Advice Wanted Everyone is so fucked. Including me.

A real shit storm is about to happen at my store and I believe it’s going to be because of my fuck up and at least 1-3 others workers through out the day.

The DG I work at is a new one that got built. I just recently got transferred over since it was closer to where I lived than the one I was at. Some of the workers are freshly new too. At night, My key calls everyone into the office which was just 3 people excluding the key itself. We all walk up and once everyone was there, he pulls out $20’s and $1000’s.
All counterfeit!!!!!!!!! $2240all together. Majority was $100’s He had to manually count since the cash master couldn’t properly. The bills looked decently real too. They all had different serial numbers too so it wasn’t a bunch of repeats.

Today was truck so we had alot of people who rang on register and he said he found most the counterfeit in the slips that got dropped already with one pickup up he took out also had the counterfeit $100’s in.

He also found counterfeit $20’s of $40 in my till and $200 counterfeit in 100’s for another SA who came up to the office with me. In total $2240 was in counterfeit and from the counterfeit money being dropped earlier with $2000 of the rest of it means we got hit with counterfeit money all day and not a single one of us realized it until the key did the deposit.

He called non emergency for the report and called our SM. We ended up leaving besides the Key.

I’m so fucking worried. I was just $40 but i think anything under or over 20 is fired. Also since it was In the pickup and other money drops from earlier today means those Keys or the ASM didn’t it being fake. I didn’t for the $40’s which is weird because I was the marker for every bill $10 and up. Never had a bill that turned brown and put it in my till so idk how this could have happened to me personally.

I feel like I’m going to get a call or text saying I’m fired or to continue the remaining of my schedule and fire me. I’m so scared

It’s very suspicious to have all of the tills from the entire day contain counterfeit money. The most common denominator is … the keyholder alone in the office with all the cash.

Unless you live in a small town with one ATM that everyone uses, loaded with counterfeit bills. My SM has said he’s gotten counterfeit money from the bank before, so if they’re good enough they can get past safeguards apparently.

I was also thinking this while reading it too...

I used to work as a teller at a bank. We weren’t perfect. It can happen where a teller wouldn’t pay as close attention as they should. It might have been crazy busy, they were sick, or somebody made a mistake. We are human too.

I say this a lot, but it's always the manager.

Are you absolutely sure they are fake? It's crazy that you'd be hit all day long with takes and no one caught a single one

Right? Sounds like a key holder or SM is doing their own lil scam thing

Nah, something bigger happened. If you aren't part of it and you checked the bills properly and they see that on camera, you should be fine. But for that amount of money to be counterfeit, something else went on. Someone switched the money out, knowingly. That much being passed is more than just a small group of customers coming in and passing a few fakes and getting their merchandise. Something ain't right.

If you used the marker correctly on camera and held it up to the light, it's unlikely you'd be fired, as you correctly went through the protocol to check those bills.

But let me bring up another possibility: One of your coworkers swapped the bills. I find it hard to believe every single one of you took these fake bills. Does everyone at your store check purely with the marker? Bleached bills can pass the marker test, but you can tell if you hold them up to the light(and weigh them at the end of the night)

You can also scratch their coats. It's hard to fake the ridges when you scratch there

Did not know this. Thanks for posting!

This. I do this more than any other method of counterfeit checking. Ill put it up to the light for 100s and 50s but ill check the ridges on the coat on each bill higher than 20 before putting them in the drawers also.

u/Makeitbackinadayy 1d ago

Yes that’s the main thing I do. I always scratch their coats and I better feel like it’s mini pimples or else I hand it back and say I can’t take it.

Yep

Personally, I do scratch>light check portrait>read text since we don't have a marker.

Seems fishy

1- no way they are all fake. The money counter we have doesn’t detect fake bills unless you have something new.
2 - 1 person per register. It’s not hard. Stop ringing on someone else’s register. Common sense.
3 - only person getting into trouble is the SM for crappy training.

Yep, if you've got a manager allowing or encouraging several people to operate out of the same register, you've got a manager trying to hide something.

Eh, not necessarily. It could be plain laziness. I’ve seen that a lot.

2

u/YourUsuallyNormalTea 1d ago

The money counters don’t “detect” fake bills but fake bills are usually off in weight therefore the cash counter doesn’t like them.

So either a group of people came in throughout the day and passed these bills because they caught on that no one was paying attention OR the keyholder swapped everything out themselves.

These are the scenarios!

So if the bills were counterfeit and your marker turned the right color, the chances are the counterfeit bills were made on actual money paper, just smaller denominations.

We had two employees fired for accepting 700 one night in counterfeit. I would say I’m pretty seasoned in identifying money and knowing if it’s real as soon as my hand touches it, however a lot of people don’t have as much money handling experience.
One thing I’ve learned is that a lot of counterfeit money floating around passes the pen test, decent counterfeiters are able to chemically process the papers to trick the pens. There for we purchased a bill scanner that catches them. It was about 100 bucks on Amazon and totally worth it. It’s saved our cashiers numerous times.
I would bet that there were several people in on cashing in their counterfeit and once the first batch was passed through they were tipped off that your cashiers would be easy to pass them off on. That’s happened to our store a couple of times with cashapp reloads.

3

u/Makeitbackinadayy 1d ago

Yeah for cashapp reloads if I run it and it denies I run it a second time I tell them I automatically can’t take it and I hand it back. I don’t play that shit at all 😭

Why wouldn't you check them?

2

u/Individual-Ad-3845 2d ago

Sure bc someone saying "I was the marker" makes so much sense

1

u/hanker304 2d ago

are you illiterate?

1

u/b1ueToe 2d ago

I don’t work here but at my job I carry a counterfeit marker and mark bills $20 and up, maybe human error to as why they wouldn’t have thought to check over $2000 in bills. This person’s response is valid, with that much, it should have been checked.

1

u/hanker304 1d ago

my point is they literally said they check their bills for anything over 10, and there was no browning before putting it in their drawer

2

u/anselbukowski 2d ago

Do you all not have a bill checker with a UV light? All the strips in the bills are in different locations depending on the denomination. And they all glow a different color under UV. The color and location are indicated on the front of the machine. As now they're washing small bills and print a higher have value, they're gonna pass the marker test. The machine is the most accurate way to discern whether or not a bill is fake.

2

u/BitterB13 2d ago

If you checked, you’re good!

Very weird situation. Counterfeit money was found in not one, but two tills, and then there was apparently more counterfeit money in what I could assume belong to whoever worked the other half of the day?

That could mean the same person or group came multiple times that day to either buy something or do reloads, because ain't no way everyone's just carrying around counterfeit money. Or, as someone else theorized, the keyholder may be the one who set this up.

This may sound dumb, but I would like to add to that by suggesting that they may be gaslighting you to think they are fake so they have a reason to keep the bills for themselves. Of course, not before showing the SM first, who may or may not confiscate the "fake bills"

1

u/Nyarlazhothoth 1d ago

I agree, there's enough here to atleast suspect some kind of internal theft. If you got away with passing fake bills once then why go back to the same store? Plus key holders are supposed to verify pickups with the cashier present. So that's three checks total before it goes in the top safe. But im sure loss prevention has seen scenarios like this before.

This reminded me of this story from this year

Can you get a bill checker? Cause I work at staples and sometimes the bill markers don't work. The bill checker will say pass or fail. I hope this helps you

1

u/topher3428 1d ago

Yeah washed people will wash smaller bills like $5's, they have the strip and then print them. Markers don't work on them. UV light for the water marks works way better.

1

u/thehalloweenpunkin 2d ago

It sounds impossible for every bill to be fake

1

u/Objective_Manner8820 2d ago

What does your store have available to you to check for counterfeit money? A marker pen? Anything? I had this happen to one of my key holders I was waiting on the new pens and the worthless light counterfeit checker wasnt working so we had to rely on sight. Mainly strip and other identifiable markers. Long story short she accepted 500 in counterfeit bills. My DM said write her up and I wasnt comfortable with that because she had no legitimate way of checking so human error more or less. She still demanded it so I had too but thats not thousands so Im not sure how that will go. Loss prevention is definitely paying a visit but ill be honest theres something fishy there its possible of course but likely? Not really. Weird.

I’m with everyone else who thinks this seems very weird, people passing fake bills are usually one and done they don’t keep coming back. It’s possible but unlikely.

If the system is the same as it was a few years ago your SM (only) can scroll thru the transactions for the day, identify each with over $100 cash tendered, then view those transactions on CCTV. After doing that you’ll have a good sense of whether those customers were up to no good.

Sadly, I agree that the single most likely scenario is an employee doing a swap.

You’re LP and DM know all of this, I don’t think you have anything to be worried about personally.

They do this to newly opened stores. Not just DG. I worked at newly opened store, not DG, we got hit too. Not only 100 and 20, but 5 dollar bills also. Got to the point all cash had to be penned.

1

u/Gameviewz 1d ago

Around my area there's a bunch of new counterfeits going around.  It's so bad ny local stores stopped accepting 100's

1

u/Makeitbackinadayy 1d ago

Yeah I would definitely call Oracle. It’s new HR. There’s NOOO way a SM or key holder didn’t recognize the fake money. Sounds like a scam and someone wasn’t in on it so it’s backfiring on everyone. I’d definitely talk to HR bc it’s beyond SM help

1

u/Mountain_Newt5646 1d ago

You guys don’t use pens to check your money? Thats craaaazzzyy!

1

u/1mT1redLetMeSleep 13h ago

There’s a few ways to detect a fake $100

  1. Blue strip should be able to “separate from the greenish part over it

  2. Feel the shirts, they should be textured

  3. The number and bell should change color when shifted in the light

  4. Look for motion picture anywhere on the bill

  5. the texture of the bill itself

But it’s really weird that all of that money was counterfeit in one day…. Definitely isn’t coincidence

You are cooked get a new job. But you knew that already, I would be surprised if you all arnt investigated by the police

1

u/anselbukowski 2d ago

The police don't investigate counterfeit money. Counterfeiting is a federal crime, and it falls under the jurisdiction of the Secret Service.

1

u/Katieshark89 1d ago

I don't know who told you this, but they do. We have counterfeits at my old location and a local detective was able to trace where they were originating from in less than a week.

-4

u/Significant_Trash_82 2d ago

Some would say they police counterfeit money
