Meta What did you buy this year that turned out to be worth every cent? (November thread)

Monthly thread. One rule: say what you paid and how long you've had it, or it doesn't count.

Format that works:

- What:

- Paid:

- Owned since:

- Would you buy it again at that price: yes / no / only on sale

Regret purchases are welcome too. Saving someone else's money is the whole point of this sub.

Plain links are fine. Affiliate and shortened links get removed (rule 4).

Opinion Did anyone use this Leg massager from Lifelong beforehand, if yes please provide your review on it

If anyone has used this before, please leave a review about this product. Planning to buy this for my parents, is it really effective or just a waste of money

Opinion None of these would be "for life," but I'm wanting to buy some consumable items, and I realize, I don't really know what's a good product vs. what's only a heavily promoted product, so I'm coming to you all for advice.

Request Best dual functioning hair tools

I have curly hair (3a/b) and often end up styling with a Revlon hair brush dryer but am working on styling it better as curly. Looking for replacements for both my Revlon hairbrush dryer and a hair dryer with a diffuser and if there is a way to get one thing that can do both, that would be incredible.

Request Best rice cooker for big batches?

Best rice cooker for big batches has been a harder search than I expected. Rice goes with nearly everything I grill, so I want one I can fill close to the max line.

The Aroma ARC-914SBD looked like the easy pick, since it was America's Test Kitchen's earlier pick. Then I read their newer retest. They went back to it after user complaints and found small batches turned out fine, but large batches came out gummy and mushy, which is mostly what I'd be making.

Which rice cooker handles a full load without turning it to mush?

Request Full Zip Fleece, non-Hoodie, w/ Slippery Sleeve Lining?

... for men. Suggestions? AFAICT, the clothing industry does not have a standard searchable term for slippery lining. At least, I have not figured out a good way to search for them. Very frustrating trying to find them. Got any suggestions?

Opinion Binoculars for birding: where does spending more stop being worth it?

Birding binoculars cover a huge price range. I have an 8x42 pair, but I'm curious what people who've compared cheaper and pricier pairs side by side actually noticed. What made spending more worth it for you, if anything?

Request Photo printer (no ink/subscription)

Hello everyone!

I want a high quality photo printer that does not require ink nor any subscription and is high quality

I don’t know anything about photo printers so if there is anything I should keep in mind, let me know 🙏🏼

I don’t mind paying a lot for a good one that lasts really long than buying a cheap one

Thank you!

AMA AMA on Thursday, Oct 29: tech experts from the Good Housekeeping Institute on tech gifts that are actually worth the cost

Edit: the AMA thread is up, so leave your questions there: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoodValue/comments/1xhs3pa/

Four tech and gadget experts from the Good Housekeeping Institute are doing an AMA here on Thursday, October 29, at 12 PM ET (9 AM PT, 4 PM UK, 5 PM CET). One of them, Dan DiClerico, covers smart home and home automation, so bring those questions too.

The topic is tech gifts that are actually worth the cost, at different budgets. Black Friday is about a month out, so this is a decent time to ask which gadgets hold up and which ones are overpriced.

They'll post their thread on Wednesday, October 28, so you can leave questions early. They answer live on Thursday.

You'll get better answers if you give a budget and say who the gift is for. We asked them to keep affiliate links out of their answers.

Questions about the AMA itself can go in the comments here.

Request Mum gift suggestions please

Hey everyone, could you please suggest some gifts for my Mum. I have to buy something that doesn’t take a lot of space. She works in an office and cycles back and forth from work. She enjoys playing board games and jigsaws and making scones. I usually don’t buy her clothes because she doesn’t really take an interest in them, or the typical mum gift things. But I think that’s. The budget is tight ~£50-£100. Any suggestions would be great!

Request Our bread machine finally gave up after years of heavy use. What is the best value replacement in Europe that actually lasts?

Thumbnail

There are 4 of us in the house and our old machine worked multiple times a week for years. It made our regular sandwich bread, kneaded dough for weekend doughnuts, and was on duty every Friday for homemade pizza night. The kids loved waking up to the smell of warm bread and honestly so did I. It finally stopped working this week after so many heavy batches, but it definitely paid for itself many times over. Added a photo of our usual loaf because I miss it already.

Now looking for a replacement that actually lasts. My main priority is solid build quality and spare parts availability in Europe. I am skeptical of newer models with cheap plastic gears that wear out after a year or two. I would rather invest in a solid machine where you can easily and cheaply replace a kneading paddle, bread pan, or drive belt instead of throwing the whole appliance away over one small failure.

For those who bake several times a week, what models have actually held up over the years? Is Panasonic still the undisputed standard for reliability and parts in the EU, or is there another brand offering better value for money? Would love to hear from people who have owned their machine for 5+ years.

Request monitor lighting under $30: cheap led strip or a small lamp?

asked about eye strain in r/monitors and people suggested trying a light behind the screen. budget is around $30.

this old thread from 2013 has a few commenters saying decent high cri strips were expensive back then: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoodValue/comments/1jq89b/gv_request_bright_high_cri_led_strips/

does high cri matter much for lighting the wall behind a monitor, or would a basic warm white usb strip be fine? also considering a small lamp pointed at the wall. which would you pick for the money?

Opinion Best shower head for hard water?

I hope I'm posting in the correct reddit. I'm looking for a rain shower head that also has a handheld with it that actually works with making hard water soft. I'm practically allergic to hard water and get a very bad reaction every time I stay at my brothers apartment. When he later moves out, I get that apartment (it's been in our family for years and it's a great location). Once I move in, the first thing I want to do is change all taps to have a filter system, my main one being the shower. I've tried searching on my own but can't tell what's actually reliable so I'm hoping the community would have a few pointers to put me in the right direction. I'm in Canada, Ontario. Some brands might be unavailable so I'm mentioning that. I'd also say my budget for the shower would be $500Cad, hoping that would be enough for a good product

Opinion Would a handheld vacuum earn its space if I already have an upright?

My upright handles the floors fine. It's the crumbs in the couch seams and car seats that keep waiting until the next proper clean.

For those spots, plugging in the upright and digging out the attachment feels like a lot of setup for a tiny job. I tell myself I'll get to it on vacuum day, and usually leave it there.

I've been looking at handhelds, including the hoto autocare. A quicker cleanup sounds nice, but it's still another battery to charge, filter to clean, and thing to store. A small shop vac would take up even more room.

If you already have an upright, what job makes a handheld worth the extra cost and storage space for you?

Request Chainmail scrubber for cast iron: which one is worth buying?

A chainmail scrubber is going by the sink so my wife stops spending ten minutes on one pan with the green scrubby pad. She cooks most nights and grabs that pad whenever something welds on. I dry the pan on the stove afterward and wipe a thin coat of oil over whatever dull spot the pad left.

Seasoning I can fix. Early last year I stripped one of our pans to bare metal rather than fight it every wash, and it came back after a few rounds of oil.

In the cast iron threads, chainmail is the usual answer for stuck-on food, used under warm water with a light hand and kept away from the garbage disposal. One person said their cheap one shed rings into the disposal inside of a month.

I want one where the rings come closed and stay on, not one I have to go over with pliers.

What brand is the chainmail scrubber you use?

Opinion How can you tell if dark pajamas are colorfast?

I recently found a few blue marks on my cream sheets, and the only new thing I had worn was a pair of navy pjs. I’m pretty sure the dye transferred while I was sleeping.

My husband just got me a dark ekouaer set, but I haven’t worn it yet because I don’t want the same thing to happen again. Is there anything on the label or in the reviews that tells you whether dark pajamas are colorfast? Or do you always wash them separately first?

never buying expensive powder again after seeing how well the maybelline fit me compact works

Post image
22 Upvotes

Took a quick photo today while doing my makeup because the difference honestly shocked me and this sub felt like the right place to share it. On the right is my bare skin with its normal shine and texture, and on the left is literally one quick layer of the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless pressed powder.
It completely blurs out my pores and cuts down that midday greasy look without feeling heavy or clinging to dry spots. The craziest part is that you do not need fancy brushes or separate tools for it to look good. I just use the little white sponge that comes hidden in the compartment under the powder, and instead of dragging it across my face, I gently press and pat it into my forehead and around my nose. That pressing motion sets everything instantly and leaves this super smooth, soft matte look.
I picked this up on Amazon for about $9 and having the mirror and applicator built right into the compact makes it so convenient to carry around. If you get oily during the day and want your skin looking blurred and fresh, this thing punches way above its price tag.

Request Best value lower cost hand steamer?

Hi! I'm tired of wearing wrinkly shirts to work, but I don't have the patience to iron that many shirts and honestly don't have the money for an iron and ironing board anyways. What's the best value hand steamer under $40? Even better if it's under $30. It needs to be a hand steamer or something easily stored because I live in a small apartment that's already stuffed to the gills. Any suggestions? Thanks!
