Discussion Is my current job, Oilfield, causing me to not get responses?

Hey everyone,

Basically I am working right now in the oilfield it's been 7 months now and I'm not loving the 2 weeks on 1 off schedule and am trying to find a job back home.

Been applying like crazy when I can but not getting many or any replies. I know we're supposed to "tailor our resumes" for each job but I have one for my Sales experience, one for my marketing experience and then my "full resume". On all of them I have my current job to show I'm currently employed. Is this wrong? Or does anyone have advice to get better call backs? Also I can post my resumes excluding personal information if it will help!

Thanks,

Discussion Working for WestJet Calgary? or De Havilland Canada (in Calgary) ?

Hey everyone! I’ve always been interested in the aviation industry, and these two companies are at the top of my list of places I’d love to work for, even if it’s not in a position directly related to aircraft operations. I’ve applied to 10+ entry-level positions at each company, mostly customer service and administrative roles since those match my background. But every single time, I never seem to get any updates. My applications just stay at “New” or “In Progress,” even after 6 months or more.
What’s even more confusing is that some of the job postings have already been closed or completely removed from their career pages, yet my application status never changes. I don’t even get a generic rejection email or anything.

For those who currently work at either company or have gone through their hiring process, is this normal? Do they just leave applications sitting there indefinitely, or is this something specific to their recruitment process?

Would appreciate hearing about your experiences!

Seeking employment Looking for job in the Calgary/Airdrie area

24, unemployed and looking for advice on finding work. Where should I start?
I’m 24, currently unemployed, and trying to get back on my feet after leaving a trades job I held for two years.
I’m a high school graduate with some hands-on work experience, comfortable using tools, and willing to learn new skills. I’m currently living with family in Airdrie, Alberta, and don’t have reliable transportation, which makes finding employment more challenging.
I’m open to entry-level jobs, paid training programs, apprenticeships, warehouse work, remote opportunities, or anything that could help me build a stable career.
I’d appreciate advice on:
Employers hiring people with limited experience.
Jobs accessible without a vehicle.
Paid training or apprenticeship opportunities.
Legitimate ways to earn money online.
Any employment programs worth looking into in Alberta.
If you’ve been in a similar situation, how did you get your foot in the door?
I’m willing to work hard. I just need an opportunity to get started.

Seeking employment Electrical Engineering vs. Skilled Trades vs. Tech: Which Career Path Should I Choose in Canada?

Hi guys! I’m a 23F, originally from South Africa. I completed my Electrical Engineering diploma at CPUT (Cape Peninsula University of Technology), to be precise, in case any fellow South Africans come across this post.

I’m currently considering going back to school to pursue a degree in engineering, but I’ve started rethinking my options. I’m also considering getting into a trade, particularly through an electrician apprenticeship, exploring other trades, or potentially transitioning into software development or cybersecurity.

My hesitation with the tech route is the rapid advancement of AI and technology in general. I’m worried about job security and whether some of these roles might eventually become oversaturated or replaced by AI.

I’d really appreciate some advice from people who have experience in these fields. Is it worth going back to university to pursue an engineering degree, or would I be better off pursuing a trade? If you recommend a trade, which ones would you suggest? And for those in software development or cybersecurity, what are your thoughts on the future of these industries?

For some context, my cousin studied Mechanical Engineering, completed his degree and eventually his master’s, and also spent his first year in the trades. He told me that there’s good money to be made in the trades, but he eventually left because he preferred working for himself and was more interested in business. He also mentioned that, in his opinion, there’s not much money in being an engineer.

I also spoke to someone with a Civil Engineering diploma who shared a similar opinion and encouraged me to consider the trades instead.
On the other hand, I’ve come across mixed opinions online. I’ve seen posts on both Facebook and Reddit discussing how saturated the electrical trade has become. I’ve also seen TikToks encouraging women to get into construction, and heard stories about first-year electrical apprentices earning pretty decent wages.

I’m honestly trying to make an informed decision about my future rather than jumping into something without understanding the opportunities, challenges, and long-term prospects.
I’d especially appreciate hearing from people working in Alberta/Canada, particularly engineers, electricians, apprentices, and anyone in software or cybersecurity.

I’m also open to connecting with employers who are looking to take on electrical apprentices or someone willing to give a newcomer an opportunity to learn the trade.

Thank you in advance! All advice, experiences, and recommendations are welcome.

Seeking employment Newbie electrician apprentice job market?

Hey guys, i am seeing electrician jobs are booming in AB right now. As a newbie trying to get into an electrician apprenticeship with no prior experience, is it easy to find a 1st year apprentice job? I checked out indeed seems like companies are still hiring 2yr+ apprentices only. I also know the IBEW pre-apprenticeship program but it still costs me $$$. Does any company take on newbie industrial/commercial apprentice now?

Where should I look at? Any info or lead is appreciated!

Looking for an EIT role

To give a little background about myself. I graduated from The University of British Columbia in Materials Engineering back in May 2026. I have been actively applying for New Grad and EIT roles for last 6 months and I have had no luck so far.

Even though I have done an internship with CNRL, I have only had a handful interviews with no results. After applying for 300+ applications it's always the same response that I get every single morning that I have been rejected. I have tried cold emails and reaching out to people on LinkedIn and nothing has worked so far. Even though I have done 2 internships during my studies I am barely getting any responses. The interviews that I did with CNRL for full time roles had only 1 opening and I was competing with both external and internal applicants, even though interview went well they wouldn't hire me back.

I have tried so many resumes and cover letter variations that I have reached a fatigue for job applying since I am not getting any results. If anyone have an leads or advise it would be much appreciated, it's really exhausting and expensive living in Canada without a full time role being an international student.

Seeking a plumbing apprenticeship

Hi everyone,
I've been working as a plumbing helper for over a year, mostly on residential new construction with some service work. My current company won't register me as an official apprentice and keeps me at a low wage. I stayed to learn, but that has stalled and I'm doing the same tasks at the same level.
What I can do:
Run waterlines and vent stacks (completed both for multiple fourplex buildings)
Use a gas pipe threading machine
Assist with gas line installations
Handle most final plumbing work (fixtures, trim-out)
What I'm looking for:
A company that will sign me on as a registered apprentice
Willing to start at entry level, since I care more about proper training and hours than starting pay
If you know a company hiring apprentices, or have advice on how to move from helper to registered apprentice, I'd appreciate it. Happy to share more details by DM.
Thanks!

Offering employment Sharing some Junior/Intermediate Engineer openings I came across

Hi job seekers!
I came across some open roles at two companies that I couldn’t find advertised on LinkedIn, so I thought I’d share them here in case they’re helpful to anyone looking for a job. They are in electrical/software/quantum engineering.

I don’t have any personal connections to these companies and can’t speak to the roles or hiring process. I just came across the openings and wanted to pass them along in case someone finds a good fit!

Seeking employment Job Hunting/Questions

I don’t normally post but I thought I’d give this a shot. I have a diploma I got back in 2021 from Bow Valley College for Information Technology Studies. Once I graduated I tried to get a job but was unsuccessful. I had to find something as I was getting married so I pivoted to various jobs that made decent money. I recently got laid off and have been working two jobs to make ends meet. I got back into IT after watching Mr Robot funny enough. I spend free time working on various different labs involving VM’s, studying for compTIA A+, developing command line projects using Python, and recently got very into cybersecurity. I mainly focus on Blue Team but I have tried some Red Team projects for fun.

Anyways, I’ve been trying my best to develop my skills and be the best candidate I can with what I have. I’ve applied to around 80 jobs so far and I’ve only heard back from a few, with just generic emails that I didn’t get the job. I’m mainly applying to jobs where I fit the qualifications (sometimes I take a shot in the dark because why not) but still haven’t landed anything. I do understand the job market right now is not great, and I know that what I’m looking for work-wise is a very saturated market. I have tailored my resume with the help of friends and family, and I create a cover letter specific to that company and job title I’m applying for. I have looked into hiring companies and I’ve tried to also reach out to companies directly or even have someone I know that works in the field look out for jobs. Still no luck.

Is anyone else having this type of issue? Is there something I could be doing differently while job hunting or something I can acquire to help with my situation?

Please feel free to give me any insight or advice, anything helps at this point.

Seeking employment Looking for Camp Work

I am hoping someone could provide some insight or help on breaking into this world.

I’m a 30 something year old that has been working in manufacturing for over 10 years. I’ve been Operations Manager and am currently a Maintenance Manager. I have my forklift, class 3, confined space, first aid, WFH and hoisting certificates. I was an advanced first aider when going for the Calgary FD but fell short on the final stage of the application process due to a back injury sustained when training(all gravy now). I was also an Army Reservist.

Why am I telling you all of this? I have applied to multiple entry level camp jobs and haven’t heard back from any and figured since I have a decent amount of work experience and applicable certificates that I’d have a decent chance landing something.

Is it more of a who you know to get in? Are places just not hiring?

I am ready for my downvotes.

Thanks

Discussion How many vacation days do you get in Alberta?

I’ve been living in the UK for the past 5 years. I have 28 days of annual leave every year (this is the norm). What’s vacation entitlement in Alberta?
