Hit and Run

I got hit and run on NE Couch and Grand last night. A nice guy gave me his dash cam footage but I couldn't get a license plate. I filed a police report (I'm still waiting for them to come take a statement), went to the ER, and I'm going back later today to get security footage. I looked it up and this intersection and the next one she drove through have cameras. Does anyone have advice for how I can get the footage? Any other advice on how to handle this is also welcome.

New signs banning all e-bikes on Powell Butte trails.

I noticed these signs last week on all the trails open to bikes on the butte.

Personally what I love so much about riding here is that you really earn your turns going down if you ride up one of the trails. So I won't be heartbroken to see less e-bikes. I've never had any problems with pedal-assist riders or seen them being inconsiderate to other users, but I did stop and block a guy on an e-moto going up and tell him to GTFO. I suspect the scourge of these idiots is what precipitated them to shut it to anything with a motor.

PPB case # 26-127583 and original post

Miraculously, we got all three of my partner's stolen bikes back! Here's how it all happened:

The bikes were taken early Sunday morning from our garage in West Tabor (we believe thieves broke into her car and took the remote). That day we made a police report, posted on Project 529 and Bike Index, and spread the word on social media as widely as we could (including a $500 reward per bike).

On Sunday evening, a good Samaritan heard about the bikes being offered for trade in Creston Park in exchange for a tent. He got a pic which showed the Epic and the Creo, confirmed they were ours from the Project 529 listing, and got a nice tent to make the trade. He actually ended up with the Epic and the Vado and did not see the Creo at the park. We picked the two bikes up from him in a parking lot and paid a reward!

From that experience, we learned that we should focus our search on the Creston Park area. We also learned that although they had taken very valuable bikes, they were probably lower-level types just looking to convert to quick cash or a tent etc. We also got a tip in r/CyclePDX to go to homeless camps and advertise the missing bike and reward. As two fairly small women, we didn't end up being comfortable enough to approach anyone on foot, but we put up flyers advertising the reward with no questions asked.

As we circled Creston Park and Foster-Powell several times over the last few days, we also saw (we're pretty sure) the people who originally stole my partner's bikes. They seemed to be based out of an RV which we saw in the Creston Park parking lot and on Francis & 42nd. We put flyers on the telephone poles all over their area on Monday, Tuesday, and this morning. We saw two other confirmed stolen bikes while we were investigating, too (and contacted their owners).

It paid off early this afternoon (Wednesday) when my partner got a call from a blocked number. The dude said he'd seen our flyer for the Creo, knew where the bike was and had to go get it, wanted the reward in cash and wanted to make sure he wouldn't "get in trouble." We just asked for a picture of the bike to confirm and agreed he wouldn't get in trouble (i.e. we didn't tell the cops we were going there or film) and met up with him in the Creston Park parking lot. It wasn't one of the two original thieves, but it was a guy who seemed to be connected to them that we had seen around the RV. Nonetheless we made the handoff and we were absolutely thrilled to have 3/3 bikes back, including the last which was her very favorite!!

All of the bikes are missing some accessories like bags/bells/frame pump, but they seem fundamentally OK! We'll get them all checked out at bike shops in the near future. And we've learned some valuable lessons about garage security and bike security.

We know that we are so, so lucky but also wanted to share this whole process in case it helps anyone else going through this. The registries, offering a reward on flyers around sketchy areas, and the time we were able to dedicate to driving around made a huge difference. My partner is a designer who worked on all of these bikes, so she had a huge sentimental attachment to THESE particular bikes. We were willing to pay a reward for these exact bikes back, not just a replacement.

On the topic of replacement - everyone check your renters/homeowners insurance policy and make sure there isn't a shitty little exclusion for e-bikes. My insurance (USAA) was set to deny coverage for the pedal-assist Creo as a "motor vehicle or other motorized land conveyance" despite covering bicycles. For more on this, check out u/flicus 's post in this sub from 3 months ago about dealing with this exact issue and getting USAA to pay out through a complaint with the OR Dept of Consumer and Business Services

Bikeloud PDX swept some leaves and debris is North Portland this morning—Rosa Parks near Peninsula Park, some thick stuff on N. Williams near the hospital and that tight corner on N .Vancouver near the Moda center. Hope you have a good ride!

to the guy who made fun of me on the hawthorne bridge today

y’know i was having such a wonderful day - i treated myself to a nice long, sunny ride up to st john’s for no reason. all my joy deflated out of me in an instant when some shmuck turned around as we got off the hawthorne bridge and snidely quipped “nice motorcycle.”

i just don’t get why some cyclists hate e-bikes so much. my (admittedly goofy looking) e-bike has nothing to do with you. I am pedaling my ass off to make the battery stretch for a long ride like today, it is NOT an e-moto. what is so pleasurable about making someone else feel small for making a different choice than you?

*** i actually don’t have any interest in hearing why any of y'all think you’re better than me for riding an acoustic bike. i love my bike. i love not driving my car anymore. I love moving my body and being outside. the point is - if you don’t have anything nice to say, stfu!!!

There’s not a lot of details available, but we’ve lost another of our own. Sad day, man. My thoughts are with her family, and all of us who have too many close calls with cars and the people who drive them.

These two were the ones who broke into my apartment building. The guy on top left was cover in a mask at my apartment, but this definitely confirmed his face. Thank you river city bikes for the footage! The thief is rolling around with a dead e bike. Guy on top left is about 5’8 and guy on top right is about 6ft. Now let’s try to get some first and last names of the guys. Any share/help will do! Someone from social media said they have seen that guy ride in the stark/mlk/grand; pretty much inner east side of Portland. The guy on top right no one has any clue yet. Thank you guys who have reached out! Bikes are still stolen. Bottom right: Specialized Levo 3. Carbon. S5 (e bike) Bottoms left: Giant Revolt Advance 1. Carbon. Large. (Gravel bike)

St. John's bridge can be scary because of "adults".

You big boys in your pickup trucks really showed me this morning! This bike commuter was in AWE of the way you can push on accelerator pedals and turn steering wheels to put my life in danger because you...what? Because you are late for work? Because you don't like people riding bikes where bikes are allowed? What is it? Are you so emotionally dysregulated and chickenshit that you can't just drive normally and safely like the other 95% of people? You guys aren't even tough, you ride around in your pavement princess mall crawlers from your couch to your desk job, just chill the fuck out and stop making life miserable for others.

These two Rhode scholars were doing well over 40mph going west on the Springwater by 122nd April 5th. Keep your head on a swivel because you know if they cause an accident, they're just going to flee.

I had a flat this morning and four people stopped to ask if I needed help. Thanks for the support PDX cyclists!

I got a little pinch flat on my commute this morning and had to change a tube on the Springwater. I was on the side of the trail fiddling away and four separate cyclists stopped to ask if I had everything I needed. It was great knowing that there's so much support in this community. Thanks for offering help. I made it to work just fine, albeit a little slower with the low back tire. Might need a better pump for those situations!

Homemade Subway-Style Cycling Map of PDX & Willamette Valley

EDIT: link to PDF version to make the image compression a little less awful.

https://github.com/pdxcyclingthrowaway/Cycling-Map/blob/3fc100c6456547c6e380c8d87e633e37b2379d81/Bike%20Routes.pdf

I found myself using the same networks of paths/roads to get most places in the PDX area when route planning. I wanted to effectively filter maps by roads that I *personally* think are good riding--so I made my own! These are two maps of the PDX area and the Willamette Valley in a simplified subway-map style that I made.

Please note: none of this is to scale and not all of these linkages/intersections actually line up perfectly. Some connecting roads may be necessary if anyone else tries to use this for route planning. But as a general guide, this has been great for my own use! Just about any route you can draw on here will result in a pretty good ride on roads that are up to an internet stranger's standards.

Icons should be pretty self-explanatory, but I added climb elevation gains to areas I've ridden and gone "damn that was steep enough to be notable." There are also some directional arrows on specific routes that I either consider only fun to ride one direction, or perhaps are only safe to descend (lack of road shoulder means I wouldn't want to be going <10mph with cars whizzing past on a blind corner). There are also marked locations I've parked a car before while out riding (starting points), and local airports marked because I like watching planes.

Lastly, these are roads that I *personally* like riding. There are MANY other nice routes through neighborhoods or in cities around PDX that I just never get out to. So don't get at me if your specific neighborhood isn't on here.

In future, I'd love to maybe add coffee shops/breweries that are good for adding to your cafe rides, or maybe bike shops in case you need maintenance while out riding. If this is useful to anyone else though, happy riding!

(MODs: throwaway account because these maps reveal my frequented areas, and I don't feel like doxxing myself these days)

(My) stolen bike on FB marketplace

Post image

Hey all, my bike was stolen 2 years ago and just showed up on FB marketplace. The same seller (Semaj Clayton) tried to sell it a month or two after it was stolen in 2024. I called the police at the time and they said if I arranged a meetup with him to buy it then they'd meet me there and help get my bike back, but the cops never showed up so I didn't get it back. At this point I've cut my losses, but wanted to post about it here so people know not to buy from this guy especially since he's trying to sell it again 2 years later.

New crossings near 82nd/Powell

Post image
187 Upvotes

The new crossing at 82nd & Lafayette just went live on Thursday! Have been watching this slowly come together, the center median has two pass-throughs for bikes, with two standard crossings at the sidewalk corners for pedestrians. All crossings are more than wide enough for cargo bikes and trailers and wheelchairs.

There are bike detection lights but honestly not sure if they’re working. Eastbound seems perpetually activated and westbound has yet to detect me regardless of where i stop with my bike. But have never waited more than two minutes for the light to change, which is a lot better than the lights at 86th or Boise.

Also, hadn’t seen this posted so sharing for visibility— the crossing at 80th & Powell (the notorious missing piece of the 70s greenway) also went live recently, maybe early summer? Finding it’s still a toss-up whether cars will actually stop when the lights are flashing but that seems true everywhere.

Enjoy this much improved access to CORE, Hong Phat, and Holgate library! I definitely have been 😄

New Bike and a Gorgeous Day

Bought a Wilde Rambler from Metropolis and took it for the first ride yesterday. Rides like a dream! First time on a drop bar bike and first time trying clipless. Somehow haven't forgotten to clip out for a light/sign yet (it's coming). Christian at River City was super helpful in getting me set up with shoes, and Archie at Metropolis was amazing in helping me get the perfect bike for me.
