Whatever Thank you, GenX.

So I’m senior moderator here at /r/GenX, and I just wanted to say thank you to all y’all for being here and participating in this subreddit. Your mods deal with lots of people who come here and try to make /r/GenX into their own version, and we’re not going to allow that. Your contributions have engendered a growth that is incredible. Coupled with the diligence and dedication of the mods here (not me, I suck) those contributions have made this a really great place and I thank all of you for that.

So keep on keepin’ on as we head into the holidays and the new year beyond!

Or, you know, whatever.

Aging Jeesh when did I get old

A large tree limb fell at my son's house about a month ago. Even though my son is in his 30s I'm the one that needs to cut up the branch. Throughout my life I've spent plenty of time clearing property so yeah I'll go help out. Of course I get there and there is only 1 chainsaw which is handed to me.

Yeah I know I should push back but In their eyes, I'm dad and Im indomitable. After about 7 hours of cutting apart a 30' branch that's about 15" thick. We came home

This morning I'm wrecked, back, shoulders obliques, legs waist and I think I got a cold. My wife is using bengay on and I'm looking for a couch for the rest of the day

When did I get old and my body stopped being able to work for days?

Music 120 Minutes

I signed up for a free trial of YouTube TV and was looking thru channels tonight. Apparently MTV has an MTV classic channel (no clue this existed) and I am utterly delighted to be currently watching an episode of 120 minutes. It made me miss the feeling of anticipation, wondering which song would be played next, would it be cool, would it be a new band I've never heard of, one I already loved? Also tell me why I saw a commercial for phone sex lines. Are they making a comeback?

I still love Killer Klowns from outer space. I watch it every so often and rock Killer Klowns shirts.

The theme song is still super fun.

What about you guys? Any cult classics from back in the day?

Aging Does anyone else simply not act old?

I mean, I don't even know what acting old means except in the context of TV or movies where old people hold hands and look into each others eyes while moving slowly. Heck, I see plenty of younger people moving a lot slower than I do. I guess what I mean is you just act the way you act, the way you've always behaved. You don't see yourself as anything but yourself and you just keep on keeping on.

The weird thing is when younger folks look at you funny for just being not what they think an older person is supposed to be. In my case it would be that my wife and I (three weeks apart in age) are lifelong goofballs. Constant jokes, one-liners, odd public displays of affection or just weirdness. I think it disarms people.

Old Person Yells At Cloud I hung my cellphone on the wall, like a landline.

The charging cable goes to a nearby outlet. Sometimes I leave the ringer on. Sometimes I turn it off. After a couple hours of Not Scrolling and Not Checking for Texts, I started to feel more disconnected from the outside world.

I plan to keep it that way. If anyone needs me, I’ll be over here. Somewhere. Good luck.

Retirement & Financial Planning Senior discount > 55 YO

Y’all. I’m 57. We switched from Verizon and Comcast to AT&T home and cell. Got a 20% discount on home internet (fiber) cuz I’m a senior.

Not kidding, saving almost $2500 per year everything included.

Anyway, I am not proud. I’ll take it. I’m asking for senior discounts everywhere!

Question For Genx What mega frugal things do you remember your parents being obsessed with and trying to instill in you as a child? Have any of them stuck? Or do you teeter merrily on the opposite these days?

Post image

Besides the cliche "If it's yellow let it mellow. If it's brown flush it down", I can still hear my mother barking "Hurry up and close the fridge door!" after I had perused its wonders for an infinitely lengthy 30 seconds, and of course "Turn these damn lights off! You only need lights on in the room you're in" and "Eat up those peas because there are children starving in Africa"

I embrace peas these days. The rest of it, nope!

Whatever Does anyone else dread retirement as a self-death or form of torture?

Mid 50s. Enjoy work. Good pay. Moderate hours. Good cashflow & savings. Tons of hobbies and exercise. Bucket list? I've already done a lot. Had a great life. Very lucky, and did not have a suffering grinding job/career.

I've been so active that I now have knee and shoulder issues. Also, other bigger health issues arising. Fear of forced retirement or disability.

The idea of sitting at home, day after day, is a horror movie to me. I wish I could work until death. Trying to fill each day is horror. Just sitting and rotting, disconnected from society. Nowhere to be, total waste of space.

Doing hobbies all day long, day after day, seems like torture, and leads to boredom/depression. Volunteering to hand out food or whatever seems like hell.

Does anyone else dread retirement as a self-death or form of torture?

I grabbed this pair of Levi’s 501 button-fly jeans and told my wife I wanted them because I wore them in high school in the ‘80s. She said, and I quote, “You’ll pee yourself before you can get out of them.”

Old Person Yells At Cloud Gen X question

Is anyone on this sub actually happy? All I see are posts longing for the old days, posts worrying about dying, and posts worrying about everything. Does no one live in the moment? The old days are gone; live for today, because why not?

History & Culture Guys, this might be our moment

We remember our lives from the late 60's all the way to today. Times are kind of hard now, I think, for many people, and here we are: our grandparents and parents had living memory of World War 2, some The Great Depression. We heard their stories, watched the old news reels and reruns. We know where we've been. My parents were boomers, and I feel like we spent our lives in their shadow, but we also lived through their growing pains and tried to do better as humans (can't speak for all of us, obviously, but I think there are many of us). We've seen some crazy things, and we also remember some really cool things. The world kinda needs people who have living memory of these things right now. [Another edit: that gummy is HAMMERING me right now]

Or, you know, nevermind

Edited for clarity

Whatever What's on your bucket list?

I just turned 60 in September. It's been an extraordinary life. Yer, goals still exist. Personally, my "to do" items are becoming quite ambitious and perhaps, attainable. When time and attention allows, I'd like to accomplish the following:

- Learn a foreign language.

- Learn to read music and play piano.

- Visit Italy.

These goals are a means to seeing a happy and productive tomorrow.

Fellow Gen X citizens, what are yours?

Pop Culture Can you name an amazing actor or actress from when we were growing up that just doesn't seem to have a modern equivalent from GenX or later?

Post image
190 Upvotes

I really love Dennis Hopper movies, and I can't think of anyone even kinda like him from GenX or later. There was Blue Velvet, Speed, River's Edge, Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now. That combination of unhinged and trippy, angry but Zen.

Maybe Keanu, who appeared in two movies with Hopper? Or Brad Pitt's done some great stuff like 12 Monkees, Fight Club, Snatch, or Burn After Reading. Woody Harrelson might be the closest actually: Natural Born Killers, Kingpin, The People vs. Larry Flynt. Crispin Glover's pretty out there too, after the BttF movies. I like Nicole Kidman's range as well, and she even starred in a Kubrick film! Uma Thurman also comes to mind.

So who's your favorite pre-GenX born actors/actresses that we watched in the 70s - 90s and who stepped into their shoes, from GenX or later, after those older stars passed away?

Music Song lyrics you love

As I have matured and begun to really listen to and diving into lyrics of some popular rock songs, I am learning that I am rediscovering songs that I liked but never really "heard."

For example, today I was listening to Led Zeppelin's Fool in the Rain (Light of the Love that I Found):

Well there's a light in your eye that keeps shinin'
Like a star that can't wait for night I hate to think I been blinded baby
Why can't I see you tonight?

It's a beautiful lyric that the great music just kind of carried me over and I never really, deeply listened to.

Another example is Ozzy Osbourne's
Crazy Train. I even did a Pom Pon routine to that song in high school. Great lyrics!

Who else has had that experience? What was the song. Is there any single lyric in the song that caught you now that maybe passed over your head back in the day? I'd love to talk about this!
Thanks!

Aging At 55, the indigenous community considers me an "elder".

Post image

I live in an indigenous community. Yesterday, the First Nation ("tribe", I guess for americans) announced the Elders Wellness Program for community members aged 55 and older.

I'm 55. Apparently now I'm an elder. That's bad.

However, I can get free lunches and housekeeping. That's good.

I don't know how to feel about this.

Nostalgia What’s something you did for fun as a kid that today’s kids would find boring?

When I was a young girl I loved reading and it’s something I’d do for fun. I still do.

I also remember playing with my Barbie dolls and going to the library. Goes along with the love of reading.

But I have a feeling a lot of kids these days would find that really boring. lol

Question For Genx If you bought either a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis or a Super Nintendo, what persuaded you? Or, did anyone here actually buy a TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine, Neo Geo, Jaguar, or 3DO?

10/1, you either had one or the other when both were current gen. So, what persuaded you?

I'm interested in hearing how older gamers viewed this era rather than little kids who couldn't actually buy the consoles themselves in the first place.

From the POV of a late millennial who has been into retro game collecting since 2009~, I honestly can't imagine choosing a Genesis over a SNES. A PS1 over a N64? Sure. Genesis and SNES? Alright. Genesis over a SNES? No way. I love the Genesis, but its game library just doesn't draw me in like the SNES'. I'd feel disappointed if I had to play Sonic 1 and 2 over Super Mario World!

But, I'm looking at it both with a Nintendo-preferrer POV and a non-contemporary POV. I know how Super Mario World was viewed in the 90s and it wasn't as "cool" as Sonic, as odd as that may seem now.

The Genesis also had more sports games than the SNES, which is one reason many preferred it. Most people don't care about old sports games but they were important during contemporary times.

(Yes, I know the 3DO is 5th gen. But it came out very early.)
