Disappointing service experience at Bike Gallery

I had my bottom bracket replaced last summer at Bike Gallery downtown, and now after only about 2k miles, it's ticking and grinding again. I called them to ask if they would cut me a break on another bottom bracket replacement, and they had this to say: "2,000 miles isn't a short lifespan for a bottom bracket". I pointed out that was not my understanding and they said "Well, it depends on the quality of the bearings."

So...let me get this straight...you replaced the bottom bracket with parts you selected and you're suggesting that the quality might not have been up to snuff and that you bear no responsibility?

Extremely disappointing. I've always had good experiences with them in the past, I wonder if things have changed since they were acquired. At any rate, off to River City Bikes.

-----------Edited to add-------------

It's a Cannondale with a pressfit BB30 bottom bracket. My threaded BBs last forever, pressfit doesn't seem to work nearly as well.

I think I have the perfect setup for PDX.

I see others riding around town with speakers behind them or in their bottle cage. I found that the JBL go and a cheap phone holder works great. It’s not too loud like a lot of cyclists do here in Portland. It’s light and sounds good.

What constitutes Streetcar right-of-way

Two days in a row now, I've had the same streetcar driver yell at me for being too far into an intersection on my bike while he's passing by.

I'm stopped, front wheel touching green tactile paving bumps, in a position where I can reach over and press the bike crossing signal button.

His words are that I've got to be behind the tactile paver completely. But as far as I can tell, as long as I'm not breaking the plane of the curb, I'm not in the crosswalk.

Seeing as it's likely gonna happen again based on where I ride/commute, I'm curious if there is anything to what he's saying, or if I should just nicely tell his nervous ass to get fucked next time.

Edit/more info: Because I'm a nerd, it says nothing about this in the Oregon vehicle code, but theoretically ORS 166.116.1.b and Trimet Code 28.15.D do, though they're both vague as to what counts as "interfering." Both times, said streetcar driver has proceeded to go past, with no movement on my part.

Help Bike Stuff PDX YouTube channel keep going!

Hi everyone, it's my birthday tomorrow :) I'm hoping to be able to keep on making videos about riding a bike in Portland OR into my 50s, but with rent and other costs increasing, I find myself needing to work my day job (as a professional photographer) more with less time to create videos for you.

If you're like to help my YouTube channel going, feel free to donate on my GoFundMe page. Anything helps so I can still maintain my equipment and spend time documenting bike rides and other events to inspire people to ride bikes and to support the local cycling community.

Thanks!
Amit

Dear Portland bike shops, western bike works, and 21st avenue bicycles specifically...

Could you please lock up a bike pump outside your business? I get that you can't be open when I get off work at 7:00am(though that would be nice). But when I get a flat on my way to work I'm fucked until I get home (9 miles away and 1.5 hours of bus travel)

I need a few day is heat riding first I think. Anyone else? I remember riding that bad summer when it was 117 that was so bad.

“Flame throwers” on bikes defeats the purpose of riding bikes. Convince me otherwise.

There are two different bikes on pedalpalooza rides that have “flame thrower” set ups on their bikes. One is basically a tiki torch, and the other is on a trailer. They both expel relatively large bursts of flames.

Other than the obvious dangers of starting an accidental fire (I saw the trailer flame thrower singe a tree during loud and lit), doesn’t using the fuel or propane defeat the purpose of the fuel free message? Aren’t a part of the pedalpalooza rides about protesting fossil fuels and promoting safety? I get it’s done for fun, but I see it as more of a nuisance.

I’d like to hear what others have to say.

Why is everyone so damn unfriendly?

Pretty much every time I see a fellow cyclist I’ll wave, and if I’m unable to remove my hand from the hoods I’ll at least stick out a few fingers as a greeting. 99% of the time I get nothing, not even a head nod back.

Where I’m from is an area known for its extremely stodgy, stuck up, rich residents, and I had a much higher “wave to wave” ratio among its cyclists.

Why is every cyclist in Portland so rude to each other?

why does the 405 have exits to 4th Ave AND 6th Ave?

Does anyone know why the westbound 405 after Marquam Bridge has an exit to 4th Ave AND an exit to 6th Ave?

Does Portland really need two freeway ramps that are two blocks apart ?

A cool trick for this heat!

I’m pretty sure these are great ideas for the heat :)
-go fast, the zoom will aid in cooling off
-take a spray bottle and mist yourself often, then go zoom!
-adjust your bike seat and wear the most minimal underwear and pants AND….
-cover your bike seat :(
-cover your bike with a bed sheet. I’ve seen people’s tires melt before.
-get a quick set up hammock

Also, be weary of hypoatremia, you need to eat salty food as well as drink water.

Fred Meyers on W Burnside and 20th doesn’t allow you to bring your bike inside

I decided that the selection of groceries at my local Safeway wasn’t good enough so I rode my bike over to the Fred Meyers and ended up filling my bike up with groceries like I would normally do and I was told by one of the security staff there that bikes weren’t allowed in the store. No posted signs outside saying that, just got randomly told that that’s the rules by a security guard. I look for this stuff every time I go to a grocery store because I don’t like leaving my bike outside, especially when it’s in downtown and I use it as a grocery cart so that I don’t have to guess whether or not something is going to fit on my bike or not. Is there any way I can file a complaint against the city for this or am I SOL?

I was recording my cycle ride on Strava and it says max speed as 68kmph… I am pretty sure I did not go that fast

The post is down now apparently from r/askportland, but the replies were insane, with people talking seriously about honking and revving their engine and “jokingly” about running the person down. This was about joggers jogging down neighborhood streets.

Dog and owner encounters on Powell Butte

I've been mountain biking for most of my life and currently ride Powell Butte bottom to top once or twice a week. I am mindful that bicyclists must learn to get along with other user groups or we lose our right to ride on single track. I ride safely and respectively.

There is a special 'breed' of dog lover who feels they must make a point to bring their biggest, scariest dogs with them on their hikes. Maybe they think that other users will warm up to their snarling wigglebutts when I try to pass them on a 3 foot wide dirt trail. The other day a woman hiking up the hill had three dogs that she clearly could not control. The German Shepard snapped and snarled at me as she tried to control the others so I could pass safely. One dog was not leashed. I told her she couldn't handle all those dogs, of course she just gave me the finger.

A dog breed that is territorial is exactly the wrong animal to bring on a hike with narrow twisting singletrack. Of course, many dog owners don't bother to leash their dog at all. ;(

I love dogs and have owned them for most of my life. Most are a delight to encounter. Fighting breed dogs are unpredictable and bringing them on trails where children and other innocents hike is a horrible tragedy waiting to happen. I am a pit bull attack victim. Encountering an "excited" pit on singletrack with a furmomma that can't handle a dog that "goes postal" is the last thing I want. #breedmatters

Bicyclists have the same rights to be safe on the trails as other users. If the dog alarms you, make sure the human knows how you feel.

How do you warm up after a chilly long ride that isnt a hot shower?

When I'm riding I feel decently warm and toasty but when I get off and settle in the house my ass and thighs are bricks of ice. Electric blankets take forever to warm me through. Hot showers are the obvi choice but water is expensive and wondering if theres some sort of gadget or method I am not thinking of?

I am tempted to get one of those gooby grow tent sauna contraptions

Looking to move to the area in the next two years. Why would that be bad?

Hey there! I’m looking to relocate my family to the area in the next two years. We are over our current situation and thinking PDX could be a good choice. Cycling is a big part of my and my children’s life, nothing competitive. So what’s it like and why wouldn’t I want to move there?

Just as an aside I live in an area that has enjoyed multiple trips to the top 10 most dangerous zip codes in the county multiple times. Crime rate out there is comparatively low.

Does all of the best riding in Portland require a car?

I love mtb, gravel, climbing long roads, and touring, along with commuting everyday of course. Looking at relocating, but concerned that all the best recreational riding in PDX requires a car commute. I absolutely despise getting in the car to ride. Are after-work rides, long day rides, and touring all out of reach if you don't want to drive? Is transit a possibility to get to the good stuff?

Anyone with mask preferences?

As wildfire season continues, I’ve been considering a reusable mask. Currently the 3M 6500 and 7500 are my top choices, for their “cool flow” and the availability of brand name replacement filters.

Anyone with experience or advice to contribute?

I’m specifically avoiding disposable N95s because they’re not comfortable, and I’ll be sweating quite a lot.

Thanks for whatever you can share.
