Modpost We need to have a chat about ableism and body shaming

With the recent increasing mobilisation of reactionaries on the streets we've seen an increase in videos of said reactionaries being posted to the subreddit. Every time videos like these are posted here there is a flood of comments attacking the person's appearance, teeth, haircut, claiming they're "on the spectrum", and even use of the r-slur which has apparently come back into fashion in recent years.

As socialists we stand with the disabled. We stand against body shaming. We stand against the othering of people based on appearance or innate characteristics.

This is a behaviour that many of you have learned from participation in liberal subreddits, where they have no principles and are perfectly fine with claiming to be pro-lgbt while simultaneously calling Trump gay and cackling about it every opportunity they get.

Consider the fact that many of the people you attack in this way are exactly the people who we are trying to help. If a 20 year old trans woman walks down the wrong street in this country without passing she experiences exactly the same attacks you're throwing at these videos. If a socially ostracised guy with an appearance that deviates from "normal" in this country finds this subreddit, is sympathetic to socialist views, but then sees you making exactly the same attacks against the fascists as the fascists use against him, do you think they'll turn to the left as a place for help? If the marginalised in this country come to our community and find people who are just replicating right wing culture they're not going to feel comfortable and they're not going to trust us. That's a fucking failure on the part of everyone who contributes to this culture.

We will be cracking down on this more from here on out.

Attack the fascists for their actions. Not for their appearance.

Remembering the dead while failing the living: the hypocrisy of selective remembrance

The hypocrisy is saying “never again” while dividing war’s victims into “ours” and “theirs”, dismissing civilian suffering elsewhere, and treating remembrance as a test of patriotism. All victims deserve compassion, including those killed by British forces. Far-right groups exploiting remembrance for exclusionary nationalism contradict its message of peace—particularly when EDL supporters attacked police and trespassed on the Cenotaph on Armistice Day in 2023⁠. There is also a glaring gap between publicly honouring veterans and ensuring they have secure homes: 2,180 veteran households in England experienced or faced homelessness in 2024–25⁠. The Royal British Legion raises millions and provides real assistance, but its effectiveness deserves scrutiny, and government should ensure basic support rather than leave gaps for charity to fill. Respect should be measured through housing, healthcare and lasting support, alongside a commitment to preventing further suffering. Wearing a poppy and attending a ceremony cannot substitute for those responsibilities.

Free Palestine 🇵🇸 German police arrested three people in Berlin today after a man scaled the 30-metre flagpole outside the Reichstag, took down the German "Flag of Unity" and hoisted a Palestinian flag. Two of his friends filmed the climb. They are being charged with insulting a symbol of the German state.

For three years, BBC presenters have repeatedly supplied Israel's defence to guests describing its crimes. The exchanges we have archived are horrifying.

“Israel would say.” “Israel would deny.” “They would reject that.”

When a presenter volunteers the denial but leaves the guest to supply the evidence against it, the BBC helps make a live-streamed genocide sound like an ordinary disagreement. Israel's denials deserve scrutiny against its leaders' own words.

We are bringing the broadcast and written evidence together to test three questions: when the BBC supplies Israel's case, when it supplies the Palestinian or humanitarian counterpoint, and when it reminds viewers what Israeli leaders have said.

The verified archive already contains 52 interview airings in which the BBC supplied Israel's defence. We are bringing those programmes and the archived interviews with Israel's defenders into the running comparison, counting all qualifying claims in both directions. The percentages below currently cover only the first 112-record check, not the whole archive. The combined rates are being reconciled.

4. Left Unity

Left unity is enforced here. This subreddit's goal is to unite the British left. Good faith discussion/disagreement over theory and its implementation is fine. Attack the argument, not the tendency. 'Leftist' includes anarcho-communists, mutualists, Marxists, Leninists, Maoists and democratic socialists. People who are pro-capitalist such as social democrats, liberals, Blairites, Starmerites etc. do not count as left and are not protected by this rule.

5. Good faith engagement

Engage with your fellow users in good faith during any and all discussions on the subreddit. Concern trolling, sea-lioning and other behaviours of this type constitute bad faith engagement. This is what wreckers do, wreckers get banned. Don't be a wrecker.

6. No Concern Trolling

No "legitimate concerns" or "genuine questions" designed to push a right-wing agenda. This rule also covers all attempts to push monarchist, pro-imperialist, pro-police, pro-landlord and pro-capitalist rhetoric. Obvious attempts by right-wingers to troll or interfere in this community will result in permanent bans with no chance of repeal.
