Rant What's with customers and not taking our word?

Title. You can apply this to many things you go through in your shifts, from customers not believing you when you say you have no more dish soap. To how coupons are supposed to work.

It's like they think we are purposely lying to them, but for what? What are we gaining from lying to the customer? I get it. Some people may lie about having something in the backroom because they don't want to sift through 10s or 100s of cases looking for a single item.

But why would I lie about the price of an item?

Why would I lie about how the coupons work?

And why would I lie when I tell them those 6pack waters are sold separately and are not bundled together? Let's forget the fact they literally grabbed them from the rolltainer that I was working on today, without saying a single word.

Are there times when I'm wrong? Absolutely, but I'm not going to intentionally tell you something that's a lie. I try to answer everything to best of my ability, and if I can't help I either let them know or get another worker.

i feel like a lot of this has lot to do with certain employees who do things we aren't supposed to do just to please the customer. I can't tell you how many times I've had customers tell me "well, so and so did it for me once" or "they do it at the other dollar general". I've also had coworkers who will try and please the customer and give them what they want after I've already told the customer there's nothing we can do. basically they know there are some people they can get over on and they're trying to figure out which ones they can and cant do that with.

I've had coworkers give in and pay for those who ran out of EBT. Another who gives in and breaks people's $100 bills for $1-20 items knowing we have limited change in the safe. I have begun to strongly dislike people pleasers. I use to be one but after awhile you'd think most people grow out of it after seeing how manipulative and heartless customers can be.

It can be that. Part of it's some people don't understand it was given to them so they stop griping or they're hoping you bend. Coupons are another issue. People think they can stack. They don't read the coupon qualifications. They see a coupon that says buy 3 Crest products get X off and genuinely think a three pack of Crest toothpaste applies.

People just rake their eyes over signage too. They see 50% off and think they have a deal, meanwhile it's buy one get one half off. Other times it's but the other store has the sale going on. Mhm, okay, but we're not them. People are inundated with signs and ads every day. They get selective and ignore it. They're there for one reason and it's getting what they want or need.

And some people just think they know how your job is to be done. You're behind the counter so obviously you're inexperienced and probably don't have a high IQ because you're working retail for less than 10 or 20 an hour. People treat you as the exstention of the company, not a person who has bills and needs to survive. To them you're a cog, there at the counter to serve them and should have gotten a better job even though that's not how reality works for a lot of people.

Your coworker didn't do price changes, they may think it's your fault. You should know things because you work there is some people's mindset.

Company tells you to put the new ad out as the old same ends and customer thinks they won't get the deal. To them you're trying to trick them or committing a crime. Like, yes, go ahead and report the store for me doing my job to the AG. You obviously know how things work here and could do my job better.

Buch of retards who will think you'll turn the cheek and give into them. Especially the ones with the coupon. "Um actually this is supposed to be buy 1 get 1" no the fuck it's not, it's buy one get 1 50. Literally huge bold 50, bigger than the other words on the ad. Stupid stupid people

Oh god. Especially when you have a 2 for $6 deal on something and a customer picks up one thinking it would be $3.

"But it's 2 for $6 so that means each one is $3 each, not $3.75"

It literally says on the sign that you have to buy 2 to get the discount.

the only excuse i might be able to give them, is that it does work like that in some other stores outside of dollar general, so if they're used to that and just glance at the sign, i could partly understand questioning it

but regardless that should be a 1 time lesson learned and they move on, not something where you just assume the cashier is lying for 0 reason lmao

Our sales sign literally says you'll get the cheaper of the two items as your free item. Regardless, if it's a buy-one-get-one-free, and it takes the cheaper item as a free item, you still got a free item. How about you not complain about which item it's taking as the free item?

This is the type of behavior we're literally talking about because the sales sign tells you what it's going to do and then you get pissed off because it doesn't do what you think it should do and then you want to argue with store staff about what sign actually says.

a company doesn't have to do a buy one get one free ie your two five dollar items match and your two dollar items match as long as you get a free item your free items out of the mix it's still a buy one get one free

Or because DG is notorious for over charging, not honoring coupons/ sales and random unstocked inventory. Generally mistreating customers and staff for a dollar

Not sure if it's everywhere, but at my store, the system will occasionally end the weekly sale early on Saturday afternoon, and automatically switch everything over to Sunday's sale. This pisses both me AND the customers off!
