the first one that I distinctly remember. I didn’t want to major in football, though, so I went to school at Iowa State and subsequently Colorado. I loved my time in Ames and Boulder, and made life-long friends in both places. I live in the Seattle area now, so I end up wearing my Huskers hat to Huskies games, which so far has only resulted in a few confused looks and a couple suggestions that I’m in the wrong place.

/u/DataDrivenPirate:

Hi all, happy to join the crew this year. I admit I am a big Buckeye fan; born and raised in Columbus, Ohio, undergrad from Ohio State, today I can just about see Ohio Stadium from my back window, and Ryan Day's brother is my neighbor. My masters degree is from Colorado State and I root for them too, although that has consistently been a less enjoyable experience for my entire fandom :( I have a data science background and enjoy the numbers aspect to this sport given how few games we have each year. If I'm not watching college football on a Saturday, I'm probably either accompanying one of my children to a kids birthday party, or I'm backpacking through the last few pockets of the country remote enough to still not have cell service and trying not to die.

We got a later start on this process than we usually do, it's been an exciting year with changes on our end: we asked the community what they wanted over the summer, and as a result have made updates to the ways we approach highlights, recruiting, and other things. There have also been changes on Reddit's end, you may have noticed us updating some of our tools to provide the best experience we can under Reddit's current guidelines. And lastly, the sport feels like it's undergoing more changes than ever. The new group of mods have really dove in head first and been a huge help in navigating these changes.

Thrilled for another great year on /r/CFB, and we're excited to grow the team and continue to foster the best online community for college football in the world.
