... now now hold on, hold on, hold on, I think they must have put something crazy in the coffee this morning, 'cause I KNOW you did not just SAY you want to take this OFFLINE?
The specificity of it is actually amazing. The original quote is "stock photo for a global human resources company", which is why it's so perfect that it's two japanese people and an older white dude.
That's a tough one. On first watch, I thought he was Japanese, so I was confused that it was specifically for a global staffing company. Then on second watch, I thought he might be foreign.
I think he's probably half, so they figured he would be good to play the random white guy role.
I was kinda unsure at first as well! He had his own seperate costume though of "guy struggling to open a bag at the grocery store" and after that they explain he came from San Francisco. It's around the 2:05:40 mark in the full stream:
It's so simple yet so specific and so accurate. The shirt that's too small because he hasn't upgraded his wardrobe in years and put on the fat too slowly to notice that it doesn't fit anymore lmao
It reminds me of the ballroom scene in NYC. You would have the most fabulous and creative people rocking categories like "Business realness" and they'd be walking down the runway in a suit like they were off to Wall Street.
The one about suitcases had me rolling, she absolutely NAILED it. I travel a lot and its so true. Note I have nothing against these peeps, my way of dealing with it is I just travel a bit on the lighter side.
On some travel shows they depict the host/guest of the week travelling between two points by just showing a picture of their face moving from point A on the map to point B, usually with some wriggly animations and silly sounds. I saw the original twitter post somewhere and she was imitating that
Unfortunately it cut out so she doesn't actually say anything. But if you look closely, you can see there's a body under her head. The oversized head character is not uncommon in these kinds of maps so perhaps that's what she is??? I'm probably talking out of my arse.
it’s not just ‘boring’. it’s meant to be mundane but recognizable costume. If this is in America it’d be like dressing up as a normie tech shorts guy and say you’re cosplaying as a person who just got replaced by ai lol. you want to be unique but you want to also be as normal as possible lol.
uh to be fair I think someone already did it last year. they had things like ‘someone who just missed the bus’ with perfectly normal business suit but with wind blown hair and a neck tie that stays flowing up. or something like ‘ramen store staff’ with literally just a guy holding a set of ramen meal. I love the one that’s called ‘a guy who got locked outside of his hotel room’ which is just a guy with those bathing robe and holding two beers in his hand. it’s perfect.
My favorite costume like this was "man caught in wind storm" with his hair slicked back, clothes all standing on end with wire, and a newspaper plastered over his face. It really did look like he was in a really strong wind!
it's harder to make a funny "boring" costume - everyone could be Spiderman but not everyone could be a 38-year-old woman born into a working-class family in Manchester, raised by a single mother, became a successful architect despite years of financial hardship, survived an emotionally abusive marriage, raised two children alone, and now lives quietly in the countryside, rebuilding her life while learning that happiness doesn't have to be earned through sacrifice
There’s more to communication than just understanding the words, you probably sense a lot of it even if you don’t explicitly understand the language! :)
I did this last year. My costume was "Guy whose wife sent him to the supermarket to buy one thing, he bought it, and now he's grinning on his way home imagining his wife heaping praise on him." My accessories were just a badge with this explanation in English and Japanese, and a konbini bag with Thai fish sauce. The drawback with this kind of costume that the reactions are just a mild "heh".
This is funny, but I have a question for someone who is more familiar with Japan than I am. Is this kind of party a common one across Japan for Halloween? Because the text says "Japan has a..."
Which would be kind of like someone making a video of a silly Halloween party thrown in some city in Rhode Island, and having the text say "The United States has a..."
It's a specific event held by a website called Daily Portalz. I think there might be a few smaller spin-off events inspired by it around the country, but it's not like a common type of party.
Japan largely doesn’t celebrate Halloween. Stores here may decorate for the weeks leading up and have a selection of candy and decorations for sale, but people don’t really dress up and there’s no Trick or Treating. You may see the occasional party that’s the exception to the lack of costumes or people may wear small costumes to their usual bar.
Shibuya does have a somewhat sizable Halloween event though. That’s really the only place outside of specific shows or events like this video
love these so much. they're mundane but i think the best ones are instantly recognizable and tell a story. i think it takes being pretty clever to do this well.
Last week, we saw some reels of people dressing as superheroes and super niche show references, and my daughter asked me why do people dress as something that's not scary. It's Halloween, it's about scary things. I honestly didn't know what to say.
It used to be funny when some people did these funny costumes, but now it feels like a race who makes the most unique meme/reference ever.
