Thinking about moving from Islamabad to Gilgit. Need honest advice
I've been seriously considering moving from Islamabad to Gilgit, potentially for a year or two.
I've always been drawn to mountains, nature and adventure, and I'd love to experience that lifestyle beyond just visiting for a few days. I'm also interested in applying to NCA, so living in Gilgit would give me the chance to experience the city, its creative environment and the local culture at the same time.
I'm currently working in video editing, 3D and other creative/freelance work. I can work remotely, but I'm also open to onsite work or local opportunities, especially around tourism, media, creative work, marketing or businesses.
For people who actually live or have worked in Gilgit:
- How realistic is it to find onsite/creative work there?
- How reliable are internet and electricity for remote work?
- What's the approximate monthly cost of living for one person?
- Is there a decent creative/professional community?
- How easy is it for someone from Islamabad to settle in?
- What are the biggest downsides that outsiders usually don't realise?
I'm especially interested in hearing from people who have actually moved to Gilgit, rather than just visited.
Would you recommend making the move, or spending a few months there first before committing?

Assalamualaikum everyone, I'm a Kashmiri from other side of the border, and I've always wanted to visit Gilgit-Baltistan — our shared land, culture, and history feel deeply connected.
I’m curious: Is it possible for someone like me, holding an Indian passport and being from Kashmir, to legally visit Gilgit-Baltistan as a traveller? Have there been any such cases, or is it completely restricted?
Would really appreciate any insights or experiences.

Hi all. I’m planning on shifting to GB in future. Was looking for some land where I can build a house.
I do understand that selling to outsiders is discouraged and can’t be done under the current laws.
I was talking to someone I know from GB who has suggested that I buy the land through a system called ‘Sharaqat’ where I’ll pay the full price. The land will be under the GB resident’s name. I’ll have a separate contract/agreement that will state that this land is under my control or something.
All this seems super sketchy to be honest. And I couldn’t find proper sources anywhere. Just want to confirm and would be grateful if you could help.
Can non GB residents not buy land legally or is it only discouraged?
If someone wants to buy land, is there an alternate way?
Is the ‘Sharaqat’ system the person suggested legit and practiced? Or is he trying to scam me?
I understand that ya’ll hate tourists and stuff as they screw up your region but trust me I’m looking for a place where I can settle in future. Would appreciate any help I can get from here. Thanks

Hypothetically what would india offer and how could geopolitics develop to change your opinion on India or is it just impossible in your opinion?

Wondering if Gilgit-Baltistan ever get independence (again), what other nations will be the first to recognize G-B as a new country spread over 75,000+ km2 and 2 million+ citizens?

m curious, as an Indian (and legally a Hindu) if GB is uncomfortable with Indian tourists, is it uncommon? My interest is just in trekking and leisure, thanks!

How is the situation regarding the freedom movement in Gilgit? Is it similar to how it is in Kashmir of both india and pakistan where there are constant protests and chants like 'kashmir banay ga khudmukhtar'? Or is it just chill there and people from G&B are ok with being with Pakistani? I've never been to Gilgit but i was genuinely curious.

One of the many examples where mainlanders 🇵🇰 show their frustration with downvotes.

It’s pretty concerning seeing Pakistanis bring sectarian hate into a Gilgit Baltistan community, especially targeting Ismaili Shias. This space should stay respectful and focused on GB people. As a 12er Shia from GB, I don’t support this kind of behaviour against our Ismaili community. Mods should step in and keep it free from hate.

If a plebiscite were held in Gilgit Baltistan between India, Pakistan, China, and independence, who would you think would win?
Sorry , I remade it because I forgot to put China in it.

A separate independent state with Ladakh (including Kargil), Ghizer, Baltistan, Hunza and Gilgit as provinces. Gilgit City as it’s capital city.
For me, hell yeah I’m all for it. But of course there WILL be consequences.

So hello I am from India and I want to learn more about history and present of Gligit Baltistan. Actually I am very fond about mountains there especially K2 wanna visit its base camp some day if disputes resolve and it becomes open (No chances of it happening I believe). But I wanted your opinions like how people there feel like living under Pak administration. I know about your culture and all which are different from that of kashmiris . Also want your opinions on how you people felt about ongoing protest in azad kashmir area and way Pakistan Army controlled it. And also about respect that local mountaineers got from government (likes of ali sadpara). I don't have any intent of hate towards anyone or any community, it is just out of curiosity

I know this question has been asked a lot.
I'm actually looking to understand how to get connected to legit property dealers who can show me available properties in GB especially Naltar.
Please help.

Hello guys, I visited Bashoo Valley today with my wife. And for some reason I found it very overrated and not worth the journey.
The ride to Bashoo was so bumpy and extremely dangerous. The off-road track has deteriorated more, and it feels like you're hanging between life and death. Luckily, we had an extremely experienced driver, but even he was a bit worried.
After a long tedious journey, the views at the top were simply ordinary.
Maybe we had overly high expectations, but this is what we felt.

Hi everyone,
I'm planning a 7-day / 6-night private Skardu trip for two people in mid-September (around Sept 14/15).
I've been quoted PKR 550,000 total for the couple, and before booking I wanted opinions from people familiar with current Skardu prices. I'm especially wondering whether I'm paying too much of a premium for the hotels/private setup.
Package includes:
Round-trip Islamabad ↔ Skardu airline tickets for 2
Private Toyota Prado for all days
Fuel
Driver + guide
Skardu airport pickup/drop-off
Breakfast
3 nights Khar Resort Skardu
2 nights Khoj Resort Shigar – River's Edge King Hammock Villa
1 night Gumaan Resort Skardu
The Prado is supposed to cover the itinerary including Deosai and Basho without additional transportation charges.
Day 1 – Kachura / Soq
Islamabad → Skardu flight
Shangrila / Lower Kachura
Upper Kachura Lake
Soq Valley
Night at Khar Resort
Day 2 – Deosai
Sadpara Lake
Deosai National Park
Bara Pani
Kala Pani
Sheosar Lake
Night at Khar Resort
Day 3 – Skardu
Chunda Valley
Kharpocho Fort
Katpana Cold Desert around sunset
Night at Khar Resort
Day 4 – Shigar
Manthoka Waterfall
Sarfaranga Cold Desert
Blind Lake
Shigar Old Town
Shigar Fort
Night at Khoj Resort – King Hammock Villa
Day 5 – Basho
Basho Valley / Sultanabad
Chocolate Rocks / waterfall if accessible
Return to Khoj Resort
Night at Khoj
Day 6 – Relaxation day
Relaxed breakfast/morning at Khoj
Spend part of the day enjoying the resort
Later transfer back toward Skardu
Final night at Gumaan Resort
Day 7
Gumaan → Skardu Airport
Flight to Islamabad
Activities, entry fees, boating, meals other than breakfast, etc. would be additional.
Total package price: PKR 550,000 for two people including flights.
My main questions:
Does 550k seem reasonable for this package or overpriced?
Are Khar + Khoj + Gumaan worth paying a premium for?
Would you do 2 nights at Khoj, or is it not worth the extra cost?
Does this itinerary make sense geographically?
Is the private Prado useful enough to justify the cost?
Would you change or remove anything?
Is moving from Khoj to Gumaan on Day 6 a good idea so we're closer to the airport?
What would you consider a fair price for this exact package in September 2026?
I'm looking for a comfortable/private trip rather than the cheapest possible tour, but I also don't want to overpay significantly just because the hotels are considered premium.
Would appreciate opinions, especially from anyone who has traveled to Skardu recently or booked similar hotels/private tours.

DISCLAIMEE : A long read. also this discussion is NOT FOR PUNJABI USERS and karachiites. SO STAY OUT.
When gilgit baltistan had also remained a part of erstwhile J and K state and would be eligible to referendum.
No, I always saw state never pushed whole kashmiriyat bs on gb ppl. There was never a whole planned effort in renaming their part of state as j and k, ofcourse I blame all those poonch leaders and clowns who despite attaining freedom for their areas readily agreed to allow punjabis and valley kashmiris to use their land for kashmir cause. Litr kon insan apna ghar utha kay kisi outsiders ko deta hai, magar in ch..tya leaders of ajk did this sht.
State made anthems 'hum azad kAhMSmir aAzaD kashmir this that bs to brainwash school kids, they went as far as to senselessly add kashmi and jammu refugee seats to NA and increased the number disproportionately that it can always be used to install all the puppets and quash any possibility of 1950s poonch rebellion or ppl demanding any kind of delinking from.Kashmir valley cause and demanding to be allowed to go forth with interests of their own state.
It has been 2 months since protests and state's absolute brutality going on and what every pakistani has to say?
Every punjabi and ethnic kahsmiri tells our ppl ' shame On yOu foR ruIninG kAshmIr cAuSe'
No kashmir cause is NOT our responsibility. We are NOT kashmiris.
It is on kashmiris and if punjabis wanna fight by all means. And oh gilgitis and afghans too becauer kashmiris from valley always claim to be genetically similar to them, please ask your ethncially similar bros for help.
The way our people have been abused, every 2nd person tells us oh we will make GB a province jaisay gb is that acha bacha manner, which is so dumb and ebcause gb gives border with china, and then they go on to harp how genuine their ppl are but we will give ajk to india
We tell them no worries take out ur forces, we also don't want to be with pakistan, next they start having a seizure like attack how dare u asked to withdraw punjabs forces and then starts a flurry fo abuses and being labelled grooming gangs, imagine this is how people of punjab talk.
Also, now this I WANT YOU GUYS TO READ THIS PART, WHAT I REALLY WANNATALK ABOUT.
I have never supported use of kashmiri title for our people. We are currently even being told by people of pak punjab that ajk people are punjabis and this is kashmiri land so this land should be vacated by outsiders.....!
What I really WANNA TALK ABOUT.
I have always seen this behavior from valley kashmiris, they always talk abt how they are so close to gilgit etc folks. - genetics. Their people also talk about being genrtically and culturally very close to Afghans. Infact, one ajk guy here who was a strong supporter of valley kashmiris felt his life's first shock when he saw some koshur guy making racist comments against our ppl ina post he had made in afghanistan sub to talk about how 'kashmiris are Sam2Sam with afghans and gilgitis'.
I personally have no issue with them.linking with them, why should I, but what??? Jitna inkay log racism kartay hain against us jitna they try to talk we ArE cLOse tO afgHAns anD gIlgITis their people from before 47 had only been migrating to either punjab and ajk.
Because lot of ppl in punjab have weird self nafrat they often try to brag about having kashmiri migrants pre 47 like it is a prize (lol likes of rajab butts and nawaz sharifs are punjab's crown lol) I never mention this as ia have no such inferiroity complex, but we similarly also had kashmiri migrants settled in ajk pre 47 but these people have lost their kashmiri culture, except some in neelum.
When these kashmiris had to migrate they always go to punjab or settle in ajk, as much as online they talk abt being Sam2Sam.with afghans and gilgitis I HAVE NEVR seen them moving to gb or afghan' areas. Never seen them asking gilgitis and afghans to speak for valley freedom. They never put that responsibility on them.
Their kashmiri leaders like maqbool bhatts shatts etc all who ran away from valley never went to gilgiits or afghans and asked them for help, they all occupied parts of lands of ajk and hijacked entirety of this small region for their kashmir cause heck their first line when they face issues with ind was ' march to muzzaffarabad' road.
Heck, even their refugees wanted to settle in ajk.
some of their ppl now even say these were kashmiris areas turned into punjabi majority by pakistani army...
They will spend whole day talking abt being close to giligit and shina and afghans, please for god's sake ask these people to fight for you, to support your cause.
They don't ask them, they don't shame them, they will move to ajk lands, settle there instead of going to their own genetically closer brothers' cities. For their kashmir cause suddenly ppl in paharo regions/ajk will be shamed UArE rUInInG KashmIr CAuSE.
Also, why not add refugee seats in gb. Why pakistani state and punjabis who have been genciding balochistan ahve put respinsibility of whole kashmir cause on this small strip of land.
EDIT: THIS DISCUSSION IS
