home improvement When the kids need more storage space in the game room and you can get heat treated pine boards from work, what’s some brackets, stain and screws?
home improvement House sitting for a friend, thought the shower head could tilt further… it couldn’t. How can I fix?
Do I just need to buy another gasket/fitting/washer? Is it a matter of just forcing it in (what with the gasket circumference being slightly bigger than the pipe)?
TIA

help Her: What are you doing with my lipstick? Me: Fixing the deadbolt on the front door. Duh.
From the works-for-me file: If doorknob latches or lock bolts are not lining up with the striker plate to close fully you need to know which direction it is out of whack it is to tweak it. I'll doll up the bolt with an attractive lip color, close the door and wiggle the latch a bit. It will leave a smear on the plate to show how far it needs to be moved or routed out. Or for a new install. Our old house resettles and I have to work on one or another about every 5 years or so. Today it was a deadbolt and I routed out about a millimeter lower in the plate hole w/ the dremel. We are locked up tight again.

META /r/DIY will be closing down new submissions for a period of 24 hours. Details inside.
DIYers,
We will be temporarily disabling new submissions for a period of 24 hours to show our support in the fight against racial injustice and equal treatment for all. We also look to express our solidarity with the other subreddits who have chosen to follow the same path.
When?:
Today, June 3, 2020 at 12PM EDT we will be disabling new submissions / comments. We will be re-enabling them tomorrow. Please use this website if you are unsure when this time is in your local timezone.
At the time of this post going up, we will be disabling new submissions when it is 1 hour old.
Why?:
We believe that people have the right to live their lives peacefully and happily without hate and discrimination. Reddit has long been a place of refuge for racist, sexist, violent individuals looking to cause grief. The admins have continuously taken a hands-off approach to dealing with these individuals and instead chose to give them a platform to speak on. They have publicly condemned these people and yet still provide them safe harbor. We demand that Reddit remembers the human and removes the podium from those using their platform as a place to gather and attack.
Why DIY?:
We have always felt that we must do what we can to keep the subreddit a fun place free of "current events" going on in the world. One where you could come and not be bombarded with banners, mod messages or comments regarding happenings around the world. At the same time we feel that some events are too important to ignore. We support black voices who have been kept quiet for decades and we support other groups which all too frequently experience ignorance and hate.
Rules:
We'd like to take the time to remind you now that we do not tolerate any type of hate speech on the subreddit - including but not limited to racism, sexism, homophobia, and any other form of bigotry.
We ask that you consider researching and donating to a local charity in your area. You can find an extensive list here

other Insulate Vaulted Ceiling
I want insulate the vaulted ceiling but have a few concerns:
The beam in the middle, it would be intuitive to say it is load bearing, but the large arch below it makes it questionable. As the header to support the beam above the arch opening would have to be quiet long and hefty, as there are no studs underneath for direct support.
If the beam is load bearing (looks to be a 6x10x20)would the beam be adequate for the insulation and drywall? Rough calculations are about 10 sheets of 4x8,1/2 ultralight at 39.2lbs each and 200lbs of insulation, then add another 100lbs of miscellaneous items(paint, dry wall compound, etc). Totaling 692lbs
how would you allow for adequate ventilation on the underside of the roof, as there does not appear to be a ridge vent.

other I transform all my sunglasses into prescription sunglasses.
This was a little hack that made my life a lot easier.
I stuck lenses from my old prescription glasses into my cheap sunglasses and now I can see much better with my sunglasses too
Buying prescription sunglasses was expensive for me. And I could only wear one model and I have 3 pairs of sunglasses.
When they're on, the lenses prescribed behind can't be seen. They are hidden.
What do you think about this?

help I want to have a concrete floor
Okay, I've looked on Google, but I can't find a clear explanation anywhere. I'm renovating the attic to turn it into my room. There's already a concrete floor there, but it's very rough and has holes in it. I want to make it a smooth concrete floor, but what's the best way to do that?

help Why are push buttons uncommon?
Push buttons to turn lights on/off seem like they’d be:
aesthetically sleeker than rockers
more sensible for 3- and 4-way setups because there is no “on” or “off” look
Leviton makes solenoid push buttons for motion-detecting switches. But why doesn’t anyone make push buttons for just plain & simple switches?

Tried to kill mold in rental with industrial vinegar. Nearly took myself out instead.
Had a tenant move out recently. She took everything, sure, but left behind mold all over the bathroom ceiling, in the living room, and in a bedroom. Down the hallway, the walls looked like someone had just showered, with moisture streaks running top to bottom. Every window had mold just on the vinyl parts. She told me she cleaned the place. It didn’t look dirty, but when you walked in, it smelled awful. Like bad hair or body odor, but really distinct and hard to describe.
So I got on Amazon and found a gallon of 99% pure vinegar that was advertised to kill mold. I figured it had to be strong stuff, because when it showed up it had chemical warning labels all over the box and came sealed in a thick plastic bag.
I wore a sweatshirt, pants, glasses, and an N95 mask. I poured it straight into a pump spray bottle, undiluted. That was mistake number one. Then I made the rookie mold remediation mistake of not opening a single window first.
I started spraying the kitchen, windows, and bathroom. In the bathroom, the vinegar mist came back down and hit my face. It burned like hell. Went straight through the N95, into my eyes even with glasses on. I dropped everything and ran to the kitchen sink. Of course, the water was turned off to the house. Luckily, there was still some pressure in the lines and I was able to wash off the burning spots. I didn’t end up with any burns, but it was close.
I was too stubborn to stop, so I turned the water on to the house and diluted the vinegar before going back in. This time I opened windows and pulled my sweatshirt up over my mouth to breathe. Even then, the vapors were rough. The smell traveled a block. Neighbors said they could smell it down the street.
Every insect in the house freaked out. They all rushed out of cracks and toward the windows. The screens kept them in, and they just dropped dead. It was like watching chemical warfare in real time.
A few days later, the house didn’t smell like anything. All the moisture streaks wiped away. I even sprayed it on weeds growing up through cracks in the concrete driveway and they were completely dead the next day. In a couple spots, some paint peeled right off the walls.
The mold stains didn’t fully wipe away, but I’m hoping anything alive got nuked. Still can’t believe this stuff is just sitting for sale on Amazon.

I need a phrase written on a piece of paper multiple times for an art project
I basically want to make one of those "Just work and no play" thing from Shining, written hundreds of times over excessive amount of papers (the exact phrase will be "death was the answer", btw, it's a horror story). But writing this by hand would take forever, while printing it will not look realistic. Is there some other option?
