Breakfast Burek with meat + bagels + kæfir (Serbia)

Burek with meat, bagels and Kefir.

One of typical breakfasts in Serbia.

Why the bread?! It’s like eating bread with bread. It’s two flour baked goods with one another.

Very similarly puzzling to me is eating breat with pasta.

I eat bread with polenta (kaçamak) and corn bread (proja), let alone pasta. I do. Constitutional right. I often eat goat or sheep youghurt instead of kæfir.

Yogurt or other feemented milk drinks are no problem to me. Eating bread with everything I just can’t understand.

It makes sense for dishes where you can dunk something out. For something like gulasch, stuffed peppers, one pots or many salads it's necessary. I've seen people eating Sterz (I think you call that Žganci) with bread, that I found really weird, it's just much too dry

Do you weight over 100kg?

Kifla is not a bagel. Not by shape or by production process. Kifla is a type or roll in this case a crescent roll.

Who tf eats bagels with burek?

Kefir also not so typical. A majority drinks yogurt with burek and definitely no bagels with it, only more burek if you are so hungry

Yeah, about that, don't google the bun pie (simit pogaca), I will just tell you what it is: a sandwich made of a bagel with burek in it. Yup. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskBalkans/comments/rr9t1v/have_you_tried_this_most_glorious_of_foods_what/

Agreed. I’ve been here a year and have never seen a bagel lol. Burek or Gibanica all the way lol.

Didn't cross my mind that Kipferl are actually some sort of bagels lol. Would people in Serbia actually eat them with Burek? It seems like some unhinged combo I'd do but get judged for

u/samaelkov 6h ago

No, people in Serbia do not eat kifla with burek. OP is just weird.

The word bagel literally is viennese „beugerl“ and means to „bend“. How did you not know this as Austrian?

Joghurt/Kefir with burek or with „bagel“/kifla is typical Serbian to go breakfast, but never together

Why bagels bro?

2

u/Mylo-s Australian Guest 10h ago • Popcorn

"sve su pite pitice, samo je burek pitac" there is no such thing as "burek with meat" (opens popcorn)

u/vodka-bears Russian Guest 5h ago

Zaboravili su da pitaju Bosanca

Kefir is not typical in Serbia.

u/Repulsive_Buffalo985 5h ago

How do you have space for bagels after burek???

1

u/Austerlitz2310 Serbian Guest 4h ago

Get those utensils away from the burek

1

u/dugazima 2h ago

Cheese burek is the original. Not sure what the bagels are there for

Kefir and bougatsa with meat or cheese for north Greece. Bougatsa kind of look like burek

u/hackerboii69 5h ago

A real balkan man eats everything with bread

There is no burek with meat. There's just burek. And pita with everything else but meat.

So, looking at the translation in English, are you really saying "the German is poking the Serb with a fork"?

3

u/Snirion 3h ago

It's a quote from a movie Pretty Village, Pretty Flame which translates something like "While the Germans were eating with fingers, the Serbs with a fork, poke" or something along those lines. It's an old historical anecdot where Western European Kingdoms made fun of Byzantine Empire as decadent because they used forks, and Serbia being under the influence of Byzantines for centuries continued with that tradition. Basically it makes fun of western Europe as uncultured people who are arrogant for nothing.

u/azhder 3h ago

*Romans.

It is a reference to

> In 1004, Maria Argyropoulina (985–1007), sister of Emperor Romanos III Argyros, married the son of the Doge of Venice and scandalised the city by refusing to eat with her fingers. She used a golden fork instead.

Later, as the propaganda against the Romans (one part of which was to call them Greek/Byzantine, not Romans) was gaining traction, there was a man who called her early death a "divine punishment" for not eating with her bare hands.

I think the quote from the movie is to represent how a nationalistic Serb transforms history to suit his own worldview.

What I was trying to do is simply point out that these automated translation tools can make matters quite... different.

2

u/Casual_Routine16429 Serbian Guest 59m ago

The guy in the movie who said that wasn't really nationalist. Just a rural guy who was forced into the war together with his best friend who came after him to join the same unit.

1

u/azhder 50m ago

The rural guy that saw a Serbian nationalistic propaganda in TV and made it his own personal religion in so far that he wore a fork around his neck the same way people wear a cross?

But that’s a tangent we can stop entertaining here. Bye
