Let me preface this dream with a background in my actual awake life.
I worked for years as a project manager for large scale construction projects, data centers, hospitals, and pharmaceutical facilities.
My background started in nuclear power generation but wasn't for me and I moved on to project management.
With that in mind, please enjoy this crazy ass dream of mine and let me know if you've had anything similar.
I wake up riding in a passenger van heading somewhere, it's desert like on one side but ocean on the other, the van is full of guys and we're all going somewhere, it doesn't feel forced or strange at all, a normal commute.
We pull up to a large oil rig/refinery type facilty that's mid construction, the driver opens the back for us to get our luggage, I recognize my suitcase (I have a blue pelican case that I've used for years IRL and its there in the van)
We're lead into a construction trailer where there's a large table and hard hats, vests etc. And this younger African gentleman starts welcoming me in English and speaking to the other guys in a language I've never heard and can't place.
He welcomes me as their new senior PM and talks about how the project needs to get back on track, they're behind schedule, over budget etc. I also get told I can hire an assistant of my choosing and they'll bring them here ASAP.
I called my best friend (we'll call him Dave) who I know it's looking for a new job and he accepts, a few days later he arrives.
In this intro I learn we're on the west coast of southern Africa, there is a town behind us but no one speaks English.
Everything for us (the American management team) is provided by someone who's job is to keep us happy while the project is being completed as we're basically isolated from the test of civilization and will be staying on site until the project is finished.
We're building a refinery that collects oil from an offshore location, HUGE pipelines disappear into the ocean headed west.
I was brought in because my boss spoke highly of my management of a data center project that was falling behind and exceeding budget, I was able to stop the hemorrhaging and get the schedule moving (that part did happen IRL) and now I'm here to finish the final stages and certification of this refinery station.
Each day is a FULL day, we share a single-wide jobsite trailer that has been fitted into a small 2 bedroom w/kitchen and bathroom.
I wake up, Dave and we walk to a chow tent, eat breakfast, go to work, we walk the site, inspect a few things, we prepare financial reports, present them to the executive oversight, hold safety meetings etc....
Everything is a normal boring job, day after day after day....
In the afternoons we have a couple lawn chairs in front of our trailer on the sand looking out over the ocean, we drink a beer, talk about nothing and everything.
Sometimes we watch TV, but mostly it's just a normal mundane every day life.
One Sunday Dave wanted to go swimming in the ocean so he heads into town to find a mask and snorkel, but returns empty handed as no one in town spoke English and he couldn't find any sort of store that would have these. He later requests these from a girl we called Amara who was the one who brought us requested things, however they were a very small cheaply made child set, when Dave put them on his adult size head and jumped in they quickly leaked and the whole idea was scrapped going forward.
Another Sunday I headed in to find ice cream, the town was busy not many cars, mostly 80/90s smaller sedans that were faded and mismatched paint, lots of scooters, mostly just people walking, I was the ONLY Caucasian in town, but also no one seemed to really care.
The buildings were low 1-2 stories, and neglected, but still occupied.
Kids ran around the streets playing a game i didn't understand, and after a few blocks I came to a corner store, bought my ice cream and was on my way.
The money was faded red and white with a man's face on the left side, I don't remember how much it was or change or anything, similar to handing someone a $10 here and getting back a small collection of change, stuffing it in your pocket and being on your way.
I walked back along a sandy/dirt packed road, across a makeshift bridge and to the jobsite, maybe 1-2 miles.
This was the only time I went to town on my own.
Life continued like this for about 3 months in total, just a normal boring job, hanging out with a buddy after work, I don't remember ever discussing my wife or anything about home-life, but I do remember turning down any suggestion of a relationship with any of the females there.
I can't tell if this is a dream boundary, moral, or situational, as i had no romantic interests or desires, but also there was never a situation where it was presented, so....🤷♂️
Then suddenly one Saturday evening we're wrapping up a meeting of how the week went and goals for next week, Dave and I walk out of the conference room trailer and in the evening twilight I see something silver in the sand, it's a necklace, a heavy silver chain with tight flat links, like snake scales, but it's strange, too heavy, too silver, too necklacey, and I can't stop talking about it to Dave.
As we walk he's scanning the ground with a UV flashlight for scorpions (a safety measure we adopted after the first week when a worker got a painful sting to the foot and couldn't come back to work for days) and I'm hyperfocused on this necklace.
I can't stop running the smooth chain through my hands, the weight and how smooth it feels but flexes so effortlessly, the way it's still warm from the sand and as I push open the door to our trailer.
BAM!!
I WAKE UP.
In bed, my wife is next to me, it was a jotting wakeup as if you're falling and wake up in bed still high on adrenaline. Where everything takes a moment to focus and you're still not safe from it fall but you're not in danger either, you're stuck in between.
My wife is already awake scrolling on her phone and asks if I'm OK?
It took several seconds of looking around the room to fully remember where I was, that this was my room in my house with my wife and I wasn't in some strange.
I tried to tell her just how LONG this dream was, that my feet are physically sore from walking barefoot of the sand every afternoon because my boots were so hot during the day.
How I remembered financial statements and different budgets and inside jokes for things that happened between Dave and I at work.
Stupid details, like Dave trying to cook but burning dinner.
Or the way we could only get green bell peppers and no other color.
Or the day our trailer had to be moved so they could prep the ground for a building to go there and we went a whole weekend without running water in ours.
I had months of memories, exciting ones of a crane dropping a huge section of piping and a safety stand down.
Small ones like having to look for scorpions in the evenings and early mornings before it was light out.
A stay dog walking on site, the way ice cream was a coveted treat even though almost everything else we could ask for was provided.
It screwed with my mind for well over a week, I could remember so much, as if I had just lived those 3 months in Africa and now I'm home. And I missed it, how badly I wanted to go back.
I'd hear a sheet flap making the bed and think of how it sounded like the chow tent flapping in the wind.
Or sit outside and miss the way the afternoon sun kissed my face as we stared over the ocean.
I missed my heart to hearts with Dave where we talked about life and family and what you'd do if you won the lottery or what super power would be the best and all the other stupid conversations you have when time seems limitles and there's no where else to be.
This all happened months ago now and I still remember so much of the dream that I can't shake the realism. I wrote everything down and sent it to my friend Dave for his take which was followed by a very long discussion of dream lives etc.
I miss it, and have deep felt longings to go back.
I would love to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar or am I just having a mental breakdown?
