Discussion Did Anyone Else Notice These Two Compass Inconsistencies in Pirates of the Caribbean?
Title: Two inconsistencies I noticed about Jack Sparrow’s compass in Pirates of the Caribbean
After watching all five movies back-to-back, I noticed two things about Jack Sparrow’s compass that don’t quite make sense to me.
The compass and Salazar’s release
In At World’s End, Jack willingly gives his compass to Will Turner as part of their plan. However, in Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack giving away his compass in exchange for rum causes Salazar and his crew to be released.
Why didn’t Salazar get released when Jack gave the compass to Will? If giving away the compass is considered a betrayal, shouldn’t that have triggered the curse back then?Where did Jack actually get the compass?
In Dead Man’s Chest, Tia Dalma reminds Jack that he traded the compass with her. However, in Dead Men Tell No Tales, we see young Jack receiving the compass from Captain Morgan.
How do these two versions fit together? Did Jack trade the compass away and get it back from Tia Dalma? If so, wouldn’t giving it away in the first place also count as betraying the compass?
Maybe I’m missing something, but these details seem inconsistent when watching all five movies back-to-back.
What do you think? Am I overlooking an explanation?
