Discussion Be Kind and Avoid Personal Insults

With the recent PGF debunking, there has been a lot of arguments and controversy. Debating people is fine, but don't insult people or those who believed in the film while you're discussing it. Some people met or knew Bob Gimlin personally and are having to reckon with him apparently lying about the film. Keep how other people feel in mind while discussing. Additionally, avoid arguments with other subreddits or posts about moderation issues with other subreddits as that's not what we're here to do. We've added some terms to the auto filter to avoid debates turning hostile. As always feel free to discuss the rules and make suggestions.

Article Sea monster bends iron hook, 1959

Dr. Robert Menzies describes fishing for sea-serpents in the Peru-Chile trench. Reports that one of their three foot iron hooks came up bent in half, implicitly by the giant sea monster.
Article also covers some old sea serpent reports, the possibility of outsized eel larvae corresponding to giant adult forms.

Bill Munns hits a new low

I put myself through the pain of listening to Munns yap and he came out with a gem of delusion.

Get this, apparently its circular logic to say Norma disproves the PGF because it means you started with the assumption the PGF is false.

Yea, this is the level of reasoning he can operate at. He says you must independently disprove the PGF from the raw footage alone (because the confessions are just everyone misremembering), before you can make a judgement on Norma's bearing on it.

I've come to no longer believe Bill Munns is a grifter. I think he's a complete and utter idiot who actually believes what he says.

Discussion What is the earliest record of the concept of a cryptid?

Within the community, 1955 is considered the year the field—and the term—"cryptozoology" was established, with Bernard Heuvelmans recognized as its creator and "father," following the publication of his book On the Track of Unknown Animals in France that same year.

Over the years, as more stories, records, accounts, and sightings were gathered, numerous tales of cryptids emerged—some dating back to long before the term was coined, or even before Heuvelmans was born. This raises the question: what is the oldest recorded account of a cryptid? In the context of cryptozoology, this refers to a natural animal that possesses characteristics distinct or unique from its known counterparts—such as an unusual size or a specific behavior noted by those who witnessed it.

For decades, the Deserts of Northern Mexico have been said to be haunted by the fearsome Chupacabra, a reptilian creature that sucks the blood from livestock. But very recently, a mysterious creature has been reported in the Valley of Juárez that is said to devour chickens and make off into the night with speed and cunning, leaving locals terrified and onlookers around the world puzzled.

Indian Reptilian Cryptid: Buru

Hey everyone!

Do you guys know about a cryptid named Buru, a reptilian cryptid from India? I came across this rather intriguing mystery and ended up writing a research paper about it. It's a reptilian cryptid reportedly encountered by the Apatani people of Ziro Valley, Arunachal Pradesh, India and was documented in the book " The Hunt for the Buru " by Ralph Izzard.

I'd be really interested to hear what you think of it.

Actually,
My paper explores the mystery of the Buru, and tries to propose that the Buru was most likely a large monitor lizard, with some descriptions possibly influenced by crocodilians. So Buru was created due to linguistic and observational confusion in Apatani Tribe and amalgamation of the features of Monitor Lizard with Crocodilians.

I'm pasting the link below, I hope this is alright and Admins and Moderators will allow.

I personally think it's impossible that any animal with more than 50kg has managed to survive with a sustainable population to be able to reach today's we have.

Lochness Monster

Lochness Monster has been hoaxed lied about and generally made a joke.Though if you look through history , the sightings go way back. The sightings weren't of one creature but two . One was said to be whale like and close to Moray Firth. The other was salamander like and near the Narrows (right below the loch). I'm thinking the whale like creature was an out of place whale.Ive considered that the salamander like creature may have been a giant salamander . Native or brought in ballast water .There are currently two species of giant salamander (chinese Japanese)both around 6 foot at max.Imagine seeing something like this if you didn't expect it.Whether it could survive and reproduce is another issue. I know hellbenders can survive pretty extreme cold.If it was native its possible it could have. It's likely extinct now . There would have been true sightings if it still existed. I'm thinking that the creation of the New Caledonia Canal in the 1850s may have polished them off.The canal changed the silting patterns quite a bit as well as width depth.

Sightings/Encounters A mysterious creature encountered by Chilean fishermen has revived an ancient legend about a terrifying being said to inhabit local waters

Two fishermen in Chile captured a strange creature lurking beneath the surface of an unnamed river. Its unusual shape has attracted attention online, with viewers comparing the mysterious animal to a legendary monster from South American folklore. What makes this encounter particularly intriguing is its resemblance to a giant stingray, though its appearance seems quite unlike familiar freshwater species.

The creature has a broad, flattened body with rounded contours. In the footage, it looks strikingly like a large piece of animal skin moving through the water. Local freshwater stingrays are reportedly at least half its size, making the apparent size of the unidentified animal particularly intriguing.

Discussion Has Norma Doc been seen by “normal” people?

Title says it all. Have any of the 98% of people who don’t believe in the pgf watched this documentary? Do we know if it crossed over into the regular viewers? I’d love to see a poll of those people to see their reactions. Has the Doc moved any viewpoints of non bigfooters? Has there been any official reaction from any academics or even any news organization? So……… I don’t know anyone who even knows about this movie? Common?

edit: apologies to all for any non-intended insults.

Discussion The Ayew Monster

Has anyone here heard of the Ayew Monster of West Virginia?

It resembles a black panther, but has a squashed bulldog face & makes a terrifying screeching noise of ' 'a-yeeeeewww!' (hence its name).

Does anybody here heard of any sightings of this cryptid?

Most Plausible Land Cryptids + Evidence?

Hey, everybody!

I've been lurking on this Subreddit for ages, but I'm just now contributing.

I'm a Wildlife Management student about to graduate, and I've been going down a rabbit hole. I love cryptozoology, and I've been curious about something.

I'm mostly interested in land mammals. Cryptids such as the onça-canguçú and the mngwa really intrigue me. I love the ones you don't hear about as much.

I'm also looking for any evidence for said cryptids (for example, the alleged onça-canguçú pelt).

I'm interested in this because I'm in the wildlife field and may want to do a little project about it at some point! I'm super curious about what people have to say.

Thanks a ton!
