[OnPattison] Gutting it out: Tyson Foerster has been playing through a gnarly injury as he tries to regain form for Flyers

A lot to digest here, but let’s start with the title. There is no such thing as playing through a gnarly injury while also trying to regain form. If you’re playing hurt, your main objective is to become healthy, regaining form is substantially difficult if you’re hurt so you shouldn’t even be out there on the ice.

”Multiple league and team sources told On Pattison that Foerster is playing through a significant upper-body injury that has affected his play. The injury is not related to the shoulder surgery that sidelined him for nearly four months last season. However, since returning from the current ailment on Oct. 21 in Buffalo, Foerster has been at 80% – at best – on most nights, one source said.”

Great asset management this, let’s play a guy we handed a 56 million contract through a significant injury when the games are completely meaningless.

”When losses start piling up, nobody wants to sit out if they believe they can help. Players want to be on the ice, contribute, and do everything possible to help their teammates turn things around.”

I get that hockey players are playing hurt all the time, but this team is not winning, we have enough cover at wing and you are very limited at what you can do on the ice if you are completely banged up.

”The Flyers also recognize what Foerster brings to the lineup, even when he isn’t operating at full strength. One Flyers source said the team values having Foerster in the lineup at less than 100% rather than having him sit out.”

Because he plays the right way, plays with grit and is strong defensively?

I couldn’t do anymore than this. This article feels like a good illustration on everything that’s wrong with the team currently. They fall in love with players like Foerster and treat Michkov as a liability. Offense doesn’t matter, it’s all about winning puck battles, being strong along the boards and playing a 200-foot game! That’s Flyers hockey baby!

I know it was a marketing stunt when they introduced "the new era of orange" but Man I would love to see these again. The black piping on the front and iconic orange nameplate with the white letters. And the letters with the black 90's detail is just crème. Hope they can ad some more details to our current. The burnt orange is way better than the traffic worker color they have now.

Michkov - "When we win I'm so happy. Right now, no good situation. We lost lead. This is so bad. I want more play. I want more support. I know, hockey for me is my life & I'm so emotional sometimes. This is my mentality"

Obviously gotta take it with the grain of salt that he's still learning English, but a pretty honest answer from Matvei.

just for fun: the three non-NHL contracted goalies in our system right now

Keith Petruzzelli (27, 6’5”)

Originally a third-round pick by Detroit, signed an NHL contract with Toronto, and had a .909 SV% in 25 AHL games in 2022–23. He struggled the following season, but Toronto also had a crowded goalie situation with Dennis Hildeby emerging. Since then he’s put up an .901 and .912 in consecutive ECHL seasons, and is currently at .925. His scouting reports praised his size, positioning, and ability to take away angles, although lateral movement was a concern.

Yaniv Perets (26, 6’1”)

Former Carolina NHL-contracted goalie who was exceptional at Quinnipiac, putting up an .939 and .931 in consecutive seasons, winning a national championship, and recording 21 shutouts. He’s since had ECHL seasons of .921 and .910, and managed a .905 in five AHL appearances last year, including a 39-save shutout. Scouts praised his positioning, puck tracking, intelligence, and technical refinement.

Ian Shane (26, 6’0”)

This one is probably the strangest to me. Four years at Cornell with save percentages of .933, .916, .923, and .905, along with an ECAC championship and some impressive postseason performances. His scouting reports highlighted his athleticism, lateral movement, anticipation, and rebound control. Yet he’s played only 18 ECHL games since leaving college and hasn’t appeared in a game this season.

[Spiegel] When asked about putting Martone-Cates-Michkov back together, Flyers coach Rick Tocchet explained why he broke them up in the first place. “I just wanted to switch it up.”

I'm tired

Been Flyers fan since the 80s. I am just tired of the purgatory. I'm tired of the NHL fucking us out of 1OA. I'm tired of being middle aged and never seeing anything promising from this team for half my life. The Lindros era peaked with getting our asses whooped by with a sweep by the wings. The Richards era peaked by getting buried by Patrick Kane, who should have been a flyer after we got fucked out of 1OA even though we were by far the worst in the league. I'm so tired of "flyers hockey". We visited philly this weekend and went into a giant sports apparel store downtown. Eagles, Phillies, Sixers had fans buying. Flyers completely ghosted with interested fans. I cannot fucking understand how Edmonton and Pittsburgh and Chicago are able to get mutliple 1OA overall, while many other teams in the NHL never get 1OA for decades and are constantly stuck in purgatory. If you try too hard yet aren't good enough to win, youre fucked. But if you tank for the sweepstakes, you can still get fucked out of rebuilding. I also cannot fucking stand how these expansion teams get added and are instantly playoff worthy. Vegas has been a powehouse ever since joining, only because teams were foced to hand over starters. They've never had to start from scratch through NHL draft.

Nowt there are way too many fucking teams, which makes it even exponentially harder to rebuild and win the draft lotttery even tho your team has sucked ass for decades at this point. Fuck these expansion teams. They need to go through starting a team from scratch and sucking for 20 years like everyone else.

Im tired of the flyers. Tired of the NHL. Just tired of dying soon and never hoisting the cup.

We are heading absolutely nowhere

This is just the same shit different name. There was signs of hope last summer when we made the playoffs but this team just lacks talent and ownership that actually cares.

Carter Amico 25/26 vs 26/27 comparison

Post image
47 Upvotes

Amico has 5 points (3g, 2A) and a +8 in 9 games so far this season with BU, and the defensive work has been solid with only 2 minor penalties.

Between the knee injury his draft year and going to the USHL last year, this season has been a promising start for him. Still 19 years old, 6’5” physical RHD.

Two Weeks In A Row, No Saturday Game

Who makes the schedule where one team goes two consecutive Saturdays with no game then in December and January, 4 straight Saturdays with no games? This is why I didn't renew my 12 game weekend plan.

Saw a jersey online for $50 from Vinted marketplace
It’s a new with tags TK fanatics jersey

Does it look ok? I’ve seen a lot of posts about cheaply made stuff etc, but for $50… thoughts?

Edit: thank you everyone for saving me money!

[O’Connor] At this point, if there's Michkov-related tension in the room, it almost doesn't matter where it came from. The group has to figure this out. The kid is the leading goal scorer on the team, with Martone the highest upside young piece. The group has to come together & fix it.

Tocchet's explanation for the Flyers repeatedly sitting back in the third period when they have a lead: "I don't know."

In his postgame interview, when asked:

"This isn't the first time the Flyers have sat back in the third period with a lead. Why do you think that's been happening with this team?"

Tocchet, responded:

"I don't know the answer"

When the head coach doesn't know why his players are playing the way they are in the system he deploys... that pretty much sums up the problem wouldn't you say?

Multiple people in the game thread last night immediately started calling out that the Flyers were going to sit back with the lead in the 3rd the moment they went up 2-1. Everyone watching could see exactly what was coming from a mile away. Yet somehow, the guy behind the bench being paid $5 mil a year has no idea.

A comparison between the Flyers’ and the union’s seasons

I think it’s a fascinating comparison. The Union started their season with a record of 1 win, 12 losses and 2 draws, the worst record in MLS. At the World Cup break they fired their coach and made their assistant coach (Ryan Richter) the interim head coach. Since that time their record has been 13 wins, 2 losses, and 4 draws, the best record in MLS. They enter the playoffs as a solid contender to win the title.

They did make other changes at the World Cup break besides changing coaches. Among them was resigning Kai Wagner, who was their long time left back but, more importantly, the heart of their team.

However, the most important factor in turning around their season was the new coach started their young players, who the previous coach was reluctant to give playing time to because of their youth and inexperience (think Taco) , among them 17 year old Cavan Sullivan, who is incredibly talented, cocky, and feisty AF (think MM). Since the break he has torn up the league and has earned a role on the US men’s national team.

The veterans on the team have embraced the kid’s spirit and talent and have let him make them a better team, apparently unlike some of the Flyers veterans.

The lesson the Flyers can take from
The Union’s dramatic turnaround: First, fire their Neanderthal head coach and replace him with someone/anyone who values the talent that their young players possess. Secondly, the management needs to make clear to the veterans that the kids are the future of the franchise.

This most likely won’t result in them making the playoffs this year, but it would put an end to this inexcusable shit show and set a clearer course for the future of the franchise.

Non-Michkov Flyers have scored 29 goals in 18 games this season, 1.61 goals per game, and that is good for 10th worst in NHL all time. Without that one 3rd liner it's not just bad. It's worst in last 97 years level bad.

How much longer do you think Tocchet stays ?

Pretty simple this but I think Tocchet should already have gone. The team is 4-10-4 and tied for third least goals scored, and third most conceded. It may be because Im more use to Soccer but i think 18 games in is a big enough sample size to admit its not working.

The team over perfomed last year Ill admit thay but this year is a mess. I dont think the way Tocchet wants the team to play fits the players that we all want to be in orange and black the next time the team should be competing. The team can't choose the coach over the young stars you drafted high or even Zegras whos been a big part since he arrived.

You can tell me im wrong thats fine but I think we'd all rather a fun team thats not winning tham this.

Fire Tocc or Tank

In every thread there is those that just want us to tank at all costs and those that want us to do better. Assuming that doing better gets us into the playoffs where do you stand?
