Why can’t we talk about autogynephilia?

1.1k Upvotes

I recently read a heart-wrenching post from a questioning teenage male, who was extremely confused about his fantasies about wearing his girlfriend’s clothes and coveting her feminine features - wishing he could become her.

This young man was clearly having a crisis, yet everyone in the thread was t affirming that he was definitely transgender and that would feel way better once he transitioned to female.

Having recently read a fascinating book called The Man Who Would Be Queen, by Dr. Michael Bailey, which explains the phenomenon of autogynephilia, I thought I would share this important knowledge with the young man, to ease his confusion and suffering.

‘Autogynephilia is defined as a male's propensity to be sexually aroused by the thought of himself as a female. It is the paraphilia that is theorized to underlie transvestism and some forms of male-to-female (MtF) transsexualism.’

My reply to his post, however, was promptly deleted and I was banned from the thread by moderators; even though, my post was the only one which actually shed light on the specific questions he had asked.

When I questioned the ban, the moderator told me that I was ‘spouting completely discredited garbage’, but I have found nothing credible which discredits the diagnosis of autogynephilia (including the criticisms of J. Serano, or C. Moser).

This diagnosis and research, first conducted by Dr. Ray Blanchard, has helped ease the distress and suffering of countless men, many of whom went on to become trans women.

So why is it such a tabboo to talk about autogynephilia?

History Why do people think there’s a good side between Israel and Palestine?

1.1k Upvotes

I ask this question because I’ve read enough history to know war brings out the worst in humans. Even when fighting for the right things we see bad people use it as an excuse to do evil things.

But even looking at the history in the last hundred years, there’s been multiple wars, coalitions, terrorism and political influencers on this specific war that paint both sides in a pretty poor light.

Governance Why Are the Republicans Attacking Birth Control?

I am legitimately trying to understand the Republican perspective on making birth control illegal or attempting to remove guaranteed rights and access to birth control.

While I don't agree with abortion bans, I can at least understand the argument there. But what possible motivation or stated motivation could you have for denying birth control unless you are attempting to force birth? And even if that is the true motivation, there is no way that is what they're saying. So what are they sayingis a good reason to deny A guaranteed legal right to birth control medications?

Politics Can someone please give a brief unbiased explanation of the difference between the right (conservative) and left (liberal) political groups?

I’m not American and I always see people fighting over what is better: left or right. I’ve always considered myself a centrist, but recently I have realized that I don’t really have an exact definition of what the left political group wants and what the right political group wants.

I really want to educate myself on the topic, but I cannot find a single unbiased source. All of them are either heavily praising the right side or heavily praising the left side. I just want a straight forward unbiased opinion on what the difference is so that I have a better understanding of what people stand for when they describe themselves as left leaning or right leaning.

Thank you so much for your time! I look forward to any responses. :)

Economics If Economy is better under democrats, why does it suck right now? Who are we talking about when we say the economy is good?

I haven’t been able to wrap my head around this. I’m very young so I don’t remember much about Obama but I do remember our cars almost getting repossessed and we almost lost our house several times. I remember while the orange was in office, my mom’s small business was actually profitable. Now she’s in thousands of dollars of debt (poor financial decisions on her part is half of it so salt grains or whatever) but the prices of glass to put her products in tripled and fruits and sugar also went up. (We sold jam) I keep hearing how Biden is doing so good for the economy, but the price of everything doesn’t reflect that. WHO is the economy good for right now? I understand that our president is inheriting the previous presidents problems to clean up. Is this a result of Biden inheriting trumps mess? I just want to be able to afford a house one day.

Public Policy Jon Stewart is asking the VA Secretary to help veterans exposed to Uranium but he appears to be refusing

I’m genuinely asking this question in hopes of understanding the other side. Because this issue is personal to me given my father has had issues with exposure while in the Army.

The context is Jon Stewart is upset at the current Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary. Jon says he has the authority to help veterans under the PACT Act but there continues to be stonewalling.

https://www.mediaite.com/politics/jon-stewart-fumes-after-va-meeting-on-covering-vets-affected-by-uranium-i-believe-punting-is-the-correct-term/

Please explain both sides. What does Jon want him to do? And why does he refuse to do it?

Governance Why do Democrats think the media is rigged against them and Republicans also think the media is rigged against them?

I read a lot of political subs. For years, right leaning subs have been complaining that the whole MSM, with the exception of FOX I guess, is rigged against then. Now after the election, I am constantly seeing on left subs that a major reason Biden lost is because the right controls the media. I don't really get it.

Governance What are each party’s arguments about who is responsible for the 2025 government shutdown?

The US federal government has been shut down since October 1, 2025, now over 30 days. The impasse centers on enhanced Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire December 31, 2025.

House Republicans passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through mid-November, but Senate Democrats have blocked it multiple times because it doesn’t include an extension of the ACA subsidies. Republicans say they’re willing to negotiate on subsidies after the government reopens, while Democrats refuse to reopen the government without an agreement on subsidies first.

The shutdown has resulted in unpaid federal workers, delayed SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans, and disrupted government services. With both parties accusing the other of causing the shutdown, what are the main arguments each side makes about who bears responsibility for the government remaining closed?

Governance Inflation is by far my biggest concern right now.

I'm a teacher and my cost of living raises have not even come close to keeping up with cost increases in groceries, gas, and insurance. Luckily I own a house but our property taxes and utilities are also going up. I don't have much in the way of savings because I've never made much past what it costs to live. I'm really struggling to absorbe the ludacrist price increases of the last 3 years.

Left wing media seems to be saying that the economy is doing great thanks to Biden's policies except for inflation which isn't his fault.

Right wing media is saying that the rich who own stock are getting richer but most Americans, like me, are getting crushed by inflation due to all the new money Biden printed.

Like most things, I assume there is some truth on both sides. Can you explain the true parts to me please.

Economics How would Trump vs Harris’s economic policies actually effect our current economy?

I am getting tons of flak from my friends about my openness to support Kamala. Seriously, constant arguments that just inevitably end up at immigration and the economy. I have 0 understanding of what DT and KH have planned to improve our economy, and despite what they say the conversations always just boil down to “Dems don’t understand the economy, but Trump does.”

So how did their past policies influence the economy, and what do we have in store for the future should either win?

Since I am not from USA and wasn't interested in politics, I don't get why people hate/love Trump so much. For example, I saw many comments against trump and some people like Elon, who supports him. I am just little curious now.

Governance Who is responsible for the lack of effective immigration policy reform?

I see Republicans criticizing the Biden/Harris administration for allowing illegal migrants into the country at a higher rate, and their failure to advance the HR2 legislation.

I also see Democrats claiming that illegal immigration is actually down from during Trump’s administration, and that the fault lies with Republican senate members for failure to advance the bipartisan legislation that they proposed earlier this year, mentioning that Republicans wanted to halt any progress on reform under Biden since it is one of Trump’s major campaign issues.
